MUMBAI: International sales agent Fortissimo Films has acquired the international distribution rights of the Anurag Kashyap film, Michael.

The film is a character driven psychological thriller set in the rainy and noisy backdrop of Kolkata.

Said Chris Paton of Fortissimo, “Ribhu is just one of the exciting new generation of filmmakers coming out of India. We’re especially delighted to be working alongside Anurag Kashyap and his team as well as Viacom18 Motion Pictures. They have an exciting vision of new cinema and we share their passion for discovering upcoming talent.”

Presented by Tipping Point Films (a division of Viacom18 Motion Pictures), the film has been directed by Ribhu Das Gupta.

The psychological thriller starring Naseeruddin Shah will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in Contemporary World Cinema on 15 September.

MUMBAI: Anurag Kashyap’s forthcoming film Michael will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.

Directed by debutant director Ribhu Dasgupta and set in Kolkata, the film is a character-driven psychological thriller that captures a father-son relationship.

While Naseeruddin Shah plays the lead in the film, it also features Bengali actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Rudranil Ghosh in pivotal roles. Besides, the hubbub of North Kolkata plays an important character in his narrative.

“I have portrayed North Kolkata because I love that part of the city as it maintains the decadence of the heritage of Kolkata. When you will see the film, you will know why I chose that part of the city in particular,” avers Dasgupta.

The festival will also see the world premiere of TOM Pictures’ Man on Ground. The film, directed by South Africa-based Nigerian filmmaker Akin Omotoso, stars Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Fabian Lojede, Manidsa Bardill and Thisiwe Ziqubu.

Man on Ground will be screened for three days on 12, 13 and 17 September.

The Toronto International Film Festival will be held from 8 to 18 September.

Middle East countries ban Anurag Kashyap film

MUMBAI: Citing that the film is vulgar in nature, the Dubai government, along with other countries in the Middle East, has banned Anurag Kashyap‘s That Girl In Yellow Boots (TGIYB) from exhibition.

Confirming the same Kashyap said, “When TGIYB was doing the round of festivals last year, we were not allowed to screen it for the festival panel at Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) because of the subject matter.”

The film revolves around a young girl Ruth who comes to the city in search of her father, but is soon faced with moralistic questions when she takes up a job as a masseuse to make ends meet.

“TGIYB is for a mature audience. I don‘t know who in the middle-east decides whether the viewers are mature enough to watch the film or not, but I guess it‘s a moralistic stand,” adds Kashyap.

Interestingly, the Censor Board of Film Certification gave an ‘A‘ certificate to the film and passed it without any hassle.

The film releases worldwide on 2 September.

MUMBAI: Indie Pix has been awarded the US distribution rights of Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl In Yellow Boots.

Indie Pix will release the film with 30 prints in the US on 2 September, the day the film releases globally.

Till now, the film could not find a release window in the US because Kashyap was not able to find a proper distributor.

“Indian distributors think that films that do not have a Bollywood star are not fit for an international release. The point is that they only chase the NRI audience and are not willing to explore other markets. They have not even thought of the audience from the other countries,” avers Kashyap.

In India, the film will be distributed by the National Film Development Corporation of India.

PVR to release five films from the slate of IFFA

MUMBAI: PVR Cinemas has signed an MOU with International Film Festival Ahmedabad (IFFA) to release five films from among those that will be showcased at the festival. The selected ones will get a limited release under PVR‘s new label: Director‘s Cut and Director‘s Rare.

Said IFFA founder and festival director Shiladitya Bora, “Every filmmaker wants to show his/her film in theaters to the public but normally independent films are turned down by distributors. We understand this very well and we want IFFA to bridge that gap by pioneering such an initiative.”

Initially, films in PVR Director‘s Cut will be screened in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, after which the selected five films will travel to other PVR Cinemas across major metropolitan cities under a new brand of PVR Director‘s Rare.

PVR Ltd VP of films & marketing Shalu Sabharwal and PVR Cinemas programming head Prakhar Joshi will be instrumental in selecting the films.

Said PVR Limited COO Gautam Dutta, “We brought a new experience for the audiences when we launched our first multiplex and today we want to take it to a step forward by being the first ones to release a series of special non-mainstream niche films that are director‘s signature works under our new label of Director‘s Cut & Director‘s Rare which otherwise would never get a release.”

Popular fusion band Indian Ocean will perform on the opening day of the 3rd edition of the IFFA, while the closing day will see the Asian premiere of Anurag Kashyap‘s That Girl in Yellow Boots.

The festival begins on 24 and closes on 28 of August.
