This 171-minute epic on the early years of the prophet of Islam is considered the most expensive film made in Iran, with a budget of over $50 million. The entire production took five years. Renowned Indian composer AR Rahman also contributed to the music of the film.

MWFF president Serge Losique said, “The Festival is very proud to be able to host the premiere of this important work, a film of very high artistry aimed at a very wide audience, There have been many movies dealing with key figures of the world’s great religions, including Jesus, Moses and Buddha, but this is only the second epic screen treatment of Islam’s founder.”

Majidi will be present in Montreal along with principal members of his cast and crew.

The Festival, which is the only one in north America to be recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) will take place from 27 August to 7 September.

  • Music streaming service Guvera tots 10 million users globally; 3 million in India

Music streaming service Guvera tots 10 million users globally; 3 million in India

MUMBAI: Global music streaming service Guvera has reached a milestone of 10 million users. Achieving yet another milestone since its inception in India, Guvera has now garnered a database of over three million users in India.

Guvera has grown from a user base of 1.5 million users in October 2014, to 10 million users in April 2015 globally. A growth that is a testament to their impact on the music streaming industry globally – with over 35,000 users joining the service each day, across the world, over the past 22 weeks.

This milestone follows hot on the heels of Guvera’s acquisition of blinkbox Music in the UK from Tesco in January 2015, which brought with it 2.5 million registered users. One of Guvera’s fastest-growing markets, India, has also just recently celebrated its three millionth user, representing significant growth since launching in November 2014.

“As a young brand, we welcome the 10 millionth user to the Guvera platform with a real sense of pride and delight. We’re thrilled to see Guvera’s global community growing daily and we hope to bring more music lovers on board as we enter new markets in 2015. We believe our growth is also testament to the success of our unique non-disruptive ad-funded model, which allows our users to discover and play the best expert curated music,” said Guvera CEO Darren Herft.

Guvera’s commitment to providing music via an ad-funded model is continuing to be seamlessly integrated with the user experience via the use of branded channels. Brands including Yes Bank, Harley Rock Riders, Ezeego1 and Shaadi.com have partnered with Guvera to bring the innovative concept of Branded Channels to life, giving Guvera users exclusive access to their playlists, offers and content.

Herft added, “Branded channels are a great example of how users are able to engage with brands in a less disruptive manner. Guvera is putting the consumer in charge of the advertising experience. Moreover, advertisers know that they are paying for ads that consumers want. We believe that Guvera is a platform for advertisers and brands to connect with a significant database of users, made possible with the help of Guvera’s innovative content-targeting algorithm.”

The company will continue to focus on its ‘programmed globally, tuned locally’ approach. Guvera’s growth has been helped by its unique customer focused services that are conceptualized by placing the user at the centre of its innovation.

Additionally, the company has also released listening trends based on the Indian user consumption data gathered by its local team in the market. The research points out that amongst the Indian user landscape, the states of West Bengal, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are India’s top music streaming states. Amongst these findings, it was also seen that India’s top 3 streamed artists were Arijit Singh at No.1, followed by Yo Yo Honey Singh at No. 2 and Divya Kumar at No.3.

The top category of playlists that resonated most with the users were #love, #dance, #Rahman (music by AR Rahman) and #Pop. Lastly, the research also throws light on the demographics that are most active with the age groups between 18 – 24 years and 25 – 29 years emerging at the top.

Guvera’s global partnership with Lenovo will also see the Guvera app pre-loaded onto Lenovo smartphones and tablets across a potential 160 markets in which Lenovo operates, giving Guvera huge potential to reach millions more people around the world.

Earlier this month, Guvera debuted its newest innovation Fradio at SXSW. Currently available in the USA and Australia (with plans to further expand in 2015), via iOS and Android, Fradio allows users to host their own radio broadcasts using tracks on the Guvera music library. Friends and fans can then listen to and interact with the broadcast in real time, through live talk-back, comments and track requests.

  • News7 Tamil to be run by an ‘editorial board’

News7 Tamil to be run by an ‘editorial board’

NEW DELHI: Among the plethora of news channels in the country, one more news channel in Tamil is all set to take off, but with a difference – its seven-member editorial board will only have one person who is an employee of the channel.

All the other six editorial members – most of them not based in Tamil Nadu – will be working in an honorary capacity but will really be the decision-makers since the editorial managers are answerable to them. Furthermore, the policy is dictated by an editorial policy which has been drawn up by the editorial board and not by the owners.

Around Rs 60 crore is being invested by VV Group (with Alliance Broadcasting as the licence holders) who own the channel which will be the first mixed-language (English-Tamil) news channel from Tamil Nadu to reach out to the Tamil diaspora all over the world. Rajesh.

News7 Tamil editor and news head Rajesh Sundaram, who is the only paid member of the editorial board, told indiantelevision.com that the channel is expected to launch on 19 October but had a soft launch on 3 October after a rousing AR Rahman concert in Chennai on 2 October. He also added that the editorial board as a ‘firewall’ between the editorial managers and the management.

He said the channel will be a free-to-air channel to begin with and any decision to convert it into a pay channel would be taken after seeing the response. Initially, the channel will broadcast in Tamil but may ultimately go on to other languages. As per the list of channels approved by the ministry of information and broadcasting, it has a licence for both English and regional languages.

Referring to a question about marketing, he said the channel had already resorted to aggressive social media strategy and already garnered 20,000 followers on its Facebook page and several thousand followers on the Tamil and English Twitter handles. The website of the channel would be launched later this month.

The editorial focus of the channel would be ‘socially responsible journalism’ with an emphasis on social empowerment through information. The News7 Tamil editorial board will work independently within an institutionalised mechanism to firewall the channel’s editorial content from both external and internal influences.

The board will have complete authority in defining, adding to and amending editorial and news policies, feedback and complaint redressal systems.

The channel is not studio-based and will be shown from different parties and may even be telecast from different cities everyday, said Sundaram. The aim was to get unbiased news stories about Tamilians all over the world.

The board is currently led by a team of globally experienced professionals. The team comprises former Al Jazeera English head of newsgathering Nick Walshe and previously a reporter and editor with ITN of London and the BB), Deccan Chronicle executive editor R Bhagwan Singh and current news head Rajesh Sundaram (former Al Jazeera English India correspondent, TV Today Network input editor, founding editor of News Nation and South Africa’s Africa News Network 7).

Two other prominent personalities have agreed to join the board in the last 24 hours. Meena Kandasamy, a well-known poet, novelist and social activist based in London and a strong supporter of the Tamil cause is one of them. Priti Mohan from Chennai is the fifth member. She is a 30-year old lawyer and columnist with a keen interest in culture and music.

A total of seven members will be inducted into the editorial board, each serving for a period of one year extendable by up to one more year. The board will also appoint a chairperson who would also serve for a tenure of one year extendable by another year. The only permanent member of the board would be the news head/editor of the channel.

Sundaram said the challenge would be keeping news neutral and so the channel had three objectives: top quality news gathering, 100 per cent accuracy, and unbiased reporting. Audience surveys had been taken into account to see the kind of news that people liked to watch or the way they wanted to watch these.

The channel will be available on Sun Direct, Airtel DTH, Tata Sky, Videocon DTH, Arasu Cable, SCV  and all major distribution platforms across Tamil Nadu and nationally. The channel will be distributed in all major markets overseas soon after its launch in India.

And celebrating this were the 10,000 people, who had arrived in anticipation to catch a glimpse of stars at the eight annual Vijay Awards held at the Nehru Indoor stadium in Chennai.

Even before the arrival of the stars, the whistles and cheering commenced in full force. Capturing the entire crowd along with the 100 feet by 60 feet stage were 20 SD cameras both inside and outside the venue. This included still cameras, hand held cameras, jibs and one drone camera that caught the eye of the audience as it flew above the crowd.

The award show that went on for nearly seven and a half hours will be telecast in two parts (four hours each) on 20 July and 27 July. The entire execution was done by an in-house team of 100 with just the ground logistics and drone handling outsourced. R University Maduravoyil, Nandu Brand Lungies, Repco Home Finance and RRP Housing as co presenting sponsors, Sunland Refined Sunflower Oil, Step Stone  Promoters,  V Care hair growth Vitalizer, The Chennai Silks, Poomalai Housing, Kibbs Lungigal, Vijaya optical House, RPG Developers, Shakthi Masala, Ran India TMT Kambigal, Fairever Fairness Cream as associate sponsors. Vijay Awards is one of the most popular awards in the state of Tamil Nadu and people throng to witness it and to see the stars that come for the event. Our anchors are on par with any big celebrity host.” Last year the show was hosted by Gopi and actor R Madhavan.

The channel says that the stage, LED, lighting, choreography, costumes as well as AVs and scripts for the show were scaled up from the previous year. Indeed, several dance performances saw fire being shot from the stage for enhanced viewing. Dance performances saw dancers drop from above the stage for impact. The event only got better with the Kollywood stars arriving in the stadium, which saw an increase in the noise decibels. These included Vijay, AR Rahman, Kamal, Surya, Kushboo, Hansika, Nayantara, Ajith, Hassan and Karthik. Not to forget, the event was also attended for the second time in a row by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who was presented with the ‘entertainer of Indian cinema’ award by Rajinikanth’s wife Latha.

An intense marketing campaign was launched four weeks prior to the show that saw ads of 10,000 square centimeters being given in all leading dailies in English and Tamil newspapers such as Times of India, the Hindu, Ananda Vikatan and Kumudham. Radio spots were bought on Radio Mirchi across Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy. “The voting was exclusive on the digital medium and we had an audience attention of close to three crore over the four week period. Close to Rs one crore worth of advertising space and time had been mobilised for this massive promotion,” says Star Vijay senior VP for planning and marketing Balachandran. 25 hoardings and 10,000 posters were booked across the state as well showing the golden lady trophy of Vijay Awards. Digital and print will be once again used prior to the TV screening.

“Close to Rs 8.5 crore was spent on the entire event to make it a grand one,” says Sriram. Indeed, the spectacle of seeing eminent personalities on stage together standing and posing for a selfie was the moment of the night. Although the audience did not stay still for a second, the entire stadium erupted in a din when Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan entered the venue. While the soft spoken Vijay, who plays the macho actor on screen, shyly took away the award for the ‘favourite actor of the year’, SRK was at his usual best and grooved on stage to his own numbers while the audience cheered and clapped.

Some of the awards, out of the 40 given were, Kamal Hassan for ‘Best Actor,’ Nayantara for ‘Best as well as Favourite Actress,’ Aarambam for ‘Favourite Film,’ Vishwaroopam for ‘Best Film’ and AR Rahman for ‘Best Music Director.’
