ITC’s diversification strategy gains traction as profits climb to record highs

KOLKATA: ITC, India’s Rs 1.25 lakh crore conglomerate, demonstrated the resilience of its multi-business model in the quarter ended 30th September 2025, posting net profit from continuing operations of Rs 5,179.82 crore—up 4.1 per cent—as its diversification investments continue to mature. For the half year, profit surged three per cent to Rs 10,092.18 crore, underscoring the momentum building across its portfolio.

The numbers reveal a company hitting its stride. Cigarettes, the engine that funds ITC’s expansion ambitions, delivered robust 6.7 per cent revenue growth to Rs 8,722.83 crore, with segment profit reaching Rs 5,240.66 crore. This performance, achieved despite elevated taxation, provides the cash flow for the group’s ambitious forays into branded foods, personal care and digital ventures.

More importantly, ITC’s strategic investments in FMCG are showing tangible progress. The other FMCG businesses—spanning Aashirvaad staples, Bingo snacks, Sunfeast biscuits and personal care products—grew revenue 6.9 per cent to Rs 5,964.44 crore. Whilst brand-building costs continue to weigh on near-term margins, EBITDA for this segment improved to Rs 594.08 crore. Management’s patient capital approach is paying dividends as these brands gain market share in India’s vast consumption economy.

The paperboards division, a testament to ITC’s manufacturing prowess, grew revenue 5 per cent to Rs 2,219.92 crore with healthy margins. The agri business, though affected by seasonal commodity price volatility, remains a critical link in ITC’s farm-to-fork value chain.

On a consolidated basis—reflecting the group’s expanding footprint through subsidiaries including ITC Infotech and new acquisitions like Sresta Natural Bioproducts—the picture brightens further. Revenue stood at Rs 21,255.86 crore whilst profit climbed 4.2 per cent to Rs 5,186.55 crore. For the half year, consolidated profit jumped 4.6 per cent to Rs 10,529.96 crore, with earnings per share at Rs 8.28.

The company’s balance sheet remains fortress-like, with total assets of Rs 90,802.66 crore and negligible debt. Cash generation remained strong, with operating activities throwing off Rs 5,782.15 crore in the half year, funding both dividends of Rs 9,823.58 crore and continued capital expenditure of Rs 1,006.71 crore.

The board’s decision to appoint Amitabh Kant, architect of India’s economic reforms as former Niti Aayog chief, as an independent director signals ambitions for the next phase of growth. The reappointment of Hemant Malik as wholetime director ensures continuity in execution.

ITC’s transformation from a cigarette company into a diversified consumer powerhouse is well underway. With market-leading positions emerging in multiple FMCG categories, a robust pipeline of innovation, and the financial muscle to sustain long-term investments, the company is positioning itself to capture India’s consumption boom. The patience investors have shown may soon be rewarded as scale benefits begin to flow through.

The evening started with a spectacular musical performance by The Delhi Police’s All-Women Band, featuring 85 talented female officers. Setting the tone for the evening in her welcome address,CNBC-TV18 managing editor  Shereen Bhan said, “Our campaign aims to spark genuine discussions on women’s economic empowerment and their role in the economy. We’ve successfully brought this conversation nationwide through ‘Future. Female. Forward – The Women’s Collective’ and globally at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2023 and 2024. We also aimed to promote gender balance in organisations by compiling best practices and actionable solutions from diverse leaders over the past year.”

Emphasising on the topic ‘Interaction on Championing Gender Inclusion’, HSBC India CEO Hitendra Dave said, “We are honoured to have partnered with CNBC-TV18 on a cause that has ignited conversations, both within HSBC and on broader platforms. Our commitment to fostering equality of opportunity, including gender parity, is paramount. Through transparent practices such as disclosing pay by gender and implementing fair recruitment, promotion, and evaluation processes, we are fostering open dialogue and tangible change. We recognize the importance of diversity not only as a social imperative but also as a strategic advantage, enabling us to better serve our diverse customer base”. He added, “Achieving 100% equality of opportunity is our ultimate goal, ensuring that biases are eliminated and all individuals are given fair consideration in every aspect of our operations”. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 80% of the workforce producing PPE suits comprised women, showcasing their resilience and dedication. Additionally, 6 million frontline workers, predominantly women, tirelessly provided door-to-door medical services. This paradigm shift reflects India’s commitment to its promises. It was an enlightening moment for me because I realised we need to describe this business in a different way. Though we help people with important goals in their life all the time, we didn’t describe it that way. Once we start communicating in a way that resonates with women, then we will attract more women to it.”

India’s first female firefighter Harshini Kanhekar expressed, “Unfortunately, my attempts to join the Indian Air Force and subsequently the Indian Army were unsuccessful. Despite these setbacks, I remained resilient and pursued other avenues. A friend suggested I explore the National Fire Service College to fulfill my desire to wear a uniform. Unaware that the college had no female students, I applied, nonetheless. Upon visiting the college with my father, an individual remarked that ‘this college is not made for you, please go somewhere else’. • India should become first country to industrialize without carbonizing; create unique model of development: Amitabh Kant

India should become first country to industrialize without carbonizing; create unique model of development: Amitabh Kant

Mumbai: G-20 Sherpa, Government of India, Amitabh Kant, has said that transition to a circular economy can bring significant benefits to India, ranging from environmental conservation to economic growth and job creation. It’s emphasis on reducing waste generation, promoting local production and resource optimization, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions aligns with India’s commitments to sustainable development and climate change mitigation. “When countries like India begin the long march towards growth and development, it must create a unique model of development where we become the first country in the world to industrialize without carbonizing,” he added.

Addressing the ‘FICCI Circular Economy Symposium’, Kant further stated that it is imperative for India to grow rapidly from the current rate of 7.5 per cent and accelerate the pace of growth to 9-10 per cent per annum in the years to come. The model of development for India has to be very different and to be able to do that we need to focus on bringing renewable energy in India including producing renewable energy and green hydrogen. “India is climatically blessed to produce green hydrogen. Currently the cost of production of green hydrogen is $4.5 per kg and India’s objective is to bring is down to $1 per kg by 2030,” he added.

Kant highlighted that the world is going through massive disruption and soon the focus will be on electric mobility especially for two, three and four-wheelers. There is also the need to bring in huge energy efficiency along with huge focus on circular economy. He also emphasized that India must give thrust on the process of recycling. Circular economy is an economic system where means of production are organized around recycling, reusing the inputs so that they can be used to reduce environmental emission and facilitate a sustainable mode of production.

“We need to achieve the circularity of inputs. India is currently not circular, and the economic model is linear. There is a radical need to transit to circular economy as it opens huge possibility of innovation, disruption, help reduce greenhouse emissions,” he added.

The transition to circular economy can bring significant benefits to India and we need to become the global champions to accelerate this transition process including investing in infrastructure and encouraging innovations, noted Kant.

Counsellor, head of section – delegation of the European Union to India Dr Michael Bucki, said that there is a huge potential in circular economy between India and the EU and there is a lot of room for mutual learning between the two.

SABIC VP,  regional head- South Asia & Australia, Janardhanan Ramanujalu, said that rapid urbanization, deforestation, and exponential population are some of the challenges of carbon dioxide imbalance in the atmosphere and all stakeholders need to find a solution to these. “We need to focus on the concept of circular carbon economy. Carbon capture and utilization, recycling carbon-based products, becoming energy efficient and innovation in materials are few steps to achieve circular carbon economy,” he added.

National CE Committee chair and Mahindra LifeSpace Developers Ltd MD & CEO Amit Shah said that embracing the circular economy will also be an important contribution to societies effort to handle urgent climate change challenges.

FICCI National CE Committee co-chair and Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Ltd chief sustainability officer Naresh Tyagi said innovation and collaboration are the way for the industry to move towards a circular economy.

During the event ‘4th FICCI Circular Economy Awards’ were announced along with the release of ‘National Unified Circularity Measurement Framework’.

Mumbai: India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant presented the Managing India Awards at the Golden Jubilee National Management Convention in New Delhi.

The India Today Group founder, publisher and editor-in-chief Aroon Purie got the Lifetime Contribution to Media Award while Maruti Suzuki India Ltd chairman R C Bhargava received the Lifetime Contribution Award. Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies chairperson Rohini Nilekani took the Corporate Citizen Award. All awardees were joined by their spouses during the presentation of trophies.

The citations for the awards were read by Hero Enterprise chairman Sunil Kant Munjal, television show host Rajiv Makhni, and renowned cinema actor and director Nandita Das.

Presenting the awards, Kant said that it was a great honour for him to present awards to three great people who he had grown up admiring.

Sharing his experience as India’s G20 Sherpa, Kant said that it was a job of taking one’s leader to the top of Mount Everest.

Talking about India’s strategy and achievements during its presidency of G20, Kant said that the PM wanted the opportunity to be used to transform the districts and cities where the 220 G20 meetings were to take place, which was done.

The negotiations proved tougher than anticipated, Kant said. However, he could be ambitious and courageous as G20 Sherpa because he had the full backing of the Prime Minister. “The PM’s directive was to be decisive and action oriented,” he said. It took nine days of non-stop negotiations in a room without phones, away from the media, to achieve consensus on the Russia-Ukraine statement. “We pushed the limits and took it to the level of brinkmanship to achieve success,” he said.

India demonstrated its ability to drive multilateralism and bring everybody on board, Kant said, and attributed India’s ability to do so to India’s status as the 5th largest economy in the world.

Talking about pushing the agenda of global south in G20, Kant said that the PM wanted India to put the global south first and India’s G20 presidency began with a virtual meeting of the region’s countries. This year, 80 per cent of the global growth came from the south, he pointed out.

Kant said that India managed to achieve consensus on every issue, including redesigning the multilateral institutions, pushing digital public infrastructure, climate change, climate finance, green growth, women-led development, and inclusion of Africa. He pointed out that India achieved 112 outcomes during its presidency of G20 compared to 50 by the previous president, Indonesia.

India’s digital public infrastructure was a key focus during the presidency, as 133 countries lack fast payment systems. “It became important to evangelize DPI model, which is open and interoperable unlike the big tech model of the US and China,” he said.

Accepting the Managing India Award, Purie said that he was delighted to receive the award at this particular time because the media has become the whipping boy for everyone and everyone blames all ills of the society on the media. “We’re not perfect. Bad apples exist in every industry and profession. Aren’t there bad apples in business and bureaucracy?” he said.

Stressing the importance of the media in today’s India, Purie said,”A free press is essential for our democracy, especially when democracy is not functioning so well…when more debates are held on television than in Parliament.” Purie expressed worry about the epidemic of fake news, and the potential of AI to make it worse. “Truth is in danger of becoming an endangered species…journalists have to step up and do their job honestly,” he said.

Bhargava said that the award was somewhat an anomaly because when he joined Maruti, he knew nothing about management. He credited his colleagues for teaching him management. “Individuals can never achieve. All achievements are collective,” he said.

In her acceptance speech, Nilekani said, “We live in complex and challenging times. We need to cultivate empathy, self-restraint and charity to create a successful samaaj, a safe harbour for our children and grandchildren.”

Opening the awards ceremony, AIMA president Shrinivas Dempo brought attention to the focus of the 50th National Management Convention and emphasized that India needed to raise its thinking and action to the next level. “The new India needs a new dream – a dream of being a country with high standards of living for every Indian, a dream of being an evolved country that offers the world new models of economy, democracy, governance, technology, and culture,” he said.

AIMA senior vice president Nikhil Sawhney thanked Kant for presenting the awards and congratulated the winners. “Each one of you is special and each one of you has made a transformative contribution in a critical sector of the Indian economy,” he told the awardees.

Rieter India Pvt Ltd co-chairman Sudhir Jalan introduced the awards and complimented the jury for its excellent selection of awardees.

The awards ceremony was live-streamed on AIMA’s social media channels.
