Netflix facilitates downloads on Android memory cards

MUMBAI: OTT and VOD services have been adding a variety of content and myriad features to attract more and more consumers to their service in India. India is one of the fastest growing smartphone-owning countries as hinted by Ericsson recently.

Launched last year in India, Netflix, the entertainment streaming company, recently added the ability to download its dynamic entertainment content on memory card or expandable storage on Android operating system.

Users can now download content on Android smartphones and tablets. Earlier, the company had opened up the ‘watch offline’ feature as a response to the growing business race from players such as Amazon Prime and Hotstar.

The feature however is restricted to inbuilt storage. Players such as YouTube also have a similar limitation. But, the new feather in its cap could Netflix hike its user base in densely populated nations such as India.

But, the new feature does not surprise Nougat or Android Marshmallow users as they could already avoid limitations by using the adoptable storage option.

However, for those who can’t do this, they make use of Netflix app and move to the option of ‘download location’ and select from the storage options — SD card or internal storage.

MUMBAI: FCA and Google are using CES 2017 to demonstrate a seamless integration of the award-winning Uconnect 8.4-inch connected vehicle system featuring Android, the world’s most popular open-source operating system.

The collaboration focuses on the next generation of connected car systems, using the Android open-source platform. Android offers automakers user interface customisation, a full-featured automotive infotainment stack and ability to integrate Android apps into the vehicle’s infotainment system.

A hands-on concept demonstration of the power of combining Uconnect with Android is on display at the global consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow CES, 5-8 January in Las Vegas, inside a Chrysler 300 sedan.

FCA is in collaboration with Google regarding the next-generation connected car systems enabled by the power of an open platform and ecosystem of Android.

“This collaboration with Google has been an extremely beneficial opportunity for both companies to explore how in-vehicle infotainment and connectivity technology continues to evolve, and what it takes to meet consumers’ increasing desire for innovation of information with minimal distraction,” says FCA head of electrical engineering Chris Barman. “With Android, we are able to maintain our unique and intuitive Uconnect user interface, all while integrating our easy-to-use systems with Android’s features and ecosystem of applications.”

CES attendees can get one-on-one demonstrations of the Uconnect system powered by the latest version of Android, 7.0 Nougat, which includes core infotainment features such as radio and comfort controls.

The Uconnect and Android integration also enable a system that is built for connectivity and compatibility with the universe of popular Android applications. The demonstration will show a seamless integration with Google Assistant, Google Maps and popular Android apps like Pandora, Spotify, NPR One and Pocket Casts.

“Google is committed to building Android as a turn-key automotive platform that integrates deeply with the vehicle in a safe and seamless way,” said Google director of android engineering Patrick Brady. “This collaboration with FCA brings together the industry standard for connected car systems with Android to create powerful infotainment systems designed for the digital age.”

Twitter launches #Stickers as visual hashtags connecting photos

MUMBAI: Twitter has announced fun photo editing tool #Stickers. Users can choose from hundreds of accessories, emojis, and props and stick them anywhere on photos they upload to Twitter.

When editing a photo, a library of stickers will be available across several categories, including accessories, animals, food, technology, flags, etc. Like hashtags on Twitter, the stickers will make tweeting easy for people to explore a topic they’re interested in, and join in on the public, global conversation.

The stickers can be resized, rotated and placed anywhere on a photo.

“Millions of Tweets with photos are sent every day on Twitter, capturing the moments that the world is talking about,” said Twitter CMOLeslie Berland. “#Stickers give people a fun way to add their own unique style to their photos, and connect them with others around the world. By making stickers searchable like hashtags, we’re enabling the best of Twitter: making it easy for people to create conversations around events and experiences that are happening right now.”

Any public Tweet containing a sticker will now be easily searchable and discoverable, creating a new visual spin on the hashtag; simply tapping on a sticker brings up a new timeline of Tweets from people around the world using that same sticker.

The featured category will highlight live stickers tied to world events, holidays or other themes, making it easy for people to join in on timely conversations. A timeline of Tweets using a specific sticker is easily accessible by tapping on that sticker within any photo on Twitter.

The feature is rolling out over the coming weeks on Twitter for iOS and Android.
