  • How Amazon Prime Video is winning in the Indian market

How Amazon Prime Video is winning in the Indian market

KOLKATA: It is not easy to gain a spot in the ever-expanding streaming map of India. All major international players have set their eyes on the Indian market but Amazon Prime Video has started the innings with a good score. The streaming service has seen good adoption and traction in India on the back of its deep library within three years of its launch. Amazon global CEO Jeff Bezos said earlier this year that they have decided to double down the investment here.

In the second part of APOS 2020, Amazon Prime Video India director and country general manager Gaurav Gandhi and  Amazon Prime Video India content director and head Vijay Subramaniam spoke about its secret to success.

The Prime members who also subscribe to the video service of the e-commerce giant renew their membership at a higher rate and engage more, as Gandhi said. Earlier, Amazon boss Bezos also stated that Prime Video is performing better in India than anywhere else in the world.

As Gandhi mentioned, even during the crisis period of the last four-five months, it has kept its content flow normal yet. One of its most popular show Mirzapur’s second season is also coming on the platform very soon.

“We are excited about the success of the Prime Video in India. Its adoption is very broad which is making India one of the fastest-growing markets of this service. Everything we look at Amazon is customer backward, just as the case in Prime video. We just look at what customers want and work backward from that,” Gandhi shared one of the main reasons for the success.

Gandhi attributed the depth of its content library with movies, direct-to-digital releases, premium original content, stand-up comedy as another reason for the success. According to him, Prime Video stands as a truly local service with content in nine languages and user interface in three languages. He also noted that the service focuses highly on experience. Rather than only focusing on access, it also tries to make the process of joining and viewing easier with a seamless experience, on any kind of device and all payment options.

“When we set up the Indian originals team led by Aparna Purohit little over four years ago, we were very clear from the get-go that we have to understand the nuances that are lacking in the kind of stories that customers want to watch and enjoy. Then one truth emerged that high quality cinematically envisioned shows were much sought after,” Subramaniam said. He went on to add that customers were also seeking authentic storytelling. Authenticity, quality of the story, the importance of time, experiments with content have helped the service to build a rich roster of content.

Adding to Subramaniam’s viewpoint, Gandhi said that the variety of content on the back shows like Mirzapur, Inside Edge, Bandish Bandits, Patal Lok gives consumers a different experience not only to Indian users but audience outside the country as well. “One of five customers who watch our Indian originals outside from India,” Gandhi highlighted. According to him, what continues to hold the OTT platform in a good state is its belief in carefully curated content.

Prime Video has always maintained a good library of films, even in local languages. During the first phase of the lockdown, the international streaming giant announced the premiere of seven Indian films across languages with circumstantial changes.

“It was an obvious decision from the beginning that we want to ensure that we provide the latest and greatest films along with a meaningful catalogue. What was important though, it was windowing. We realised that customers of these films, not only they wnt the films but to be able to access them early. We probably pioneered the switching of windows. We disrupted the traditional methodology of theatrical satellite and finally all other windows going from theatrical straight to digital before satellite happened, that was a big meaningful shift for our customers,” Subramaniam said.

Along with other originals and direct-to-digital releases, Prime Video has been able to keep consumers engaged during the pandemic. It has seen very strong growth in the number of content viewed by customers, a number of customers joining and enjoying the service.

  • Where Mike Hopkins is taking Amazon Prime Video

Where Mike Hopkins is taking Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Studios SVP Mike Hopkins is a 30-year vet old in streaming veteran, having overseen the developed of products such as  BTN2GO and Fox Now as head of Fox distribution and later led Hulu on a rapid growth path as its CEO. He spent a short stint at Sony Pictures Television Networks as its chairman before being lured away by Jeff Bezos to lead Prime Video just before the pandemic hit the world.

Hopkins is quite charged up about the opportunity that lies ahead with Prime Video. Speaking at APOS he said that Amazon has 150 million plus Prime members globally and Prime Video is a key driver of the service.

Hopkins expressed that growth for Prime Video lies primarily in international territories. “Before I arrived the company had made some really smart investments in serving customers around the world,” he said. “And we intend to double down on that investment over the next couple of years. We will continue to invest in local and global content and that is very critical,”

Most of the investments are going towards creating originals in 15 of the 200 markets Prime Video is available outside the US. “People in many countries have an affinity to US content,” Hopkins added. “But increasingly customers also want to see stories about them their culture and issues written and produced by people in their countries and played out by actors who look like and speak like them. Our teams have been building a home for talent and attracting the top creators all over the world.”

The content acquisition teams, Hopkins revealed are also  making smart bets and doubling down on investments in acquiring SVOD content and TVOD catalogues. This apart, Hopkins, stated that Amazon’ sports team has also been inventing and reinventing spots, taking bets in properties and that is going to increase going forward.

Hopkins went on to add that the second big opportunity for Amazon Prime Video lies in improving customer experience. “We have probably the most complicated business model of the SVoD players, so that makes the customer experience more important for us,” he expressed.

He revealed that members can look forward to improvements in how they can navigate and use the service over the next year or two. “Customers can rent and buy movies and TV shows and they can also subscribe to  TV channels in many markets,” he highlighted. “Making it easier for them to understand what’s what and how they can get to the content is important and we will prioritise this along with content investments.”

He explained that he sees Prime Video offering a variety of content to its users, right from the SVOD content to TVOD to channels. “We want to offer them a one-stop-shop for their entertainment needs and (adding) channels is going to be a major focus for us.”

Hopkins stated the pandemic has not impacted its pipeline of content going forward. “We have about 40 shows in various stages of production,” he said. “We have a very deep library, we have licensed content. We have a lot of originals. We are going to launch the second season of The Voice and several other shows. But what we will see is a slowdown in terms of premieres in the first half of next year. The thinning of these shows will be more than made up by the TVOD content in movies and the channels members can subscribe to.”

He pointed out that Amazon Prime Video had gone in early into India as an SVOD service  and the way forward is becoming be super aggressive in the market from an originals. “We will have more than a dozen originals in each of the markets we are investing in by next year or so” he revealed. “And India is one of our priority markets.”

  • Netflix’s reinvigorated strategy for the next decade & India’s growing role

Netflix’s reinvigorated strategy for the next decade & India’s growing role

KOLKATA: Netflix wants to be the ‘best friend’, the primary choice of streamers across the world. While the streaming rat race is picking up internationally, Netflix is moving fast and expanding its content mix. It has moved on from only focusing on scripted episodic originals to also strive to replicate the success of premium TV in unscripted content, movies and animation. This, for Netflix, is the “next decade” of opportunities.

“We are so excited about the next decade of Netflix growth. We've definitely got a good start, but the opportunity across the next decade is just amazing for us. It's a lot international but I couldn't be more excited about it, and it will be great to have some help as we expand the globe, and I'm looking forward to that.  And to be totally clear, I'm in for a decade. And as co-CEO, it's two of us full time. It's not like a part-time deal. So it's definitely broadening the management team and help us grow even faster over the next 10 years,” Netflix co-founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings said as he named chief content officer Ted Sarandos as co-CEO.

Is Netflix in the next ten years the same compared to the last years? Hastings said in an earnings call after Q2 results that it has got a good model for the next ten years and just need to make it better. Netflix has historically spent most of its money on content but it is also working on making the service better, more user-friendly with a smarter UI.

“A couple of years ago, we only had a premium TV. And now to be really good in movies, to be really good in unscripted, emerging in animation, very strong in local language shows and series, I mean it's an incredible expansion that Ted has pulled off over the last five years. So think of it as just us doing more of that at a higher scale and pleasing more people,” he added.

Sarandos, the content king at Netflix said that if the platform aims to be the go-to destination for entertainment, it would not be a smart move to ignore the area of programming that dominates broadcast. Hence, it has been dabbling in unscripted reality. Notably, Netflix has significantly spoken more of animated content in the last one year which is the best weapon of its rival Disney+.

Hastings said that the content team is coming up with some big bets. “We want to have so many hits that when you come to Netflix, you can just go from hit to hit to hit and never have to think about any of those other services, right? We want to be like your primary, your best friend, the one you turn to. And of course, occasionally, there's Hamilton and you're going to go to someone else's service for an extraordinary film. But for the most part, we want to be the one that just always please you with the convenience, simple and easy choice,” Hastings said.

Despite leading the streaming revolution, competition is going to be the biggest challenge for the pioneer in the next ten years with deep-pocket rivals like Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max and Peacock having entered the market. Even more of the traditional networks are now pulling off content from Netflix for their digital arms causing a big dent in the library as the evergreen popular shows still attract eyeballs.

As the US market gets overcrowded with large-scale contenders, Netflix is going to focus highly on international markets. “When I think about what our future is and I think it's just a tremendous next stage of growth that we will see mostly coming from outside the United States. So think of more and more employees outside the United States, more productions, more operations happening outside the US and hopefully, many, many more members outside the US. This is an opportunity to lean in just a little bit more, be proactive and drive a little bit more alignment across those activities where we think alignment will benefit the business and push the optimisation of those activities a little bit more,” Netflix COO and chief product officer Gregory Peters said.

Meanwhile, Netflix has already set its eye on the largest growing OTT market – India.  It set an audacious goal of getting its next 100 million subscribers from the country. This is a tougher market to crack given the local rivals alongside Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video. In the last quarter, it has added less than three million paid subscribers from the entire APAC region. However, despite the slow growth, Netflix is increasing investment here. A few days ago, it announced 17 new local originals. As the Netflix bosses embrace the excitement for the coming 10 years, reinvigorated content strategy and international expansion can save it from the dwindling position of once-undisputed streaming king and definitely there will more spending to get Indian audiences.

  • SonyLIV 2.0 seeks to refresh through new-age, youthful vibe

SonyLIV 2.0 seeks to refresh through new-age, youthful vibe

KOLKATA: While the lockdown demotivated many, it did not stop OTT platform SonyLIV from taking a bold stop. With new content in-store, SonyLIV is reviving itself as SonyLIV 2.0. A new team which took up the role to lead the platform last year has reimagined the transformation. As the streaming war in India continues with Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5 and MX Player being leading names, the rebranding is likely to give leverage.

“We wanted to become more new-age, youthful, user-friendly. That was one thing which we wanted to say through the new logo design. Secondly, the V of LIV also resembles the tick mark. So, the entire design came from the fact that this is the right choice of entertainment,” said SPN digital business marketing head Aman Srivastava. The new logo emphasises the ‘liv’ part in a bright yellow colour in contrast to a colourful background with streaks of purple, blue and orange.

Srivastava said they are informing existing customers about new content through notifications and emailers. Moreover, there is a way to interact with these consumers on the app itself. Apart from that, he adds that SonyLIV has been present on all digital and audiovisual platforms which provides it with the right kind of target audience including its network channels, major platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. He added that SonyLIV was always well-played from a distribution point of view as its available across devices, platforms and telecom players.

He is also confident about customer retention even after the lockdown easing as it will have new content every week. Moreover, he added that live sports has also started and the sports fans are coming in and there might even be some more new sports content. As television shootings have resumed, catch-up content will also come back. Together, original, live sports, catch-up content will keep subscribers engaged.

Just after the launch, SPN digital business and SET content head Ashish Golwalkar said that it would start the journey with Hindi and English content. Although the English library has always been heavy of the streaming platform, it has now collaborated with the best creative minds of the country for good local content.

“Currently, we are starting with Hindi and English content. In English content, we have content from Sony Pictures Television, our own studio. We have acquired some content from ITV and NBC. We have an existing Lionsgate library. We have a rich rapporteur of English content. Now, we are launching with Your Honour. We will launch five shows in the next two months.  We have content planned for Hindi, Marathi and English. We have very enriching content from TVF as well,” he said.

Golwalkar admitted that the space is highly competitive but even then he feels there is a lot of space for content in certain genres like comedy or content that is Indian in approach. According to him, there is not much content in the genre. The online content that is coming from India is revolving around crime, thriller and dark subjects. There are a lot of other stories that can be told and that will allow SonyLIV to create a niche for itself. He added that they would be launching around 15-20 originals in the next 12 months. Some of the content can be dubbed in major regional languages in the coming days.

The first original with which the rebranded platform started the journey was Your Honor, Created by Applause Entertainment. Deepak Segal, the content head of Applause Entertainment said that it is one of format among six which were acquired from Israel. The show was first adapted and produced by it and then SonyLIV was approached. It has three shows coming up on SonyLIV.

  • Cinemas stare at empty halls, slow recovery post Covid2019

Cinemas stare at empty halls, slow recovery post Covid2019

NEW DELHI: The movie industry has found itself cornered for the first time in history. Cinema halls stayed shuttered since March and it might take a while for the footfall to get back to normal. Meanwhile, business revenue has come to a grinding halt and producers are keen on releasing films on OTT platforms.

Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana's Gulabo Sitabo, Vidya Balan's Shakuntala Devi are premiering on Amazon Prime Video whereas Anurag Kashyap's movie, Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai has released on Netflix. Even regional players are releasing their content on digital platforms.

Until now, movies usually arrive on video streaming platforms only after running in cinemas for a few weeks. As per media reports, around 10,000 single-screen and 3000 multiplexes are closed and this shutdown is estimated to cost the Indian film industry Rs 984 crore in box office revenue.

As multiplex revenues have become null and producers are switching to video streaming platforms as an alternative option, the theatre industry is anxious about how to deal with the dire situation.

INOX Leisure Ltd CEO Alok Tandon says, “In these times of an unparalleled crisis, we want the entire ecosystem to show solidarity. We have also urged the producers and studios to wait for the theatres to resume operations and follow the globally prevalent cinematic windowing pattern as it has done wonders in terms of revenues for all the stakeholders, and allows the creators an opportunity to extract the best from all available mediums.”

He also shares, “The theatrical run has its own significance in the cinematic value chain as it remains the phase which generates the maximum revenues for the content creator. Besides fetching huge volumes of audiences, cinemas also contribute massively towards the experience economy."

However, even if the government eases the restrictions on the opening of theatres, there are lower chances of high footfalls in the coming months, as many people will not take the risk of going to movie theatres.

Tandon adds, “We are looking at the post-Covid2019 phase as another evolution with new processes and protocols and we are sure that we will take it into our stride. We are looking at the new normal soon going back to the old normal. Keeping in mind the insistence on social distancing, we will promote private screening as a consumer offering. We also look to leverage our massively successful loyalty program to innovate and curate customised offers which will
help us to bring them back to cinemas.”

Editor Complete Cinema and film trade analyst Atul Mohan says, “In my opinion, the first threat OTT brings is to GECs than theatres. Nothing can replace the charm of going to cinemas and OTT is dependent on hits at the cinemas. How many can afford to buy subscriptions from different players? We have so many satellite channels available at one subscription."

Upon asking, how he sees the situation evolving in the long run, he explains, “The situation is such that many can't hold their investments. The OTT players have deep pockets and hence, can afford to acquire some titles at a premium but even they have their limitations and budgets. This is just a matter of time but in the long run, every actor and producer wants their product to be showcased in cinemas.”

However, in this situation, OTT giants i.e. Netflix and Amazon have geared up to maintain their position and lure consumers through different genres of content. But, till when? Looking at the scenario, there’s a big question of when shooting will resume.

UFO Moviez JMD Kapil Agarwal shares, “India releases almost 140-150 movies in 22 languages in a month, a total of 1700 movies per year. Now, barely there are
100 movies which are ready, perhaps. The industry has only one month worth of content. If it will be released in the starting months, there will be a crunch of content.”

According to Agarwal, in the short run, it will hurt the exhibition industry but in the long run, there will be no impact, because films are made for big screens.

"Producers prefer to release their content on big screens instead of OTT platforms but people who have invested money are also under pressure and then the uncertainty of opening cinemas is also a challenge, so, they will opt for video platforms but that’s very temporary. The occupancy may go down to 30 -35 per cent and once cinemas open, it will take three to four months to get back to position,” he adds.

Most cinema chains are expecting to recover by the last quarter of the year. Time will tell if they can resume operations by then.
