Bhagwat puts truth on trial as Arshad and Jitendra clash in Zee5 thriller

MUMBAI: When truth plays hide and seek with lies, the chase makes for dangerous cinema. Zee5, India’s largest homegrown video streaming platform, has lifted the curtain on its next original film, Bhagwat, a taut crime thriller inspired by true events. Produced by Jio Studios in association with Baweja Studios and Dog ‘n’ Bone Pictures, the film promises an edge-of-the-seat battle between morality and deception.

At the centre of Bhagwat is Inspector Vishwas Bhagwat, played by Arshad Warsi, whose seemingly routine case of a missing woman mutates into a sinister labyrinth of secrets, suspected trafficking, and unrelenting deceit. In parallel, a fragile romance brews between Meera and Sameer, portrayed by Jitendra Kumar, a professor whose vulnerability offers a stark counterpoint to the dark suspense unfolding in Robertsganj, Uttar Pradesh.

Directed by Akshay Shere, the film marks a fresh pairing of two powerhouse performers. Warsi, best known for his wry comic timing, plunges into gritty intensity, while Jitendra Kumar, beloved for his affable roles in Panchayat and Kota Factory, pivots into uncharted territory. Their face-off anchors a thriller where emotion and tension collide.

“Bhagwat is a powerful reflection of our vision: a gripping thriller that’s as emotionally layered as it is suspenseful,” said Kaveri Das, Business Head – Hindi, Zee5. “Arshad Warsi brings remarkable nuance, while Jitendra Kumar’s compelling avatar is sure to surprise.”

For Jio Studios COO & CFO Priyanka Chaudhary the film underlines a mission to deliver stories rooted in India yet resonant globally. “Bhagwat embodies that mission, a taut, heartland thriller that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Building on the success of Mrs., this marks another exciting collaboration with Zee5,” she noted.

Producer Harman Baweja echoed the sentiment, calling the film “a journey into the shadows of human nature, where love, deception, and justice collide.” For Baweja Studios, Bhagwat is another stride in backing stories that are bold, relevant, and emotionally compelling.

Zee5, which has been steadily building a slate of original dramas that go beyond formula, sees Bhagwat as one of its standout offerings of the year. With its mix of crime, suspense, and romance, the film seeks not only to entertain but to leave viewers reflecting long after the credits roll.

Streaming soon and exclusively on Zee5, Bhagwat promises to keep audiences guessing right until the final reveal.

  • Arshad Warsi says ‘Aish Karo’ via CashKaro this Diwali

Arshad Warsi says ‘Aish Karo’ via CashKaro this Diwali

Mumbai: For this Diwali, cashback & coupons site CashKaro has launched the #CashKaroAishKaro campaign in association with Actor Arshad Warsi, which depicts how the homegrown app helps shoppers save on their online shopping.

Additionally, CashKaro has released four spoof ads featuring scenes from popular Bollywood films such as “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Golmaal,” and “Dabbang” showcasing how consumers stand to gain this festive season by using the app for their shopping.

The app promises shoppers that all they have to do is simply go to CashKaro first and then visit their favourite shopping site and avail cashback on every online shopping via the app over and above sale discounts, which they can then transfer to their bank account.

The film shows the actor walk onto what seems like a normal film set to shoot an ad, but as he reads out the script loud he finds it incredulous and hard to believe, leading him to demand to know “ye kaun log hain, muft mein paise kaun deta hain??”

As he reads the script further he exclaims “Aish Karo” in place of CashKaro, giving a funny twist to the ad.

CashKaro also released four spoof ads featuring scenes from popular Hindi movies by putting a clever spin on these recognisable scenes.

The spoof films aim to depict that the app’s cashback scheme is so easy to get that even these popular Bollywood characters are talking about it. Taking on memorable film scenes for comedic recreations garnered a positive response from the app’s audience, the brand said.

  • Golmaal Again: Entertaining suspense thriller

    Golmaal Again: Entertaining suspense thriller

The most successful franchise in Hindi films, Golmaal, strikes again. And, aptly, the title is Golmaal Again. The main faces of the franchise — Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, ShreyasTalpade and Kunal Khemu are very much there so are the other regulars, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari, Johny Lever, Murli Sharma and Vrajesh Hirjee.

However, what has changed is the film’s regular location, Goa, its sun, sea and sand. Golmaal Again is based in Ooty. That is because, the film needs something like British countryside with an old mansion as the backdrop.

The film deals with the supernatural, ghosts, deception and revenge. For a change, the climax here is not a farce as it usually is with this franchise.

The characters of Ajay, Arshad, Tusshar, Kunal and Shreyash are being tended in an orphanage in Ooty started by a millionaire, played by Uday Tikekar, who forsakes all his businesses to look after orphans. The five are divided into two groups: Ajay and Shreyas on one side while Arshad, Tusshar and Kunal are on the other. Both sides are always at loggerheads. One fine day, Ajay and Shreyas walk out of the orphanage after a scolding from Tikekar; Arshad, Tusshar and Kunal follow suit soon.

Both groups are now grown up and are into the same business: that of grabbing land and property for money on behalf of others. While Ajay does it for Sanjay Mishra, Arshad does it for Prakash Raj.

The five of them learn that the father figure of the orphanage, Tikekar, who cared for them has passed away, and they decide to visit the orphanage to take part in the rituals. But, the reason is more: both the groups are assigned to grab the land belonging to the orphanage along with the piece belonging to a blind ex-army man, played by Sachin Khedekar, Tikekar’s friend.

Tabu, a librarian in Ooty who looks after the affairs of the mansion, assigns rooms to the five to stay till the rituals are over. Tabu has a special gift in that she can see ghosts as well as communicate with them. At the mansion, the five also meet Parineeti Chopra who is introduced to them as the maid of the house.

After the usual gimmicks and the gags that the divided five go through like in other Golmaal instalments, it is time to lend some purpose to Golmaal Again. It turns out that Tikekar did not die by falling off the terrace. And that Parineeti is not really who she was introduced as. Only Tabu knew who she was.

It is time for the five to join forces along with Tabu and Parineeti to sort out things and bring culprits to book. The change of background in Golmaal Again takes a while for the viewer to get adjusted to. As this one moves from Goa to Ooty, and is a suspense thriller instead of being an all fun film. But, once into the film, it does not fail to entertain.

The best part, of course, is the dialogue and one-liners that keep the pace going. Shot on scenic, lush green background, the cinematography is soothing to the eye.

The usual Golmaal gang of Ajay, Arshad, Tushaar, Kunal and Shreyas have nothing new to do beyond what they have done earlier. The casting of Parineeti and Tabu brings a fresh look to the film.

The film has a proper villain in Prakash Raj this time and springs a surprise with Neil Nitin Mukesh joining the action in the latter half. The actors mimicking Nana Patekar followed by his sudden cameo make for pleasant viewing.

Lever, Mishra, Tiwari and Hirjee provide relief from time to time.

Golmaal Again is the right kind entertainer for the festive period. Keeps you happy while you are watching it. The opening day response has been encouraging, and the weekend is expected to help maintain the momentum.

    Producer, director: Rohit Shetty.

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu, ShreyasTalpade, Sanjay Mishra, Johny Liver, Mukesh Tiwari, VrajeshHirjee,Murli Sharma, Prakash Raj, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Nana Patekar (cameo).

  • Irada….Docu-thriller?

MUMBAI: The title Irada comes across as B-grade 1970s and it has little relevance to the theme of the film, which is honourable. The film is about an ecological problem, almost a disaster. The issue dealt with here, though, is not as infamous or as well known as the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Punjab has recently been facing an ecological calamity thanks to overuse of chemicals and pesticides in its farming processes. And this is supposed to have penetrated deep enough into the earth to pollute the land, the food grown here as well the underground water resources.

Naseeruddin Shah’s character is a retired but much decorated army man who is training his daughter, Rumana Molla, to qualify as an army cadet. The famous Punjab canals where he trains his daughter to set swim time records, happens to be full of cancer-causing chemicals and she develops the disease.

The reason is the reverse bore-welling process owned by a tycoon, played by Sharad Kelkar, whose company packs all the destructive chemical back into deep earth. The process affects not only all the land in the area but also its farming and waters deep down as well as those flowing through its canals.

Sharad and the devilish chief minister of the state, played by Divya Dutta, are in cahoots and there is little the local NGOs or the police can do about this equation. The situation is so bad that every family is said to have a cancer patient and a point is reached when the state runs a Cancer Express, on which the afflicted travel for treatment.

Suddenly, the cancer causing poisonous factories of Sharad are blown up one fine day. Sharad is wild and so is his bankrolled CM, Divya.

In comes the character of Arshad Warsi, an investigator from the National Investigation Agency, (NIA). Things go a bit haywire here as though Arshad is a central government agent, but the local CM, Divya, treats him like a stooge as if he was the state employee. In between, people are kidnapped, killed and so on all as a matter of fact.

Naseeruddin, and the cop, Arshad, the single-malt-sharing righteous ones join hands to fight the menace.

Here, as in so many such public interest films, the subject is not known to the masses. This has been a local issue unlike the Bhopal incident. That notwithstanding, the process is not shown as to how our heroes, Naseeruddin and Arshad, reach certain conclusions.

Besides this being a local issue, the makers somehow feel that the plight or the essence of the film would be better explained in the filmusing Punjabi language, which is alienates much of the audience. The thriller is treated like many others where the solutions and conclusions that the lead characters arrive at are given and the audience taken for granted. The viewer is not a part of the investigation process.

The film is tautly executed and easy on the eye. The businessman-politician as partners in crime makes it routine subject. The dialogue writing is meaningful and deep. There is no scope for songs. The editing is effective. The direction and treatment are taut.

With good performances all around, the two who excel are Divya Dutta and, in a brief role, Rumana Molla. Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi contribute with their seasoned act. SharadKelkar is effective in a negative role. Sagarika Ghatge is okay.

The film has nothing really to draw entertainment seeking viewers.
    Producers: Falguni Patel, Prince Soni.
    Director: Aparnaa Singh.
Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Rumana Molla, Divya Dutta, Sharad Kelkar, Sagarika Ghatge.

    Running Shaadi….So routine!

Earlier titled Running Shaadi.com, Running Shaadi is supposed to be another rom com like so many before it. The rich versus poor, the city girl vs gawaar and so on has been the staple for love story writers. An attempt has been made to give it a contemporary look. And, it is not incidental that such films are based in the Hindi belt. This one adheres to the norm. It is based in sada Amritsar, the heart and soul of Punjab.

Basing the film in Punjab was fine but, the makers seem to have got carried away. They even made almost the whole film in Punjabi! And, with no subtitles!

Amit Sadh’s character works in a fabric shop, Singh & Singh, in Amritsar, owned by a Sikh family managed by father and son where, along with a couple of others, Amit is a help. An illiterate from Bihar, he is a hands-on help for the shop as well as the owners’ personal errands like from the shop to domestic affairs. He is the trusted one.

Singh’s daughter, played by Taapsee Pannu, is an outgoing girl, defying norms. Along with the rest of the Singh family, she also counts on Amit whenever she is in trouble besides using him as a proxy. Just short of her 18th birthday, she has had a misadventure with a college friend leading to the need for a gynecologist.

The only person she can trust to help her with the episode is Amit. While she gets over her unwanted pregnancy, Amit is the one who tends to her. Already nursing an infatuation for Amit, she is now in love with him what with all his caring ways.

That is when Amit falls short of his boss, Singh’s, expectations. Insulted by his boss, he walks out on his job. Illiterate he may be but he is never short of ideas. Having seen an eloping couple being thrashed by relatives, he comes up with an idea inspired by, who else but Bill Gates. He suggests he and his cheerful Sikh friend, Arsh Bajwa aka Cyberjeet, launch a portal to help and facilitate runaway couples.

The portal has a lawyer and a magistrate in its loop and soon becomes a big success. And, this is all in the first half of the film. The portal has had 49 successful eloping clients, all married off against various odds, thanks to the portal, running shaadi.

But, the 50th eloping shaadi on the running shaadi portal is going to be the portal’s own host, Amit, something he never contemplated!

The second half is all about Taapsee talking Amit into marrying her and, sadly, this half contains just about every scene and sequence seen in umpteen earlier films. For the viewer, it feels never-ending. This part takes the film down all the way.

Writing wise, the film is just another recycled love story. It is not cute as it was aimed to be. And, what is it with the Punjabi background film telling its story in Punjabi? Direction is routine. Editing is weak. Songs are sober but incidental; they don’t aid the story or process of the film. Cinematography is fair.

Amit Sadh, despite lack of expression, carries his limited range just about enough to suffice for the film. Taapsee Pannu is okay but her Punjabi is such a drawl, you feel like learning lip-reading. Arsh Bajwa as a comedian sidekick of the hero is not comic. Brijendra Kala is, as usual, good. Neena Singh, in a brief role, is energetic and impressive.

Running Shaadi lacks novelty and is a routine fare with scarce entertainment value.

    Producers: Ronnie Lahiri, ShoojitSircar.

    Director: Amit Roy.

Cast: Amit Sadh, Taapsee Pannu, Arsh Bajwa, Brijendra Kala, Neena Singh.

  • ‘Budhia Singh- Born To Run’ – a must watch; The Legend Of Michael Mishra and ‘Fever’ don’t impress

‘Budhia Singh- Born To Run’ – a must watch; The Legend Of Michael Mishra and ‘Fever’ don’t impress

MUMBAI: Budhia Sing- Born To Run is a biopic about a five-year-old lad from Orissa who, at that tender age, hogged the media limelight nationally and created for and against opinions about his promise to someday become a marathon runner of the Olympics standards. At this young age, he showed that kind of talent, stamina and inclination. While the whole of Orissa hailed his strengths making him a hero, the media too basked in the stories of his achievements and relished splashing them. He was the youngest marathon runner.

Manoj Bajpayee runs a sort of Judo school for the homeless and for children from poor background along with the help and support of his wife, Shruti Marathe. Besides training them in self-defense, he also feeds, clothes and houses them under the same roof. That is when he brings along Budhia, played by Mayur Mahendra Patole, to join the rest. Shruti mentions the space constraint but Manoj convinces her saying there are already 22 of them around so one more won’t matter.

Shruti is as enthusiastic about the kids and their wellbeing as Manoj but, while tending to the kids in the house like a mother, she also feels the need for a child of her own.

Budhia is a mischievous child who refuses to take orders from Manoj. As a punishment, Manoj asks him to make rounds of the judo arena until ordered otherwise. Manoj leaves on an errand and forgets all about Budhia till he returns and is informed that the lad has been running since he left without stopping. He has not stopped for water or nourishment nor has he complained.

Manoj realizes that the boy is gifted and has a solid stamina. He sees the potential in the boy to run long distances with little or no demands. The boy lives up to Manoj’s hopes, who sees an Olympic-level marathoner in him and starts training him for 2016 Olympics.

Budhia is full of enthusiasm and small things like an extra share of milk, fruits and a pair of new running shoes in his favourite red besides a promise of a red-colored cycle are enough to propel him to the goals set by Manoj.

Budhia goes on setting new milestones as he starts small and goes on to run a full marathon of 42 kms. The lad is now a media star across India and the toast of Orissa state. But, the controversies follow on the merit of making such a young boy undergo such a strenuous regime and running such long distances. Politicians decide to use the controversy to their advantage.

Manoj now decides to make Budhia run a 70 kms distance between Puri and Bhubaneshwar. At the event, covered by national and international media and backed by the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), Budhia almost makes it, collapsing just a few of kilometers before the destination. This incident gives enough fodder to the politicians. Manoj is put behind bars for a while as Budhia is taken to the state sports hostel.
Politics get the better of a budding star.

Despite being a biopic, Budhia Singh – Born To Run has been made interesting on script level starting with keeping Budhia in the centre while changing other players in the story and also rewriting some stuff. Till the end when the politics enters the story, it is more fun as Budhia blends instantly with the other 22 kids in the house and they also accept him as one of their own. No envy is in play when Budhia is given special attention or rations. Budhia’s character is sketched to be stubborn but determined in the goal set by Manoj while also enjoying running.

Direction is taut and competent. Full marks to writer-director Soumendra Padhi. Cinematography complements the concept very well. Dialogue is true to life yet funny. Editing is skilful.
Performances by Manoj and Shruti are seasoned but the one who steals the limelight is Mayur as Budhia; not for a moment do you think he is not the real Budhia. Tillotama Shome supports well along with rest of the cast.

Budhia Singh-Born To Run is a must watch film. With a National Award in its kitty for Best Children’s Film, it does deserve a tax-free tag to help it cater to the kids.

Producers: Gajraj Rao, Subrat Ray, Subhmitra Sen.

    Director: Soumendra padhi.

Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Mayur Mahendra Patole, Shruti Marathe, Tillotama Shome,

The Legend Of Michael Mishra –‘Bad’ time story!

Love story is one of the popular genres, especially if backed by good music and a thriving chemistry between the lead pair. While such love stories also work with new stars, the preference by filmmakers has generally tended to popular pairs which have jelled well on screen on a regular basis.

There are teenage love stories and then there are mature love stories. In The Legend Of Michael Mishra, Warsi is Michael Mishra; no explanation given for his mixed identity. And you expect him to portray a comic character. But, a love story of Arshad Warsi? Now that is plain suicidal! The casting is only the beginning, what follows in the name of entertainment is utterly and unbelievably confounding.

There is a town in Bihar where Warsi has graduated to becoming a local don from stitching clothes and retailing mutton. Such a background to sudden transformation as a don makes no sense. The whole town seems to be scared of him including the police, and he lords his way around.

Earlier in his teens, Warsi had fallen in love with a young girl and given her a locket with his picture as a parting gift. One fine day the don remembers his childhood love at first sight and he is determined to find her. All he has to remember her by is the way she said ‘Hello’! The girl grows up to be Aditi Rao Hydari who loved to dance since her childhood. Warsi, always in search of her, lands up at a “Bihar’s got talent” kind of show where she is putting on a dance show.

Warsi finds out where she lives and shifts into the same housing complex to be close to her. Soon, the sign language exchange of love messages starts flying between the two, later turning into written messages. As Warsi professes his love for her, a reply comes saying he must change his ways before she contemplates his proposal. Warsi, whom no police dare touch, gives himself up to the police.

As happens in all such films, Warsi is welcomed to the jail by veteran jailbirds who gang up against him and get him into a fight. However, the don in Warsi comes to the fore and he licks all the goons. But, he still has the jailor to contend with and he is one tough cookie. Again, as used to happen in last-century’s films, Warsi saves the jailor from a tough situation and the jailor becomes his sympathizer!

The jailor hears Warsi’s love story and advises him to escapes from the jail which, according to him, was the only way he could find his love. Warsi duly obliges. So much for paying for his crimes and taking to the honest way of life!

When Warsi comes back to Hydari, it turns out that all that messaging was not meant for him; it was for the lad staying above him! Warsi is heartbroken but Hydari changes tracks to soon profess her love for him—she loved him from the time he gifted her the locket which she has completed by adding her own picture on the other side of Warsi’s picture!

The Legend Of Michael Mishra has no story, script or sense of any sort. Nothing to be said about the direction and other aspects, all of which amount to zilch.

The Legend Of Michael Mishra is filmmaking at its worst.

    Producers: Kishor Arora, Shareen Mantri.

    Director: Manish Jha.

Cast: Arshad Warsi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Kayoze Irani, Boman Irani, Yuri Suri

    Fever….If you watch it!

Fever is a suspense thriller with its claim to recognition being two foreign female actors gracing its cast. These foreign actors being ex James Bond star, Caterina Murino, and a British TV actor, Gemma Atkinson, are supposed to give the film some draw! Besides that, the film is sought to be made to look like one out of Hollywood with a subject to match. The film is shot extensively on the picturesque locations of Switzerland.

Rajeev Khandelwal is lying in a hospital with most of his memory lost. His amnesia is total except that he remembers his name that he is from Paris and the visuals of a murder that haunt him. Soon he meets Gauhar Khan and he tries to piece together his past.

As it turns out, Rajeev is a contract killer as efficient with guns as he is in his approach with women. While Rajeev tries to recall his past, he demonstrates his memory loss with long drawn pauses to talk about it. Also, while recalling his past, he comes up with what is supposed to be the USB of this film that is steamy sex scenes with women in his life.

When inspired by numerous past masters of the suspense thriller genre, better would be to just stay inspired and not pick their props and treatment. While many have tried to create a really thrilling script of the suspense genere in past many decades among Hindi filmmakers, here too the attempt is bland and falls flat. Direction is average in keeping with the script. Music is soothing and would have worked had the film worked. The cinematography is a plus considering the film has beautiful locales to shoot at.

Performances are purely functional with Rajeev doing okay. The two foreigner actors contribute nothing to this department. Gauhar is passable.
Fever has had a poor opening and is expected to remain so through rest of the week.

Producers: Ravi Agrawal, Mahesh Balekundri, Ajay Chabbria and Rajath Manjunath.

    Director: Rajeev Jhaveri.

Cast: Rajeev Khandelwal, Gauhar Khan, Gemma Atkinson, Caterina Murino,
    Ankita Makwana.
