  • Word of mouth may help family entertainer

Mubarakan came as a full family entertainer after a long gap, a gap when fillers and mediocre films reigned. However, the film’s opening day collections were poor to put it plainly. To a certain extent, the promotion and the presentation of the film were not quite attractive.

The promos on theatrical as well as electronic media were really dull telling little about the film except that it was about Arjun Kapoor playing double roles with Anil Kapoor playing the uncle. Little was visible or came through about the other aspects, the talented other artistes or, mainly, the music of the film which is its asset.

The film’s projection proceeded more like a family enterprise of Kapoors which is not an added attraction. Father sons, uncle nephews coming together is neither novelty nor assures a draw.

The result was that, the film opened to 15 per cent footfalls on Friday, failed to pick up and ended its opening day with just a little over `50 million. However, the word of mouth was generally positive and the film was expected to gain some momentum over Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday improvement looked good in percentage as it was over 40 per cent but not really since the opening Friday was poor. The collections took a leap on Sunday with double the opening day figures to end its opening weekend with `226 million.

If the film fails to cash in on the positive word of mouth that it enjoys through rest of the week, it is headed to be a loser. Also, because, this is the only week it gets to establish itself as come next Friday, there is a new, bigger release in Shah Rukh Khan- Anushka Sharma starring, Jab Harry Met Sejal.

*RaagDesh is a film about a British era court martial of three Royal Army Indian soldiers who were captured by the Japanese, let off to join Subhash Chandra Bose’ Indian National Army and, later charged for the killing of some soldiers. This film is beyond comprehension.

Which moviegoer would want to pay anything between `100 to 2000 to watch this film when they did not care to watch films on Sardar Patel, B R Ambedkar, Veer Savarkar, Nehru made over the years when even the ticket prices were not so high! The only film on a political leader of whatever we call history which got some attention was Gandhi and that too its English version; the Hindi version simply failed.

The purpose of making this film about ‘unknown heroes’ of IAN defies logic and, why the RajyaSabha TV involved in this project is a question!

As for box office, the film had no commercial prospects to explore to collect a mere `5.5 million for its opening weekend.

*Indu Sarkar is another example of a film which should never have been made. The trade describes this as an enterprise of personal political aspirations. The film on the 1975 emergency bore no relevance a few months after it was over as films made on the subject like KissaaKurseeKa and Nasbandi proved to be capital loss.

This shows on the box office. The film has been rejected. The film collected `26 million for opening three days.

*Munna Michael fails. After a mediocre opening, the only day it picked up a little was on Sunday only going downhill thereafter to end its first week with a total of `308 million.

*Lipstick Under My Burkha managed `105 million in its first week maintaining low but steady collection through the week. The film is holding steady in its second week.

*JaggaJasoos added `73 million in its second week to take its two week tally to `504 million.

*Mom has collected `22 million in its third week taking its three week tally to `318 million.

  • Nivea TVC shows how to get rid of body odour

MUMBAI: FCB Interface recently rolled out an endearing new campaign for the launch of Nivea’s body deodorizers for women.

Featuring brand ambassador Anushka Sharma, the TVC comically highlights the deodorant’s promise of day-long odour control. Based on the insight that body odour leads to socially awkward situations, the commercial shows adorable little children holding their breath in a kindergarten classroom as their teacher suffers from body odour. Anushka, another kindergarten teacher, helps her out by offering her the Nivea Body Deodorizer.

The campaign is on air across leading television channels, supported by digital presence.

The film opens on a montage of adorable little children holding their breath whilst looking into the camera. With puffed up cheeks, wide eyes and endearing expressions on their faces, they appear to be in some sort of discomfort. We find out the reason soon enough. It is revealed that they’re in a kindergarten classroom, listening to their teacher tell a story. The kids are getting a whiff of her body odour as she gesticulates with raised arms. Anushka, another kindergarten teacher, notices this and helps her out by handing her the new Nivea Body Deodorizer that gives day-long odour control.

Robby Mathew, Chief Creative Officer, FCB Interface said, “Unlike adults, kids are quite transparent with their feelings. They don’t hesitate to express them, no matter who they are with. And this is the behavioral insight is what we latched on, to bring alive Nivea’s day-long odour control properties.”

Sachin Killawala, Category head – personal care, Nivea India said, “The new Body Deodorizer with Pro Vitamin B5 addresses the core category need of the women consumer to get day long odour control in just one use. While body odour is a well understood topic, most people do not realise that they have the problem as we tend to not discuss it or point it out. The TVC addresses this challenge by showing an intriguing situation in which the body odour issue is evident, without the social embarrassment associated with it.”

  • New films fail to attract viewers

*The poor run of films at the box office continues unabated save for an odd Dangal or a reasonable entertainer in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Not that any of these films can sustain a multiscreen cinema complex for more than a few weeks

The week saw two new releases, Phillauri and Anaarkali of Aarah, both female-oriented and also off the beaten track. Phillauri saw actor Anushka Sharma turn producer launching her production banner, Clean Slate Films. The sustainability of such a films is grossly limited and they draw footfalls, albeit in limited numbers, barely for a weekend.

A lot of actors are turning to production activities. But, Anushka, rather than take cue from her peers such as Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, and make a commercially viable film, chose an abstract theme, that of superstition and supernatural. The intent seems to be awards rather than rewards; probably for the protagonist, Anushka herself, as well as for some technical aspects like special effects. What good is an award if the people have not taken to your film?

What raises a question, besides the choice of subject, is that what was the logic of making a film almost entirely in Punjabi?

*Phillauri, counting on only Anushka Sharma to draw the crowds could not quite manage that. The film’s opening was not encouraging, with Punjab where the film’s lead actor, Diljit Dusanjh is a big star, faring little better. The film colledted Rs 13.9 crore for its opening weekend

*Anaarkali Of Aarah, though a local story of Bihar, and with rural background, found some appreciation as the film offered some great performances by its main actors, Swara Bhaskar, Sanjai Mishra and Pankaj Tripathi. However, these factors did not reflect on the film’s box office collections as the film remained in the range of a few lakh.

*Director duo Abbas Mustan, who gave many successful films with various actors in their career as directors, failed badly when it came to launching their family scion, Mustafa. A totally outdated story idea and patchy script were not the right recipe to launch an actor. The film managed to collect Rs 3.25 crore in its first week.

*Trapped collected Rs 2.1 crore in its first week.

*Aa Gaya Hero proves to be the swan song for Govinda’s career. Must hurt more because this also happened to be his home production. The film struggled to cross the one crore mark to end its first and last week with the figures of a little over one crore.

*Badrinath Ki Dulhania, made the most of poor crop of new releases. The film collected Rs 26.6 crore in its second week and is still holding steady in its third week. The film has taken its two week total to Rs 99.2 crore.

*Commando 2 added Rs 35 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 23.95 crore.

*The Ghazi Attack has added Rs 40 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week tally to Rs 19.3 crore.

  • Anushka is ‘Swachh Bharat’ ambassador

    Anushka is ‘Swachh Bharat’ ambassador

MUMBAI: Will highlight issue of open defecation centric on women, joins Amitabh Bachchan in PM Modi’s initiative. It takes a star with maximum reach and impact across India to be chosen as the face of a nationwide health and sanitation campaign

Anushka Sharma has been chosen to be the face of PM Modi’s initiative, the Swach Bharat Abhiyaan along with Bachchan for the same. She is the female ambassador of this massive country wide campaign, and has been picked for her popularity with youth across rural and urban India, particularly women.

The ministry has handpicked Anushka to sharpen and centre their communications towards Indian women, especially those who live in rural and semi rural India. A source adds, “ As per research done extensively by the government, men resist using and building toilets in rural and remote areas but women really want to use these. They are often unable to do so as the men don’t feel the need for it. Consequently, they end up defecating in open spaces like fields and farms which has many risks and dangers for women. Adverse effects of open defecation include spread of disease and safety of women and children. The safety of women is threaten because of going alone to the fields and other places solely because they are unable to use the toilets . Given that Anushka has wide appeal with young audiences and has played inspiring female characters onscreen, the government felt she would resonate with women, and was therefore chosen for the campaign.”

When Anushka heard about this aspect of open defecation, which goes beyond hygiene and health alone, she was appalled. The source explains, “When Anushka found out these details, she was shocked and decided right there and then that she must do this campaign. Centric towards achieving behavorial change in people, especially in motivating women who can take a step and drive men to use toilets, Anushka as a strong opinion influencer is the perfect fit to widen the message. The ministry felt that her influence will help with their outreach greatly and therefore, has chosen her as the face of this campaign. She has shot for two TVCs themed around an anthem like song for the campaign encouraging women to step up against open defecation and for construction of toilets with government initiative.. “

Having ruled the box office the previous year, and with a promising line up of quality films coming up in 2017, Anushka’s consistent performance and commitment to good cinema has made her a household favourite. That she will be endorsing Swachh Bharat campaign validates her huge popularity and she will focus on this campaign with gusto and absolute commitment. The two new TVCs will be worth watching out for.

  • Katrina & Anushka kick up a storm on Koffee couch

Katrina & Anushka kick up a storm on Koffee couch

MUMBAI: Move over boys because the girls have arrived! After being discussed, rated and analyzed in almost every episode of Koffee with Karan this season, Bollywood beauties Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif will finally grace the talk show together to brew a storm on the Koffee couch.

And, by storm, we mean a whirlwind of fun and madness that will leave the otherwise cool, calm and collected Karan Johar having a meltdown in the midst of the show, a first in Koffee history.

The next episode of Koffee with Karan season 5, which will air on Star World and Star World HD on Sunday at 9 pm, will see these actresses being candid like never before even as they gang up against Johar.

From admitting that the polls about her bothered her enough to stay away from appearing on the show to making some startlingly funny revelations when she discloses that Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor actually had a club called the ‘I hate Katrina Club’, Katrina is at her charming best. And even as Sharma denies that she is equally as bad as Kaif, she causes Johar to have a meltdown as she twists and over analyzes his question about whether the actresses have ever thought about choosing stability over passion in a relationship.

The comfort and rapport of the two actresses is evident as they rag Kapoor, who is back in his third appearance this season, this timefor the ‘Kiss With Arjun’ session. From Sharma jokingly calling him a bigger continuity than the Koffee couch to Kaif donating the Koffee hamper to him as charity, Kapoor is left speechless and in splits between the two girls.
