    MUMBAI: In a game of inches and intense competition, Nasreen Shaikh has secured the ultimate victory not just on the field, but off it as well. The former captain of the Indian women’s kho-kho team and Arjuna Awardee has clinched the coveted BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year – Changemaker Award. The award, which took centre stage at the Taj Palace, New Delhi on 17 February 2025, recognises her monumental role in elevating kho kho both nationally and internationally.

    This recognition follows the resounding success of the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup, held in Delhi, where India dominated by winning both the men’s and women’s World Cups. Shaikh’s rise mirrors the sport’s own trajectory, transforming kho kho from a regional pastime to a global contender.

    Shaikh’s reaction? “Kho Kho is more than a sport; it’s a passion that has shaped my life,” she said, reflecting on the award. “This honour acknowledges not just my journey but the efforts of every athlete striving to make a mark in Indian sports. I am grateful for this recognition and eager to take Kho Kho to even bigger stages.”

    International Kho Kho Federation (IKKF) and the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) president Sudhanshu Mittal presented the award, praising Shaikh’s contributions. He remarked, “Her dedication has not only brought glory to Indian sports but has also brought Kho Kho into the spotlight. Nasreen is an inspiration, and we are confident she will continue to lead the sport to new heights.”

    This prestigious recognition places kho kho in the spotlight, revealing its growing global appeal and the potential it holds as an exciting, high-intensity sport. As Shaikh continues to make waves, it’s clear that kho kho’s future is looking more competitive and commercially viable than ever.

  • P.V. Sindhu Panasonic Batteries’ face for 3 yrs

    MUMBAI: PV Sindhu, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist, currently ranked World No.6, dawns a new role starting today as the brand ambassador of Panasonic Energy India Co. Ltd – one of India’s largest manufacturer & supplier of dry cell batteries and lighting products.

    The 21 year old, ace-badminton player has been signed on for Panasonic’s Battery division for the next three years as a part of strategic decision to enrich the brand image and challenge the ‘numero uno’ position.

    “Panasonic batteries have always been known for its performance and reliability. I am looking forward to carry forth this communication and be a part of the growth journey,” stated Sindhu at the event.

    “PV Sindhu exudes power and performance through her sport. These are precisely the traits that Panasonic Batteries are known for,” stated Panasonic India and South-Asia president and CEO Manish Sharma.

    Born in Hyderabad, Ms. Sindhu is the youngest recipient of India’s fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. She is the youngest and the very first Indian shuttler to have reached the finals of a women’s singles event in an Olympics badminton event. She’s also a recipient of other prestigious awards such as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in Sports among others.

    Composition of Sports Committees, awards eligibility criteria announced

    NEW DELHI: The composition of various Indian sports committees as well as the eligibility criteria for sports awards have been announced.

    The chairman for the Arjuna Award selection committee will be headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court or High Court. Additionally, other sports committees including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, and Dronacharya Award will be headed by persons nominated by the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry.

     

    Sports Minister Sarbanand Sonowal told Parliament that the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar committee will be headed by the Secretary in the Ministry.

    Olympics winners to be automatically shortlisted for Arjuna Awards

    NEW DELHI: The last couple of years have seen sports apart from cricket gaining popularity amongst viewers. Continuing with the trend, now winners of medals in Olympics and Paralympics will automatically be considered for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna or Arjuna Award.

     

    However, it will depend on the type of medal won and if they have already not been conferred with either of the two awards.

     

    In the rules finalised by the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry for giving Arjuna Award to the sportspersons from 2014 onwards, for cricket and indigenous games not  included in Olympic / Asian Games / Commonwealth Games disciplines, the Selection Committee will recommend the number of awards, (not exceeding two),  to be given for Cricket/indigenous games and recommend the sportspersons taking into consideration their individuals performances and qualities of sportsman spirit, leadership, sense of discipline etc.

     

    Ninety per cent weightage will be given for the medals won in various international championships and sports events of the disciplines covered in Olympic Games (Summer, Winter and Paralympics), Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

    MUMBAI: Reinforcing its commitment to fitness in India, Reebok has announced the ‘Reebok Running Squad’. The initiative is aimed at training consumers for the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon scheduled to take place on 15 December 2013.

     

    An integral part of the Reebok Fit India movement, the Reebok Running Squad provides consumers professional training and guidance across seven locations in New Delhi.  Runners will also get a chance to earn their Reebok branded special runner kits, personalised training schedules and many more exciting prizes., A former national level marathon and Arjuna award recipient Sunita Godara is the master trainer for the program.

     

    The Reebok Running Squad has been specially designed keeping in mind that running the half marathon requires stamina, endurance and strength. According to adidas India managing director Erick Haskell, “Reebok is committed to fitness and through our initiatives we wish to engage the customer at every touch point and encourage them to adopt the philosophy of ‘Fit for Life’. Reebok Running Squad is a one of a kind fitness initiative which has been designed to specifically train consumers to run a half marathon or develop the right running technique for their everyday run. We hope that through this initiative we can encourage more and more people to participate in regular fitness activities and lead a more active and healthy lifestyle’’  

     

    The Reebok Running Squad training program will begin on 15 October 2013 and will include eleven weeks of grueling workouts.
