Actor Anupam Kher honoured with Kalidas Samman 2012

NEW DELHI: Veteran actor Anupam Kher has been honoured with the Kalidas Samman 2012 for his contribution to theatre.

Kalidas Samman is a prestigious arts award presented annually by the government of Madhya Pradesh. It was first awarded in 1980 and was initially conferred every alternate year in the fields of classical music, classical dance, theatre and plastic arts. From 1986-87 onwards, the awards were presented in all four fields every year.

Kher said he was delighted as this award adds yet another feather in his cap after completion of his Hollywood venture, Silver Linings playbook this year. He said film and theatre are two most important platforms for any act and both have their equal contribution in shaping the persona of an actor.

He added, "Being awarded the highest form of appreciation in theatre just reaffirms my faith in theatre, while empowering me with the right attitude to perform on an international level such asc alongside world famous professionals in the same field."

Anupam Kher’s Hollywood film gets People’s Choice Award

MUMBAI: Anupam Kher‘s well-applauded Hollywood film David Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook has won the prestigious ‘People‘s Choice‘ award at the Toronto Film Festival.
Kher‘s role in Silver Linings Playbook is the most substantial role by an Indian actor in a Hollywood film. Taking things cool, Kher says, “I‘m not saying anything about my role. I neither want to raise expectations of my audience back home nor play down my part. I know what it is. And I am very happy.”
“The profile of my part is what matters. I could be in Woody Allen‘s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger or I could be in Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. I enjoyed doing both. I‘ve done more than 450 films so far. I was only 26 when I played a 67-year old man in Saaraansh. From then on, I have tried to break the mould in Indian films. No one has helped me get where I am. I did it on my own, fearlessly.”

  • Housefull to release in April 2014

Housefull to release in April 2014

MUMBAI: Moving ahead of Judwaa 2 has proven to be beneficial in ways more than one for both Sajid Nadiadwala and Sajid Khan. Since earlier Sajid Khan was supposed to be in charge of both the films, they were meant to be spaced out. However, with a new director coming on board for Judwaa 2, Sajid Khan would be beginning work on Housefull 3, hence releasing it in April 2014.

“This also means that the trend of one Housefull flick releasing every two years in the month of April would be maintained”, says our well placed source, “If Sajid Khan would have started work on Judwaa, he would have been forced to delay Housefull 3 even further. He is anyways working on Himmatwala currently and plans to release it next year. After that, if he would have done Judwaa 2, the wait would have prolonged for Housefull 3. However, now after Himmatwala, he can solely concentrate on Housefull 3.”

Since Housefull is the flagship franchise of Nadiadwala, he too is in a happy state since the next instalment would now release much earlier.

“Yet again, the film would clash with IPL though”, adds a trade source, “In a way IPL is beneficial instead of being jinxed for the Housefull series. This has been proven in the first two films in the franchise and now yet again both Sajids want to take IPL heads-on.”

With the film definitely on the cards, the myth around all not well between them has also been dispelled.

“They can‘t be expected to work with each other in practically every film. If Sajid Khan is currently doing Himmatwala, Sajid Nadiadwala too has directors like Imtiaz Ali and Kabir Khan lined up”, says a common friend, “Both of them have maintained that they are friends first. They will keep making movies together but only if they both are passionate about the subject.”

Akshay Kumar is the only superstar who has one release in every three month or so. This year he already made his mark with two 100 cr blockbusters “Housefull 2” and “Rowdy Rathore”. He will have two more major release in August and October in “Joker‘ and “Oh My God!”.

Akshay Kumar has also some interesting releases lined up for next year and one of his most awaited film where he will be seen in rather different type of character is “Special Chabbis”. This film is being directed by Neeraj Pandey who directed the commercially successful and critically acclaimed “A Wesnesday”. The film is based on a real life heist and also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Kaajal Aggrawal.

But the big news is that the makers have locked the release date of the film. Viacom 18 and Wide Frame will be releasing the film on 8th Februray 2013. This means Akshay planning to start 2013 with the bang!

Anupam Kher, Jayaprada to produce Hindi version of Pranayam

MUMBAI: Anupam Kher and Jaya Prada will produce the Hindi version of Pranayam.

The film has director Blessy, more of a serious filmmaker, making a mark with the Mohanlal-Jaya Prada-Anupam Kher starrer that not only won critical acclaim for the actors but to Blessy as well.

Blessy, who would be reportedly wielding the megaphone for this project also, is keen to rope in Amitabh Bachchan to portray the role played by Mohanlal in the original.

Though the talk of the remake has been going on for some time now, it couldn’t gather steam as Jaya Prada was busy with the UP elections.

Pranayam is a portrayal of the great emotion ‘love‘ which binds man to one another through life‘s journey. It is a narration of the different dimensions of love capturing the joys and pain, loss and gain, the present and the past and so much more in between.

  • Bittoo Boss lacks in content and imagination

Bittoo Boss lacks in content and imagination

MUMBAI: Bittoo Boss is an attempt at making one of those cute movies that work once in a while. It is about an innocent and hard working but confident boy and a rich, with-it girl.

Pulkit Samrat is a videographer covering weddings. He has made a reputation for having a special knack for capturing the spirit and happiness around wedding events. So much so that muhurat would be overlooked if he was late to arrive at the venue.

Producers: Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak.
    Director: Supavitra Babul.
    Pulkit Samrat, Amita Pathak.

But Pulkit Samrat is a hero right out of 1960s films, a simpleton and clean of heart. At one such wedding he sees Amita Pathak and is besotted by her.

Soon, he is chasing her instead of chasing work. But the taming of the shrew is not easy; she will have none of his charming ways until, finally, she sees a video shot by him and as a result reciprocates his love! Coming from a rich, high society family, however, she wants him to do something more worthy and attain monetary success. With intent to help him out, she uses her own clout at a local TV channel to get him work but only manages to get him humiliated.

Samrat, now determined to make it big, agrees to shoot porn films of honeymoon couples on the sly but the good soul that he is, he ends up doing something good for his targeted victims. Like in old fashioned films, in a couple of short sequences at the end, not only does the hero paint those who Amita Pathak called high society black but he also ends up with a lucrative contract and a fat cheque from Mohan Kapoor, whose daughter‘s honour he had protected.

Bittoo Boss is a low budget film but that does not justify its low in content and imagination story and treatment. Using a lot of local Punjabi flavour and accent, its standard of narration is cheap.

The idea of comedy in the film is half a dozen girls vying with each other to tell the hero, ‘meri kab lega!‘ Musically ‘Kaun kenda ..‘ is a hummable number. Photography is passable. Editing is slack. Dialogue is routine. In performance, Pukit Samrat is impressive this being his first film. Amita Pathak is not heroine material. Rest are okay.

Bittoo Boss is not the cute movie it thinks it is and will find it tough to sustain come day two after release.

Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein has limited appeal

    Producers: Balasaheb Bhapkar, Shashank Bhapkar.
    Director: Pramod Joshi.
Stars: Anupam Kher, Sachin Khedeekar, Mrinalini Kulkarni, Atul Parchure, Anajan Shrivastav, Suresh Menon, Vijay Parkar, Rajesh Vivek.

Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein is a film on a contemporary businessman‘s life whose quest for success is never ending. So much so that he has no sense of priorities and neglects his family, his neighbours, and all social contact. There comes a time when his family revolts and he is left to fight the ghosts of his past acts.

The film is based on the Hollywood film Groundhog Day.

Sachin Khedekar is an IT professional who, having seen success, has got addicted to it and keeps on setting higher targets for him with every new success. For him the success is measured only in terms of the billions he can make. In the process, he has ignored his wife and a teenage daughter completely. His neighbours and their activities hardly exist for him except as a nuisance with their laughter club and cricket playing kids.

Giving priority to his business meet over his daughter‘s arangetram is the last straw as his wife and daughter walk out on him leaving him alone for the weekend; Sachin Khedekar starts the weekend with his friend, Atul Parchure, visiting bars but come night, he finds himself in a trap where every morning he wakes up to see the same newspaper and same sequence of events repeating while he is anxious to see Monday when he will sign a new Rs 1 billion deal. As his ordeal continues, Khedekar sets out to find a solution and meets Anupam Kher. With Anupam Kher, Khedekar learns to find happiness in life through various small things that he overlooked all the time.

The story is more personal and hence of limited appeal. Direction as well as the ambience is more Marathi-oriented since the film has also been made in Marathi. Performance wise, Sachin Khedekar is good while Anupam Kher excels.

Bollywood by Gulzar finds special place in Delhi’s literary festival

NEW DELHI: Delhi’s own literary festival Spring Fever 2012 this year attracted special participation from Bollywood.

The third annual literature festival of Penguin Books concluded on a high note in the evening with the legendary veteran poet and lyricist Gulzar reading out his best poems from his recently launched book ‘Neglected Poems‘.

“Epics may seem distant from our modern-day lives, but that is not right. After Pawan wrote this episode from the Mahabharat in relevance with people`s lives today, I realised it should reach out to more people,” he said.

“Translations are very important these days, since an average person can only know two to three languages. We have so many languages in India and poems are being written in as many of them. Also, a translator should be well-versed in both languages, the original and the one in which he is translating,” he added.

Penguin Spring Fever 2012 also saw the participation of authors like Anupam Kher and Raghav Bhal.

The topics covered during the ten day festival varied from ‘Sex and romance outside the bedroom‘ to the ‘New Indian Consumer‘.

A unique Bollywood quiz was held with a special round on superstar Rajnikanth, apart from performances by bands like Faridkot, Vedas and Qawwali.
