    Singham Returns…Half a Singham!

MUMBAI: Sequels are usually a means of using the brand equity of the title of a successful film. Singham Returns is one more such example. Ajay Devgn is still a cop who can fell half a dozen goons with one blow. Well, he has to, since the goons come in droves of fifty or more. But while that remains the same, the rest has changed because most Hindi filmmakers take the audience for granted while making a sequel.

Devgn, a defiant and honest cop, who has been transferred to Mumbai from his Goa post in Singham (while in reality, such cops are transferred out of Mumbai!). Since he is Singham, he remains constant, while all including the villains as well as his wife to be too (!) have changed. Actually, the film has no space for a female lead but that would be a great risk according to Indian films’ unwritten regulations.

Devgn is in comfortable company. His school teacher, Anupam Kher, leads a ruling political party, albeit in keeping with the recent trend of a coalition with another party. Kher’s party has Mahesh Manjrekar as the CM while his coalition partner is Zakir Hussain, whose strings are pulled by a swami, Aloke Gupte. Being Guru Kher’s disciple, Manjrekar and Devgn are both on the right side of the law while Hussain, under the auspice of the swami, is corruption personified and, obviously, possesses a criminal mind-set. It is a formula that has been working for decades; a swami and a seedy politician have always made a great combination for villainy.

As things go, Devgn has the backing of all concerned: his school senior, the CM Manjrekar; their common school guru Kher; the police commissioner, Sharat Saxena; as well as the all of 40,000 odd cops of Mumbai!

Everybody knows that the villains are Gupte and Hussain but the law needs proof. That is what the whole film is about. 142 minutes of finding proof against two not-so-sinister or convincing villains, Hussain and Gupte. So, finally, the film amounts to one-upmanship between the villains and Devgn. It goes on and on as the judiciary needs proof and police being what it is supposed to be, can’t protect its only witness. The villains win all the way until, finally, the law keepers become outlaws to liquidate the villains. They march in their sponsored banians to the villains den in just about the most clap trap scene in the film.

The problem with Singham Returns is that it is an oft repeated story about a swami and a corrupt politician pitted against an honest establishment represented by a cop. What is more, it is poorly scripted. The film starts with the super cop, Devgn and a youth brigade riding fast bikes. That is rather tame. The script is so predictable, it could be any honest cop vs corrupt politician. Rohit Shetty’s direction without his blowing up cars does not amount to much really. The film has four music directors and eight lyricists on it credits but no song worth a mention!  Dialogue is okay at times. While the film needs some more trimming, the positive factor is its photography, especially aerial shots of Mumbai.

As for performances, nobody really needs to act in this film. Devgn with his puffed up cheeks does what he does on regular basis: throw punches. Kareena Kapoor has no role really and just pouts her way through. Kher is his usual self. While Gupte overacts as the swami, Hussain is the only one who is convincing. Dayanand Shetty, the Daya of the TV serial CID does what he does in the serial; act as a mighty cop and breaks down doors; he is effective. Rest in the cast are incidental.

On the whole, Singham Returns is a high priced routine film with only salvation being its four day weekend starting with the Independence Day holiday on Friday and ending with the Janmashtami holiday on Monday. Much appreciated earlier version, Singham, had barely managed to make it to 100 crore mark. While this film needs to do twice as much, it will fall much short of that mark.

  • ‘Himmatwala’ receives worst film title at Golden Kela Awards

‘Himmatwala’ receives worst film title at Golden Kela Awards

NEW DELHI: Box Office returns notwithstanding, Hrithik Roshan’s Krishh 3 and Ajay Devgn’s Himmatwala topped the list of the worst Bollywood films of 2013 in the sixth annual Golden Kela Awards presented over the weekend.

Ajay Devgn(for Himmatwala) and Sonakshi Sinha (for R…Rajkumar) received the Golden Kelas for the second consecutive year in the worst actor category. Ajay had won the award in 2012 for ‘Son of Sardaar’ and ‘Bol Bachchan’ and Sonakshi for the five films she had acted in during that year. Her co-star in R…..Rajkumar won the ‘Why are You Still Trying’ award for the same film.

Himmatwala, remake of the Jeetendra starrer of 1983 which itself was remake of a Telugu film of 1981 also got the ‘RGV Ki Aag’ Award for the ‘Most Pointless re-make/sequel’, and the ‘Worst Film’ award.

Krishh 3 shared the ‘Ra One’ award for the ‘Worst Premise’ along with Dhoom 3, while it also received an award for the ‘Most Atrocious Lyrics’ for Sameer’s ‘Raghupati Raghav’.

Interestingly, Aamir Khan won the ‘Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke’ award for Dhoom 3. He got it for the ‘high level of stupidity in stunts and action, playing a ridiculously unnecessary double role and finally for succumbing to the dark side of Bollywood.’

Golden Kela Awards creative head Anant Singh, who also presented the programme, said “Aamir Khan once said that he loves the Kela Awards, because all other awards are rigged. Wonder what he has to say about us now.”

The awards are inspired by the Golden Raspberry awards given in Hollywood – commonly known as the Razzies.

The Kela for the ‘Worst Director’ went to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Goliyon Ki Raas Leela…Ram Leela.

Actor Vivek Oberoi won the ‘This is too Much Award’ for the four films in which he appeared in 2013 – Krishh 3, Jayantabhai ki Luv Story. Grand Mastie, and Zila Ghaziabad.

‘Aap Yahaan Aaye Kisliye Award’ was given to Uday Chopra and was preceded by a tribute to ‘the late career’ of the actor, ending with the words ‘In memoriam 2000-2013.’

The honour for the ‘Worst Actor (male) in supporting role’ went to Aditya Roy Kapoor for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – a wake-up call that acting needs a lot more than getting high! ‘The Worst Supporting Actor (Female)’ went jointly to Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandes and Amisha Patel for Race 2. Deepika also won the ‘Dara Singh Award for the Worst Accent’ for Chennai Express.

The most ‘Irritating Song’ award went to ‘Party All Night’ from Boss while the ‘Rajshri Award for Most Regressive Film of the Year’ was bagged by Ranjhanaa.

Tennis star Leander Paes got the ‘Worst Debut’ for Rajdhani Express.

The ‘Aakhir Kyun Award’ went to Priyanka Chopra for the music video Exotic and the ‘Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award’ was given to Sunny Deol.

Anant said, “Himmatwala was named for obvious reasons including over-the-top acting, irritating melodrama, lame jokes, mindless entertainment, and just about everything else!”

Shahid Kapoor was given the award to make him understand that doing lame comedies and using senseless dialogues like “Silent ho ja, nahi to main violent ho jaaonga”, will not make him a superstar.

However amid this morass, some films received the Anti-Kela awards for being the saving graces of 2013. These include Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns – for being the only real sequel made last year; Go Goa Gone – for being India’s first ever Zombie Comedy and Stoner Film in one cool package; The Lunchbox – for showing the world that Indian films are not all song and dance, and Shahid – for being the best biopic made by Bollywood in a long time.

Golden Kela founder Jatin Varma and filmmaker Abhishek Sharma also gave away some of the awards, and stand-up comedian Zakir Khan teamed up with Anant to provide the humorous touch to the awards.

  • Ajay Devgn to promote indie films with a US production house

Ajay Devgn to promote indie films with a US production house

MUMBAI: Usually made on a shoestring budget and with limited resources, independent films have to grapple a lot to find their place among the right audience. But it seems there’s some help at hand for the indie filmmakers now.

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Brillstein Entertainment Partners (BEP) have announced a partnership to form LA-based Shivalaya Entertainment. The development and financing outfit will focus on independent films that will aim for broad appeal.

Shivalaya has given a go ahead to its first film, Parched, that is centered on the bitter-sweet journey of women in the parched rural landscape of India. It was written and is to be directed by Leena Yadav who has directed Teen Patti, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley.

“At one end, traditional films continue to entertain and make business sense. At the other, there is a resounding presence of some new forms and voices making a mark in this ever expanding medium. I am keen to be a part of that growth, that change,” said Devgn in a release.

“I am coming forth to support the independent film process where we can share important stories that need to be told — global stories that will resonate with international audiences. Our collaboration with Brillstein is an important step in that direction, to ensure we have the best resources from the west to engage a wider audience,” he added.

BEP executive Jai Khanna said that the production house has projects in the pipeline targeted for an international appeal. “We will also be looking at working on projects with a diversity of talent, American or otherwise, with an aim to reach out to wider audiences,” he said Khanna in a release.

“The stories could be from any culture but with a universal appeal. We at Brillstein are perfectly positioned to bring these kinds of films to the table while packaging the appropriate talent that such stories merit.”

  • Satyagraha ends with Rs 32.5 crore for opening weekend

Satyagraha ends with Rs 32.5 crore for opening weekend

Prakash Jha’s preachy socio-political film Satyagraha lost the plot as it came into its later part which refused to move and marred the film. The mass single screen cinemas were the first to reject the film. At high end multiplexes the film did well over Saturday and Sunday as its solo release status and face value propped it up and the film ended its opening weekend with Rs 32.5 crore.

This is Prakash Jha’s yet another attempt at addressing the citizens of India to rise up and bring about a revolution. The film has an ensemble cast:  Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Arjun Ramphal, Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Rao among others.

Madras Café starring John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri has not worked with the audience as, after a weekend of Rs 18 crore, the film has settled for Rs 31.45 crore for the first week. The makers of the film are now planning to request for tax exemption considering the message being delivered by the film.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara the sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai starring Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha has done a little over 10 per cent of its first week collection by adding Rs 5.75 crore and taking its two week tally to Rs 54.55 crore.

Chennai Express that paired Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone once again after Om Shanti Om has done fairly well in its third week by collecting Rs 16 crore to take its three week total to Rs 194.7 crore.

B.A. Pass has collected Rs 35 lakh for its fourth week to take the total to Rs 7.4 crore.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag the biopic on the great Indian athlete Milkha Singh starring Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor has added Rs 50 lakh in its seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 106.85 crore.
