  • Saluting India’s TV women

Women in media. Women in banking.

When you think of it, there are more women holding- or have held – powerful positions in banks today, then there are those holding them in media and entertainment companies.

Arundhati Bhattacharya chairs India’s largest bank – the State Bank of India. Chanda Kochchar occupies the corner office as CEO and managing director of ICICI Bank. Shikha Sharma sits atop in the CEO’s seat at Axis Bank. There are other names too whose names have been perched above the C office including Usha Ananthasubramanian (Punjab National Bank), Naina Lal Kidwai (HSBC), Kaku Nakhate (Bank of America Merrill Lynch) and Shubhalakshmi Panse (Allahabad Bank).  And there are scores of other unnamed women who run other banks, branches and finance companies. They collectively oversee money running into lakhs of crore.

Banks and the finance sector encourage diversity a lot more than India’s entertainment and media firmament, or so it appears.

Go down over the years and one has to really dig deep to name women who have been appointed in positions of power leading the business of media and entertainment companies in India. Some of the names that come to mind are Ravina Raj Kohli who helped Kerry Packer set up Channel 9 in early 2000. Monica Tata who oversaw HBO in India and now heads a business channel. Swati Mohan who is the business head of Fox Networks Group and National Geographic India. BBC south Asia & south east Asia senior vice-presidet & general manager Myleeta Aga Williams. Then there is Supriya Sahu who currently leads India’s pubcaster Doordarshan.

The major broadcast networks across the country are led by men: Uday Shankar, Punit Goenka, Sudhanshu vats, and NP Singh.

And women who have got the topmost position in broadcasting have achieved it by virtue of being promoters. India TV has Rajat Sharma’s wife Ritu who keeps the business in order while her husband handles editorial. Kaveri Kalanithi  is executive director of Sun TV of which her husband Kalanithi is executive chairman. Anurradha Prasad promoted the BAG group and leads the radio and TV network. Ritu Kapur and Vandana Mallick of course held powerful leadership positions at Network18 group before its was sold to Mukesh Ambani

The broadcast and digital sectors have their  share of women who have the responsibility of either heading programming, ad sales, marketing or channel clusters. Examples are Manisha Sharma and Simran Hoon at Colors, Nina Jaipuria at Nick, Kavitha Jaubin at Sun TV, Sharda Sundar and Sunita Uchchil at Zee TV, Gayatri Yadav at Star India, and Swati Shetty at Netflix are some of the names that immediately come to mind.

It is on the TV production front that women have made a stellar mark. Ekta and Shobha Kapoor, Rashmi Sharma who heads a production house that bears her name, Raadhika who promoted Radaan Television down south, Fazilla Allana and Kamna Menezes of SOL Productions, Benaifer Kohli,  Anita Kaul Basu, Comall Wadhwa or Bhairavi Raichuria are some of the ladies who have produced content which has earned them a reputation and their broadcast networks hundreds of crores.

Then of course women have become iconic on television shows – soaps, drama, factual and non-fiction, and news. The number of female characters on TV which are unforgettable far outnumber the men. For every Kapil Sharma or a Daya there are many more Tulsis, Parvatis, Ballika Vadhus, Priya Ram Kapoors or  Naagins.

On the news front,  Barkha Dutt, Shereen Bhan, Sweta Singh, Anjana Om Kashyap, Nidhi Razdan, Ayesha Faridi, Nidhi Kulpati, Nidhi Razda, Sagarika Ghose among scores of others have stood out. There was a time when India’s Doordarshan news ladies were the nation’s connect to developments. Remember the eighties and nineties?

Going forward with the world of digital exploding and television continuing to go from strength to strength, more and more opportunities will crop up. And India’s talented women will embrace them.

(The list of women executives mentioned here is just representative of those working in television and is illustrative. There are many more women working in television whose names could have been mentioned. And the editorial team at indiantelevision.com would like to see more women running television and digital businesses. As is the case with banks where women are business leaders.)

  • Women bankers lead India in Fortune list

Women bankers lead India in Fortune list

MUMBAI: Eight Indian women have made it to the Fortune list of 25 most powerful women ‘shaping the new world order’ in the Asia-Pacific region.

ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar has been ranked second across the region while SBI’s Arundhati Bhattacharya, HPCL’s Nishi Vasudeva, and Axis Bank’s Shikha Sharma have also made it to the top-10 earning fourth, fifth and tenth rankings respectively. The list is topped by Australian banking major Westpac’s chief Gail Kelly.

Releasing the latest rankings, the Fortune magazine said that women around the world are continuing to win the top jobs, so much so that more than a third of the women on this Asia-Pacific list are making their debut in the coveted list, including two from India.

The two Indian new entrants are Bhattacharya and Vasudeva.

Bhattacharya is the first woman to hold the ‘three-year post at the country’s largest bank and oversees a 208-year-old institution with $400 billion in assets and 218,000 employees dispersed among 16,000 branches across India’.

On the other hand, Vasudeva, became the first woman to head an Indian oil company and is ‘and one of only four women to helm a Global Fortune 500 firm in the Asia-Pacific region’.

  • Women make better leaders, industry speaks

Women make better leaders, industry speaks

MUMBAI: Haven’t we all heard/read jokes about women driving; however, General Motors, American multinational holding corporation, sealed everyone’s mouth when it announced it’s first-ever woman CEO – Mary Barra.

The 51 year-old has been with the company for over three decades and will take charge from next year. The current CEO Dan Akerson will hand over the charge on 15 January, the announcement was made on 10 December.

There are many women at high positions and who are running the show. If we take a look at the Fortune 500, there are 22 CEOs as per January 2013. Last year, Yahoo had appointed a pregnant Marisa Mayer as its CEO and this year Twitter added former Pearson CEO Marjorie Scardino to its board of directors.

Closer home, things aren’t every different as well. From Vinita Bali to Chanda Kochchar to Kumud Srinivasan, there is no dearth of women taking charge. In October this year, State Bank of India too got its first woman CEO in Arundhati Bhattacharya.

The news of Barra’s appointment was applauded by many across the world; however, the company shares fell 0.5 per cent to $40.70 in Tuesday morning trading after the announcement.

This does raise one question: does the glass-ceiling effect still exists? The latest Pantene advertisement released in Philippines puts light on the old-age debate. The 60-seconder highlights how women and men are labeled differently. For instance, a man is the ‘boss’, but a woman in the same role is ‘bossy’. A man grooming himself is ‘neat’, while his female counterpart is ‘vain’. And so on.

The brand which usually depends on celebrities took a brave step to bring out the double standards practiced in the society.

Indiantelevision.com spoke to a few men in the industry to get their views if things have changed and which company or sector do they feel needs a woman on top.

According to Everest Brand Solutions president Dhunji Wadia there is no point in segregating by industry. “Women leaders are everywhere – from banking and finance, insurance, FMCG, movie production, television, media, alcoholic beverages, hospitality….the list would be quite long.  It’s on the ability of the individual person.”

Reflecting Wadia’s thoughts, Beyond Dreams Entertainment producer and creative director Yash Patnaik says: “I think all the companies should be run by women. Women are better managers then men. Wherever a man can lead, woman can as well.”

But there are a few who believe that certain sectors need a woman’s touch. Talking about the current issues related to women in the country, Scarecrow co-founder and director Manish Bhatt feels that the shape that public transport is in, it needs a woman to take charge of it. “A lot of crimes against women are happening in public transport; hence, it would be great if a woman took charge as she would be able to understand it better. Similarly, products related to kids (colours, drinks etc) need a woman on top as well because mothers understand a kid better than a man or a father would.”

  • Goafest Ad Conclave theme announced

MUMBAI: The theme of this year‘s Goafest Advertising Conclave is ‘Time to Listen‘ and it will highlight the shortcomings of media and creative agencies, as perceived by major advertisers.

The conclave is being sponsored by Discovery Channel and will see 200 industry leaders drawn from marketing, advertising and media. The Advertising Conclave will be held on 4 April at Zuri White Sands, Goa from 3.30 pm to7.30 pm.

Goafest Advertising Conclave chairman Srinivasan Swamy said, “Our Conclaves always focus on issues of relevance to us. In the past we have talked about how to grow the advertising industry, or on the changing agency structure or how advertising is more than creative and media etc. In the same vein, this year we will get advertisers to tell us how we can be more relevant to their needs. The theme ‘Time to Listen‘ captures this essence.”

Goafest Advertising Conclave will have some of India‘s biggest marketers identify the areas that agencies, both creative and media, need to focus on and make suggestions to get served better.

Hindustan Unilever MD and CEO Nitin Paranjpe will deliver the keynote address at the conclave. The other industry experts that have confirmed their presence at the conclave include Tata Sky MD and CEO Harit Nagpal, SBI Capital Marketers MD Arundhati Bhattacharya, and Bennett Coleman president Arunabh Das Sharma.

SKA Advisors founder and chairman Sunil Alagh will moderate a lively panel discussion with the distinguished speakers.

Goafest 2013chairman Nakul Chopra said, “The original idea of the conclave as distinct from Goafest was a forum where industry leaders could contemplate the future of our industry and come together to cooperate in improving it. True to this spirit this year it is our endeavour to make the conclave a much more potent learning experience for the industry. There is no better way to improve our future than by listening to our own customers. With a stellar cast of speakers and a potent theme this year‘s Conclave promises to be thought provoking at the very least.”

For the record, Goafest 2013 will be in its 8th edition and for the 6th consecutive year AAAI and The Advertising Club will come together to deliver India‘s premier awards that celebrate creativity.
