  • US$ 20m Drishyam fund for 10 Indian films in two years, releases showreel

    MUMBAI: Mumbai-based Drishyam Films is set to launch a $20m Production Fund to facilitate the growth of independent Indian cinema and to escalate it to a global reach.

    The fund will be spent in developing and producing cutting edge original content that will be true to the Drishyam vision of cinema, i.e. local in its setting but global in its appeal. It will be put to use for producing 10 independent Indian films over the next two years.

    Manish Mundra, founder of Drishyam Films, expects to announce the first projects under the fund in the early 2018. In addition to the production of the films, the fund will also be used to develop Drishyam Films’ VFX Studio in Mumbai.

    The production fund, which is raised independently by Manish Mundra, will help Drishyam Films towards accomplishing their goals of building a platform for unique voices of Indian independent cinema and create global content with rich Indian flavours. 

    Mundra says: “This fund has been set up with the objective of taking Indian cinema to the next level internationally. We plan to take our focus on content driven cinema and merge it with high technical finesse to make films that will travel across the world.”

    The studio which has produced some of the most acclaimed and globally feted Indian films recently such as Ankhon Dekhi, Masaan, Dhanak, Umrika and Waiting also released a special showreel that celebrates their impressive body of work, and also gives audiences a sneak preview of their forthcoming releases.

    Apart from the fund, Mundra has two new features going into production over the summer – Mohamed Gani’s Cycle, about the importance of the humble bicycle in small-town India, and Ganesh Shetty’s Anonymous, about a woman and her relationship with society as she undergoes an abortion. Both films are being readied for festival submission by the end of the year.

    Drishyam Films has already had a great start to 2017, with their next release Newton starring Rajkummar Rao winning the CICAE Award at the Berlin International Film Festival 2017 and the Jury Prize for Best Film at the 41st Hong Kong Film Festival, 2017. More recently, their films won big at the 64th National Film Awards where Dhanak won Best Children’s Film, while Kadvi Hawa bagged a Special Mention.

    Ankhon Dekhi to open Dharmshala Film Festival later this month

    NEW DELHI: Rajat Kapoor’s critically acclaimed film Ankhon Dekhi will open the third Dharamshala International Film Festival on 30 October.
    The four-day festival will showcase feature films, documentaries, short films and animation films. Besides, DIFF will also host Masterclasses, panel discussions and Harun Farocki Retrospective.

    Feature films to be screened at the festival include Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court, Hansal Mehta’s Citylights, Geetu Mohandas’ Liar’s Dice, Avinash Arun’s Killa, Khyentse Norbu’s Vara: A Blessing, Meenu Gaur and Farjad Nabi’s Zinda Bhaag, Hany Abu-Assad’s Omar, Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die, Byamba Sakhya’sRemote Control, Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze’s Papusza and Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive.

    Gitanjali Rao will conduct a masterclass titled Paintings in Motion where she will take the audience from the origin of the idea, to the characters – who they are, where they come from – the style and design, the animatics with sound and music and finally the film in animation through her film which featured in the Critics Week at Cannes. She will go through the different explorations of mood, colors, sounds and music that shaped the film, and how to spin these together to create an emotional experience.

    The animation section will screen films by Shilpa Ranade, Gitanjali Rao and Nina Sabnani, among others.

    Q’s Nabarun, a documentary about famous Bengali writer Nabarun Bhattacharya who passed away in July, will have its world premiere at the festival.

    MUMBAI: Ragini MMS 2 has an eventful opening weekend serving the purpose of casting Sunny Leone in the lead, as she was expected to be the star draw. The film has collected Rs 21.4 crore for the opening weekend; but is not expected to sustain during the week.

     

    Ankhon Dekhi, Lakshmi and Gang Of Ghosts fail to find the audience this weekend.

     

    Bewakoofiyan starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Kapoor has failed to make a mark at the box office. After an indifferent four day opening weekend, the first week run accounts for Rs 12.55 crore.

     

    Queen continues to defy all norms to exceed its first week collections in week two backed by much appreciation. The film collects Rs 19.2 crore taking its two week tally to Rs 37.7 crore. The film continues to do well in its third week as well; lack of a worthy opposition helping its cause as well.

     

    Gulaab Gang drops below Rs 1 crore in its second week, adds just Rs 90 lakh taking its two week total to Rs 11.1crore.

     

    Total Siyapaa takes its two week tally to Rs 6.35 crore after adding Rs 50 lakh for its second week.

     

    Shaadi Ke Side Effects manages a fair sum of Rs 1.5 crore in its third week, in the absence of competition; taking its three week total to Rs 36.55 crore.
