Family calls Amy Winehouse documentary misleading

MUMBAI: Just a few weeks before the world premiere of the Amy Winehouse documentary titled Amy, the family of the late singer has spoken out strongly against it.

The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the family wanted to “disassociate themselves” from Amy, directed by British filmmaker AsifKapadia, of the Sennafame, the 2010 documentary about late Formula 1 driver AyrtonSenna.

“They feel that the film is a missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that it is both misleading and contains some basic untruths,” the family’s spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that there were allegations made in the doc against the family and management that were “unfounded and unbalanced.”

The late singer’s family further opines, “The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy’s associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life. By misunderstanding the condition and its treatment, the film suggests, for instance, that not enough was done for Amy, that her family and management pushed her into performing or did not do enough to help her.”

Speaking to The Sun, Winehouse’s father Mitch Winehouse claimed that he “felt sick” when he first saw the film. “Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted. I am painted as being an absent father during her last years. It gives the impression the family weren’t there,” he said.

Mitch Winehouse also claimed that the filmmakers “had a pretty good idea of the film they wanted to make from the off” and on Monday told BBC radio that he would look to “sue for damages” if the film cut screened at Cannes was shown to misrepresent him.

In response to the allegations, the filmmakers claimed they came on board with the “full backing of the Winehouse family” and approached the project with “total objectivity.”

“During the production process, we conducted in the region of 100 interviews with people that knew Amy Winehouse; friends, family, former partners and members of the music industry that worked with her,” they said. “The story that the film tells is a reflection of our findings from these interviews.”

Two Indian films in Un Certain Regard at Cannes

NEW DELHI: Two Indian films have been chosen for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes International Film Festival, while renowned British-Indian filmmaker Asif Kapadia’s Amy will be featured in a Midnight Screening.

No Indian film has made it in the main competition of the festival being held from 13 to 24 May.

The Richa Chadda-starrer Masaan is the debut feature by Neeraj Ghaywan. “I am thrilled to be going again to Cannes with a movie! Over the moon, and excited about this for India and the team of Masaan… It’s a huge deal,” said Chadda, who had earlier been to the festival with the Gangs Of Wasseypur team.

Masaan is an Indo-French collaboration co-produced by Anurag Kashyap under the Phantom Films banner. The film also stars Shweta Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra and Vicky Kaushal in a gritty drama shot in Benaras.

“#Cannes2015 Masaan (Fly Away Solo) by Neeraj Ghaywan #UnCertainRegard,” confirmed the official Twitter handle of Cannes film festival. Ghaywan too took to Twitter to express his delight. “Happiest tweet I will ever put up. Our first film Masaan is selected at Un Certain Regard section of Cannes 2015,” he tweeted.

Gurvinder Singh’s Punjabi film Chauthi Koot (The Fourth Direction) is the other film in the section. Singh, who shot to fame with Anhe Ghore Da Daan, has turned his attention to state-sponsored crimes in Punjab of the 1980s and the resistance movement it spawned.

Asif Kapadia’s Amy is a documentary on the late Rhythm&Blues singer Amy Winehouse who was found dead at her residence of suspected alcohol poisoning at the age of 27 in July 2011. She achieved worldwide fame with her album Back to Black, which won five Grammies.

As was reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, Emmanuelle Bercot will open Cannes with her film La Tete Haute.

There are 17 films in the main competition, fourteen in the Un Certain Regard, four out of competition, two Midnight Screenings, and six Special Screenings.

Amy Winehouse documentary on the cards by ‘Senna’ director

MUMBAI: Asif Kapadia – director of the documentary ‘Senna’, based on the life of Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, is slated to now document the life of the late singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse in an untitled documentary. Focus Features would be introducing the project to buyers at Cannes this year.

Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, five years after rising to international fame with her “Back to Black” album.

‘Senna‘ producer James Gay-Rees will produce through it Playmaker Films, Gay-Rees and Kapadia’s new production entity. The film will be co-produced by Universal Music.

“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can,” Kapadia and Gay-Rees said. “Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle,” they further added.
