    ESS claims to double distribution reach in China with deals around EPL

    MUMBAI: Asian sports broadcaster ESPN Star Sports (ESS) claims to have signed its biggest ever distribution agreement in China, resulting in the English Premier League being broadcast live to over 100 million football fans across the country from this weekend. This is the first time the EPL will be broadcast live nationwide in China, says an official release.

    According to the release, ESS has concluded distribution deals with over 20 regional TV stations as well as national channels CCTV 5 and Hunan Satellite, allowing Chinese viewers to see up to 165 live matches from August through May 2003. With this distribution, ESS claims to have more than doubled its previous distribution in China.

    China’s national sports channel CCTV-5 picked up the Star Sports Saturday night match, Hunan Satellite TV brought live coverage of ESPNs second Sunday match and Star Sports Monday night match beamed to a national audience of over 100 million cable households, claims the release.

    The ESPN service is one of only three foreign channels approved to supply programming to Chinese broadcast partners direct 24 hours a day, STAR Sports is available through all hotels, says the release. The season opener on ESPN saw newly promoted Manchester City visiting Leeds United (shown live at 9:55 pm on 17 August ). On Star Sports, popular club Manchester United played host to West Bromwich Albion on the same day.

    Besides match coverage, ESPN STAR Sports will also air daily EPL coverage in prime time as well as daily news on SportsCenter, Asias top daily sports news service.

    Business channel CNBC India in association with Sun Microsystems and Wipro Infotech today announced Managing India Brainstorm IV (MIB IV).

    To be held on 28 June at The Grand Hyatt Hotel, New Delhi, the high-powered forum will focus on the theme – The New Economic Growth Drivers.

    MIB IV would be aimed at determining where the next economic growth push could come from. It will dwell on issues such as how upcoming growth sectors can be nurtured better, evolving the right growth structure, what the key success factors for Indian industry will be and where the new challenges will originate, an official release states.

    The Brainstorm is a confluence of the best minds from diverse streams of Industry and Business. It is envisaged as the top executive forum for the creation of a balanced and comprehensive view of the state of India’s industry and economy and concomitant issues.

    The forum will feature a keynote address from Azeem Premji. The panelists include Amit Burman (Dabur), Gautam Dalal (KPMG), Omkar Goswami (Economist), Sunil Munjal (Hero Group), RV Shahi (Union Power Secretary) and Promod Bhasin (GE Caps).

    Managing India Brainstorm saw its birth in Mumbai and was followed by sessions in New Delhi & Bangalore. The Brainstorms held in Mumbai (July), Delhi (October) and Bangalore (December) were attended by over 200 corporate decision-makers from across industries, sectors and ideological affinities, the release states.

    SINGAPORE: Intelligent Enterprise Asia conferred the 3rd Annual Intelligent20 Awards to the region’s top 20 enterprises that use infocom-related technologies to drive new levels of operational excellence, customer service and innovation. The panel of judges was chosen from 10 global consulting and research firms such as Accenture, Gartner and IDC.

    The winners and finalists will be honoured at a presentation ceremony on 16 January, 2003, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Singapore. The vice-chairman of the SITF Wireless Chapter, Chong Yoke Sim, will be the chief guest at the event.

    The 3rd Annual Intelligent20 Awards received a total of 52 entries from countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. Entries were assessed through application submissions and weightage given to customer satisfaction; product/service quality assurance; return on technology investment and innovation.
