Arré Launches a music & comedy festival headlined by only women, called Arré Siren

MUMBAI: This Women’s Day weekend in March, all roads will lead to Arré SIREN – Arré Earworm’s first big step into the live music and entertainment space, in partnership with celebrated world music songstress Zila Khan.

Arré Earworm was launched last year and soon became the definitive voice of music and culture, through premium music content and live experiences that drive movements, scenes, and stories. Arré Siren is a one-of-its-kind media property driven via digital content, culminating into a two-day music and comedy festival headlined entirely by women artists that will bring together renowned musicians, stand-up comics, and role models to celebrate a year that has been seminal for women across the world.

The combined voice of powerhouse women entertainers has the potential to influence the zeitgeist and shape the dialogue in a way that laws and news opinion seldom can. Arré, Creative Editor, Sharan Saikumar said, “This two-day festival with unique digital content at its core, is our first step toward building an electrically charged community of young, liberated, and forward-thinking women who will shape a more equal future for all of us.”

“India has some of the most talented and enterprising women artists in the world, and they deserve to have a platform that gives them their due. There has been massive disparity in the representation of women artists at festivals across the globe. Even the most reputed festivals keep their headlining spots for male acts. We hope to change this trend through Arré Siren,” said Zila Khan.

Arré, Director, Jaideep Singh said, “We want the industry to be more inclusive, have greater gender diversity, and give more visibility to women. Along with the festival, we are also rolling out Siren Campus, a mentorship programme for exceptionally talented students and professionals through which they can meet and be mentored by some of the most successful women in the creative industry.”

Arré Siren will be held at one of Mumbai’s best live music venues, Razzberry Rhinoceros, on Juhu Beach. It will shine a spotlight on more than 15 artists, serving up an eclectic mix of exciting performances across genres like Hip Hop, Funk, Electronica, Jazz, and Indian Fusion, all of it served with a side dish of India’s best comedy. Over the next few days, Arré Siren will begin a concentrated content roll out that will include crowdsourcing projects, opinion polls, doodles, interviews, and The Siren Anthem, featuring all the artists in the line up.

Tickets for Siren are now live on Bookmyshow.com https://in.bookmyshow.com/mumbai/events/arre-siren-festival/ET00071234/artist. Grab a chance to create phenomenal memories and be a part of a festival that demonstrates India’s vibrant creative community and its forward-thinking new generation on March 10 and 11, 2018. Follow the Arré Siren Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/ArreSiren/) for announcements, updates, and engaging content.

The artist line up at the festival comprises of Richa Chadha, Sumukhi Suresh, Madboy/Mink, Raja Kumari, Maati Baani, Zila Khan, Kaneez Surkha, Urooj Ashfaq, Zoya, Sonali Thakker, Sumaira Shaikh, Mohini Dey and Ladies Compartment.

  • MIB has no data on OTTs; not under regulation: Minister

MIB has no data on OTTs; not under regulation: Minister

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday while admitting it has no official data relating to OTT industry, including number of players and subscribers, said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) doesn’t regulate internet-based video services.

“MIB does not regulate paid streaming and video-on-demand services provided over the internet. However, there are enough safeguards available under the Information Technology Act, 2000, which is administered by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), for content appearing on paid streaming and video-on-demand services,” MIB junior minister Rajyavardhan Rathore informed Indian Parliament’s Lower House or Lok Sabha.

The government stand is significant because increasingly voices of criticism were being heard from the conservative section of society questioning edgy content on OTT platforms that technically don’t have to follow any content code like done by linear TV, which also broadly follows guidelines on content as enumerated in the Cable TV Act 1997, apart from imposing self-regulations administered by industry bodies like NBA and IBF.

With original shows and serials on OTT platforms operating in India increasing by the day — egged on by global and domestic players like Netflix, Amazon, Hotstar, VOOT and Arre  — the fledgling industry segment has given content producers a platform where out-of-the-box themes are being tested and tried.

According to Rathore, who was answering a series of questions on the country’s OTT services, there were no official figures available with the ministry.

However, MIB quoted Frost & Sullivan to state it is estimated there were around 70 million unique connected viewers of which 1.3 million were paid video subscribers.

While not directly stating whether the government proposed any content regulations for OTT platforms, Rathore clarified that IT Ministry was empowered to block and/or censure content and its distributors on several grounds, including those relating to security of the country, foreign relations and pornography.

As of now OTT platforms in India could breathe easy as regulator TRAI, too, has not issued any guideline relating to OTT content preferring to restrict its diktat on the telecoms side of net neutrality. Still, many OTT platforms, some of which are digital extensions of traditional TV services owned by big broadcasting companies, prefer to do self-censorship on edgy content in shows like the Game of Thrones.

  • Arré premieres ‘The Adventures Of Abbaas Mastan’ on Facebook

MUMBAI: Arre is all set to take the viewers to the wildly fictionalised world of two film students on one global mission – to make the world’s most viral video. The Adventures Of Abbaas Mastan is a first-of-its-kind format, presented in the new universal language of gibberish where the entire cast of characters speak absolute nonsense while still making perfect sense.

Led entirely by subtitles, the series is a unique, language-agnostic show that can adapt itself to any expression without getting lost in translation. Currently featuring English subtitles, the show will soon be available in Hindi and other languages.

Arré founder B. Saikumar said, “The original idea behind the show was to do a humourous takedown of two of the world’s most pressing issues – terrorism and obsession with internet fame. With ‘The Adventures of Abbaas Mastan’, we’ve tried a whole new format based on gibberish-speak. The series captures the attempt of these blundering, well-meaning film buffs, who attempt to make a viral video in captivity.”

Abbaas and Mastan, fresh out of film school and die-hard fans of Karan Johar and Quentin Tarantino, are being held by a terrorist organisation to deliver 3 million views on a video. They try to channel the art of their masters as they plan the world’s most viral video… the beheading of a gora kaafir.

The show is a comedy of errors with two peaceable and lovable idiots at the centre, who are trying to find their way to Internet fame and remain true to their filmmaking idols in Hollywood and Bollywood… all the while desperately trying to avoid the actual beheading. Bhuvan Arora and Vyom Sharma win hearts with their portrayals of the peace-loving Abbaas and Mastan who are familiar with only one kind of shooting – the type that happens with a camera.

“When people come across posts and videos on Facebook that strongly resonate with them, they further share it with their friends. Good topical humour definitely strikes a chord with most and is a great conversation starter. We are excited to see how the Arré community on Facebook has built itself so strongly as a premium content destination with refreshing humorous content of a social nature. We wish them the very best for this series!” added FB India strategic partnership development -entertainment Biswamitra.

Season one of The Adventures Of Abbaas Mastan consists of four chapters and two episodes are live now.
