George Clooney to receive Cecil B DeMille award at Golden Globes

MUMBAI: Hollywood star George Clooney will be the recipient of the Cecil B DeMille Award at the 2015 Golden Globes, announced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

HFPA president Theo Kingma stated that the HFPA is honoured to bestow the Cecil B. DeMille Award to George Clooney to celebrate his outstanding contributions both in front of and behind the camera.

The actor, producer, writer and director co-founded ‘Not On Our Watch’, an organisation that works to fight genocides around the world. In 2008, Clooney was designated as a UN Messenger of Peace and two years later, he with Joel Gallen and Tenth Planet Productions co-produced a telethon, ‘Hope for Haiti’, which raised $66 million for the Haiti earthquake relief.

Clooney has already been nominated for Golden Globe awards 13 times and won three including ‘Best Actor in a Drama’ for The Descendants (2011), ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Syriana (2005) and ‘Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical’ for O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000).

The 53-year-old has also won two Oscars – one for his supporting role in Syriana and the other as a producer of 2013’s best picture winner, Argo

Clooney most recently appeared in Gravity and The Monuments Men, the latter of which he also directed, co-wrote and produced. He stars next in Brad Bird’s sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland for Disney and is also slated to direct a film about Britain’s phone-hacking scandal.

Previous recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille award include Jodie Foster, Steven Spielberg, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas and Martin Scorsese. Woody Allen received the honour last year.

Clooney will receive his award when the Golden Globes air on NBC on 11 January 2015.

  • ‘Argo’, ‘Life of Pi’ scoop top Oscar Awards

‘Argo’, ‘Life of Pi’ scoop top Oscar Awards

MUMBAI: On Oscar night the ‘Argo‘ juggernaut which had been building ever since the Oscar nominations came out proved unstoppable. The Ben Affleck directed film won three Oscars – Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing. It was the first time in over two decades that a film won the Best Picture Oscar without the director being nominated. It also beat four films that had more nominations which has also not happened in a long time. Michelle Obama made the announcement of the winner in the Best Picture category from the White House. Obama‘s appearance was a big surprise as were some of the musical numbers that were performed.

Ang Lee won the Oscar for Best Director. His movie ‘Life of Pi‘ was considered to be the directorial achievement of the year by many film fans since it was adapted from a novel that many felt was ‘unfilmmable‘. ‘Life Of Pi‘ also marked the first time that the director of a 3D film won.

Lee thanked his crew in Taiwan and India. After accepting the trophy, signed off with a ‘Namaste‘ and said (while he was backstage), "Here‘s the thing. I think it‘s a miracle I could make this movie. I carried the anxiety for a very long time. For four years. It‘s a philosophical movie and an expensive one."

‘Life Of Pi‘ won four Oscars, the most for any film, including trophies for visual effects, score, director and cinematography. The technical wins were expected. But to win director Lee had to beat stiff competition from Steven Spielberg for ‘Lincoln‘ which had a most disappointing evening. While it got the most nominations – 12 it only won for Best Actor Daniel Day Lewis which was expected and also for production design.

That was the trend through the Oscar season where at previous awards shows like the Baftas ‘Lincoln‘ got the most nominations but only kept winning for Daniel Day Lewis. He is the first actor to win the Oscar three rimes for Best Actor In a Leading Role. Apart from ‘Lincoln‘ also faring poorly was ‘Silver Linings Playbook. It only got one Oscar for Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence despite hectic Oscar campaigning.

The independent film ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild‘ did not get anything. Kathryn Bigelow‘s ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, the film about how the CI.A. hunted Osmama Bin Laden, luckily survived a similar fate when it tied for a sound award with Skyfall‘. Adele who sang the song for the Bond film also won. ‘Amour‘ like ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, also had a disappointing showing with just one win for Best Foreign Film. The film‘s female lead Emmanuelle Riva was considered a hefty candidate for the Best Actress category.

Faring better was ‘Les Miserables‘ which had the second most wins behind ‘Life of Pi‘ – three including for supporting actress Anne Hathaway. "There are so many people whose support and generosity is the reason I‘m standing here right now," Hathaway said. Quentin Tarantino won for original Screenplay for ‘Django Unchained‘. He said that 2012 was the year of writers. The movie also picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz. This was his second Oscar. His first win also came from a Tarantino film ‘Inglourious Basterds‘ a few years ago.

‘Argo’ gathers momentum with WGA win

MUMBAI: ‘Argo‘ has solidified itself as the film to beat for the Best Picture Oscar. The Ben Affleck directed film has won the Writers Guild of America (WGA) award for best adapted screenplay.

It beat out competition that included ‘Lincoln‘ which was written by Tony Kushner and ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ which was written and directed by David O Russell.

The award for Best Original Screenplay went to Mark Boal who wrote ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘. It is about how America hunted Osama Bin Laden.

Malik Bendjelloul won for best documentary for ‘Searching for Sugar Man‘. On the television side ‘Breaking Bad‘ won for television drama and comedian Louis C.K.‘s FX series, ‘Louie‘ won for best comedy series.

The HBO comedy ‘Girls‘ won for best new series.

History Channel‘s ‘Hatfields And McCoys‘ won for best original television long form writing and HBO‘s ‘Game Change‘ won for best adapted television long form.

The IFC series ‘Portlandia‘ took the prize for comedy/variety series and ‘The 66th Annual Tony Awards‘ won for best comedy/variety special. ‘The Simpsons‘ won for TV animation.

  • Argo wins BAFTA award

    Argo wins BAFTA award

MUMBAI: Iran hostage drama Argo won three awards including best-picture, at yesterday‘s British Academy Film Awards.

Ben Affleck was named best director for the film based on a real story of a long shot plan to rescue a group of American diplomats from Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the film also took the editing trophy.

Quipped George Clooney, one of the producers of Argo,”I don‘t know what you‘re going to do for a third act.”

Daniel Day-Lewis won the best-actor trophy for Lincoln – the only prize out of 10 nominations for Steven Spielberg‘s historical biopic. Emmanuelle Riva, the 85-year-old French film legend, was named best actress for Michael Haneke‘s poignant old-age portrait Amour. It also was named best foreign-language film.

On the other hand, Les Miserables won four awards including best supporting actress for Anne Hathaway. James Bond adventure Skyfall won trophies for best music and best British film.

Meanwhile, Suraj Sharma, who was nominated in the EE Rising Star Award for his role on Life Of Pi, lost the trophy to actress Juno Temple. Juno, the actress of The Atonement was clearly more popular than Sharma as the rising star trophy is the only award at BAFTA that is decided by public vote.

  • Ben Affleck wins DGA award for Argo

Ben Affleck wins DGA award for Argo

MUMBAI: The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has awarded Ben Affleck for helming the film Argo, a thriller that centers around the rescue of American hostages in Iran. French director Michel Hazanavicius presented the award to the 40-year-old director.

Also competing for the top director‘s award were Steven Spielberg for Lincoln, Kathryn Bigelow‘s Zero Dark Thirty, Tom Hooper for Les Miserables and Ang Lee for Life of Pi.

Affleck said, “I worked really hard to try to become the best director that I can be. I don‘t think that this makes me a real director but I think it means I‘m on the way.”

Usually, the winner of the DGA prize also wins the Oscar for best director, but Affleck has not been nominated for an Oscar in this category though Argo has received as many as seven Oscar nominations including that of best picture.

  • ‘Argo’ continues awards momentum with Guild wins

‘Argo’ continues awards momentum with Guild wins

MUMBAI: ‘Argo‘ has emerged as the favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar after it won the Producers Guild of America (PGA) award for best film and the Screen Actors Guild (Sag) ensemble award over the weekend.

Earlier in the month the film had won Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards for picture and director. Elsewhere ‘Lincoln‘ got two Sag awards for Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones. Anne Hathway won a supporting Sag trophy for her role in the musical ‘Les Miserables‘.

‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ which had been considered a favourite to win the Sag ensemble got just one trophy for Jennifer Lawrence.

Last year three of the four Sag winners went on to win Oscar awards. The directors Guild of America (DGA) awards are on Saturday. While Benn Affleck who made ‘Argo‘ could win that as well, he will not win the Oscar for best director as he has not been nominated.

  • ‘Argo’, ‘Les Miserables’ triumph at Golden Globe Awards

‘Argo’, ‘Les Miserables’ triumph at Golden Globe Awards

MUMBAI: ‘Argo‘ and ‘Les Miserables‘ were the two big winners at the 70th edition of the Golden Globe Awards. They won Best Picture for a drama and musical/comedy respectively.

Ben Affleck also won an award for directing. In his acceptance speech, he congratulated directors both nominated and not nominated. He will not win an Oscar for directing though as he not been nominated. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) which organises the Golden Globe Awards also appreciated ‘Django Unchained‘. Quentin Tarantino won for his screenplay while Christoph Waltz won a Golden Globe for Supporting Actor.

‘Lincoln‘ which had seven nominations won just one award for its lead actor in a drama Daniel Day Lewis. On the comedy side Hugh Jackman won for ‘Les Miserables‘. As far as actress was concerned Jessica Chastain won for ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ the film about America hunting down Osama Bin Laden. On the comedy side Jennifer Lawrence won for ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘.

  • ‘Lincoln’, ‘Life Of Pi’ top Oscar nominations

‘Lincoln’, ‘Life Of Pi’ top Oscar nominations

MUMBAI: ‘Lincoln‘ continued to gain strong momentum in the Hollywood awards season. The Steven Spielberg biopic got 12 nominations. Just behind is Ang Lee‘s ‘Life of Pi‘ with 11 nominations.

Both are among the nine pictures nominated for best film. The others are ‘Argo‘, ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘, ‘Amour‘, ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, ‘Beasts Of The Southern Wild‘, ‘Django Unchained‘ and ‘Les Miserables‘. Missing from the list are ‘Skyfall‘, ‘The Master‘ and ‘Moonrise Kingdom‘.

But the big surprise is in best director. Apart from Lee and Spielberg none of the other three directors who were nominated for the DGA have gotten in. This includes Kathryn Bigelow who helmed critics favourite ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ and Ben Affleck for ‘Argo‘. That seriously hurts both these films‘ chances of winning the best picture Oscar. The last time a film won best picture without its director being nominated was ‘Driving Miss Daisy‘ way back in 1989.

Apart from Lee and Spielberg, the directors competing for an Oscar are Michael Hanecke for ‘, Benh Zeitlin for ‘Beasts Of The southern Wild‘ and David O Russell for ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘.Amour

Another big surprise is in foreign language film. The nominees do not include ‘The Intouchables‘. ‘Amour‘ is the favourite to win here. The other nominees are ‘Kon-Tiki‘, ‘No‘, ‘A Royal Affair‘ and ‘War Witch.

The best actress category has the oldest ever nominee Emannuelle Riva for ‘Amour‘ and the youngest ever in Quvenzhané Wallis in “Beasts of the Southern Wild”. But the race is probably a shootout between Jessica Chastain for ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ and Jennifer Lawrence for ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘. Naomi Watts in ‘The Impossible‘ has also made the cut.

Lawrence has a bit of an edge in that ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ did better than expected. It got eight nominations including one in supporting actress for Jackie Weaver. It is the only movie to have been nominated in all the acting categories. ‘Les Miserables‘ also got eight nominations, though more were expected. Its helmer Tom Hooper has been left out.

  • Argo at no. 1 with Cloud Atlas taking a beating

Argo at no. 1 with Cloud Atlas taking a beating

MUMBAI: In a downturn, Warner Bros‘ Cloud Atlas opened at a disappointing No. 3 with $9.4 million. The situation helped Ben Affleck‘s Argo to rise to the No. 1 position in its third weekend as four new releases bombed at the box office.
It is said that pre-Halloween parties, football and the World Series were more of a distraction. However, New York City grosses were hurt on Sunday as theatres shut down in advance of the approaching mega storm.
Argo grossed $12.4 million from 2,855 theatres for an appreciating North American total of $60.8 million. The film dropped 25 per cent and is the first movie since The Blind Side to come in the No. 1 spot for the first time in its third weekend.
There was more bad news for Cloud Atlas. It also was beaten by holdover Hotel Transylvania that narrowly claimed the No. 2 spot with $9.5 million from 3,276 locations in its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $130.4 million.
The $100 million Cloud Atlas came in at No. 3 with $9.4 million from 2,008 locations. The film, hurt by a C+ CinemaScore and mixed reviews, will need to make a strong showing internationally.
