    Y-Films readies new web series ‘Bang Baaja Baaraat;’ ropes in Lakme as sponsor

    MUMBAI: Buoyed by the success of its maiden web series called Man’s World, Yash Raj Films’ youth films wing – Y-Films is planning to launch its second web series – Bang Baaja Baaraat – on 4 November.

     

    The five-part series is directed by Anand Tiwari and written by Sumeet Vyas, Amritpal Bindra and Anand Tiwari. Bang Baaja Baaraat is thestory of two crazy families that come together for one mental wedding. 

     

    The cast includes Ali Fazal, Rajit Kapoor, Shernaz Patel, Gajraj Rao, Ayesha Raza, Neil Bhoopalam. The series will also mark the debut of YRF’s new find – Angira Dhar, who has also been signed up by the studio.

     

    Additionally, the studio has also brought on board Lakme as the sponsor of the series.

    ‘Fast and Furious 7’ to release in four languages across India

    MUMBAI: After the success of all its prequels, Universal Pictures India is all set to give Fast and Furious 7 a multi-lingual release in Indian theatres on 2 April, 2015.

     

    The movie will release across India in four languages namely English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

     

    Fast and Furious 7 will be more special for the franchise’s fans as this will be the last time they will see the late Paul Walker reprising his role as Brian O’Conner. It may be recalled that Walker died in a car crash last year.

     

    The movie also stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham and Indian actor Ali Fazal in a special appearance among others.

     

    The movie is directed by James Wan. The movie will also see Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Lucas Black, who will be joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey, Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell.

     

    Talking about the movie, Wan said, “When you’re making a bigger movie you have much bigger set pieces that require more time and more effort and more people. But I think the final product will surprise a lot of people. It’s the hardest film I’ve ever had to make but it’s also the one I’m proudest of.  I’m really proud of this film.”

    Ali Fazal replaces Arjun Rampal in Pooja Bhatt’s ‘Love Affair’

    MUMBAI: Actor Ali Fazal seems to be in the Bhatts’ favourite list. Last seen in Mahesh Bhatt’s Khamoshiyan, the actor has now replaced actor Arjun Rampal in filmmaker Pooja Bhatt’s next production venture titled Love Affair.

     

    Written and directed by Soni Razdan, the movie also stars Kalki Koechlin and Gulshan Devaiah along with Monica Dongra. It is jointly being produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and Bhatt’s Fish Eye Network.

     

    The film is about infidelity in marriage. Fazal will be playing the husband married to Koechlin, whereas Devaiah will be seen as the lover. Dongra is playing the role of the sister. It is rumoured that the film is loosely based on the real life case of 1959, probably the first passion crime reported in the pages of crime.

     

    Confirming the news Fazal said, “Yes I have been approached for the part in what I call the wee hours of the movie’s commencement, to replace Arjun Rampal due to some issues. I read the part and said yes immediately. It’s a challenging role, so I am still waking from the reality of it. Moreover I have already immersed in the looks and costumes of the film because there is very little time to prepare.”

    ‘Sonali Cable’… Stuck in time

    Sonali Cable must have been an idea in the mind of its writer-director, Charudutt Acharya, for a long time. Finally, he gets to realize it. Why is it an old thought? Because, cable turf wars are a story of the late 20th century. Providing cable connections was a totally money-and-muscle-wielding business when it started. There was nothing legal about it because there was no control. It just flourished.

    Cable was a way to watch various TV channels and infringing on other cable operators’ turf was the norm. It led to gang wars, murders and all such things that happen in other turf wars; after all, it was all about taking over a territory. But, Sonali Cable talks of a later stage. The stage when cable service was not limited to TV channels but also started providing internet connectivity.

    The story of Sonali Cable is a two-way fight between a multinational powerful company, Shining, owned by Anupam Kher, who wants to control all of Mumbai’s net connectivity which, according to him, will make whole of Mumbai vulnerable to him!! (There have been weirder ideas!) He has bought over all small time operators catering to few thousand connections and Mumbai is all his except for this one small time network provider, Sonali  (Rhea Chakraborty); her 3,000 connections stop him from controlling the entire city. For the convenience of the script, the national service provider, MTNL, is done away with, and so are other poor contenders owned by private companies. It is all about Kher, who walks in like East India Company, and takes over the net connectivity in the business capital of India.

    Then there are the emotional angles. Kher’s mother brought him up supplying khakhras in some Saurashtra village. Today, he swears by a khakhra but has no scruples otherwise. The film waits a long while for Sonali to get her own back. Which, by the way, totally ruins the latter half of the film. The shortcomings and liberties notwithstanding, the film loses the plot post-interval.

    Kher takes over Mumbai: just about every product is his, and just about every politician is owned by him. But this is the computer era as well as spy camera era. So, like all recent films where the villain ends up blabbering in front of a hidden camera, Kher complies too!

    The problem with this film is that the makers, and especially the writer, take the audience for granted. Can anybody monopolise Mumbai? Especially its net connectivity? While some ideas are good, some are farfetched. Also, the film has a Mumbai-Marathi flavour and a generous use of local slang words, which will not be understood by everyone. The film has some good songs. Direction shows promise given a better script (which is also by the director here).

    The story revolves around Rhea, a slum bred independent girl running her cable network with an opportunist politician, Smita Jaykar, whose son, Ali Fazal, is Rhea’s childhood love. Rhea does well except when using Marathi slang. Ali Fazal is getting better with each film. Raghav Juyal is a natural. Anupam Kher does one of his quirky characters with élan. Jaykar does well.

    Sonali Cable is out of tune with time and, otherwise too, goes haywire in the second half. Faces poor prospects.

    ‘Bobby Jasoos’…open and shut case

    MUMBAI: Bobby Jasoos is a curious mix of a light film, a romantic film, and a Muslim family social drama while also packing in a bit of suspense.

    Vidya Balan belongs to a traditional Muslim family from Hyderabad but her interests are not very traditional. She wants to become a private detective. When she seeks a job at an established detective agency, she is turned down. She then decides to start her own agency right opposite this agency. Her assignments are from fellow Muslim men and women from her neighbourhood, a dense Muslim locality.

     One of her clients is Ali Fazal; every time his family wants him to get married and choose a girl for him, he asks Vidya, Bobby Jasoos, to find some negative thing about the girl and to convey that to his parents so the marriage is put off. However, these are petty assignments earning her in the low thousands. What is more, she has to use the tea stall of a friend, Akash Dahiya, for her meetings with clients and has to order tea so that he gets some business for letting her use his joint. Her other sidekick is Prasad Barve, who runs a cyber cafe in the area.

    But Vidya has a problem at home. While her mother, Supriya Pathak Kapur, loves her like any mother would love her ward, her father is upset about her way of life and refuses even to talk to her. That is the family drama part of the film.

    While working on her petty cases, Vidya suddenly gets her big break. Kiran Kumar, a very stern and suspicious looking person, walks into her life and offers her an assignment with wad of currency as well as an expense account. All she is given is a name and age of a girl and a birthmark on her palm to trace her. With funny trial and error methods, Vidya manages to find her.

    With this success follows another assignment at double the fees. She has to find another girl, again with only a name, age and a birthmark. Vidya is elated and wants to share her success with her father, but he will have nothing of it. For him, this is not how a traditional Muslim girl of 30 behaves.

    Somehow, Vidya succeeds in tracking this girl too through the pretext of carrying out a screen-test for a TV serial. And, now, Kiran Kumar is ready to give her a third and last case. She has to find a young man and is given his name but this time there is no birth mark. Only hint is that the boy has a toe missing in his right leg. But, by this time, Vidya is convinced Kiran Kumar is not a good man and lays a trap to find out his background. This is also the time to end the cat and mouse game and open the cards.

    Bobby Jasoos is basically a Vidya Balan show in toto. Her various getups are well done but the real Vidya pops out of each of them. But what is good about the casting is that, in the supporting cast, the film has a host of veterans in Kiran Kumar, Rajendra Gupta, Zarina Wahab, Supriya Pathak, Tanve Azmi and an effective Arjan Bajwa. The veterans live up to their reputation while the rest of the supporting star cast also does well. Ali lives up to the confidence of casting him.

    But as Vidya’s two lives are juxtaposed: that of family and her love to play detective, the film wavers, loses grip. The suspense created around Kiran Kumar and Bajwa shadowing Vidya turn out to be damp squibs. Gupta and Vidya’s equation, which remained ice cold throughout, changes in a few minutes’ worth of melodrama, which is cliché. Thankfully, there is little of music to slow the pace further.

     With Hyderabad as backdrop and a Muslim background, the release of Bobby Jasoos bang in the middle of the month of Ramzan shows utter lack of wisdom. 

    ‘Lekar Hum Deewana Dil’… going nowhere

    Lekar Hum Deewana Dil is a campus love story. There is a usual group of a bunch of friends, which includes the lead pair. The bunch generally has a good time because they are never in a class room but hang around the campus all day. The hero sports a guitar around his neck on daily basis. So what’s new?

    Armaan Jain and Deeksha Seth are college friends and they are in love but not quite aware of the fact, while to rest of their friends it is obvious that there is more than mere friendship. These two realise they are in love only when they have guzzled a few bottles of beer. Every love story needs a villain so in their case, the villain is the north-south divide. Deeksha is a south Indian and her father believes in maintaining traditions.

    Besides his guitar, Armaan also owns a bike, mandatory for any college going young man in films! When Deeksha’s father is determined to marry her off to a suitor from his own community, she and Armaan decide to elope. Their first stop is Goa where they take shelter at Armaan’s uncle’s place. Soon the uncle betrays them and informs his family. The couple has to flee in hurry. And, of all the places, they land up in Maoist territory! Meanwhile, they have found the time to go through a temple wedding.

    Their stay at the Maoist camp is used to force in an item song and put on test the romance of the two immature people. Their love snaps under pressure and the bad circumstances they have landed in. The couple now hate each other as much as they loved earlier. Back in Mumbai, the divorce procedure starts at a family court. Sessions with a marriage counselor don’t work as both start fighting at the very sight of the other.

    As the divorce process is in progress, both embark on a great nostalgia montage of their good times together. Such montages have saved many broken romances in so many films so far so why should it not work here too? After all, love stories are all about happy endings. This is no Romeo and Juliet.

    Despite launching a new pair, with the hero much touted as the grandson of late Raj Kapoor, the film seems to be more about saving money rather than spending on it. With two new faces, there is nobody in the supporting cast whom one may have seen before. To add to that, even the promotion leaves much to be desired.

    The story is woven around a very flimsy plot. Screenplay is poor and so is the direction. With a song being forced in at every excuse, just a single number, Khalifa….. seems to have worked with youth. Rest of the aspects are below average. As for performances, Armaan is certainly not an actor; he is too raw and chocolaty. Deeksha, because of her south experience, does better.

    Baat Bann Gayi comedy on doubles being released with double holidays

    The romantic comedy Baat Bann Gayi, directed by Shuja Ali and starring among others Ali Fazal and Anisa with Gulsan Grover and Amrita Raichand, is to be released on a gazette holiday, 11 October when Dussehra and Eid-Ul-Azha coincide.

     

    With the punch line, ‘Double Trouble, Double Mazaa’, producer Sayed Asif Jah said his film is being released on this date as no other filmmaker has dared to release his film at that time.

     

    “Anil Sharma’s Singh Sahab The Great has joined this league as they have shifted their release date from11 October to November end. Incidentally, Balaji Films has postponed the release of Ragini MMS 2 from this given date thus paving way for Baat Bann Gayi to be a clear winner,” he added.

     

    He said, “The year 2013 has been Bollywood’s most successful year so far, which have had many films shifting their release dates to hit the silver screen on a suitable week. Almost every week there have been four to five new releases and in some weeks the numbers have gone to as high as ten. Picking a good release date has been a big task for corporate houses and movie makers.

     

    Considering the mammoth success of Chennai Express was released on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and is still running to packed houses. “We have decided to release our film, Baat Bann Gayi, on 11 October, as there are two events Dussehra and Bakri Eid – and we would like to capitalise on this opportunity as well,” he added.

     

    Baat Bann Gayi is presented by Jaypeeco India and Vibhu Agarwal. The movie is produced by Sayed Asif Jah and Megha Agarwal and is directed by Shuja Ali. The film is a production of Jaypeeco Infotainment in association with ASR Media. Baat Bann Gayi, stars Ali Fazal, Gulsan Grover, Anisa, Amrita Raichand, Razzak Khan and Akshay Singh.

     

    As in Gulzar’s 1982 film ‘Angoor’, Baat Bann Gayi is based on Shakespeare’s ‘Comedy of Errors’ enriched with the classical plot of ‘duals’, depicting the comic situations when lookalike of characters encounter each other. Unexpected, hilarious and utterly humorous situations arise because of mistaken identity. Lots of trouble and confusions turn the flow of narrative into a hilarious, thriller goof-filled with madness, surprises, and stomach aching humorous situations.

    Sonali Cable: Apun Kabhi Offline Nahin Jaate

    MUMBAI: SCIL (Super Cassettes Industries Limited), Ramesh Sippy Entertainment and NextGen Entertainment have announced the release of their film Sonali Cable on 3 January, 2014. This is the second collaboration of SCIL and Ramesh Sippy Entertainment after the critically acclaimed Nautanki Saala.

     

    Sonali Cable is a David versus Goliath story, in the thick of the cable internet turf war in Mumbai. An ordinary girl puts her love, life and survival at stake, when she and her ragtag team come in the way of the expansion plans of India’s largest corporation. The film wants to establish the growing corporate crushing small businesses without any scope for co existence.

     

    The film is written and directed by debutant Charudutt Acharya with an ensemble cast that includes Rhea Chakraborty, Ali Fazal, Swanand Kirkire and Raghav Juyal (aka Crockroaxz), supported by accomplished veterans Smita Jayakar and Anupam Kher.

     

    The film features a varied soundtrack including tracks by Devi Shri Prasad, Ankit Tiwari, Mikey McCleary and Falak, with lyrics by Kausar Munir.
