  • Sidelined by Bollywood, Marathi content will be redefined by Planet Marathi, says Akshay Bardapurkar

Sidelined by Bollywood, Marathi content will be redefined by Planet Marathi, says Akshay Bardapurkar

Thiruvananthapuram: The Marathi entertainment industry has often failed to get due recognition, despite producing quality content for years now, thanks to the overshadowing glitz and glamour of Bollywood, according to Planet Marathi’s founder Akshay Bardapurkar.

Planet Marathi was therefore launched in 2017 by Bardapurkar, as a nodal digital platform to not only connect Marathi speaking audiences across the world, but also redefine the reach and popularity of quality Marathi content.

Celebrating its fourth anniversary, and through the course of these years, Bardapurkar and his team have successfully emerged as one of the most noted production houses in the Marathi industry. In 2020, Amitabh Bachchan made his debut in Marathi filmdom with the movie, ‘AB Aani CD’ under the banner of Planet Marathi. The company has also launched an initiative named ‘Planet Talent’, with the aim of according due recognition to and highlighting supremely talented artistes from Maharashtra.

Talking about Bollywood under shadowing Marathi content, Bardapurkar said, “Marathi filmmakers are among the best, and globally renowned for their work. The Marathi industry was undermined due to several factors. The problem was that Marathi always lacked the branding and packaging, which the other regional players like in Tamil and Telugu, have never refrained from. They have created the stardom which is a requisite (component of industry). They branded their products very well. This is what we intend to do by creating varied content in Marathi. We are sure that we will be able to match up to Bollywood or even any other regional languages in the future.”

Bardapurkar, in association with actor Pushkar Shrotri and music composer Aditya Oak, plans to launch an OTT platform exclusively dedicated to Marathi content. The OTT platform was originally scheduled to launch in May, but the second wave of the Corona virus of 2019 resulted in the launch of Planet Marathi OTT being postponed. Despite tight competition from mega players like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+Hotstar, Bardapurkar is quite confident about the Marathi OTT platform being able to affirm its position in the market through the strategic use of unique content for audiences.

“Technology is at the highest level today. Language is not a barrier on OTT platforms. Films released on OTT are considered world movies, just like we watch Latin, Spanish, and Korean films. I believe Marathi films with English subtitles will attract global audiences. We have (a large pool) of talent, and it is necessary to market it wisely. However, we should make sure that the content is crisper,” added Bardapurkar.

An official announcement regarding the re-scheduled launch of the OTT platform is expected to be made in the near future.

Bardapurkar revealed that he does not visualize a target audience while creating content, and emphatically states that content offered by Planet Marathi will cater to the needs of people, irrespective of age demographics.

Apart from creating original movies, Planet Marathi also plans to launch many non-fiction shows, and games. According to Bardapurkar, Planet Marathi’s OTT platform will not just be an OTT platform uploaded with movies, but instead, it will be a super-platform offering non-fiction shows ranging from music contests to cookery shows.

Bardapurkar revealed that his company has successfully laid the foundation, over the past four years, for the future to witness a creative movement that will open up a world of high-quality Marathi content for global audiences.

  • Industry welcomes I&B ministry’s guidelines to restart Film, TV and OTT production

Industry welcomes I&B ministry’s guidelines to restart Film, TV and OTT production

MUMBAI: Yesterday, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar released a comprehensive set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) aimed at the resumption of production for film, television, and OTT originals. The announcement came in as a sigh of relief for many in the industry. The SOPs are in line with the protocols followed across the globe, which also specifies safe distances on shooting locations, in edit rooms, studios, and others. It includes rules on sanitization, fumigation, face masks, and availability of PPE kits. The SOPs also mention the need for an appointment of an on-set Covid2019 coordinator. Javadekar said, “Today we are laying out standard operating procedures as per the international experience and with the consultation of the health ministry and the home ministry.”

He further explained that contact minimisation is at the core of the SOPs. It will be ensured by minimal physical contact and sharing of props and PPEs for hairstylists and make-up artists, among others. Javadekar also highlighted that the characters in front of the camera would be exempted from wearing masks. Making this announcement on Doordarshan Javadekar said that formulating SOP measures as part of the overall decision to revive economic activities. He added, “For the last six months, this industry had come to a standstill, and many people had lost their jobs. We hope all States will adopt these SOPs.”

For a detailed list of the SOPs, click here. In a special interaction with indiantelevision.com film producer, Ramesh Taurani said, “I think it is a very good step from the government. Shoots have already started, but now they can be done in other locations as well, as the new SOPs will benefit everyone. These are practical and manageable SOPs, and the film industry is very happy. Now things will happen at a macro level. As the film shooting has started workers, actors, technicians can start work with full protection. It is a good step towards restarting the economy, as more people will get employment. The announcement came from the central government, and now it is up to the respective state government to take it forward.” Apart from laying down the social distancing norms, the ministry has also asked the production houses to ensure extensive planning. It also states that physical distancing of at least six feet is to be followed as far as feasible at all locations at all times, while sitting, standing in queues, etc. FICCI official spokesperson said, "It is a welcome move and the industry has been looking forward to this. It will help open the industry in a phased manner with all the necessary precautions . We are looking forward to working with the government to ensure we get back to business with all the norms that have been put in place. This move from central government is the umbrella document for state governments to adopt so that there is basic uniformity across the country . This is one plan laid out by the central government for the state government to follow and they can add some important details as per the specific requirement." Aspects such as scenes, sequences, set-ups, camera locations, positions of various crew members, seating arrangements, food and catering arrangements, staggered meal timings, etc. shall be planned while giving due consideration to physical distancing norms. According to the guidelines, measures shall be taken by the production team to involve a minimum number of cast and crew members during the shoot. IFTPC chairman TV wing JD Majethia shares, “It is a very welcome move. We all have been waiting for this for a very long time. It is a relief that the centre has eased out the restrictions. As shooting is now allowed across India, it would be easier for film, television, and OTT shows to shoot in different locations and studios, which was difficult to do earlier. Many people will get their employment back, hopefully in Maharashtra. If trains are allowed from next month onwards, a lot of people will get their jobs back.” He further added that the guidelines laid down by the I&B ministry are more detailed, and they have included a lot of aspects. “The measures are clear in nature. Everyone will know what to do in these circumstances. However, the state government can add or modify policies as per their requirement. States with less number of cases can ease out restrictions, whereas things will be stricter in areas where there are a higher number of cases,” adds Majethia. The Ministry has also advised that no visitors or audiences are to be allowed. In the case of outdoor shootings, necessary coordination has to be done with local police and administration to minimize spectators.

It is a moment of joy for film and OTT platforms as the Covid2019 halted the shoots at other locations, especially with large crews. "It's great news for the TV and film industry. What's more interesting is that the SOPs suggest some points for the opening of the exhibition. We are now looking forward to the opening of cinemas and getting the whole movie industry back on track," says SVF Entertainment co-founder director Mahendra Soni. Juggernaut Productions chief operating officer OTT-business Samar Khan mentions that the issuance of these SOPSs is a step in the right direction. He adds, “All of us have been eagerly awaiting the resumption of shoots but are also aware that crew safety is of utmost importance, following these guidelines will ensure that we can maintain the highest standards of safety while gradually resuming work.”

The ministry has also advised the industry to discontinue usage of lapel mics or at least to ensure that these are not shared. It also highlights that costumes, hair wigs, and makeup items for actors should not be shared. The SOPs states that artists should be encouraged to do their hairstyling and make-up remotely with the help of professionals. Panorama Studios run by  Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak is  a subsidiary of Panorama Studios International. Abhishek Pathak has also directed movies like Ujda Chama and Boond. He thanked the I&B ministry for focussing  on contact minimisation. "We welcome these guidelines. Yes, shooting will be a huge challenge in the Covid2019 era, but I think with vigilance and precautions, we can make a comeback steadily. This decision brings huge relief for industry dwellers whose livelihood depends on the creation of movies, series, and other content." Planet Marathi founder and filmmaker Akshay Bardapurkar who also produced AB Aani CD said that it is great news from the I&B minister himself. “However now with the opening of the shoots it would be great also to see theatres also opening up. He mentions that more than 100 films are stalled, and producers are suffering. I hope that the central government issues SOPs for theatres soon and opens them too,” adds Bardapurkar.

  • How regional producers are struggling during COVID-19

How regional producers are struggling during COVID-19

We have been subjected to further extension of COVID-19 lockdown. By now we all have got used to the situation with right from the PM and CM issuing the do’s and don’ts of the coronavirus; they also are asking us to be at home and "entertain" ourselves by TV/OTT entertainment. It’s such irony and the truth is that every time any catastrophe strikes us, including the world wars in the past, the one thing that has kept us all engaged and "alive" is this very "entertainment".

I am happy to be one of the members of this cult of the vast film industry that’s spread across the pan world and in India and regionally.

As a filmmaker, I am being very honest that I was lucky till today that I never had to bear the brunt of any catastrophe until this Covid-19 struck on me literally. My maiden film ‘Abaani CD's release got terminated by a sudden lockdown announced by the government. Only to prove that nothing is ever constant in this whole evolving world and for filmmakers whose films were aligned for a mid-March release came to a screeching halt. March and April have been witnessing a maximum release every year especially in the Marathi region and even this year was jam-packed by about eight Marathi films and two big Hindi movies. Abaani Cd was slotted in the premium category due to the presence of two stalwarts: Amitabh Bachchan and veteran Vikram Gokhale. However, our misfortune was that we could not compete and are now almost subjected to no release or have a digital release.

So how does one cope up with situations like this and what are the situations ahead for us all? One thing is sure that cinema has really evolved a lot from big screen to an idiot box to computers and now on to your mobile phones- OTT. So all of us are now subjected to an OTT release and the ones who can afford to wait can re-align the release until this whole drama fizzles out. But I have my doubts about people turning up to theatres as China is one of the biggest cinema markets which had to shut theatres after the COVID-19 attack. So the impact is not only on the filmmakers but also on the theatres, exhibitors as well as the distributors.

The second larger issue is that even if there are many OTTs in the market stacked up with over 5000 hours of entertainment already, I am unsure if they would want to go out and buy additional content. The question arises on how much of focus would be on the regional cinemas is a task in itself. Now coming to the selling of the satellite rights, this is one area which I feel can work for filmmakers if they are willing to go in for a world premiere on television. In a scenario where the filmmaker chooses to go for a standalone television premier, he would be subjected to only revenue sharing by digital mediums. "Pay per click" as televisions and OTTs’ audience is almost the same and hence the digital platforms will never buy it by paying a license fee and instead choose the other option.

The only ray of hope is that you choose any platform to be it TV or OTT at least will be assured that it will be watched but again my statistics don't make me happy as at the max if the content is above average or good at the max you shall get an audience of until 10 lakhs on OTT and about 50 lakhs on television, so not even 10% of the total population of Maharashtra will watch it.

The answer to this frankly lies in how we would make films in future and how are we going to secure it, especially Marathi cinemas? One should sell the film as early as possible to an established platform and secure your cost of the project, second is lower the cost of the projects are best suited for these situations and the third is to start making cinemas for home experience by keeping the production expense low and add a certain margin to give it away permanently.

However, if luck is your way none of the above situations can affect you and the answer to that is “the content!”. Whatever be the scenario if your project is good, be ready to earn from home.
