  • NDTV Fortis Cancerthon raises funds for kids with Cancer

NDTV Fortis Cancerthon raises funds for kids with Cancer

MUMBAI: It is a rare person in this world who has not battled cancer – some of us directly, and almost all of us indirectly, through the pain of a loved one.

American scientist and physician Siddhartha Mukherjee calls it The Emperor of all Maladies. ”Cancer, we now know, is a disease caused by the uncontrolled growth of a single cell… Cell division allows us as organisms to grow, to adapt, to recover, to repair — to live. And distorted and unleashed, it allows cancer cells to grow, to nourish, to adapt, to recover, and to repair — to live at the cost of our living.”

India is combating cancer with new cures, superior treatments, networked care giving and financial aid. Yet, every year 10 lakh new cases are diagnosed in India. About five lakh succumb to the disease annually. While breakthrough advances are being made in diagnosis and treatment, cancer is galloping ahead. What’s worse, cancer among children and young adults has taken on severe proportions. They comprise 15% of India’s cancer patients. No less than 50,000 children are detected with cancer every year. They are at the core of our cause.

The silver lining in the story is the immense support and care structure that backs up mainstream treatment. Raising awareness plays a large role. This is where NDTV and Fortis have stepped in to create a nationwide cancer awareness and fundraising campaign — Health4U Cancerthon.

The campaign culminated in an 8-hour LIVE fundraiser CANCERTHON rolled from Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai. It brought together the entire nation to spread awareness and donate generously to the cause. The campaign successfully raised close to 3 crores for cancer patients.

Packed with stories of cancer survivors, medics talking about breakthrough treatment and detection and NGOs elaborating on the support required by patients and caregivers, it was a first-of-a-kind live awareness campaign and fundraiser.

Sharing their personal stories and professional expertise during the eight-hour event, anchored by Vikram Chandra, were film and television personalities, well-known singers, eminent doctors and cancer survivors. Celebrities included Salman Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Kajol, Arjun Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Anu Malik, Pankaj Udhas, Mohit Chauhan, Kailash Kher, Yuvraj Singh, Minissha Lamba, Diana Hayden, Ali Fazal, Priya Dutricha Chadda, Neeraj Shridhar, RJ Sidhu, Ehsaan Noorani, Emraan Hashmi, Ram Naik, NDTV’s Co-Chairperson Prannoy Roy along with Fortis Executive Chairman Malvinder Singh and Executive Vice-Chairman Shivinder Singh.

Indian actor, producer and philanthropist Salman Khan said, “Sometimes children come to us in the last stage of cancer and you find them still so full of life. They are not burdened with despair.”  Talking about the strength with which these children fight the disease he says, “These children are the real heroes they manage to fight and kick cancer out of their bodies. ‘’

‘‘Cancer is not scary as everybody makes it out to be and it’s truly, truly an awareness that we need to spread,  that listen, it can be controlled, you know it can be made better and the faster you get to it, faster you are able to eradicate it the problem. It’s as a simple as that”, said Kajol.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh who interacted with cancer survivors in Panchkula, Haryana, as part of this campaign said, “As a cancer survivor, it was very inspiring to meet all these courageous people who are battling cancer. On my own journey of beating cancer, I learnt an important lesson – cancer is detectable and curable. 90% of cancers are curable if detected in stage one. To ensure that no one has to fight cancer alone, my NGO YouWeCan is helping create consciousness on cancer prevention, early detection and the fight against stigma. It is an initiative which I am proud of and involved in 24×7. With your support and love we all will make it happen.’’

Actor Shahid Kapoor on the occasion said, “Every woman must go regularly for breast cancer screenings and the men should support them and make them comfortable so that they feel comfortable and don’t hesitate for going for the tests.”

Speaking on the occasion Vikram Chandra, Group CEO, NDTV said, “Why do over ninety thousand children die annually from childhood cancers and how can this be stopped? I am very pleased that today’s Cancerthon, with generous contribution of their time by experts, has given us a better understanding of the research and awareness being done towards finding safer treatments and cures for this disease. In partnership with Fortis Healthcare, the Cancer Society and CanKids we will give hope to so many more children and end their suffering.”

Malvinder Mohan Singh, Executive Chairman Shivinder Mohan Singh, Executive Vice Chairman Fortis Healthcare in a joint statement, added “Clearly the incidence of cancers has increased over the last many years. India contributes to 7.5% of cancer cases globally and 8 % of global cancer deaths happen in India. Due to under- diagnosis and under- detection, the actual scale of the problem is at least twice or thrice the reported numbers With the current lifestyles that people are leading, it becomes all the more important for us to focus on doing what’s right from a prevention perspective so that we minimize the risk of cancer. Childhood cancers are immensely curable, if detected in time. Whilst we make the best of treatment available to them, raising funds for those who can’t afford the treatment has been one of the key objectives of this campaign.”

The funds raised through this initiative will be utilised by the campaign’s Knowledge and Implementation Partner, The Indian Cancer Society, towards pediatric cancer treatments.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Simardeep Singh Arora, CIPLA, Arun Bharat Ram, Mohit Chauhan and HDFC generously donated for cancer patients.

Among others present at the event were Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Biocon; Arun Bharat Ram, SRF; Yk Hameid, Cipla; Satish Reddy, Dr Reddy’s Labs; Rajashree Birla; Gopal Vittal, Bharti-Airtel; Dr SH Advani; Dr P Jagannath; Dr Vinod Raina; Dr Naveen Dang; Dr VK Paul; Dr Priya Ranachandran; Dr Mohamned Rela; Dr Sharat Damodar; Dr Samir Parikh; Dr Rajiv Sarin; Dr Mamen Chandy; Dr GPI Singh; Dr Preet K Dhillon; Dr P Kurkure and Dr Carl June.

  • Sony’s weekday bet with ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’

Sony’s weekday bet with ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television (SET) seems to be focusing strongly on its strength, which is in the non-fiction space. After a victorious innings of four entertaining seasons that packaged non-stop entertainment, the channel is back with Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega with its fifth edition. Starting from 12 May, the channel is betting big by airing the show for five days a week at 9pm.

With its maverick judges, Anu Malik and Farah Khan spicing up this season, the show will also have the gorgeous Mona Singh hosting the show with her impeccable style and grace. Joining Mona will be her hilarious co-host, Krushna Abhishek, who with his funny antics will ratchet up the humour quotient and take the madness to a whole new level.

Produced by Wizcraft Entertainment, it will see acts ranging from heart-stopping bike gymnastics to an international illusion act straight from France. Handpicked contestants from all over the country will display their extraordinary skills and talents at the auditions, and the best among them voted by the audience and the judges, will win Rs 11,111 on the spot in cash. Additionally, the best performer of each week will receive a cash prize of Rs 1, 00,000.

Speaking about the launch, Sony SVP and head marketing Gaurav Seth explains: “Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega is a show that celebrates extraordinary talents in ordinary people and the uniqueness and the sheer variety of entertainment in India. This season has lots more entertainment and breathtaking acts that will leave the viewers amazed. We are thrilled to yet again have the unbeatable team of Anu Malik and Farah Khan who will be judging the show for its fifth year. We are offering a differentiated and entertaining option in primetime viewing and we hope our viewers enjoy watching it.”

“Wizcraft is proud to be back with the fifth season of Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, a show that showcases unique entertainers where performers get a chance to win some money at every step unlike other shows where only one wins in the finale. Along with the baap of entertainers Anu Malik and Farah Khan, adding a freshness to show will be the new host Krushna along with Mona, whose chemistry is infectious. We are sure this season of Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega will take the entertainment quotient to another level”, opines Wizcraft International Entertainment creative head Kailash Gandhi.

The show is going to face hard hitting competition with shows like Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus, Beintehaa on Colors, Chidiya Ghar on Sab, Nadaan Parinde on Life OK and Kumkum Bhagya on Zee TV.

  • Sony brings back ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’

Sony brings back ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’

MUMBAI: For four fun-filled seasons, the show continued to dish out non-stop entertainment apart from serving as a platform for ordinary Indians with extraordinary talent.

Two years after it went off air, Sony Entertainment is bringing back its talent hunt, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega by popular demand. Produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment, the show is based on American reality series, 30 seconds to Fame, where contestants continue to strut their stuff for a minute without the judges interrupting them.

In its fifth season, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega will be aired from 9pm to 10 pm Monday to Friday, replacing Jee Le Zara and Nandini in the bargain from 12 May. It is slated to run for two months.

This time, like all the previous seasons, will be judged by Farah Khan and Anu Malik while Mona Singh and Krushna Abhishek will be the hosts. Two promos of the show have already hit the television screens. Auditions are on since January, taking audiences through thrills and chills even as contestants show off their special skills in an emotionally charged environment.

With so many talent shows crowding the small screen, how will the new season net eyeballs?

“The format of the show is going to remain the same. But we are making this season more interesting for the viewers. I think the quality of talent that you are going to see, the kind of interaction you are going to see with the judges and the talent, the attitude and the approach of the judges to the talent… will be different,” says Wizcraft International Entertainment director Sabbas Joseph. “I think as the standards across India have grown, you will see those standards getting reflected in the show and especially the quality of entertainment. Our aim is to make this season more exciting and sharper.”

While Sony is the only channel which has experimented with all genres, it continues to struggle at number six position of TAM TV ratings. Months ago when NP Singh was elevated to the position of CEO from COO, he made a promise to make changes in the channel’s programming and work on bringing the channel back to its now lost top position.

Accordingly, Singh changed focus from fiction to tried and tested non-fiction properties to buoy Sony’s image. A case in point is Boogie Woogie, which was dragged out of its closet and re-launched and which did pretty well for itself and the channel.

However, a highly placed media planner expressed the view that Sony should tag itself as a ‘non-reality’ based channel. “I think its fiction shows need some rest. The fifth season is going to air at a time when other channels are buzzing with fiction properties. Though, the plan to air a daily reality show is okay, but how are you going to sell it to viewers, who have already booked their tickets for dramas. To get viewers on-board, firstly, they have to produce good content and secondly, promote that good content in a strong way.”

Whether or not Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega will ratchet up some much needed numbers for Sony, only time will tell…

  • Sony revives second non-fiction show ‘Entertainment Ke liye…’

Sony revives second non-fiction show ‘Entertainment Ke liye…’

MUMBAI: A few weeks back when Sony Entertainment Television NP Singh was elevated to the post of CEO from COO, he had promised that he will make some changes in the channel’s programming and work on bringing it back into fighting fit shape. Apparently, he appears to be acting on that promise in double quick time.

A statement from the channel says that its talent reality show Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega is going to be back soon. “This is to inform you that SET’s show Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch bhi Karega is coming back. The auditions will start from 26 January,” it says.

While the date has been announced, no other details are known. A source from the channel says that Anu Malik, who has been the judge on earlier editions, has a big chance to come back this time too. However, the second judge hasn’t been finalised yet. “It could be Farah Khan, or somebody else may come in as well,” says the source, admitting that the hosts may also change.

Sony Entertainment is also looking at tweaking the format a bit to make it more appealing to audiences.

When we contacted Wizcraft TV head Namit Sharma that has produced the earlier editions of the show, he said it’s too early to talk about the details as nothing has been finalised – as of yet. “But we are starting silent auditions from the end of the month and we will go across the country to find exceptional talent,” he adds.

The talent show premiered on the channel in May 2009, just a month before India’s Got Talent kicked off on rival channel Colors. However, while IGT became one of the most talked about and popular properties of Colors, Entertainment… was given a quiet burial. However, the tongue-in-cheek and many times blunt comments of judges Anu Malik and Farah Khan caught the fancy of TV viewers.

The last season (season 4) was aired on the channel in 2011 and The Raibishi group from West Bengal was the winner.

NP – it appears – is relying on tried and tested non-fiction properties to buoy Sony Entertainment. Recently, he dragged out R&N Productions’ long-running Boogie Woggie from the back of the closet and relaunched it on the Hindi GEC. The trio of Ravi Behl, Naved and Jaavved Jafferi tweaked the format, added a lot more emotion and drama to the dance show, and since then it seems to have got its mojo back and appears to be doing very well for Sony.

Will Entertainment Ke Liye… do similarly well?

The first hour of this new show will feature Sonu at his best as a Radio Jockey. During this hour, listeners can learn from Sonu about a wide array of subjects, states an official release.

Listeners can also interact with Sonu one-on-one and request for their favourites in the “Sonu ji suno na” section and be part of his memories as he gets nostalgic in “Sonu ki suhani yaad”. “Aaj ab abhi” showcases his mood at the moment, while “Kaash” speaks of his unfulfilled desires. For instance, Sonu Niigaam talks about how he missed out on the opportunity to work with the great R D Burman on the super hit song “Ek ladki ko dekha toh…” from 1942 – A Love Story. All this and more that will make you wonder why he didn’t opt to be a professional RJ much earlier in his career, the release adds.

In the second hour, Sonu will step up gear by inviting a contemporary musical maestro or a veteran musician of yesteryears as a special guest on the hot seat, every week. The highlight of this segment, will be a stimulating tête-à-tête between the flamboyant singer and his high-profile guest, the likes of Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chouhan, Kunal Ganjawala, and Sandeep Chowta to name a few. The listeners will be witness to a stimulating conversation full of unadulterated fun, whacky and hilarious repartee between the guest & host as they spill the beans about their professional and personal triumphs.

Says Radio City CEO Apurva Purohit, “At Radio City we have always believed that great music, innovation and creativity in our shows is what sets us apart. We always create content with a discerning focus on Music. Apart from on-air presence, the show will go beyond radio sets and indulge its listeners with exciting on-ground initiatives like meet and greet events with Sonu Niigaam, contests, distributing celebrity merchandise, initiating a Sonu Niigaam fan club, SMS downloads and much more, the release informs.

The first episode of Life ki Dhun with Sonu Niigaam features Sonu Niigaam in conversation with Anu Malik. The deadly combination of Sonu & Anu has given us a number of hits like Border, Refugee and Main Hoon Na. Anu Malik reminisces his first recording with the legendary Mohammad Rafi. He takes a dig at Sonu Niigaam for imitating Radio City’s RJ Anirudh, and also takes up Sonu Niigaam’s challenge of singing a song completely without yoddling. The engaging conversation between the two stars will leave listeners gasping for more.
