Republic TV continues to lead English News viewership

BENGALURU: There is rarely any middle ground as far as Republic TV Editor Arnab Goswami is concerned. Either you like him or you hate him. On his ‘debates’, which sometimes include long monologues by Goswami who is supposed moderator of the ‘debates’ either you agree with him or you disagree with him. But then this is what India seems to like – his completely nationalistic brouhaha, his often brutal coercions that often fail to impress the coerced, his interpretations of the statusco, his interruptions – this is what sets him a class apart – no other news anchor on Indian News Television has ever gained the admiration, the hatred, the fame, the popularity and the notoriety that Goswami has. And that is what has won his English Television News channel the eyeballs, the sticky eyeballs that make it the most watched Indian English Television News channel in the country in terms of weekly impressions. Except for a handful of exceptional weeks, Republic TV has retained leadership of the genre, right from the week that it launched about 3 years ago on 6 May 2017 – right in the middle of an ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season when a majority of Indians are glued to the channels that air the cricketing bonanza.

Earlier, Broadcast Audience Research Council of India limited publishing data for English News channels to NCCS Males 22+ Individual for the Top 5 English News channels in the public domain. Of late the ratings agency has started reporting data for ratings for Top 5 English News channels on a demographic of All India (U+R): NCCS All : 2+ Individuals. In either case, as mentioned above, Republic TV has been the genre leader.

Please refer to the chart below. Only 3 channels have been present in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 English News channels during the first 22 weeks of 2020. In alphabetical order, they are India Today Television, Republic TV and Times Now. Since Week 17 of 2020, Network18’s English News CNN News18 has also been present in BARC’s Weekly lists of Top 5 English News Channels. As a matter fact, during the first 22 weeks of 2020, CNN News18 was absent from BARC’s weekly top 5 English News channels only once – in Week 15 of 2020.

Top 5 English News Channels in Week 22 of 2020

Pubcaster Doordarshan’s DD India exited the list and was replaced by the Radhika and Pronnoy Roy headed group’s NDTV 24×7 at rank 5 which made its sixth entrance into the list during the first 22 weeks of 2020.

The first four channels in the list retained their ranks in Week 22 of 2020 as compared to the previous week. • Top 12 news anchors who stood out during Covid2019

Top 12 news anchors who stood out during Covid2019

MUMBAI: Indian news channels’Covid2019 and lockdown coverage has been panned by the naysayers. Some have painted it as falling short of being objective, others have labeled it as disastrous. Some have lauded the day-in-day-out incessant reportage as journos have gone from street to street, with their mask protected faces, gloved hands holding onto mikes, and giving updates from the virus plagued hotspots, overflowing hospitals and overburdened medical staff, as well as the hardships suffered by migrant labourer,  heading back to their villages.

Steering the conversations and the view of the channels have been a bunch of editors and anchors, specially those who have been on prime time broadcasts and have been indulging in important studio-debates, forcing the government and other machineries to act. Or react.

They have been pilloried, glorified, vilified, trolled, for whatever stance they have taken. If they have opined favorably on something that the government or community have done right, they have been bashed by hungry-to-knock-down-the-media wolf pack. This is even as they have been appreciated by hordes of  others.  If the journos have opposed the popular view, they have been kicked in their guts. Each statement, each word  they have stated has been scrutinized.  Many have resorted to grandstanding, some have been subdued, yet others have been balanced in their approach.

Most of them have gone about their jobs, no matter the flack they have faced. Being in the spotlight as they are daily, they have taken it as an occupational hazard. Indiantelevision.com has therefore decided to compile a list of anchors in no order of importance  or priority who created an impact, who had their voices heard, positively or negatively, and who constantly were in the news themselves, instead of just reporting  the news during the Covid2019 crisis on social and other media.  Read on. It may not be comprehensive, so we would appreciate your feedback.

    1) Arnab Goswami

Arnab Goswami, the firebrand face of Indian TV journalism, who has become a brand unto himself owing to his inimitable way of presenting his daily night news debates, is loved and riled by different sections of the masses. He articulates his point well, and doesn't mince words when it comes to uttering truths that would seem unpalatable to many. Often subjected to online trolling for his style of anchoring and political positions, particularly in his nocturnal prime-time debates, Goswami remains a popular name in social media discussions as well.

Goswami was seen holding a strong right-leaning stance on issues during his Covid2019 reporting too, maintaining his popularity. However, certain unpleasant events like an alleged attack on him and wife Samyabrata Ray by alleged Youth Congress workers earned him negative publicity, too.

He was caught in a massive legal soup, as well, with many Congress local bodies filing FIRs against him, across various states, under various sections of IPC, including hurting religious sentiments, inciting hatred, and criminal defamation. Goswami had to eventually knock on the doors of the supreme court demanding a CBI investigation in the matter, which was denied. Several FIRs were also quashed for being similar in nature.

    2) Barkha Dutt

There was a time when Barkha Dutt's name was among the top anchors of the country. After leaving NDTV, Dutt worked as an anchor and consulting editor with the Tiranga TV, funded by Congress leader Kapil Sibal. Her stint with the channel didn't last long.

Nowadays she has been active on her own YouTube channel MoJo Story. During the Covid2019 pandemic most of the TV news anchors have been working from studios. In contrast to them, Barkha decided to hit the roads, in the same manner how she used to do back then. With a crew of a handful people in a vehicle, Dutt has been travelling almost across north India to interview migrants to report about their problems and plights.

    3) Ravish Kumar

The firebrand journalist from NDTV, whom many would like to call anti-national, or overtly critical of the ruling party's work, did not change a single thing about his reporting style even during these testing times. Apart from his usual prime-time appearance, he added another show called "Des Ki Baat", the first episode of which aired on 6 May.

In both of his shows, Kumar was seen talking about issues related to the masses, including a detailed coverage on the issues of migrant labourers. Due to his and the channel's dynamic reporting, many viewers came forward to help the underprivileged with food and essentials.

    4) Sudhir Chaudhary

Zee News editor-in-chief Sudhir Chaudhary, who anchors a prime-time show called Daily News Analysis (DNA), was hitting headlines for his comments made on the Muslim community. Kerala police filed an FIR against Chaudhary for ‘offending’ the Muslim community during his show, wherein he explained various type of ‘Jihads’ in the community.

Terming it as a Pulitzer prize for telling the truth, Chaudhary tweeted that the FIR is politically motivated and an award for exposing inconvenient facts. He added, “A clear message for the media. If you don’t toe the decades-old the pseudo-secular line you’ll be behind bars.” These allegations were cheerfully received on the internet by Hindutva supporters, including BJP leader from Jammu and Kashmir Nirmal Singh.

However, soon after the FIR, Chaudhary did a special show where he was seen preaching Islam. On his primetime show he was seen educating his viewers about the five pillars of Islam.

    5) Rubika Liyaquat

The senior anchor of ABP News Rubika Liyaquat is one of the prominent faces of the network and has been contributing to the rise of viewership of the channel with her prime-time show called Seedha Sawaal. The network has been at the centre of a controversy when Covid2019 was on the rise in the country; many accused the channel for misleading the migrants, leading to a mob gathering at Bandra station.

Liyaquat came up with a Facebook message, rejecting any communal angle to the migrant protest at Bandra railway station, while the channel reported the story in another way. She in her message said, “While taking responsibility, I can inform you that this issue is not a Jamaatwala, or the Hindu-Muslim issue. Not at all. This is an issue of distressed migrants who didn’t know what to do.”

Liyaquat has often been targeted by her own community for supporting the government. Unaffected by these allegations Liyaquat continues to speak her mind. While regularly tweeting about her shows and expressing her views, she also posts verses from the Quran.  In one of her tweets, she wrote: “Jihad primarily refers to the inner struggle of being a person of virtue and submission to God in all aspects of life.”

Every now and then she is heavily ridiculed owing to her Muslim identity. But this has not stopped Rubika from doing her work. She retweeted a tweet in which she has been praised: “It’s commendable how being a Muslim she’s bashing those #NizamuddinIdiots who are supporting & defending their Maulana Sahab & the Markaj.”

    6) Rahul Kanwal

India Today news director Rahul Kanwal has been lately caught up in the storm of controversies after he carried out an investigation on "Madarsa Hotspots" in India amidst the spread of Covid2019 pandemic. He alleged that   Madarsas were hiding children in small rooms even after the Tablighi Jamaat fiasco.

Soon after this #ThooRahulKanwalThoo trended on Twitter and kanwal was brutally trolled by keyboard warriors for "dividing the victims of Covid2019 based on religion"

In other news, Telangana Minister for IT and Industries KT Rama Rao accused Kanwal of publishing false data on the number of PPE kits available in the state. Unfazed by these allegations Kanwal continues to do his work.

    7) Rajdeep Sardesai

India Today’s consulting editor and anchor Rajdeep Sardesai has been bringing prominent voices from different walks of life to the channel for their input on the crisis, some them include Indian-origin Nobel Laureate in economists Abhijit Banerjee and Ramon Magsaysay award winner and veteran journalist P Sainath.

Apart from this,  Sardesai created quite a stir on social media after claiming that Rahul Gandhi was ‘probably’ the first national politician to warn about the outbreak of Covid2019.  He implied that India would have been in a better position if the former Congress president was taken seriously.

    8) Rohit Sardana

Aaj Tak’s ‘Dangal with Rohit Sardana’ just like any other prime time show focused on the Jamaat, with the journalist zooming in on visuals obtained from inside the congregation hall of Nizamuddin Markaz where no one was practicing social distancing.

Sardana, who was heavily targeted for giving communal angle to the Jammat incident, says, “Corona ko corona ke jaise dekhiya, bimaari ko dharam ke chasme se nahi dekhiye”. (One should look at corona like corona, don’t look at the disease through the lens of religion.)

He also raised a question targeting Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackey.  “Santon ki sunegi sarkar?” asked  Sardana on Aaj Tak’s ‘Dangal’, referring to the Palghar lynching case. He said that Shiv Sena was once considered a “kattar (strict) Hindu party” but now the sadhu-saint community in India is upset with the party after the incident in which two sadhus from the Juna Akhada were violently beaten to death.

    9) Anjana Om Kashyap and Shweta Singh

Aaj Tak’s leading female faces Anjana Om Kashyap and Shweta Singh were seen playing a game of antakshari on air “Shuru karo antakshari, le kar Aaj Tak ka naam”. This was to lighten the stress of the viewers amid this testing time. They even invited viewers to participate in the game by sending videos of them singing which are later broadcast on TV.

The trend of playing antakshari was started by BJP minister Smriti Irani on twitter on the very first day of Janta curfew.

    10) Sumit Awasthi

Sumit Awasthi has joined ABP News as the consulting editor in 2018. Since then he has been accused of supporting BJP. When the lockdown was imposed he first congratulated the PM for “leading from the front” by making the cabinet ministers sit far apart from each other during their meeting. However, on the other hand, Awasthi expressed disappointment with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his Ram Navami puja in a crowded temple without wearing masks, gloves, or any sign of social distancing.  He even used a tweet by someone that said this kind of puja would not be accepted by God, as it puts lives in danger.

Awasthi who is very active on Twitter recently shared a post with the picture of Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Singh Yadav and Yogi Adityanath. In the post he is appealing to the ruling party and the opposition party in UP to stop the politics over the issue of migrant labourers and ridiculed them for not coming up with a concrete policy to help the workers.

The journalist was brutally trolled on twitter for supporting BJP and criticising the Congress and SP. But Awasthi seems to be unaffected by all this fiasco created on social media sites.

    11) Navika Kumar

Times Network group editor politics Navika Kumar despite every criticism has supported the NDA-led BJP government. When Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had questioned the PM-Cares scheme asking why it had to be launched when other similar schemes already existed.

Calling it a ‘political slugfest’ she said, “As India unites to fight a virus that threatens the world, Modi haters and opposition have joined hands to question his relief fund.”

Kumar called out the opposition party for their response, “While no one is taking rights away from the opposition but to question the existence of a fund created to help India come out and fight coronavirus seems to be rather petty.”

She raised a question: is fighting Modi bigger than fighting coronavirus?

    12) Rahul Shivshankar

Times Now editor-in-chief Rahul Shivshankar on his primetime show India Upfront targeted Congress for questioning financial aid provided by the Modi government. During the show, Shivshankar mentioned that over three lakh crore 'livelihood lifeline' has been given to migrants, vendors and farmers in Booster 2.0. “Narendra Modi Sarkar provides dignity not ‘Dole’,” says Shivshankar.

In one of his episodes, Shivshankar highlighted that India among other countries is doing better to flatten the curve which is questionable in the eyes of the opposition. He had said that India witnessed 40 per cent ‘robust’ recovery rate and a fatality rate which is one of the lowest.

Pointing towards the opposition, he asked: “Are critics still not convinced. Can they deny India’s graph?”

He exclaimed that the whole world has recognized the fact that India managed the pandemic better than many other countries. If the lockdown was not there, hell would’ve broken loose in India. The decision to impose lockdown has helped to prevent nearly 1.4 to 2.9 million Covid2019 infections in India.

Supreme Court refuses transfer of FIRs against Arnab Goswami to CBI

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to transfer to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the FIRs filed against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami. They are currently being investigation by the Mumbai Police. The apex court also refused to quash the FIR lodged against him in connection with his statements made recently on the Palghar mob-lynching case.

The SC bench comprising Justice DY Chandrachud and MR Shah, however, quashed the multiple FIRs lodged against Goswami in several states, which accused him of using hate speech, derogatory language against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

On 11 May the top court had reserved its verdict on two of his petitions. They also directed that no coercive action should be taken against Goswami in the fresh FIR lodged by the Mumbai Police.

Earlier, Goswami had claimed in the court that he was interrogated by Mumbai Police for more than 12 hours concerning an FIR on alleged defamatory statements. He claimed that one of the two investigating officers who were probing the case has tested positive for Covid2019.

Also, the Maharashtra government had moved the apex court alleging that Goswami has been misusing protection granted by the top court.

During the hearing, senior advocate Harish Salve, who is representing Goswami, had argued that this case is all about a certain political party targeting a journalist. He mentioned that the complainants are members of one particular party.

Meanwhile, Goswami's interim protection from arrest has been extended for another three weeks. During this time period Goswami can seek an appropriate remedy.

Supreme Court reserves order on Arnab Goswami’s plea to quash FIR

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court has reserved the orders on the writ petition filed by Republic TV managing director and editor in chief Arnab Goswami for quashing a FIR filed against him for allegedly disturbing communal harmony over the gathering of a large number of migrants in Bandra in Mumbai.

A bench, comprising Justice DY Chandrachud and MR Shah, provided interim protection to Arnab from coercive action in the FIR till the judgement is delivered. The protection from arrest granted to Arnab on 24 April shall continue to remain in operation until the apex court delivers the judgement in the next two days.

Arnab had sought the transfer of the case to the CBI, expressing doubts over the impartiality of the Mumbai police. His lawyer argued that the probe by the Mumbai police has a "chilling effect" on press freedom.

“What is the point we are arguing for? They are trying to stifle an unpleasant voice. The real purpose is to teach a journalist a lesson, by asking very silly questions during the investigation in the case… The whole thing was to teach me (Arnab) and my profession a lesson. However, I made it clear that we did our duty, nothing wrong in that,” Adv Harish Salve, appearing for Arnab Goswami, argued.

The FIR was filed under various sections of the IPC, which include for promoting enmity between different groups, outraging religious feelings of any class of citizens, etc.

Earlier, the apex court had given Arnab two week’s protection from arrest in the case of a series of FIRs filed against him in various courts in the country.

  • Arnab Goswami moves top court seeking to quash new FIR filed against him

Arnab Goswami moves top court seeking to quash new FIR filed against him

MUMBAI: Republic TV founding member and editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami has moved the Supreme Court for quashing of a new First Information Report (FIR) lodged against him for allegedly spreading communal hatred in connection with migrants’ protest at Bandra railway station in Mumbai on 14 April, Press Trust of India reported.

In its fresh petition in the apex court, Goswami mentioned that the FIR is ‘politically motivated’ and Mumbai police ‘harbours ill-will and malice’ towards him. This is the second such instance that Goswami has knocked the Supreme Court’s door to quash the FIR registered against him.

Earlier, multiple FIRs were filed against him in various states for making a derogatory comment on Congress president Sonia Gandhi for keeping mum on the Palghar Lynching. Ruling in Gowami’s favour, the apex court had cancelled all the FIRs except one in Nagpur, which has been transferred to Mumbai and has allowed police to proceed with an investigation.

The top court had granted interim protection to the Republic TV editor-in-chief for three weeks and ruled that no coercive action should be taken against him, while quashing all the FIRs except one.

Referring to a report aired on Republic TV on April 29, the complainant, Irfan Abubakar Shaikh, secretary of Raza Educational Welfare Society, had said that Goswami targeted a mosque in Bandra that had no link with the migrants’ protest. Shaikh accusing Goswami of trying to spread hatred against the Muslim community.

The Pydhonie police station filed a case against Goswami on May 2. The complainant in his FIR said the debate on the channel intended to blame the Muslim community for the spread of the novel coronavirus.

With a demand they be sent back to their hometowns, thousands of migrants, who are facing difficulty to survive during the nationwide lockdown, had gathered outside Bandra railway station. The mob gathering was an outcome of a media report that had allegedly said a decision had been made to run special trains to send migrant workers back to their hometowns.

  • Brand Arnab unhurt by controversies

    Brand Arnab unhurt by controversies

MUMBAI: Arnab Goswami has been hogging the limelight from the beginning of this week, first with his impromptu resignation from the Editors Guild of India during a live television debate show, and now for the multiple FIRs filed against him for making derogatory comment against a political personality during a live debate. The Supreme Court has given him three weeks’ protection from arrest.

Follow Tellychakkar for the consumer facing news & entertainment

Goswami, a founding member and editor-in-chief of the Republic Media Network, has hogged the limelight even as the country is racked by the COVID-19 crisis. But will these recent controversies affect the brand image of Goswami and his channel? Certainly not! On the other, they will only help Republic TV gain some traction, point out media agencies and brand experts.

“The controversy will have little effect on viewership or sponsorship; in fact, it might attract more viewers,” says FCB Ulka executive creative director Anindya Banerjee. “As a brand, Republic TV has managed to stay in the news in more ways than one. The people, who watch it, know it, and love it.”

Banerjee further says: “The brands which are associated with the channel are aware of it and love the fact that consumers engage with the news channel.”

Echoing the same view, Havas Media, India and Southeast Asia chief executive officer Anita Nayyar says: “Logically, any positive controversy lends positivity and a negative one lends negativity. And, the controversy garners a lot of eyeballs and in any case brands ride on it, if deemed fit.”

The apex court has ruled in favour of Goswami, granting protection from arrest in the case of FIRs filed against him in various states. A source close to the Republic TV says: “This case will probably set a benchmark and precedent of any such future cases. Here, multiple FIRs were filed. But tools like this cannot be used in any negative manner. It’s a big win for the media company.”

Republic TV has been the most-watched news channel in India for the straight fifteenth week so far this year, according to the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) of India. And, while dwindling ad revenues have affected the majority of television channels due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Republic is unaffected by any such revenue losses, according to a top official of the network.

Says DigitalKites senior vice-president Amit Lall: “Brands relate to Arnab Goswami because of his success story as an individual. The moment it comes to brands, it always picks and chooses people who are safe and try to be neutral. They don’t like people, who are volatile or impromptu. Brands will continue to put money into it (Republic TV), purely because it has viewership. And, don’t think controversies like such would impact the advertising sales of the network,” says Lall.

Comniscient Group chief executive officer N Chandramouli says: “Arnab Goswami understands its audience well and have managed to create an audience clutter which nobody has. People believe in his perspective and take him seriously, which helps him get viewership and TRPs for his news channels. He is driven by his audience; we think he has an agenda but his audience has an agenda. Republic TV is completely audience-driven and believes he delivers for his consumers.”

Arnab Goswami rose to become one of the prominent journalists during his 10-year stint at Times Network where he was an editor-in-chief and primetime anchor of Times Now, which went on to become one of the most-watched news channels then under his editorship. The channel had eventually started getting traction due to his face value. In 2016, Goswami started his own news network, Republic Media, and holds a controlling stake in the company with over 80 per cent of shares.

  • Editors Guild of India, PCI condemn attack on Arnab Goswami

Editors Guild of India, PCI condemn attack on Arnab Goswami

MUMBAI: The Editors Guild of India (EGI) and Press Council of India (PCI) have strongly condemned the alleged attack on Republic TV’s editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and his wife Samyabrata Ray by two people on a bike late Wednesday night, 22 April.

EGI in its statement said: “Any physical attack, instigation for hate or verbal abuse hurled against any journalist is a reprehensible act. The freedom to express one’s views or report facts without any fear or intimidation whatsoever is the most fundamental tenet of journalism.”

The guild has asked the Mumbai police to book those who had attacked the editor and his wife.

Goswami, during a live debate show on Monday, resigned from the membership of EGI while discussing the Palghar lynching incident. He accused EGI of promoting fake news by a few media outlets and keeping mum on the recent lynching in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

PCI, condemning the attack on Goswami and his wife, said: “Every citizen in the country including a journalist has the right to express their opinion which may not be palatable to many but this does not give anybody the authority to strangulate such voice.”

“Violence is not the answer even against bad journalism,” it said and urged the state government to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime and bring them to justice immediately.

“While taking suo motu cognisance in the matter, the PCI’s chairman has directed the government of Maharashtra, through the chief secretary and commissioner of police, Mumbai to submit a report on the facts of the case at the earliest,” the statement reads.

“It is a clear indication that truth will prevail and the faith in the judiciary is something we as a body always take pride in. "NBF is also pleased with the order that refused to place restraint or restrictions on the media, thus upholding the freedom of expression and press freedom," said, NBF secretary general R Jai Krishna.

"We wholeheartedly welcome the Supreme Court's verdict granting three weeks of interim protection and no coercive action against Arnab Goswami. Sharma, chairperson and managing director, Pride East Entertainments

“It’s a great relief to see the country’s highest judiciary giving Arnab protection from arrest and it’s a welcome decision” said Fourth Dimension Media CEO Shankar B.

"This is a big victory for the media and the judiciary has once again saved the media from being intimidated from the politicians or governments. We stand by Arnab and believe he will come out stronger after this." said Sanjive Narain, founder, Prag News (Assam).

"Any form of physical attack, abuse or instigation for violence against a journalist should be condemned. Journalists are duty-bound to report on facts without fear. The freedom of the fourth estate is the basic tenet of any democratic society. Goswami’s attackers should be prosecuted as per the law and the authorities should ensure that the goons do not get away." said iTV Network founder Kartikeya Sharma.
