Apple TV recruits Netflix engineer to enhance subscription services

MUMBAI: Apple has hired one of Netflix’s top engineers Ruslan Meshenberg. He joined the technical team working for the company’s newly launched TV-streaming and subscription services. Ruslan Meshenberg was responsible for building Netflix’s platform, especially creating a speedier and consistent service for audiences. He helped build out a smoother platform with higher latency.

According to reports, Michael Abbott, a former engineer with twitter who joined Apple last year is recruiting experienced engineers for Apple’s technical team. With Apple’s services expanding in recent times higher revenue generation, its decision to strengthen the technical department is no surprise.

Meshenberg joins Apple at the time when it is expanding its $4.99-a-month TV+ service, bringing in additional movies and originals. This comes out as a complex move that has tripped up other competitors in the streaming world.

Apple seems to have learned its lesson from Disney’s streaming platform Disney + who had a failed launch with subscribers not being able to login due to technical issues.

In the past couple of years, Apple has struggled to keep up with its technology rivals in terms of its performance and newly launched services like iCloud, Maps and its music-streaming business. For example, its subscription-based magazine service; News+ faced heavy criticism from analysts and reviewers for its default sync system.

However, Apple TV+ has not faced any major issues since its launch. Meshenberg has the expertise to help address the company’s technical challenges. While being at Netflix, he managed to run most of the infrastructure enabling to increase the streaming with more than one billion hours of weekly programming.

Moreover, Apple TV+ which started in November with few shows in its kitty is now prepping up to add a bundle of TV movies and shows to its bucket and tapping the international market. It will help Apple to compete against streaming giants including Netflix, HBO, Amazon and Disney.

This kind of talent acquisition is certainly helpful for strengthening the end-user experience, which is beneficial for consumers who are paying hefty amounts to enjoy a better quality product.

Amazon Fire TV stick active users soar to 40 million globally

Mumbai: As preferences of people shifting from cable TV to video-on-demand, Amazon Inc on Monday said its streaming device Fire TV stick has surpassed over 40 million active users globally.

Amazon Fire TV has successfully left behind the Roku TV, a US-based digital media player that allows customers to access internet streamed videos. Roku Inc had 32.3 million active users in November, said PTI report.

Apple TV, Chromecast and Fire TV have opened new avenues for the customers to stream internet content on television sets.

The Fire TV stick launched by Amazon in 2014, features content from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video among others and casts video directly to the television.

  • Strong Netflix growth underlines OTT growth potential in India

Strong Netflix growth underlines OTT growth potential in India

MUMBAI: Netflix India has just posted its earnings with the registrar of companies and reportedly, the video streaming giant has grown more than 700 per cent in the past 12 months.

While the company doesn’t share these details publicly, an ET Tech report, quoting Netflix’s annual filing, says that the Indian-arm of American video streaming giant recorded overall revenues of Rs 466.7 crore with a net profit of Rs 5.1 crore. In 2018, the company had a turnover of mere Rs 58 crore with Rs 20 lakh net profit.

No doubt, Netflix has upped its game in India by investing in expanding local content, a high-stakes marketing blitzkrieg and the launch of mobile-only plans starting at as low as Rs 199 per month, Netflix’s lowest subscription plan anywhere in the world. The strong growth posted by Reed Hastings-owned company, however, only underlines the tremendous growth potential for OTT platforms in the Indian market.

As per EY and FIICI 2019 report – ‘A Billion Screens of Opportunity,’ the OTT sector in India grew by a whopping 59 per cent in FY2019, growing from Rs 13.5 billion in 2018 to Rs 17 billion in 2019. The sector is estimated to reach Rs 24 billion by 2021. PwC, in its 2019 annual report – ‘Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2019-2023,’ estimated that the Indian OTT market will grow to Rs 11,976 crore by 2023, growing at a CAGR of 21.8 per cent. During that period, India is also slated to be the eight biggest OTT market overtaking South Korea.

OTT platform expansion in India is also supported by rising digital penetration and disposable income. In 2018, digital media grew 42 per cent to reach Rs 169 billion. As per the FICCI 2019 report, paid video subscribers grew from around 7 million in 2017 to around 12-15 million in 2018. The report further estimates that India could have 30-35 million paying OTT subscribers (and a further 350+ million subscribers accessing bundled OTT services from telcos) by 2021.

All these market studies only buttress one point, i.e. there is enough space for over 30 OTT players in India, both home-grown like Zee5 and AltBalaji, as well as global-giants like Netflix, Amazon and Hotstar, to co-exist and grow simultaneously. The same is also reflected in the ever-increasing subscription base of all these platforms.

While Netflix in India registered near 700 per cent growth, in terms of subscribers, it’s still dwarfed by Hotstar that has upwards of 300 million active monthly users in India. In comparison, both Netflix and Amazon, the two global-giants in video-on-demand industry, together have less than 30 million subscribers in India. Even the home-grown late-entrant to the party, ZEE5, digital-arm of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd's (ZEEL) launched in February 2018, increased its monthly active users from 21.7 million in the first quarter of 2018 to 76.4 million in the first quarter of 2019.

It’s pertinent to note that different OTT platforms in India are also adopting different expansion strategies. While global premium content was Netflix’s strength, Amazon expansion was helped by its clubbing of Amazon prime video with its online-retail service. Hotstar banked on sports telecast, whereas ZEE5 launched in 12 different languages, making it a strong player in the expanding regional market.

To be sure, though, the road-ahead for OTT platforms in India is not all that rosy. For one, no OTT platform has yet cracked the perfect monetisation model. While revenue and subscriber base are, indeed, increasing at a healthy pace, net profits are still meagre. Even Netflix, despite registering a 700 per cent growth rate, has posted a net profit of only Rs 5 crore. Barring Hotstar, that generates revenue through advertising during live sporting events, no other OTT player has successfully integrated advertising on their platforms.

For now, Netflix India is reaping dividends of being the early-mover in the market, as well as strong global premium content combined with local original shows and movie titles. Last fiscal, Netflix released six original films, five web-series and one docuseries in Hindi. The company has also signed an exclusive output deal with Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment. However, the OTT war for subscribers in India is only heating up. With the foray of global players like Apple TV+ and Disney+, as well as region-specific OTT platforms like Hoichoi and Simply South, the Indian OTT market may see further segmentation, forcing companies to constantly innovate, expand and experiment with a variety of new advertising models.

Disney CEO Bob Iger resigns from Apple’s board

MUMBAI: Disney CEO Bob Iger has stepped down from Apple’s board of directors the day Apple announced the price and release date for its streaming service. The resignation comes at a time when both the companies are upping the game in the streaming business.

Apple revealed on 10 September, the day Iger departed, the new details about Apple TV+, a $4.99-per-month service that will launch on 1 November. Around the same time, Disney is also launching its streaming video service Disney+ on 12 November. As both the companies are looking at creating original content, the two services will increasingly come into conflict in the future.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to have served on the Apple board for eight years, and I have the utmost respect for Tim Cook, his team at Apple, and for my fellow board members,” Iger said in a statement. “Apple is one of the world’s most admired companies, known for the quality and integrity of its products and its people, and I am forever grateful to have served as a member of the company’s board,” he added further.

The two companies were in cordial relations for a long time. Iger and late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs were personal friends. Jobs became a Disney director and major shareholder when Disney bought Pixar. After Job’s death in 2011, Iger joined Apple’s board.

“While we will greatly miss his contributions as a board member, we respect his decision and we have every expectation that our relationship with both Bob and Disney will continue far into the future,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple bags rights to novel ‘Shantaram’ for drama series

NEW DELHI: Apple has secured the rights of Gregory David Robert’s Mumbai-set novel `Shantaram’ and will be developing it as a drama series.

The ‘Shantaram’ series will be produced by Anonymous Content and Paramount TV, a PTI report from Los Angeles quoted Variety magazine as saying. The two companies had earlier this year won the rights to adapt the novel.

The 2003 novel, which has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide and sold six million copies, follows Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Oscar nominated scribe Eric Warren Singer will pen the series as well as be the executive producer. David Manson will also executive produce along with Nicole Clemens, Steve Golin and Andrea Barron.

The mob drama was previously being developed as a feature film, with Johnny Depp producing and Joel Edgerton as the lead. However, the project failed to take off.

Last week Apple had announced at its annual developers meet that the company was working on programmes that would have Apple TV powered by the innovative Dolby Atmos-supported audio for the 4K cinematic experience, taking the service to a new level once its tvOS12 was released for general use on the company’s devises for consumers.

The tvOS 12 (part of the iOS12 platform), the powerful operating system designed for enjoying entertainment on the big screen, takes the cinematic experience of Apple TV 4K to the next level with support for Dolby Atmos audio. The company had said there were convenient new features to easily access shows and movies and breathtaking aerial shots from space.

The Apple TV app is being positioned as a prime destination to find and watch TV shows, movies and more from more than 100 participating video apps in 10 countries.

Media reports have also suggested that Apple has already started toying with original content, with Carpool Karaoke as an example. It has also put more than $1 billion toward original programming, with its first efforts due to launch sometime in March 2019.

Apple TV will come powered by Dolby Atmos audio

NEW DELHI: Hold your breath guys. Apple TV now will come backed by the innovative Dolby Atmos-supported audio for the 4K cinematic experience, taking the service to a new level. Hang on, you’d have to wait till iOS12 is launched as this new service and many such others come with Apple’s proposed software upgrade, the beta version of which was released yesterday to the members of the company’s developer programme.

Previewing the tvOS 12, the powerful operating system designed for enjoying entertainment on the big screen, which takes the cinematic experience of Apple TV 4K to the next level with support for Dolby Atmos audio, the company said there were convenient new features to easily access shows and movies and breathtaking aerial shots from space.

Apple TV 4K has been gaining traction since its debut last fall, offering customers the largest collection of 4K HDR movies, including free 4K HDR upgrades to previously purchased movies in customers’ iTunes libraries. This fall, iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies anywhere, and these titles will also include Dolby Atmos audio for free.

With tvOS 12, the company claimed, Apple TV 4K will be the only streaming player both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified. New aerial screensavers on Apple TV were shot from space by NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

An international tech magazine, while commenting on the new announcements made by Apple yesterday and streamed live on its website, said: “Dolby Atmos object-based audio is coming to the Apple TV set-top box, bringing you overhead sounds as well as standard surround sound (provided you’ve got compatible Dolby Atmos speakers, of course). If you’ve got existing titles that support Dolby Atmos in your iTunes library, they’ll automatically be upgraded to support the new audio format.”

In a media statement the San Jose-based company said that Charter Communications, the second-largest cable operator in the US, will begin offering Apple TV 4K to its customers. “Later this year, customers in nearly 50 million households will have access to live channels and tens of thousands of on-demand programs via an all-new Spectrum TV app on their Apple TV 4K, iPhone and iPad, seamlessly integrated with Siri and the Apple TV App. In addition, as part of this collaboration, Charter will be offering iPhone and iPad to customers as they grow their mobile presence. Charter joins AT&T’s DirecTV Now in the US, CANAL+ in France and Salt in Switzerland, which have begun offering their customers Apple TV 4K with their services,” Apple Inc added.

Available on Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone, the Apple TV App is a prime destination to find and watch TV shows, movies and more from more than 100 participating video apps in 10 countries. Single sign-on for Apple TV and iOS will allow users to sign in once to get access to all the video apps available through their cable subscription. With tvOS 12, Apple further simplifies the authentication process with zero sign-on.

Apple TV simply detects the user’s broadband network and automatically signs them in to all the supported apps they receive through their subscription – no typing required. Zero sign-on begins with Charter later this year and will expand to other providers over time, the company said.

Additional tvOS 12 features for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV 4th generation make it easier for customers to access the shows and movies and the highlights are the following:

With iOS 12, users can securely AutoFill passwords from iPhone and iPad to Apple TV to easily sign in to Apple TV apps.

The Apple TV remote will be automatically added to Control Center on iPhone or iPad for Apple TV users, giving users quick access to Apple TV controls.

Home control systems like Control4, Crestron and Savant can be used to control Apple TV, including using Siri for voice search and control.

Media reports suggested that Apple has already started toying with original content, with Carpool Karaoke as an example. It has also put more than $1 billion toward original programming, with its first efforts due to launch sometime in March 2019.
