ARY News asked to pay INR 1.58 cr to Geo TV as compensation

MUMBAI: A legal rift raging between two big media groups in Pakistan — ARY News and Geo TV — settled recently in a British Court. ARY News lost the legal battle and will have to pay approximately INR 1.58 crore compensation to Geo.

Pakistani newspapers reported that ARY News had been asked by the court to pay the amount to Geo TV chairman Mir Shakeelur Rehman. As per the media reports, the case was filed by Rehman in London’s High Court of Justice against ARY News for defaming and threatening him.

The court, after reviewing the legal aspects of the case, gave its verdict and ordered the chairman of ARY News to pay the fine for defaming Rehman. The court, however, rejected the charges of heartening the applicant.

The court mentioned in its decision that, even after giving time to ARY News, it neither withdrew the charges levelled against Geo TV chairman nor sought pardon. The case was heard by Justice Sir David Eddy of the Queen’s Bench of High Court of Justice from 1 November to 7 November. On 2 December, the court released its comprehensive verdict.

Rehman filed the case on the basis of ARY’s programme ‘Khara Sach’, in which anchorperson Mubasher Luqman had levelled serious allegations against him (Rehman) damaging the credibility of Geo media group’s chairman. He said in his petition that a series of 24 episodes of the said programme was telecast in the UK and other countries.

PEMRA made the announcement via a tweet from its twitter handle late last evening.

The channel is distributed in Pakistan via the Ary Digital Network which has its headquarters in Dubai. ARY runs a clutch of channels including ARY News, Zindagi, QTV, Muzik, Digital etc.

ARY is broadcast in several Asian countries through the services of Samacom’s uplinking earth station based in the UAE. The network has Mohammed Iqbal as its chairperson; Salman Iqbal being its president & CEO.

The authority had issued an order last month directing Pakistani channels to reduce Indian content to six per cent, and followed it up with another notice forcing them to reduce it to zero by 21 October. It has stated that those violating its order would face dire consequences, among which could include cancellation or suspension of downlinking (read: landing) and uplinking permissions that it grants.

A clutch of broadcasters under the Pakistan Broadcasters Association has been contemplating taking PEMRA to  court for its hard stance on the Indian and foreign content issue.

PEMRA bans Geo Entertainment and ARY News

MUMBAI: A few days after the licence of Pakistan’s leading news broadcaster Geo News was suspended for a fortnight alleging it had defamed the Army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has done the same for two other channels.

Another Geo channel, Geo Entertainment and news channel ARY News have also been asked to stop broadcasting for 30 and 15 days respectively and cough up a fine of Rs 1 crore for airing unsuitable content.

Geo Entertainment’s licence was suspended as PEMRA accused it of insulting the viewers’ religious sentiments by playing a religious song at the mock wedding of controversial Pakistani actress Veena Malik.

ARY News on the other hand was hauled up for airing shows that were anti-judiciary and disrespectful to the higher courts. The channel’s anchor Mubashir Lucman and his talk show Khara Sach have also been banned. In return the channel has stated in one of its programmes that it will challenge the ban in the court.
