  • Industry giants announce HD audio video network alliance

    MUMBAI: Charter Communications, JVC, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc., NBC Universal, Samsung and Sun Microsystems have come together to form HANA, the High Definition Audio Video Network Alliance.

    HANA members are working together to create a standards-based design guideline for secure high definition AV networks that will help advance commercial deployment of products and services and will enhance the consumer HD entertainment experience.

    In addition to the founding members, ARM, Freescale Semiconductor and Pulse~Link have joined HANA as contributing members.

    “Since HANA is a cross-industry effort with members from each of the impacted HD industries, we can achieve the ‘win-win’ necessary to commercialize HD networks. HANA is a milestone among industry alliances because we are starting in the living room, not the home office,” said HANA president Dr Heemin Kwon.

    HANA’s mission is to create industry design guidelines, utilizing existing technology and specifications that will help enable consumers to:

        View, pause and record 5+ HD channels simultaneously without compromising service quality;
        View, pause and record HD anywhere in the home with just one set top box;
        Share personal content from PCs to AV devices while keeping protected content secure;
        Control all AV devices and access content with just a single remote per room; and
        Add any device to the home network with just one cable.

    HANA is also in discussions with standards bodies such as the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), CableLabs, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the UWB Forum and the 1394 Trade Association.

    “We recognise the immense value that these groups bring to the HD industry. HANA is utilising their technologies to enable HD content sharing around the home. For example, by utilising 1394, HANA will eliminate the confusing tangle of cables used to connect TVs with home theaters, DVD players and other consumer electronics products, and let consumers use a single remote to control them all,” said Kwon.

    In the first half of 2006, HANA plans to work with AACS, Open Media Commons and other digital rights management technologies to gives consumers new flexibility in using content across the entire network, including managing copies across multiple devices such as portable video players. By including copyright detection technology, HANA will help consumers to access all of their personal video content while protecting content providers from piracy. This will also help enable content providers to make new and exciting HD content available to consumers in a more timely manner.

    HANA compliant products will include HDTVs, next generation DVD players, personal video recorders (PVRs), set top cable boxes and home theaters. The first commercial products are expected to be available in the second half of 2006. The alliance plans to facilitate compatibility among various manufacturers’ products through compliance testing and developers’ conferences.

    Looking ahead, HANA will also address:

        Advanced video compression technologies
        Interactive content
        Enhanced security
        OCAP
        Wireless Extensions

    “Another big ‘plus’ of the HANA approach will be the ability for one remote control to manage all of the video equipment that gets connected to a HANA network. This ‘one remote control per room’ capability is a major breakthrough and presents a tremendous opportunity for consumers to finally be able to have easy access to all their home video content,” said In-stat principal analyst Gerry Kaufhold.

    The over close to 500 entries from around the country had been sent.

    In a joint statement the judges said, “Indian sports journalism is certainly alive and well. The general standard was very good and it is a shame that only one person can be declared a winner. We did not expect such a challenging and interesting job. And what a response. We enjoyed doing it, but found it difficult too. It’s a farsighted view of the SJFI to have incorporated awards for regional languages like Hindi, Marathi and Bengali.”

    Jim Davey has been named senior vice president, Global Consumer Products Marketing and Planning. Tanya Haider has been appointed vice president, Nickelodeon & Viacom International Consumer Products. The positions have been created to bring global planning and execution to key franchises for Nickelodeon and Viacom.

    “Jim Davey and Tanya Haider have been instrumental in developing and growing Nickelodeon’s domestic licensing and merchandising business into a $4 billion annual retail business and they will be integral in taking our brands to new heights internationally,” says Brodsky. “The focus of these two individuals will be to continue the extension of our popular brands to ensure that we are everywhere our audiences are.”

    Formerly vice president Toys and Marketing, Nickelodeon, Consumer Products, Davey’s role will change to assume global marketing responsibilities for Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products. He will be instrumental in planning for Nickelodeon’s vast portfolio of properties, including SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, as well as Paramount’s Star Trek, Comedy Central’s South Park, MTV’s International licensing and select Spike TV properties, informs a company release.

    Tanya Haider is charged with growing the Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products businesses and brands internationally and will oversee businesses in Asia, Canada, Europe and Latin America. Haider will also be responsible for driving the growth of MTV international licensing and developing the Paramount library of properties as well as future Paramount movie licensing internationally, the release adds.

    Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products is a part of Nickelodeon Enterprises, the ancillary business unit of Nickelodeon Networks. • Star likely to announce news channel partner within 20 days

    NEW DELHI: The Rupert Murdoch-controlled Star expects to make an announcement over the next 15-20 days regarding probable partner(s) for its news venture, which would have to have an Indian collaborator holding not less than 74 per cent equity stake. It would be this entity that would then apply for uplinking news content from India for Star News channel.
    “We think that over the next fortnight or so we would have to make an announcement (regarding news uplinking),” Star India COO Sameer Nair told indiantelevision.com on the sidelines of a media briefing announcing here the launch of an action serial, Ak…tion Unlimited Josh, to be put on air from 16 May on Star Plus.
    Though Nair was not forthcoming on any further details on the probable partner(s), it is reliably learnt by indiantelevision.com that some talks are being held in Delhi too.
    Star either buys 26 per cent in an Indian company or forms a venture where Indians hold 74 per cent equity to conform to India’s new uplinking policy on news channels announced in March. Under a transitory clause in the policy, Star and CNBC India had been granted 90 days time to complete restructuring as per the local laws.
    Media has been abuzz with rumours as to who all can be Star’s partners if it decides to collaborate with more than one partner. Recently, two business dailies had floated the name of a premier corporate house of India, the Tatas, having interest in diversified fields like hospitality, IT, telecom, cement, etc.
    Interestingly, while one report said that the Tatas may pick up a minority stake of between 0-15 per cent in the uplinking company for news, the other report from Mumbai had stated that the Tatas are looking at collaborating with Star on a KU-band direct-to-home television venture.
    Conflicting signals from Star has not helped the matter much. “When we finally announce the name(s), it may take everybody by surprise,” another senior Star executive has said.
    But what looks certain is that this time round Star would not like to wait till the nth hour to finalise things as it may put a question mark on the continuation of Star News after the 90-day deadline given by the Indian government.
    After Star gets its act together, the new company would have to get various government clearances.
    Industry sources also said that the Indian bourses-listed Television Eighteen Ltd. is also close to wrapping up talks for a restructuring of CNBC India wherein CNBC Asia would offload part of its 51 per cent equity stake
    in CNBC India.
    The Mauritius-registered CNBC India, that oversees the working of the business channel of the same name, is a 49:51 per cent joint venture between TV Eighteen and CNBC Asia.
