DTH satellite GSAT 9 (South Asia Sat) blasts off today

  • AsiaSat 9 set for 28 September launch

MUMBAI: AsiaSat 9, AsiaSat’s most powerful satellite, is set for launch on 28 September Moscow time 09:50pm (29 September Baikonur time 00:50am, Hong Kong time 2:50am) on a Proton M/Breeze M rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, after being in storage at Space Systems Loral’s facility with its Pre-ship Review passed in April.

AsiaSat 9, Asia’s next generation satellite, will replace AsiaSat 4 at 122 degrees East longitude. Designed  with  innovative  and  cutting  edge  features,  this  new  satellite  will  deliver  significantly improved performance and higher efficiency for customers’ services.

New services on AsiaSat 9 include the world’s first dedicated Ku-band Myanmar beam and the new Ku-band Indonesia and Mongolia beams, in addition to two enhanced Ku-band beams serving Australasia and East Asia, and a C-band footprint that offers wider high-power coverage over Asia, Australasia and the Pacific region. AsiaSat 9’s five Ku-band beams are equipped with cross-strap beam switching capability to provide flexible coverage.

“We are excited to announce the launch date of the AsiaSat 9 mission following the long-awaited return of Proton’s service and its recent successful launch in June.  With our newest satellite AsiaSat 9, we are primed to serve existing customers and new users as we reach a new milestone, presenting more  cost-efficient  opportunities,  enhanced  quality  and  faster  services  for  applications  through mobility,  broadband  data  networks,  and  DTH  services.  As  we  have  broadened  our  scope  and innovated to  provide  advanced satellite solutions,  we are confident  in the opportunities satellite services create for future broadcasting and communications throughout the Asia-Pacific region,” said AsiaSat president and CEO Andrew Jordan.

Manufactured by Space Systems Loral, AsiaSat 9 is an SSL 1300E satellite equipped with 28 C-band and 32 Ku-band transponders, and a Ka-band payload. Unique features onboard the AsiaSat 9 spacecraft include the most powerful C-band TWTA at 110 watts, combined with special filter design to achieve higher bandwidth for higher throughput, an increase of 23 per cent across wider coverage; fitted hall effect thrusters and star tracker to achieve higher stability and reliability in satellite operation, and better performance at the edge of beam coverage.

  • CASBAA Sat Forum: Innovation at every level vital, b’band driving HTS, a maturing tech

MUMBAI: “There have been more dramatic changes in the global satellite industry in the past two years than we have been seen in the last twenty-five,” said SES Networks’ CEO Steve Collar, at the close of the CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2017 in Singapore.

That comment summarised nine hours of high-octane insights, statements and data downloads testing the temperature of the Asian satellite market at CASBAA’s 17th annual meeting of satellite executives, engineers and investors.

“This has been an energising, challenging day which laid out the immediate and long-term opportunities and challenges for the satellite sector in Asia in terms of both commercial and technical issues,” said CASBAA CEO, Christopher Slaughter. “We have been given a lot to think about. Innovation at every level must be at the heart of all our businesses.”

According to keynote speaker – AsiaSat CEO Andrew Jordan, video distribution via satellite represents some 70% of revenues for most geo-satellite operators in the region with Ultra High Definition (UHD) and 4K services “all the rage” despite representing a less than 20% transition from Standard Definition services in Asia. “Mobility and broadband are the latest must-have applications, driving HTS (High Throughput Satellites) which is a maturing technology with enormous promise,”

The potential benefits and disadvantages of HTS and “cut-throat” competition were an overarching theme of the conference, which also covered such items as in-flight connectivity, maritime services, reusable launch vehicles, flat panel antennas, new satellite manufacturing processes and the on-going promise of the satellite market in India.

  • CASBAA Forum ’17 set to tackle critical issues

MUMBAI: At a time of unprecedented technological and business change for the Asia Pacific satellite sector, the CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2017 (22 May at the Four Seasons, Singapore) is set to tackle the most critical issues experienced by the industry after more than two decades of continuous growth.

During the packed agenda for the Forum 2017, the Keynotes, Panels, Short Presentations, Interviews and Networking Breaks will focus on the promise of tomorrow as well as the challenges of today.

Re-usable Launchers are impacting business plans at every level, Massive LEO Constellations are now set for take-off, Space Junk Galore is making headlines, and emerging technologies such as IOT and Flat Panel Antennas are promising to change the game yet again. All this is taking place at a time while revenue growth remains marginal, and when operators in space markets around the world urgently need to capitalize on premium plans.

How can Asian satellite operators retain their Video Spectrum and serve smaller customers with economic efficiency?

Other topics to be debated include:

    · Keynote: “Re-entering Asia” with Andrew Jordan, CEO, AsiaSat

After more 15 years anchored in Europe and Australia, AsiaSat CEO Andrew Jordan has returned to the region with fresh perspectives and a clear-sighted view of “The “Asian Opportunity”.

    · “What can they be Thinking? Let’s hear it from the Customers”

Competition is all fine and good, but when it leaves the customer feeling bruised, what should the industry be doing?

    · The C-suite fortune hunters

In the air and on the ground, the global satellite industry is entering the future at warp speed. But do the Next Gen Operators have all the answers?

    · With India in View: Forever complex; forever dynamic

Even as India makes great stridsdes in the launch sector (104 smallsats orbited in a single cluster this March), the dynamic domestic communications market remains subject to complex rules and interventions.

    · In-flight connectivity is evolving as a key revenue stream — just as the future of the Mobility Market remains unpredictable.

“More than 100 companies have registered for the CASBAA Forum 2017 with half the audience coming from Asia and much of the balance from the US and Europe,” said Christopher Slaughter, CEO, CASBAA. “With so much change in the air the issues are more critical than ever. The ‘Need to Know’ is paramount.”
