Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ Rahasya to release on 30 January 2015

MUMBAI: Inspired by the double Noida murder case, Viacom18 Motion Pictures is all set to present a riveting thriller named Rahasya, scheduled to release on 30 January 2015. Produced by Monica Vimal Maluka, the movie is a join presentation by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and UVI Film Productions.

The film’s story is centered on an urban doctor couple living in Mumbai whose only child, an 18 year old teenager called Ayesha Mahajan has been murdered inside their large duplex apartment.

The initial investigations point at the girl’s father as the prime accused for the murder. But as the case is taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (C.B.I.), the film questions whether a father could kill his own daughter and if not, then who killed Ayesha Mahajan?

The thriller reveals ulterior motives of near and dear ones in Ayesha’s life who could have committed this heinous crime. Directed by Manish Gupta, the acclaimed writer of Sarkar, the film features Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mita Vashisht and Ashwini Kalsekar in key roles.

Talking about the film, Viacom18 Motion Pictures COO Ajit Andhare said, “VMP is committed to bringing out scripts that make for engaging narratives. We have made unconventional thrillers into major commercial successes with films like Kahaani & Madras Café. We are looking to accomplish the same through Rahasya that brings together a terrific set of actors in an intriguing plot.”

Elaborating further, he said, “I love suspense as a genre and all my prior work has also had some element of intrigue. Rahasya is a nail-biting thriller of an eccentric officer on the hunt for a killer. We believe the movie will have audiences at the edge of their seats.”

  • 2014: Setting trends, changing paradigms

    2014: Setting trends, changing paradigms

Cinema is at its best when it surprises, changes paradigms, pushes the envelope and sets new trends. The year that was, saw new trends being set, new vistas being explored and the journey of evolving new Bollywood had some interesting new pit-stops. Here are a few of them though our lens at VMP.

    Lady’s Finish First

Queen and Mary Kom, two strong scripts, viewed from the eyes of two equally gutsy woman characters, set the Box Office ablaze. Mary Kom packed a punch with its record breaking opening weekend collection, a feat most pundits would shy from predicting for a female centric film. Queen made a silent start and like all long distance runners, gained pace as it refused to budge from the cinema halls week after week – both films eventually crossing the 100 crore gross mark globally with rave reviews that brought in audiences from every part of the world.

    World Tours

Post a historic Indian leg last year, Bhaag Milkhaa Bhaag continues its run around the world. The film is all set for a theatrical released in Japan in January 2015. Release in Latin America and France are in the works as we also take the remote Wasseypur to the United States of America with theatrical release of Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2 lined up in January 2015.

    Reversing the remake traffic

Traditionally Bollywood has seen remakes of south or Hollywood blockbusters.  We flipped the trend to remake Hindi blockbusters in the south. After its successful run at the box office, Queen and Special 26 will now be seen in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam avatars. Kahaani will soon speak to audiences in Kerala in Malayalam.

    Beyond the Fan boys

An iconic Hollywood franchise in India usually rakes in considerable attention from a niche audience. However, the beloved Transformers in its fourth avatar attracted not just ardent fans but also made new friends clocking a 30 crore weekend at Box Office.

    A Contest to Win

Through Cineshorts, we established a new and unique platform that offers the exclusive opportunity to budding filmmakers. Contestants showcased their talent through a five-minute short film, of which top five are set to be premiered on MTV Indies besides receiving significant cash prizes. The top 50 films were showcased on the studio’s official YouTube Page. A new first step to presenting fresh talent with opportunity.

    The Global 70mm

Well before its Indian release, ‘Margarita With A Straw’ started making its mark on international film festival circuit. Premiering as opening day film at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival and winning the prestigious NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award for Best Asian Film. The film went on to receiving standing ovations at the 19th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the 58th BFI London Film Festival. This Kalki Koechlin starrer also won her the Best Actress award at 17th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.

But mistake us not for elitists! We’re bringing a flurry of entertainment to cinemas in the new year. Slate of releases in 2015 features Gabbar, an action thriller with Akshay Kumar in a new look, while Dharam Sankat Mein with Paresh Rawal in the lead, along with veteran actors Anu Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. Sequel of Pyaar Ka Punchnama as the audience must look forward to watching it. Ramesh Sippy’s Shimla Mirchi marks his directorial comeback after a 15-year hiatus and the Hindi remake of Malayalam stunner  Drishyam. Our Hollywood platter includes two of the biggest crowd-puller franchises Terminator Geneysis and Mission Impossible 5.

  • Colosceum gets Siddharth Anand Kumar on board

Colosceum gets Siddharth Anand Kumar on board

MUMBAI: It was in July that Lalit Sharma, who was part of the founding team with Ajit Andhare and Rajiv Lakshman, took charge as the CEO of Colosceum.

And since then he has been working hard to take the production house, which saw a few senior exits in the past couple of years, to greater heights because he believes it’s the work that matters as people come and go. In the last couple of months three new hires have been made to strengthen the production house’s top line management.

“We have already introduced Hitesh Bhatia and Vikrant Bharadwaj in the non-scripted space, and now we have got on board Siddharth Anand Kumar as scripted creative head,” says Sharma while adding that the main aim is to strengthen the team.

“People come and people go, but what really matters is the work. One should let the work talk,” adds Sharma.

The deal was negotiated by content and talent management company, Tulsea Pictures, which represents both Kumar and Colosceum.

Kumar studied filmmaking in Hampshire College in USA and has worked as a freelance cinematographer and editor for several film and TV projects. He has worked as an assistant to Mira Nair during the making of Kamasutra (1995), as DOP and editor for Bobby Bedi during the production of the TV series Rajdhani (2000), and as the executive producer for Shekhar Kapur’s company Digital Talkies during which he oversaw the production of two feature films and the country’s first International Digital Film Festival (2001).

He has directed two films: Let’s Enjoy (2004), a film about a Delhi farmhouse party and Semshook (2010), a coming of age story set in the Tibetan exile community while his TV projects include Seven and Khotey Sikkey by Yash Raj Films on Sony and Mahabharat by Swastik Pictures on Star Plus.

Kumar states, “With various popular shows as part of their existing show reel, Colosceum has already started to establish its superiority in the Hindi GEC space. I am confident that my partnership with Colosceum will result in some exceptional fiction television content for India to watch. I am enthusiastically looking forward to working with Colosceum and to take its fiction shows to the next-level as ‘must-watch’ Indian television.”

Currently, producing Splitsvilla, the production house prouds itself of multi-seasonal properties for both youth channels and GECs. “With more and more GECs concentrating on younger audiences, the line separating the content between the two is thinning and GECs too want to attract younger eyeballs,” highlights Sharma. He credits his young-blooded team as well as experienced research team for grasping the new trends amongst youngsters and used those insights to create popular shows.

On International production houses making a mark in the Indian television industry, Sharma feels that the competition is healthy. “It is important as through these companies we get an exposure of how they work.”

The year (2013) Andhare left, the company did have to face a tough time, but things have improved now and business is only growing. The production house is already in talks with various broadcasters for new shows which will go air in the near future.

Apart from that, it is also concentrating in building the film arm and the next six months could see some good news.

  • Viacom18 Motion Pictures set to give a big break to Bollywood with ‘Cineshorts’

Viacom18 Motion Pictures set to give a big break to Bollywood with ‘Cineshorts’

MUMBAI:  Are you a movie maker waiting to debut on the silver screen? Viacom18 Motion Pictures (VMP) is giving you an opportunity to be the one. It takes the lead to recognise talent in movies by providing an exclusive opportunity for budding filmmakers to showcase their talent through a visionary initiative christened – ‘Cineshorts.’

The contest requires participants to submit a short film of five minutes, based on a theme that resonates with the upcoming film of the studio.

To up the credits, VMP is all set to flag off this engaging enterprise with its upcoming mega release Mary Kom on the theme “Against All Odds”, which celebrates the unbreakable and resilient spirit of Mary Kom. An eminent jury comprising Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Omung Kumar along with VMP COO Ajit Andhare among others will judge the competition.

Andhare believes that there is a need to democratise the entertainment space so that anyone with the vision, drive and talent can find an ecosystem of support and nurturing to make a film.  “Cineshorts is a platform that ventures into empowering talent by mentoring and showcasing their promising work. We are certain that this will usher in a new talent pool for the industry.”

Filmmaker, Bhansali echoed the sentiment. “It’s a wonderful platform, I mean, when I started off in 1994, with Khamoshi it was a very difficult process. Today’s youth come out with new ways of looking at life. They bring in a new perspective, their whole take on a story, screenplay, edit or shot taking is completely different from mine. So this is an amazing opportunity for me to see what you have to offer.”

Expressing her support of this mega platform, actress Chopra said, “When you want to establish yourself in life, you do not always need somebody to aid you but what you need is immense belief and a strong confidence in yourself. So, if I did and so did Mary Kom, why can’t you? When you have a platform like Cineshorts why don’t you just go out there and show them your talent so the whole world knows about it?”

Marking the winning edge, the top five winning films will be officially premiered on Pepsi MTV Indies, along with winning significant cash prizes. The contest ends on 30 September 2014.

“Yes, I have taken charge from today and already have had three meetings, so far. So it’s business as usual,” says Sharma who plans to finish the existing workload before he can look at other expansion plans.

“We are working on a number of shows right now. And once that’s done we will be venturing into two more verticals,” elaborates Sharma without revealing much about the two verticals. “It will take a couple of years for things to take shape,” he adds.

The production house has shows like Roadies and Master Chef India to its credit.

Prior to Colosceum, Sharma has worked with Star India for a decade for its operations department.

  • Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ 2014 movie slate

Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ 2014 movie slate

MUMBAI: The first studio model based motion picture business in India , Viacom18 Motion Pictures, a part of Viacom18 (a Viacom and Network 18 joint venture) is now treading on unchartered territories by getting into crowd funding.

The studio recently released the trailer of its first crowd funded motion picture – Manjunath – which is to hit theatres on 9 May. The film is inspired by the real-life story of a young IIM graduate, who strived to fight against corruption in Uttar Pradesh and was murdered for sealing a corrupt petrol station in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP.

Speaking on the choice of the story Viacom18 Motion Pictures COO Ajit Andhare says: “The story may be of a common man, but what we look for when scouting for scripts is extraordinary or uncommon stories, and Manjunath fits the bill perfectly. His sacrifice spurred people on to take measures and that’s the kind of stories we support.”

On the aspect of getting crowd funding for the biopic he adds: “It’s a film in one sense where everyone takes responsibility and can play a role in the message coming out from Manjunath’s story. So, the crowd funding idea came to us because we felt that would be best suited to involve people and anyone can voluntarily come and support the film.”

With operations that involve acquisition, production, syndication, marketing and worldwide distribution of full-length feature films, the studio’s first movie was Halla Bol in 2008. And ever since, it has forayed into various genres of cinema, right from drama, comedy, romance, action to biopics with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013.

“As a studio we look for content that stands out and that has not been usually told; even an OMG and Gangs of Wasseypur were good prospects. And with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, we have proven that with a strong script and performance any film can cross the Rs 100 crore barrier at the box office. Even Queen has crossed Rs 100 crore (global collections) this year,” quips Andhare.

Manjunath will be the first biopic made on the life of a common man and has been supported by acclaimed actors like Divya Dutta, Seema Biswas and Yashpal Sharma, among others. They have been touched by Manjunath’s story and worked for a nominal fee. The movie has been directed by Sandeep Varma, reputed to be an ad-film maker and the MD of ICOMO. Further to its credit; the music in the film has been composed by the Delhi rock band Parikrama.

“The film is completely to the credit of Sandeep and it has been his journey, along with NFDC and ICOMO to mount this film. We came on board once we saw the journey and witnessed what he has managed to pull-off being a debutant director and we wanted to support this movie and the director with the vision to pull off such a challenging story,” says he.

Viacom18 Motion Pictures will be distributing the film, and is currently focused on building anticipation around the film. “It’s a bit too early to talk about how wide will the release be and decisions around that would be made more closer to the release date after tracking how the market responds to it and likewise the theatres and multiplex chains,” explains Andhare.

With recent films being distributed entirely on digital these days, irrespective of the budget or genre and an increasing trend of tying up with online streaming services like Spuul to release the movie online parallel to the theatrical release. Such a film may look at such avenues for better reach and viewership as well.

Scheduled for a release amidst elections and IPL, are there any concerns? “I feel the time is right when the country is looking for their next leader and government, a story like this will have more traction,” answers Andhare.

The studio believes that if the content is strong and the film has something to offer the audience then the film will make a connect with the viewers. “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag offered inspiration of a different kind to the audience; Queen on the other hand offered the experience of a coming of age to the audience, with travel and transformation. So what we look to do is to offer something extra. Because sitting in a dark room for three hours with only one break, the audience should not feel punished,” he expounds.

The slate for already released films in 2014 include: The Royal Bengal Tiger (Bengali); One by Two; Queen; Nee Enge En Anbe (Tamil); Anamika (Telugu) and Noah (Hollywood). And the rest of the year is packed with a real good mix of movies like: Manjunath (9 May); Margarita with a straw; Transformers 4; Hercules 3D; Turtles; Gabbar; Mary Kom and Dharam Sankat Mein.

“We always aim to have a balanced portfolio for the calendar year, where the risks are well balanced out for the studio. And we believe in reaching out to get all kinds of movies to the audience creatively as well,” expounds Andhare. “We want to serve the best spread that can be served to the audience in the calendar year. Only doing large films will not enable reducing the risk level, and this will lead to either big blockbusters or major flops. Thus, smaller films help in calibrating losses.”

The studio has some major releases in its Hollywood slate for the year as well, and will be pushing and promoting it aggressively when the time is right. “Plans are afoot really drive our Hollywood slate and we have a really powerful line-up for this year. Transformers as a franchise is a highly anticipated film and over the years the English language film entertainment market has also been growing steadily and we have a long term commitment to build this market and continue to do so.”
