    MUMBAI:  Adil Memon, Zee Entertainment’s long-standing content and marketing whiz, has now taken the hot seat as acting territory head – Mena at the broadcaster. After nearly 18 years of crafting desi drama into Arabic hits, Memon’s elevation signals a stronger push into cross-cultural storytelling and commercial innovation.

    The media veteran is best known for pioneering co-produced Arabic originals based on Indian formats—a savvy blend of Indian cinema  flair and Middle Eastern flavour that’s helped Zee cement its regional footprint.

    ‘Water’ to be the opening film at 4th Jagran Film Festival

    The 4th edition of the Jagran Film Festival, Mumbai 2013 will begin with the film Water and will be screened on 24 September at Fun Republic in Andheri, Mumbai. Water is a 120 minute feature film born out of a unique Israeli-Palestinian cinematic cooperation. Produced by the Film and Television department of the Tel Aviv University in association with Tu Vas Voir, the project Water is made in HD, colour. Yael Perlov had initiated this project and is also the artistic director of Water. Its original version is in Arabic, Hebrew, and English.

     

    Taking complete artistic freedom, in 2012, a small group of Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers directed a feature film that explored a strong unifying subject – Water. Besides being a highly poetic and pastoral subject, Water is also a very political and violent subject with respect to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Water is about two conflicting populations, which couldn’t overcome the prejudice and political intimidations, but ultimately finds a platform for a unique collaboration, in the form of this feature film. This is one of the reasons why Water is so special.

     

    Cinema always has the ability to penetrate forbidden zones and Water exemplifies that. It has made all of us realise that we all yearn for a solution to this long-going on conflict. Several Directors have interpreted this subject in their own creative way, which together has given shape to Water.

     

    The film, a unique piece of art has been screened at various international film festivals, Venice International Film Festival, Jerusalem Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Mostra International de Cine de Sa? Paulo, Brazil, Stockholm International Film Festival, Swedenand many others. This is the Asian Premiere of the film.

    Euronews launches in Arabic

    MUMBAI: Euronews, which covers world affairs from a European perspective, has started broadcasting in its eighth language, Arabic, from 12 July. The other languages of broadcast are: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.

    Euronews Arabic will use the existing distribution network globally. The channel has been carried on two new satellites of the Arabsat fleet, since 1 July, via digital transmission to extend its reach to a potential audience of nearly 32 million households in the Middle East, says a company release.

    Euronews claims that with these two satellites, the channel is now available in 248 million households in 135 countries worldwide.

    For the new channel, Euronews has recruited a 17-member team of Arabic-speaking journalists. The team is headed by Mohamed Abdel Azim, who participated in the original launch of Euronews in 1993, and is made up of journalists from eight different countries: Algeria (6), Bahrain (1), Egypt(1 + the head of the Arabic team), Lebanon (3), Morocco (1), Palestinian territories (1), Syria (1) and Tunisia (2).

    “We must build an intellectual and cultural bridge over the Mediterranean; a bridge founded on mutual understanding and shared values. Increased cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region is of vital and strategic importance for all partners in political, economic and cultural terms. Euronews in Arabic will contribute to the exchange of cultures between the European Union and the peoples of other parts of the world, in particular from the other side of the Mediterranean and the Middle East,” said European Parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering.

    Adding further, Euronews chairman and CEO Philippe Cayla said, “Our Arabic version will help Arabic-speakers to better understand the framework and issues around European policies. Euronews Arabic will also enhance the channel’s position as an international reference for global news.”

    Infront, HBS win Judges’ Award at IBC2006 in Amsterdam

    MUMBAI: Infront Sports & Media, the company which handled the worldwide marketing and sales of the broadcast rights to 2006 Fifa World Cup and its subsidiary Host Broadcast Services (HBS) have won the Judges’ Award at the IBC show in Amsterdam.

    HBS was responsible for the host broadcast operations of the 2006 Fifa World Cup.

    The award was for New Media production at the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany. The tailored production services provided by HBS transformed the coverage of the event for New Media in terms of quality and content. The prospect of tailored production drove sales – this was the most widely covered sports event on the internet and on mobile phones to date. More than 100 countries were covered by 50 licensees in Mobile Telephony and World Wide Web.

    A team of 40 producers and journalists created a special New Media Content Package – tailor-made for licensees, designed for exploitation without the need for extensive editing and incorporating various innovations designed specifically for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The near-live clips were enhanced with specific or customised match and competition summaries, graphics, background sound, music and commentary.

    The fact that this was the first FIFA World Cup covered entirely in HDTV opened the door to improved picture quality for New Media. HD video-based Pan and Scan technology was utilised, allowing the editor to zoom in and capture the core action, producing a clear picture more exciting than ever for tiny handsets.

    HBS also offered a voice-over commentary service in the language of one’s choice. A total of eight different languages were booked and produced simultaneously in the IBC during the tournament: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swiss German.

    The benefits for licensees were considerable – better quality production, reduction of cost per licensee through central multilateral production and HD-based content, delivering “never seen before” picture quality in small formats.

    HBS director of production Peter Angell received the Award on behalf of HBS and Infront. He said, “This award confirms that our two companies, Infront and HBS, were right in deciding to embed new media requirements in the overall production strategy, providing licensees with a level of service never experienced before. The fact that all matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup were filmed in HDTV has transformed the quality of New Media coverage.

    ” Combined with the use of Pan and Scan technology to capture the core action in a way that is relevant for tiny handsets, it has delivered pictures of unprecedented quality. Licensees and consumers were thrilled”, he said in his acceptance speech.

    HBS CEO Francis Tellier said, “This special award acknowledges the quality of services and innovations our team has provided in the area of host broadcasting. The new media production of the 2006 Fifa World Cup has been the defining step forward and underlines our ambition, to lead the industry through innovation.”

    Infront Sports & Media president and CEO Philippe Blatter says, “We are proud that the outstanding production capabilities of the Infront Group have been recognised and we see this year’s IBC Judges’ Award as a challenge to push even further in future”.
