Mumbai: This World Health Day, let us all take a moment to check in with our bodies and assess our mental well-being. To honour this significant occasion, tune into Dimple Jangda’s audiobook, Heal Your Gut, Mind & Emotions on Audible, where she unravels the intricate connections between diet, emotions, and physical health, offering her valuable insights and tips. In this audiobook, Dimple guides listeners on their well-being journey as she explores the impact of mindful eating, positive emotions, and the release of negative memories on our overall health. Here are five actionable tips that will help you keep your health in check on Audible!

Combat Sinusitis Woes by Trying These Home Remedies

Dimple Jangda, in her audiobook, discusses how sinusitis impacts overall well-being and functioning. She shares a few practical methods that one must consider implementing to treat it comfortably within the presence of one’s home. She shares the following remedies for a natural recovery –

Try steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil for its anti-inflammatory properties. It eases breathing and also reduces cold sores, blood pressure, blood sugar and fever symptoms.

You can take 3-4 teaspoons of ajwain, and carom seeds, dry roast them on a pan and place them inside a small handkerchief. Inhale it slowly through both nostrils. This helps release the pressure and inflation in the sinus areas.

You can also massage your temple to reduce the pressure on your sinuses.

Another remedy is to boil ginger with some mint leaves in a glass of water and sip it when it is warm. For sneezing woes, take black peppercorns, and chew on them slowly. This helps kill the bacteria in the mouth and bronchi region.

Incorporate jal neti yoga into your routine by flushing the sinus passages with warm water and salt through one nostril and letting it flow out through the other nostril. After this, always remember to gargle with warm water, turmeric and salt to prevent parasites from irritating the throat.

Bid adieu to unhealthy foods for improved gut health

Dimple emphasises the vital role of gut health in our overall well-being, underscoring the impact of dietary choices on maintaining a healthy gut. She provides insights on food choices one must make or avoid for healthy gut health.

    •    When we eat a simple home-cooked meal that is made with fresh ingredients and lovingly prepared by our grandparents, parents, partners or even ourselves, we naturally feel satiated and happy due to serotonin released in the gut. On the other hand, when we eat reheated, packaged foods that have preservatives, the feeling isn’t the same. The gut often responds to the quality of ingredients and cooking methods.
    •    Refined sugar is dangerous as it has the same impact on your brain as that of hard drugs and acts as fuel for bad bacteria.
    •    Refined oils, refined salt, packaged foods, deep-fried foods and carbonated drinks, all of these are so finely processed that they cause holes in the gut and leak into the bloodstream, causing inflammation and chronic health issues.
    •    Refined flour used in pizza, burgers, breads, and pasta is the most inedible food. It turns into a sticky glue-like substance and gets stuck to the gut lining for days and weeks together. Other food particles begin to stick to this glue-like substance which becomes a breeding ground for bad bacteria to multiply uncontrollably. When bad bacteria multiply your mental health also gets impacted.

Aid your mental well-being by avoiding tamasic foods

To keep our emotions in check, Dimple sheds light on the importance of mental well-being by discussing tamasic and sattvik foods. Tamasic foods are those foods which have the potential to harm physical and mental health, while sattvik foods entail nutrient-rich plant-based options and minimally processed foods that promote well-being.

    •    Tamas is a state of ignorance, inertia and laziness. It is responsible for negative emotions like anger, attachment, depression, dependency, self-doubt, guilt, boredom, irritation, addiction, apathy, confusion, grief and ignorance. Foods that contribute to tamas include meat, fish, eggs, poultry, stale food, packaged food with a lot of chemical additives, reheated food, alcohol, cigarettes, and addictive drugs.
    •    A sattvik diet includes foods that are rich in nutrients such as fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, whole wheat bread, pulses, grains, sprouts, nuts, seeds, herbs, honey and cruelty-free dairy products. These foods increase your state of awareness and consciousness, inspire positivity and also help unleash your inner potential.
    •    Sometimes, even sattvik foods can turn tamasic when they are old, reheated or deep-fried. These foods do nothing to uplift your energy and take you down to a state of inertia, heaviness, gluttony, lethargy, or aggression. One must avoid late-night meals as they are tamasic in nature.

Enhance digestive health for overall well-being

Achieving a healthy lifestyle through proper dietary habits may appear daunting, but in the audiobook, Dimple breaks this down in a simple manner. From eating raw fruits to drinking soups, she provides actionable tips essential for enhancing digestive and gut health, guiding us towards holistic well-being. She says,

    •    Eat only when you’re hungry otherwise, the food sits in the gut for hours leading to indigestion.
    •    Eat until you’re 80 per cent full, your stomach is the size of your fist, so eat until you’re 80 per cent full, and then there will be room for the digestive juices and stomach acids to work.
    •    You must chew your food until it turns into liquid. Chewing creates saliva which aids in the digestion process, do not make a smoothie of all your foods as that eliminates the chewing process and stresses the stomach.
    •    Instead of fruit juices, have raw fruits and instead of smoothies, have warm well-cooked soups with spices that stimulate the metabolic fire and aid the digestion process.
    •    Eat your liquids which means sitting down while drinking water.
    •    Remember, the gut is communicating with the brain, so if you are distracted when you’re eating with a mobile phone or television, the brain struggles to focus on digestion which can lead to bloating, overeating, acidity and indigestion.

Make room for positivity by letting go of negative emotions to avoid diseases

Did you know that your uterus stores memories? Dimple encourages everyone to maintain a positive outlook in life and release any negative emotions as they can impact one’s physical well-being. She advises the following to get rid of these emotions –

    •    When we hold negative emotions and unresolved childhood trauma, grudges, worry and pain, it gets stored in different parts of the body like the hips and uterus and translates into physical symptoms of diseases.
    •    Negative emotions affect hormonal health and the immune system changes the brain chemicals, the body’s ability to fight diseases and how it impacts a person’s lifespan.
    •    Let go of all the negative memories and emotions that no longer serve you, and forgive all those who have hurt you, including lovers, who do not live up to your expectations and family and society who fail to protect you.
    •    Forgive them and let go because when you forgive, you are releasing negative memories and energy from your body. You start healing yourself and you are healing the generations that come after you as well as the many generations that came before you.

Audible launches new sleep collection ahead of World Sleep Day

Mumbai: Audible, a leading creator and provider of premium audio storytelling, announced the launch of a new collection of podcast series in time for World Sleep Day. An annual event dedicated to emphasising the significance of sleep for overall health and well-being, World Sleep Day aims to address critical issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects and more.

.  An enchanting bedtime story read by Pallavi Sharda: Australian actor and dancer of Indian origin, Pallavi Sharda narrates the tale of Princess Aubergine, a South Asian Sleeping Beauty fairytale, taking listeners on a magical journey towards slumber.

.   Dreamy poetry read by Natalie Imbruglia: Inspired by the rugged Australian landscape, Natalie Imbruglia, an Australian singer-songwriter and actress, lends her voice to the series through a selection of verses from celebrated poet Dorothea Mackellar, creating a rich and immersive experience that leads listeners on a path to sleep.

“Good quality sleep is the most important gift we can give ourselves. Like a lot of artists, my most creative time can be late at night when everyone else is sleeping, so I can find it hard to get back into the routine of going to bed at a reasonable hour,” said Audible Sleep Sound narrator, Natalie Imbruglia. “Recording Dorothea Mackellar’s poetry was truly a magical experience. I was moved to tears while recording ‘My Country’, which made me fall in love with my homeland all over again.”

“I’ve changed, grown and evolved in many ways over the past few years, especially with the approach I take with my health and wellbeing as I set my sights on the Olympics,” said Audible Sleep Sound narrator, Cody Simpson. “As a training athlete, it’s so important to get plenty of quality sleep in order to recover effectively. I’ve enjoyed recording my guided sleep meditations with Audible and hope it will help others relax and unwind when they hit the pillow.”

Commenting on this launch, Audible, APAC VP and head of regional content Karen Appathurai Wiggins said, “In today’s fast-paced world, prioritising sleep is paramount for maintaining our overall well-being. Our 2023 wrap data also highlights that well-being and self-development top the charts when it comes to the most listened-to genres among Indians. This is why we are pleased to introduce our new sleep collection, further expanding our catalog to offer our members new ways to attain a good night’s rest. We wish them all sweet dreams!”

Audible’s Sleep Sound collection is available only on Audible.

The ‘Did Not Quit’ medal is worth more than gold

Sugar Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh shared a valuable lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs—aim for the “did not quit” medal. In her insights, Vineeta stresses the significance of perseverance, highlighting that reaching the finish line is more crucial than finishing first. She encourages entrepreneurs to confront self-doubt, emphasising that worst-case scenarios are often less dire than imagined. Speaking about her journey, Vineeta reminisced, “We (Vineeta and her husband) plotted these worst-case scenarios. Although we know that often it’s not as bad as we are imagining and fearing. For me, the worst case would’ve been losing the last 30 lakh rupees I’d set aside in the bank and start again from square one.” Adding on to the same, she said, “I think self-doubt and a lack of self-confidence is probably the worst kind of rock bottom because there’s nothing that anybody can say that can turn it around for you.”

Frugality fuels value: Make ROI your mantra

boAt CMO and co-founder Aman Gupta shared the mantra of being “fast, fearless, and frugal.” Reflecting on the importance of Return on Investment (ROI), Aman emphasises the necessity of frugality not as a choice but as a fundamental approach to business. Aman’s advice captures the essence of their business model, “Frugality is at the core of our company’s business model. If there is frugality in everything that you do, you’ll be able to create value for stakeholders.” Having worked at legacy companies, before advancing to the forefront of India’s start-up revolution, Aman has many learnings as takeaways. “Start-ups have to learn from legacy companies how to make money, run big companies, and think in a structured manner. Legacy companies need to learn from start-ups how to be nimble,” Aman said. Embracing failures made all the difference, he explained. “I don’t think you need 2-3 successes, you need one. I’ve had five failures but one success has made me who I am. I am a common man, a middle-class guy and I feel that an entrepreneur should be grounded first and foremost. I relate to people who hustle. Nowadays entrepreneurs want the spotlight in the media, and there’s a God-syndrome that kicks in. That’s very bad for the company and the entire ecosystem. Be ready for ups, be ready for downs, but be yourselves.”

Be organised and embrace optimism to balance work and life!

Emcure Pharmaceuticals executive director Namita Thapar, offers a profound perspective on the vital attributes necessary for success, extending far beyond the areas of entrepreneurship. Beyond the commonplace notions of organisation and optimism, Namita delves into the essence of these qualities, asserting that they are indispensable for anyone navigating the complexities of modern life. She asserts, “Not just entrepreneurs, but every person needs to have these. Being organised and optimistic are the bedrock that allows individuals to seamlessly juggle various responsibilities and maintain equilibrium between work and life. In the relentless chaos of everyday life, these qualities become the anchors that foster a sense of calm and resilience.” Namita’s insights resonate as a timeless guide for individuals seeking not only success in their professional endeavours but also a harmonious and composed existence in the face of life’s myriad challenges.

Read people, not just the cards you’re dealt: A poker lesson in early-stage investing

Shaadi.com founder and CEO Anupam Mittal draws inspiration from his entrepreneurial family background. He attributes his risk-taking attitude to his father, who took on economic responsibilities at a young age, and his adventurous spirit to his mother. Drawing parallels between poker and real-time investing, Anupam highlights the importance of understanding people in early-stage investing: “Just like in poker, in real-time investing, you need to read the room. You have to read the other players. In poker, there’s a big fallacy that you’re not playing cards, you’re playing people and the cards just happen to be there. The same thing applies to early-stage investing, you’re trying to understand people.”

Agility over planning: Fall fast, learn faster

Car Dekho CEO and co-founder Amit Jain shared a concise yet powerful lesson: “Fall fast, learn faster.” His words echo the sentiment that in the fast-paced world of business, being an executionist is more valuable than being a strategist: “You can’t take too much time in learning and over-planning; your agility and nimbleness will suffer. It is better to be an executionist rather than a strategist.”

Initially, Amit and his brother decided to start an IT outsourcing company because they were good at coding. Following this, a big disaster struck and it was largely the fault of the brothers. “GirnarSOFT went bankrupt when the stock market crashed in 2009. The Jain brothers had invested close to Rs. 1.5 crore in stock trading and the whole amount was wiped out in 5 days.” Amit said. “We were vetting at 10x leverage, meaning they had positions worth 15 crore rupees. When the Sensex fell from 18,000 to 6,000 – this is something that nobody could ever have imagined. But as an entrepreneur, if you fall down, you get back up again.” He said early-stage learning was very important for him. “Starting and growing a business can be a challenging and difficult process, there will be setbacks and failures along the way and it can be easy to become discouraged or lose motivation. However, persistence allows a founder to stay focused and keep moving even when faced with obstacles.” The company was back on its feet in less than a year and the brothers swore to never dabble in stock trading ever again. Amit learnt never to use money from corporate accounts for such risky funds. He had to show the same agility when he launched CarDekho.
