Zee Cinema HD to premiere ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’

MUMBAI: It’s raining movie premieres on television and the latest one that will soon have its world television premiere is Dil Dhadakne Do, which is directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Zee Cinema HD will premiere the movie on 19 September at 8 pm.

Shot across the Mediterranean Sea on a cruise ship, the film stars Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Farhaan Akhtar, Anushka Sharma and Shefali Shah. Additionally, the film has narration by Aamir Khan.

  • ‘Welcome Back:’ Welcome indeed

    ‘Welcome Back:’ Welcome indeed

MUMBAI: Sequels enjoy a certain amount of brand equity. Welcome Back may have come eight years after it’s the first version, Welcome (2007), but the TV and video circuit nowadays helps the brand stay alive, especially in this case, since most of the main actors are same as in the original.

Welcome Back has one more similarity with the original, which is that film retains the same story line as the original to the T, well almost.

Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar are ex-dons who have given up the world of crime to live a normal life and are running a plush property in the UAE. As Nana never fails to mention, ‘Bhagwan ka diya hua sabkuchh hai,’ a dialogue he keeps repeating ad nauseam. They face many provocations but make all the effort to control their anger and trigger happy nature. Of course, it takes great restraint on Nana’s side as every time he is provoked, his blood pressure shoots up to an extent that the pressure gauge breaks its barrier!

One fine day, Nana’s father (Nana again in a brief dual role), married thrice already, arrives out of the blue and hands over his daughter, Shruti Hassan, from his third wife, to Nana so that he can live his last days in peace. Actually, he wants to be free to check the prospects of his fourth marriage! Nana and Anil are emotionally blackmailed into looking after her and are on the look out for a good suitor to marry her off.

Nana and Anil may have changed tracks but their reputation still follows them and when they approach Paresh Rawal and his wife, Supriya Karnik, the only decent family they know, with the proposal of Shruti for their son, John Abraham, he has no alternative but to say yes, albeit reluctantly out of fear of these ex-dons.

Paresh never knew he had a son because John is Supriya’s son from her first marriage which, again, Paresh did not know about. However, being childless, he agrees to take his wife’s son as his own. However, he needs to meet ‘his’ son first and the couple embark on a trip to India only to discover that John is a local dada and everybody including the cops keep out of his way. Paresh is worked up at first but delighted at the same time that he finally has an answer to Nana and Anil’s muscle power.

Not knowing Shruti is the one he is supposed to marry once in Dubai, John and Shruti have already fallen in love with each other in Mumbai. Nana and Anil are glad to find out that John is the son of Paresh. That is till John cuts these two ex-dons to size by thrashing all their goons. Humiliated, Nana and Anil decide to make sure John never gets Shruti. That is their revenge!

Soon, another angle opens up. There is a super don above all of them in Naseeruddin Shah, who is called Wanted bhai. It so happens that his drug addict son, Shiney Ahuja, has fallen for Shruti too and keeps painting her portraits all the time. Shah is too powerful for Nana and Anil. But, they are happy that they are getting their revenge from John. While they make sure John is kept away from Shruti, John and Paresh along with Shruti, make their own plans to outwit them as well as Shah and Shiney.

The process leads to a huge quagmire between three sides but is peppered with funny moments and witty dialogue. In fact, there is a sequence where Nana and Anil end up playing antakshari with imaginary ghosts in a cemetery! The climax is off the routine too and visually good. As in the original the hero saves the villains from death leading to the end of all feuds.

Welcome Back has two plus points working for it: the casting of male characters and the dialogues; female casting, though, leaves much to be desired. But, then, when you have so many men to be paid, the producers need to cut costs somewhere. The male cast is all known for talent and a flair for comedy. John can be counted out since his role needs muscle flexing, which he does as and when needed. Music is a liability despite having five composers on the credit lists but the makers have tried to make it tolerable with choreography, which includes huge crowds and costly sets. Photography is decent. Some scenes have been stretched and could have done with sharper editing.

As for performances, Anil, Nana, John, Shah, Paresh are in their element. Shiney is okay. Dimple is cast against her image but passes muster. Shruti is fair while Ankita Shrivastav is miscast and a no go. In fact, Surveen Chawala, who does an item song, has better presence.

Welcome Back is an entertainer, which does not disappoint and with the decent opening response that it has received, it should be an entertainer for its makers too.

‘Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale:’ Old-fashioned fun

Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale comes from a first time filmmaker, who decided to wield the megaphone after bouncing the idea around on other directors, convincing none. The idea was to make a musical love story but with melody makers at premium in the modern film music industry, the maker, Munnawar Bhagat, takes recourse to melodious hits from days of Shankar Jaikishan, Madan Mohan, Laxmikant Pyarelal and other such wizards and weaves a story around these songs.

Vije Bhatia has landed in Mumbai to make a profession out of his hobby of singing. Mumbai is still in its 1960 era of Raj Kapoor films or so it seems. Vije is given shelter, love and care by people while he strives for his talent to be noticed. To this end, he turns a busker. He starts singing and strumming his guitar at street corners. Inevitably, a crowd gathers and dances and claps to his renditions wherever he sings. Once he starts a song, which is actually a duet and gets stuck when the female part is to be sung. The crowds jeer him as if they had paid for his performance! But, one of his fans who comes to listen to his songs every day, Krutika Gaekwad, fills the void by singing the female version.

No filmmakers pass by Bhatia’s spot to discover him but a small time event manager, Arun Bakshi, does notice him. He was supposed to arrange some Anupji at Mrs Narang’s (Anju Mahendroo) party that evening but Anupji takes ill or maybe his flight never landed. He is convinced these two street singers can fill the gap. Reluctant at first, Anju is convinced to give them a chance. She has a makeover artist handy who turns the shabbily dressed singers into pop stars. Vije and Krutika enthral the guests and the host with melodious numbers from films of yore.

The pair is hit and at the same party they are signed on for a few more parties. The inevitable happens. Both are attracted to each other. However, Krutika has a past that won’t allow her this romance. She has a husband, Aditya Panscholi, a mother-in-law, Kishori Shahane, and a daughter. Her husband is usually in jail and calls himself a local ‘dada’. Now out of jail, he sees new prosperity in his house and instantly takes to beating Krutika. She is banned from not only singing but even stepping out of the house. He is brutal, to say the least.

While the first half is like a special episode of Chhayageet (once an immensely popular Doordarshan programme), the second half takes a detour to tell a story. The film takes a mushy turn for a while as melodies take a backseat till the climax.

The film’s story is rather old-fashioned and what makes its only USP as a stream of old melodies. The script is contrived and the direction is amateurish. Cinematography is good. Dialogue is routine. Production values and props are patchy.

Good performances come from Krutika and Kishori Shahane. Aditya is too loud. Arun and Anju are okay.

Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale is fun to watch thanks to its old songs, that is if people bother going to the cinema to check it out.

    Producer: Munnawar Bhagat

    Director: Munnawar Bhagat

Cast: Aditya Pancholi, Vije Bhatia, Krutika Gaekwad, Kishori Shahane, Arun Bakshi, Anju Mahendroo

Kher added, “Through my experiences in the industry, I have learnt that giving up is never an option; it is only an escape route from the challenges that could in fact, be monumental in shaping one’s lives. As we return with the second season of the show, the aim was to make The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai an endearing proposition that strikes an emotional chord with viewers while narrating a tale of positivity and perseverance. I hope that the nuggets of inspiration that we have been able to extract from the guests this year will appeal to viewers and convince them that the silver lining will find them in even the most clouded situations.”

The show will be promoted extensively across traditional and digital media platforms. Colors has roped in Henko Detergents as the powered by sponsor for the second year in a row.

  • Colors set to launch ‘The Anupam Kher Show’ season 2 in July

Colors set to launch ‘The Anupam Kher Show’ season 2 in July

MUMBAI: “You could dream and stop or believe and reach the stars” was the core message of Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC), Colors, promised last year and delivered through its talk show – The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai.

After having a popular stint last year, The Anupam Kher Show is all set to have its second season with an hope to extract more jewels of experience from celebrities and making them the shining beacon of possibilities for the audiences. The channel continues to have Jyothi Laboratories’ Henko as the ‘powered by’ sponsor.

The show is expected to go on-air in July and will continue to be a Sunday property.

The Anupam Kher Show is a format that has not been explored much but definitely experimented with by Hindi GECs. With this show, the genre saw a re-birth.

Hosted by veteran actor – Anupam Kher, the show gave an unprecedented glimpse into the lives of celebrities, as they revealed stories of faith, hope, struggle, victory and success.

Produced by Actor Prepares Productions, season one saw prominent celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Alia and Mahesh Bhatt, Vidya Balan, David and Varun Dhawan, Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, Kapil Sharma, Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah on the show.

In order to take the show a notch higher this season, Colors and Kher’s endeavour is to create a comfortable setting for the celebrities to share interesting anecdotes from their lives, which propelled them to achieve the goal they had set for themselves.

This season the line-up of celebrities include Kajol, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Irrfan Khan and Gulzar amongst others.

Unlike other chat shows where celebrities come to promote their movies, the beauty of The Anupam Kher Show is that it involves no movie integrations, is completely non-scripted and sans cue cards.

Though Kher had made the second season announcement a while back on Twitter, Colors CEO Raj Nayak made an announcement at the IIFA Awards 2015 this past weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

Kher’s tweet read, “Thank you @ColorsTV & @rajcheerfull for another season of #TheAnupamKherShow. Let’s share more inspiring stories.”

Sources inform that all the 12 episodes have been canned at Yash Rah Studios, Mumbai.

    Background

The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai is an extension of Kher’s autobiographical play Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai where he has openly spoken about his failure and how he manipulated his destiny. The thespian through the conversations with Bollywood’s biggest celebrities plans to uncover the hidden chapters from their book of life, stories of their resilience, heart breaks, triumphs and how they’ve turned every obstacle into a milestone just the way he resurrected his own life.

When compared to earlier talk shows such as Movers and Shakers on Sab, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai on Zee TV, Issi Ka Naam Zindagi on Star Plus and Koffee With Karan season 4 (repeats) on Star Plus, The Anupam Kher Show was rated the highest in terms of viewership for the launch episode.

According to data provided by the channel, The Anupam Kher Show opened with 2,591 TVTs in week 28, whereas Movers and Shakers recorded 2,283 TVTs,Issi Ka Naam Zindagi registered 1,089 TVTs and Koffee With Karan season 4 had garnered 738 TVTs.

According to Nayak, people’s perception was that talk shows don’t get the ratings and by achieving the title of highest rated show during launch, he believed the show had managed to get both, perception and ratings.

  • Dil Dhadakne Do: Alas, not the box office registers

Dil Dhadakne Do: Alas, not the box office registers

MUMBAI: Dil Dhadakne Do is a sort of Page 3 of a high end Delhi group of Punjabi families; just about every family having a bunch of not very glorious secrets. It is kind of Nukkad (a very popular, classic TV serial that captivated the Doordarshan audience between 1986-88). This serial brought together characters from a chawl settlement together at the street corner and told their stories.

Dil Dhadakne Do brings together a group of some upper-class Delhi Punjabi families together on a cruise ship; only here, even as this friendly group demonstrates bonhomie and love, each one is hiding a dagger behind the back. Bitching and backstabbing is the way of life here. Because, just about every participant in the jamboree represents a dysfunctional family.

Anil Kapoor is a self-made man rolling in millions. His favourite pastime is to tell and retell his success story.  His wife, Shefali Shah, like all such rich men’s wives, has little to do except deck up and meet with the wives of other such rich men. These women thrive in bitching about and badmouthing anyone of them who is not around. Anil has pinned all his hopes on his only son, Ranveer Singh, whom he expects to take over as the next boss of his company. He has married his daughter off to Rahul Bose, a Mumbai businessman.

The group has internal jealousies and enmities, all hidden behind a mask of smile. All the women know whose husband is having an affair with whom but are never willing to accept stories in their own backyard.

Imagine what can happen when a horde of such couples come together on a cruise for a fortnight with nowhere to escape.

Despite his ego and posturing, Anil is on the verge of bankruptcy. He can’t repay loans to banks, his products have become substandard. He urgently needs to infuse funds to save his enterprise and, more so, his face in the ‘society.’ However, this does not stop Anil from putting on a show. Though he or Shefali are never seen communicating without rancour, if at all, he decides to celebrate his wedding anniversary on a cruise ship, all expenses paid by him for all his friends.

Anil’s two friends, Parmeet Sethi and Manoj Pahwa, are sworn enemies and the initially discarded Parmeet needs to be added to the list of invitees, feels Shefali. For Parmeet is loaded. His only daughter, Ridhima Sud, has been humiliated when her prospective fiancé failed to attend their engagement ceremony. It was headline news in Delhi Times, it is said (a Times of India subsidiary, Junglee Pictures happens to be the partner in this film venture with Excel Entertainment). Hence, it is tough to find another suitor for her despite Parmeet’s riches. After all, marriage market is not OLX.

But, Anil has a plan. He counts on a barter with Parmeet: Ranveer as a dulha for Ridhima against 49% stake by Parmeet in to Anil’s sinking company to salvage it. But, in matters of heart, business deals don’t figure. While Ranveer has already fallen in ‘love at first sight’ with Anushka Sharma, a contracted singer/dancer on the cruise ship, Ridhima has found her mate in Parmeet’s sworn enemy, Pahwa’s son, Vikrant Massey.

More skeletons come out of the closet as Priyanka declares she could never come to love her husband, Bose. In fact, she still has the hots for Farhan Khan whom her father sent to US to study to keep him away from her. Anil’s business tours were all about his womanising. Farhan is the son of Anil’s manager and not quite a match for Priyanka in Anil’s society. But, to add to the drama, he arrives on the cruise too to grace the occasion and add some life to it.

The young ones prove to be smarter than their elders as they make a pact. Ridhima spends her nights in Vikrant’s cabin while Ranveer spends his with Anushka but Ridhima and Ranveer agree to pretend to be in love. The deal almost materialises as Ranveer’s engagement will be announced with Ridhima against Parmeet’s buying of 49% stake in Anil’s company. To use the social media phrase, ‘it’s complicated’!

Come out of the mess they all do, I mean writers and director with an easy solution that all such films adopt: everybody sees sense suddenly and it is QED!

Dil Dhadakne Do risks filling the screen with numerous characters but you never figure out who is what, especially to Anil and his family or in the story; in a while you stop caring. Except for a concerned few of them, none of the character is defined or explained. The script is loose and the director takes a 1970s art film approach like filming inconsequential scenes endlessly. Also, in an unsuccessful attempt to justify the horde of characters, limelight jumps from one character to another abruptly.

What kind of script have you worked on where a lot of the story is in verbal narration and, not funnily, told by Anil’s family dog (voice of Aamir Khan)! The first half looks warped in a balloon; even if the film moves a bit in the second half, it is partly and haphazardly towards the end. Dialogue is mundane. The editing needs a second go. Music as in songs are no help. Background fails to pace up the proceedings. Visually, the film is good.

Nobody really has a role to make an impact. However, Ranveer and Priyanka emerge the best triers. Anushka’s romantic pairing with Ranveer is a miscast and against public perception. Anil Kapoor’s character is sketched as an illogical one… with his throwing a lavish cruise party while facing bankruptcy to his shouting spree at his grown up children don’t make sense. Shefali is convincing. Farhan is good and so is Vikrant. Rest fill the bill.

Dil Dhadakne Do is an expensive project by all standards with a cast not known to justify such a cost besides being limited in content. Its theatrical take home will be limited to a great extent.
