    ‘Piku’: Joyride

MUMBAI: Juhi Chatruvedi came up with the idea of a sperm donor in Vicky Donor in 2012. One of the things never discussed on an open forum. The film hit the bull’s eye. This time again in Piku, she has come up with a theme, which deals with a problem millions of people suffer from but never discuss in the open: constipation.

To Juhi’s credit, like she did in Vicky Donor, here too she makes the story an all-encompassing one. The kind of films, say, Hrishikesh Mukherjee would make. Weaving around the story of a hypochondriac, it adds the aspects of romance, family ties et al in a subtle manner while not making the film a one track toilet humour; she soon converts it into a road movie that leads to a traditional family and roots ending.

Amitabh Bachchan, the 70 year old homebound widower, suffers from chronic constipation but, being a hypochondriac, he imagines all other illnesses possible. Albeit, his illnesses are all psychosomatic, like if his temperature moves from 98.4 to 98.8, he feigns illness.

Bachchan is the kind who is disappointed if his blood tests reports or BP are normal. Deepika is his only daughter too much in love with her father and tolerates all his idiocies. She complies with all his whims of being a hypochondriac though she knows there is nothing wrong with him. Taking his temperature, taking his blood pressure and preparing his medical doses from hundreds of pills he has gathered.

Deepika hates Bachchan’s ways but also complies with them. Bachchan’s constipation updates are bizarre, and he even sends her updates about it through her office receptionist, which is read out in an important client meeting.

Just when you think you have had enough of the toilet humour, thankfully, the film changes track and becomes a road movie.

Irrfan, a qualified engineer, runs his dead father’s private cab service since he was sacked from his job in the Middle East. His company regularly caters to Deepika, dropping her to office every morning and getting her home again. She is as finicky as her father, Bachchan, and no driver from Irrfan’s company wants to ferry her. They do it reluctantly, though.

Bachchan has this lucrative offer to sell his huge house in Kolkata, which he is reluctant to sell while Deepika thinks it is time they got rid of it. Bachchan decides to travel to Kolkata to take a final call on the matter. The palatial villa is occupied by Bachchan’s brother and sister in law, who are insecure fearing the villa will be sold. Bachchan has his own peculiar reasons for not travelling by air or train.

A vehicle is booked with Irrfan’s company but no driver is willing to drive Deepika for such a long journey. Eventually, Irrfan has to drive them and this drive is a fun ride for the audience. This is where the film takes a detour from toilet humour and road show and introduces a bit of family and traditions.

Bachchan was never in favour of selling his ancestral home while Deepika was. There a is a third influence as dumb sounding cab driver who, they learn is the owner of the fleet. It turns out he is not dumb but very clever and logical. His suggestions help Bachchan and Deepika change their way of thinking. Thanks to him, even Deepika is convinced that the ancestral property should not be sold.

Bachchan’s one ultimate aim in life is to get rid of his constipation before he dies. But, before that, he also wants to live a normal life. Towards this end, one fine day, he borrows the house help’s bicycle and goes on a 25 km ride through Kolkata and gorges on street food. With that, he also comes out of his psychosomatic cocoon and realises his wish of a clear stomach for once!

The side track is about Irrfan and Deepika’s chemistry. Hard as she tries not to get impressed with his native intelligence, eventually, she does develop a soft corner for him.

This is a very clever and balanced script which is thoroughly enjoyable. Shoojit Sircar, who also directed Vicky Donor, from Juhi’s script, does a neat job once again with Piku. Dialogues are quirky at times to blend with Bachchan’s character and generally witty. Music is functional. Cinematography is pleasing. Editing is crisp. The film is all about performances and all three, Bachchan, Irrfan and Deepika excel. Maoushumi Chatterjee in a brief role is as lively as ever. Raguveer Yadav is good.

Piku is an entertainer all the way and despite the tepid opening response, it should pick up over the weekend.

Producers: N P Singh, Ronnie Lahiri, Sneha Rajani
    Director: Shoojit Sircar
Cast:Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, Moushumi Chatterjee, Raghuveer Yadav, Jishu Sengupta

Shoojit Sircar tries Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s style in ‘Piku’

NEW DELHI: If at one time it was said that the stars made or unmade a film at the box office, it can now safely be said that the buzz created on the social media – especially by the stars of a film – contribute vastly to its success.

More than a fortnight before the release date of Piku, Amitabh Bachchan had started sending out trailors of the film on his Twitter handle with messages like ‘Laughter! Enjoyment! Fun! That’s what happens when crazy people get together.’

If the popularity of the trailer on social media is anything to go by, Piku is amongst the most anticipated films this year, particularly as it is reminiscent of the light-hearted films of the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee – even when he dealt with serious subjects.

The film, which will release on 8 May, is produced by the makers of Vicky Donor starring Bachchan along with Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.

Quirky and funny with oodles of situational humour, the film highlights the eccentricities within every Indian family, told in signature Shoojit Sircar style.

While this film about a crazy father-daughter duo is packaged with ingredients that make for a perfect family comedy, Sircar seems to be bringing back the slice-of-life-cinema, which was made popular by filmmakers like Mukherjee.

A huge admirer of Mukherjee’s work, Sircar explores a relatable story and human relationships reminiscent of Hrishikesh Mukherjee films like Gol Maal, Mili, Chupke Chupke and Guddi promising clean entertainment to the audiences after a long time.

Sircar said, “Piku has got a universal connect because every Indian family or for that matter every family is quirky and crazy in its own way. In this case, Baba and Piku make for one of the craziest families around. All I have done is take the camera and place it between them as they go about living their life replete with events and situations that are bizarre, crazy and yet very familiar to you and me. Hrishikesh Da told the simplest stories in the most unusual and entertaining fashion, which is why audiences still swear by them. We hope to warm your heart and put a smile on your face through Piku!”

  • Sony on correction course; set to launch 4 new shows

Sony on correction course; set to launch 4 new shows

MUMBAI: 2014 was a middling year for Sony Entertainment Television (SET). Though the audience saw the channel experimenting with new concepts and shows, a few earned some fame, while the others failed to grab eyeballs.

SET made some smart moves, whether it was getting out of the studio and moving closer to the audiences in season eight of Kaun Banega Crorepati or Amitabh Bachchan’s television debut in the fiction format – Yudh, which was touted to be India’s most expensive show in that segment (Rs 3 crore per episode). While the channel’s hopes were riding high on the latter, the dark content was unpalatable for the audience.

On the fiction soap front, the channel’s high bet with Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar starring Ronit Roy did not do as well as expected. Other fiction series like Humsafars, Hum Hai Na and Tum Aise Hi Rehna only saw a glimmer of hope.

Reason: Female audiences didn’t stick on and male audiences continued to come on to the channel’s popular shows like CID, Aahat, Crime Patrol and Bhanwar.

However, now the channel is on a correction course and is all set to woo its existing audiences once again as well as rope in new viewers. SET SVP and business head Nachiket Pantvaidya revealed that in order to up the channel’s entertainment quotient, five new shows will go on air over the next two – three months.

Not just to intrigue the audience but to also provoke thought and reactions from them, the channel aims to attract newer audiences (mainly female) with high-concept shows backed by a powerful star cast.

First up, starting 13 April, the channel will launch Reporters, revealing the challenging world of news in a contemporary way. As reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, the show, produced by Rose Audio Visuals, revolves around the life of journalists with an intense underlying love story.

It will air every Monday-Thursday at 9 pm competing with shows like Diya Aur Baati Hum (Star Plus), Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat (Colors), Laut Aao Trisha (Life OK), Chidiya Ghar (Sab) and Kumkum Bhagya (Zee TV).

Second up, the channel kicked-off auditions for its singing reality show, Indian Idol Junior 2 in Kolkata on 4 April. After Kolkata, the audition process will move to Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai on 11 April, 18 April and 25 April respectively. The show is expected to go live in the month of May.

The third new show from SET’s stable is the mythological show titled Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanuman. Produced by Contiloe Productions, it will depict the life of Lord Hanuman. The series is set to hit television screens from 4 May. For the record, Contiloe Pictures is currently producing Maharana PratapAdaalat and Bhanwar on Sony.

With growing popularity of the mythological genre, Sony will add yet another show to its kitty titled Suryaputra Karn. The show is produced by Swastik Pictures, which had also produced Mahabharat for Star Plus.

Suryaputra Karn will cover life journey of the Great Archer of Indian history Karna, who always craved for legitimacy, had been extremely loyal to his friend and the only one who could defeat Arjun. The promos for the same have already created a buzz. Sources close to the channel say that the show will hit airwaves in May.

Last but not the least, the channel is set to further awaken the masses with period drama called Rani Mahal. Produced by Lost Boy Productions, it stars Sakshi Tanwar in a leading role and will hit television screens in June.

Rubbishing media reports of it being a remake of Game Of Thrones, producer Vikas Gupta said, “This is nowhere close to Game of Thrones.”

It may be recalled that as its first step towards a revamped programming strategy, Sony launched the Ram Kapoor starrer Dil Ki Baatein on 23 March, which is telecast from Monday to Thursday at 9:30 pm.

It remains to be seen whether Sony’s fresh line-up of shows manages to propel the channel up on the ratings chart.

Amitabh Bachchan felicitated by Egyptian Academy of Arts

NEW DELHI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has been named for the Padma Vibhushan this year, will receive an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Arts, Egypt during a visit to as chief guest of the mega festival ‘India by the Nile’.

Organized by the Indian Embassy in collaboration with the Indian Culture and Tourism Ministries and the Cairo Opera House, this is considered the biggest foreign fair in Egypt amidst a political unrest and violent extremist attacks, and is aimed at sending a message that the country is safe for tourists, according to Indian Ambassador to Egypt Navdeep Suri.

The Indian ambassador said the focus was to get in more tourists in Egypt from India and the idea to rope in Bachchan as the chief guest for the festival this year stemmed from that.

The third edition of the festival formally commences tomorrow and will continue till 17 April. achchan, 72, will speak about his films, particularly Amar Akbar Anthony at the Opera House tomorrow and will also be present at a gala event at the Pyramids the same day.

In the run up to the festival, artistes from India and Egypt presented a Bollywood performance at the airport. Delhi-based dance group kick started the performance with Bachchan’s hit song Ye Dosti from the movie Sholay and went on to perform on the hit Dil Chahta Hai track Koi Kahe.

Young college girls chanted “Indiawale” as the performers danced to the beats of the dhol. Their act was followed by a dance number by Cairo-based dance group comprising five young girls, who are all self-confessed Bollywood fans.

The gala inauguration will be followed by a new musical ‘Bollywood extravaganza: A Tale of Passion, Love and Revenge’, which will run at the Opera House from 1 to 3 April and will see more than 35 Indian dancers performing to the much-loved music of Indian cinema.

The musical will also travel to Egypt’s second largest city Alexandria, in north central part of the country. As part of the festival, a Bollywood dance workshop was also organised today at Medan Theatre in the Cairo Opera House complex.

“The proposition we gave last year was Egypt is going through a rough patch (and) tourism is badly hurt. Many countries have issued advisories against visiting the country. We said we are committed to do the festival and we will not go back even if you have the occasional bomb blasts or elections,” Suri said at the Indian Embassy in Cairo.

“This year the approach to tourism was that they wanted to get more visitors from India. In 2010 the number was 114000. The idea was to grow that number and that’s why we decided how about getting an iconic figure like Bachchan, at the iconic place such as the pyramids.

“The idea worked… he has been phenomenally gracious. It is generous of him to make time for the festival,” Suri added. The festival will also feature performances by a Manipuri dance group, yoga sessions and an Indian street food festival.

“Three years ago we wanted to do an Indian cultural programme partly to get away from the notion that India is all about Bollywood,” Suri said.

  • 5 Bollywood co-stars that get along like a house on fire

5 Bollywood co-stars that get along like a house on fire

MUMBAI: Bollywood has seen many long lasting friendships, many of which started out on sets of various films. And when co-stars turn friends, the audience can literally see their magic translate on the silver screen, and their movies have that extra magic that no one can quite define.

Here are five examples of on and off screen friendships that set the screens on fire:

Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor: Both Singh and Kapoor knew each other very well even before they became a part of the film industry. So when they were offered Gunday, their chemistry was evident onscreen for everyone to see. The two young and energetic actors were indeed a treat for the movie-goers.

Katrina Kaif-Ranbir Kapoor: This cosmic duo has been great friends since they first met on the sets of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani. Ranbir and Kaif reportedly got along immediately during their first shoot schedule and share a very strong rapport since then. Their onscreen performances rightly reflect the bond and comfort they share. This peerless couple will soon be seen in their next film – Jagga Jasoos.

Kunal Kohli-Jennifer Winget: This combination is never-seen-before. However, this pairing seems full of promise. Kohli and Winget who will be seen in their new movie Phir Se apparently hit it off instantly on the sets of the movie. Pictures from the sets of the movie show the two enjoying a day of ice-skating amidst their busy schedule, which talks volumes about the comfort level they share. Director Kohli’s first acting stint with TV starlet Winget is surely something to look out for.

Amitabh Bachchan-Deepika Padukone: When two stalwarts come to work on a fun quirky movie, sharing a strong, comfortable chemistry is inevitable. So much so that Padukone has started calling Big B baba, which means father – as the senior actor is seen playing her father in their upcoming movie Piku. This unusual pairing has certainly set high expectations because of the sheer amount of talent they bring together on the silver screen.

Akshay Kumar-Jacqueline Fernandez: Though they are working with each other for the first time, both Kumar and Fernandez have been seen having a good time. She recently put up a quirky video true to her style, where he is congratulating her on reaching one million fans on Instagram. The two actors have been working on their film Brothers.

The three superstars launched the trailer of the movie on 25 March at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai, amidst a packed house that comprised not just media personnel, but also their parents, in yet another marketing innovation by team Piku

One of the most awaited films of 2015, Piku is a family comedy drama. The trailer was every bit a glimpse into the unconventional and quirky story, all told in signature Shoojit Sircar style.
