    Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur to premiere at Cannes

    MUMBAI: Anurag Kashyap’s latest directorial project Gangs of Wasseypur will premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

    Touted as a family drama, spread across three generations and six decades, the film is a tale of revenge, crime and love, set against the backdrop of Wasseypur, a small town near Dhanbad. The film has been reported to be inspired from the story of Jharkhand politician Suryadev Singh, Binod Singh, Sakeldeo Singh, and Birendra Pratap Singh, who was convicted of murder.

    Directors Fortnight is a non-competitive section at the Cannes Film Festival. Since its inception, it has showcased the first films of Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Nagisa Oshima, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Ken Loach among others.

    Indo-France co-production Chhatrak (Mushrooms), directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara, was part of the official lineup of Cannes Directors Fortnight last year.

    Michael to kick off London Asia Film Fest

    MUMBAI: Ribhu Dasgupta’s Michael will kick off the 14th London Asian Film Festival due from 16 to 24 March.

    “This debut work takes its place in India’s emerging independent cinema which attempts to portray its current social predicament head on, no holds barred. The film, produced by Anurag Kashyap and starring Naseeruddin Shah, follows the lives of a chain of people as they merge and get lost in Kolkata‘s landscape,” reads the official website of the festival.

    Other films that would also be screened alongside are Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna, Salim Ahamed’s Adaminte Makan Abu, Italo Spinell’s Gangor, Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol and Rubaiyat Hossain’s Meherjaan.

    Taking an award for his work on disability in Indian cinema will be Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His films Black and Guzaarish will also be screened at the festival.

    Abhishek Bachchan will open the London Asian Film Festival along with writer and British comedian Meera Sayal.

    MUMBAI: Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Percept Pictures are jointly producing Sunburn‘ into ‘Sunburn – The Movie, the path breaking extension of India‘s premier music event Sunburn.

    To be produced and creatively mentored by Phantom Films and Anurag Kashyap, Sunburn – The Movie is a film shot entirely at the festival – realtime!

    While Sunburn‘s music has always been the festival‘s mainstay, the film‘s music is all set to raise the bar as well, with the super talented Amit Trivedi set to take the Sunburn experience several notches higher, an official statement said.

    Commenting on the new initiative, Percept Limited & Inceptor of Sunburn joint managing director Shailendra Singh said, “Sunburn is a global dance music festival – its fans go beyond the ones who have attended the festival. We were live in over 100 countries this year with 1,00,000 attendees. Fans have relished the experience and we thought of enhancing the same through cinema. With like minded partners Viacom 18 and Phantom we want take this to the next level. We have produced the first GLOCAL brand out of India – produced locally sold globally.”

    Added Viacom18 Motion Pictures‘ COO Vikram Malhotra, “Sunburn is by far the biggest cult event in the country. The way this brand has grown over the last 4 years is extraordinary.     Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 coming on 29 June

    MUMBAI: Anurag Kashyap’s film Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 will release on 29 June.

    A film about the coal mafia in Dhanbad (Jharkhand), has been made in two parts, each of two hours and forty minutes in length.

    Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Manoj Bajpai and Richa Chadda.

    The second part of the film will release by the end of the year.

    Ranveer Singh in Magadheera remake

    MUMBAI: After months of keeping the industry in suspense, producers Vikas Bahl and Anurag Kashyap have signed Ranveer Singh to play the lead role in the Hindi remake of the 2009 Telugu hit Magadheera.

    With his signing, Singh has edged out Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor, the names of whom that were constantly doing the rounds.

    Confirming the same, Bahl said, “Magadheera is a passion project for us, and we are excited to have the rights to re-create this magical piece of work. Ranveer is the best thing that could have happened to it.
     
    He has all the ingredients to be a passionate lover, a warrior and an entertainer, all at the same time. All the fans of Magadheera are coming together to recreate its magic with the support of Allu Arvind, the producer of the original film.”

    Magadheera is a historic love story. Set against the backdrop of 17th century India, the film is said to have an estimated budget of Rs 50 crore.

    Preparing for the role, Singh will undergo intense physical training. He will also interact with Ram Charan, who played the lead in the original, to get some valueable inputs.

    The Lunchbox to participate in Cinemart at Rotterdam fest

    MUMBAI: Anurag Kashyap Productions and Cine Mosaic’s film, The Lunchbox, will participate in Cinemart, the co-production market at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

    Helmed by Ritesh Batra, the film is one of the 35 projects selected for Cinemart. The project, that was selected for NFDC Screenwriter’s Lab, recently participated at workshops in Venice and Goa.

    The prizes given to distinguished CineMart projects are Eurimages Co-Production Development Award (one prize of € 30,000) and Arte France Cinéma Award (one prize of € 10,000).

    The 29th edition of Cinemart will take place from 29 January to 1 February.

    Two Indian films win laurels at Dubai fest

    MUMBAI: Two Indian films Rohit Pandey-directed short film Mehfuz and Anand Patwardhan‘s documentary Jai Bhim Comrade have made the country proud by being honoured at the recently concluded 8th Dubai International Film Festival.

    While the Anurag Kahsyap film has won the second prize in Muhr AsiaAfrica shorts section, while Parwardhan‘s film got a special mention in the Muhr AsiaAfrica Documentary section.

    Other awards are as follows:

    The Susan Youssef-directed film Habibi won the best film award in the Muhr Arab Feature, Al Juma Al Akheira (The Last Friday) of the UAE won the Special Jury Prize in the Muhr Arab Feature category.

    While Ali Suliman won the best actor award for Al Juma Al Akheira, Maisa Abd Elhadi won the award for the best actress in the Muhr Arab Feature category.
    The first prize in the Muhr Arab Documentary was bagged by the Lebanon-UAE co-production Sector Zero, ICI, On Noie Les Algerins – 17 Octobre 1961 (Here We Drown Algerians – October 17th, 1961) won the special jury prize in the same category.

    France‘s Sur La Route Du Paradis (The Road To Paradise) won the first prize in the Muhr Arab Short category, another film from the country Bruleurs (Burners) won a special mention. Iraq‘s Ard Al Abtal (Land Of The Heroes) won the second prize in the category.

    The awards were announced at the conclusion function on Wednesday.

    Sunil Bohra to release Pain’s Chittagong

    MUMBAI: Producer-director Bedabrata Pain is a relieved man after filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and his distributor friend Sunil Bohra coming forward to bail out the filmmaker and undertaking to be a presenters of his film Chittagong with Sunil Bohra alone distributing the film as well.


    Confirming the same Bohra said, “Anurag is a good friend. He liked the film a lot and told me about it. We are jointly presenting the film and we will try and ensure that the film has a wide release like any other commercial film.”


    The film, starring Manoj Bajpai, is set against the backdrop of a little known saga in 1930s British-occupied India, where a group of schoolboys and young women, led by a schoolteacher, Masterda Surjya Sen dared to take on the British Empire.


    With the release, Pain‘s Chittagong stands to be the second film on the Chittagong uprising after Ashutosh Gowariker‘s film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.

    UTV, Anurag Kashyap to co-produce Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana

    MUMBAI: UTV Spotboy and Anurag Kashyap have again teamed up to produce Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (LSTCK).

    LSTCK, directed by Sameer Sharma, is a wholesome family entertainer that celebrates the two Indian obsessions- food and family.

    The film is the story of a Punjabi joint family with inherent humour, drama, confusion and emotion over the secret recipe for a famous chicken curry called ‘Chicken Khurana‘.

    LSTCK stars Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi (who has acted in Anurag‘s Gangs of Wasseypur) in the lead roles.

    UTV Spotboy and Anurag Kashyap had earlier collaborated on Dev.D and Udaan.

    IFFA reschedules to start on 6 October

    MUMBAI: The third edition of the International Film Festival Ahmedabad (IFFA) will now go underway on 6 October, and not on 25 August, as scheduled earlier.

    Accordingly, Ketan Mehta‘a Rang Rasiya that was to be the opening film of the festival has been replaced by Nagesh Kukunoor‘s latest film Mod.

    Mod, based on a Taiwanese film Keeping Watch, is a suspense drama that stars Ayesha Takia opposite Rannvijay Singh. The director was highly touched by the Taiwanese film and instantly decided to remake it for the Indian audiences by buying its rights.

    Anurag Kashyap‘s That Girl in Yellow Boots will be the closing film of the Festival. Written by Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin, the film stars Kalki Koechlin as Ruth along with Naseeruddin Shah, Prashant Prakash, Gulshan Devaiya, Shivkumar Subramaniam, Divya Jagdale, Kumud Mishra and Kartik Krishnan.

    Five films from the line-up of the festival will get a limited release under PVR‘s new label, Director‘s Cut & Director‘s Rare.
