Life OK to reward good content through ‘Life OK Now Awards’

    Updated: 09:50 PM

MUMBAI: In the age of instant noodles and even instant sex, why should entertainers from the world of music, television and films wait for as long as a year or even six months for their 15 seconds of fame? It was this thought that led to the conceptualization of the ‘Life OK Now Awards’, a partnership between Star Plus’ sister channel, Life OK, and BIG Productions.

Billed as the country’s first instant awards celebrating excellence in the field of film, television and music, they will be held every month, with the first edition scheduled for 31 May and film star Akshay Kumar roped in as its face. According to Life OK general manager Ajit Thakur, “In the events space, we went ahead and did the Screen Awards, which we are quite happy about, but we always thought of them as a product that we got and took to the next level. By contrast, this initiative is our own innovation.”

Further explaining the thought behind the awards, Thakur said, “It’s not that Bollywood releases movies only three or four times a year. It’s the same like television; we keep launching shows every now and then and the same goes for music. So this is where the whole insight came from that if there is so much excellent work happening week after week and month after month, why should the celebration, rewards and coming together happen only once or twice a year? That was the basic premise on which we worked with Big Productions and turned the whole thing on its head.”

The ‘Life OK Now Awards’ have been conceptualized by Life OK and will be produced by Big Productions along with 92.7 BIG FM as radio partner.

Thakur recalled that when RBNL CEO Tarun Katial and he met a month ago to discuss something interesting, they never imagined that 30 days of thinking would get such a WOW reaction from the industry. With Life OK planning to get at least six sponsors for the awards and huge amounts of money required every month, are clients ready for this? “We have been pitching it only for the last 15 days because the earlier 15 days went into finalizing the idea. We have four-five powered by and associate sponsors. We are in the middle of locking the main sponsor,” said Thakur.

The channel has got wild stone as it’s powered by sponsor. Though Life OK officials chose to remain tight lipped about financial details of the show, an industry source revealed that the channel is expecting close to anywhere between Rs 80,000 to Rs 100,000 per 10 seconds slot.

The ‘Now’ awards encompass film, music and TV, and are not restricted to television alone. “It is not a television award show at all. It is primarily a Bollywood show and will happen every month unless we feel that there is a particular month in the year where there are not enough film releases. We may skip say July while during Diwali, we may do something much better depending on the scale of releases,” said Thakur.

This month’s shoot will be shot on 21 May at Reliance Studio and will telecast on 31 May at 8 pm. Significantly, these awards will see no involvement of the jury save for short-listing movies. Even the Life OK shows that will be chosen will be purely on the basis of ratings. While seven categories will remain constant from month to month, Life OK plans to introduce newer categories every month, depending on the film releases during that month. For the first edition of the awards, voting will go live from 15 May.

There will be categories like best actor (male and female), best movie, best picturised song and Life OK hero of the month and many more. Each subsequent edition of the awards will have a different face. “It is a great platform for these actors to promote their movies. Otherwise, they only get to promote their films on reality shows. This way, every month, they will have a platform to promote their films and even the music,” said Big Productions business head Rajesh Chadha.

Speaking of movies nominated for the ‘Now’ awards, would ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade films qualify? “Television is a mass platform. We also want to promote experimental content. I don’t categorize films as ‘B’ or ‘C’ grade but each film which has got noticed by the audience will be taken into consideration. Remember, small films need all such platforms as compared to big films in terms of budget,” said Thakur.

Wouldn’t there be a saturation point with so many awards flooding the market? “Depends on how you see it. If you look at celebration of good content, talking, showcasing, presenting good content and interacting with your favorite stars; I don’t think there is any problem then. Look at the content on your channel and look at the content on your online platform, look at the content in the extension of the newspapers, every day, there is content around Bollywood, television and music,” said Thakur. “I don’t think there will be saturation. Today, supplements are growing thicker by the day because people want to know about things. For me, if there is so much content and so much curiosity and so much engagement with respect to entertainment, then why would you postpone the celebration, rewards and recognition? Many people work hard to make one film and by January next year, with 500 films, the smaller films get lost. I don’t think there is any saturation.”

Regarding the association with BIG FM, Thakur said, “I think the 45 stations are great to take the message across. They are our only media coverage; we have not roped in any other media partner.”

Are the ‘Now’ awards just an experiment? “We don’t give up easily on something which we are quite excited about. We are not going to give up on the experiment for sure.  But I also think it is not going to be an overnight success, so we have to be different in every way. It will take time for us to build it but we will be on it,” said Thakur. “Both the industry feedback and advertisers’ feedback has been excellent. People have come and told us they want to sponsor from July to October.”

Starting with the first edition, every installment will be shot around the middle of the month and telecast over the last weekend of the month. Viewers can avail exclusive content by giving a missed call on 1800 270 8701 or downloading the Life OK Now Awards app from the Android Store or Google Play or by logging into www.lifeok.com/NowAwards

  • The show this season will be a blockbuster: Raj Nayak

The show this season will be a blockbuster: Raj Nayak

MUMBAI: Colors’ adrenaline pumping reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi, is all set to return after a hiatus of nearly two years.

The fifth season of the show will premiere on 22 March and will be aired every weekend at 9pm. Season five will transport 15 celebrity contestants to the dense forests of South Africa, where they will be seen battling untold odds, performing high-octane stunts and generally overcoming their deepest fears.

With a tagline that reads ‘Darr Ka Blockbuster’ and stunt maestro-action filmmaker Rohit Shetty as host, Colors hopes to raise the bar even further with the upcoming season of its show.

The daredevils participating in this edition include Ranvir Shorey, Nikitin Dheer, Mugdha Godse, Dayanand Shetty, Rajniesh Duggal, Rochelle Maria Rao, Gauhar Khan, Kushal Tandon, Gurmeet Choudhary, Debina Bonnerjee, Karanvir Bohra, Teejay Sidhu, Pooja Gor, dancer Salman Khan and Geeta Tandon.

The channel has roped in Idea Cellular as the presenting sponsor, Gionee smartphone as the powered-by sponsor, and Mahindra & Mahindra, Amul Macho, Adjavis and Bajaj Electricals as associate sponsors.

Colors officials chose to remain tight-lipped about the financial details of the show. Industry sources reveal that the channel could be charging anywhere close to Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per 10 seconds of air time on the show.  “Moreover, the channel is spending close to Rs 2.5 crore per episode,” reveals the source.

In terms of the total ad revenue, the industry source adds, “Colors may well end up being in the black on this loss leading show as I believe the total revenue from advertising will tot up to about Rs 30 crore-35 crore this season.”  An advertising and promotional war chest of Rs 3 crore-5 crore has been kept aside for marketing Khatron Ke Khiladi

So will season five be bigger than its predecessor? “With every season of Khatron Ke Khiladi, our aim is to raise the entertainment quotient and create edge-of-the-seat content to engage audiences’ week-after-week,” says Colors CEO Raj Nayak. “Be it contestant selection or programming and creative inputs, our teams ensure that viewers get the opportunity to witness the perfect amalgamation of action and entertainment as contestants push their boundaries to face their primal fears.”

And why was Akshay Kumar replaced with Shetty this time around? “We share a great working relationship with Akshay Kumar, who hosted the last season, and it was a great experience working with him. This season was however about having a stunt visionary, who would not only drive contestants to perform better, but also be the architect of the stunts.  We wanted the host to own the stunts this time around,” reasons Nayak. “Who other than the stunt maestro himself (Shetty) to take on the mantle of hosting an action-packed adrenaline-charged show like Khatron Ke Khiladi?”

With Shetty as stunt architect, Colors is looking to really push the envelope in that department. “Shetty will bring with him his own style of hosting and mannerisms that will add to the show’s entertainment quotient. Known for creating larger than life action sequences, he has entertained the masses with his films and I have no doubts that the show this season will be a blockbuster,” says Nayak.

What made Endemol and Colors retain Cape Town, South Africa as the location of the shoot? In an earlier interview with indiantelevision.com, CEO of Endemol India, Deepak Dhar said that the South African team was well-equipped to come up with the kind of high-calibre stunts required this season.  Dhar described it as a ‘really mean season’ with high- level stunts and animals coming on the show as well. He said it would be packed with edgy content and explore some of the most interesting locales of South Africa, be it stunts involving choppers, cars, bikes or even underwater.

An observer states that both Endemol and Colors would have found it quite difficult to make it as edgy as they did if the filming was to be done in India.

    More on season five:

Unlike earlier seasons, it will not see partners holding contestants’ hands while performing some of the most challenging tasks. Also, each episode will feature three types of stunts performed by three sets of contestants.

    A 360-degree approach to KK5

Colors is betting big on season five of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Not surprisingly, the channel has devised a 360-degree marketing and digital campaign to engage with its audience.

It has designed an overall outreach programme including over 4,500 spots on television, 75 plus editions of key print, over 9,000 radio spots, OOH covering 70 cities, integrations for 17 days across 17 stations of Radio Mirchi, and DTH imprints to grab the attention of its target audience.

To begin with, distinctive black and yellow hoardings have been placed at various consumer touch points across 70 cities in the country one week prior to the launch, to send out the key message of the show.

On the cards is an adventure-based mobile game called ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi – The Game’, designed by Gameshastra Solutions, which can be downloaded on iOS and android platforms.

On Twitter, the show has a dedicated page called @KKKonColors, which currently has over 4,000 followers. The Facebook page has more than 627,000 likes. There’s constant chatter about the contestants, trivia about the shoot and South Africa, bloopers and more to keep social media buzzing about the show.

Colors has partnered with Radio Mirchi as its exclusive radio partner, who will engage listeners over a period of 17 days through 17 stations across the country. Radio Mirchi will review the show’s blockbuster opening on its premium property ‘Blockbuster Budhwar’ along with small segments during the day called ‘Meri Life Ka Blockbuster’ that will highlight the karnamas of real-life khiladis in the entertainment industry.

  • Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar to dance on Honey Singh’s tunes

Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar to dance on Honey Singh’s tunes

MUMBAI: They are the two heartthrobs of Bollywood and when they come together they create magic. We are talking about Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Since the time they did David Dhawan’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi together in 2004, the two have made a great jodi on silver screen.

The duo is set to come together for a special item song by Yo Yo Honey Singh in Grazing Goats Pictures’ Fugly.  The actors, as they rekindle their bromance, will be seen flexing their dance moves with four newcomers.

After Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, the duo came together in Shirish Kunder’s Jaan-E-Man in 2006, followed by a track in Tees Maar Khan in 2011.

It is being said that Salman, who is a good friend of Ashvini Yardi, the co-partner in Grazing Goats Pictures, is doing this as a friendly gesture towards the lady.

Fugly is a coming-of-age drama directed by Kabir Sadanand. It is the story of four friends: Dev (Anil Kapoor’s nephew Mohit Marwah), Devi (grandniece of Sayed Jaffery, Kiara Advani), Gaurav (Olympic medalist Boxer Vijender Singh) and Aditya (Slumdog Millionaire actor Arfi Lamba) and how this carefree bunch, at the threshold of their lives, get caught in a ‘Fugly’ incident, which sucks them slowly into the big bad world of corruption, politics and the real society in the capital.

The film is set to release on 16 May 2014.
