2017 blockbuster hit ‘Golmaal Again’ will make its television premiere on star gold this friday

MUMBAI: Star Gold is kicking off the year with the World Television Premiere of one of the most succesful films of 2017, Golmaal Again, that raked in over 200 crores at the box office and set it on fire with its unmatched gags and action. The film that left audiences in splits of laughter and many ‘rolling on the floor’ moments will make its television debut this Friday, 26th January at 12PM on the Home of Blockbusters.

  • Discovery Jeet gears up for Feb 12 launch

Discovery Jeet gears up for Feb 12 launch

MUMBAI: Discovery Networks is all set to dive into the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) category. Putting rest to speculation, Discovery Jeet, the network’s maiden GEC, will launch on 12 February 2018.

After dominating the infotainment genre on television for the longest time, Discovery Communications is shedding its cocoon to woo viewers with 1000 hours of original fictional content a year. This is in stark contrast to just seven hours of non-fiction that Discovery India gets.

Discovery has done its homework well to come up with its own GEC channel. Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Discovery Communications India SVP and GM Karan Bajaj said, “The only way to aggregate scale on TV is daily viewership. Everything on Jeet is being mounted as a soap opera.” For the first year, there will be three to four hours of shows to tap this daily-viewing audience and two hours of weekend content for tier 2 and 3 cities.

Bajaj identified the 250 million TV households in India as a pyramid. The top 15 million (which he expects to double to 30 million in five years) have fixed broadband and premium DTH. The next 120 million have cable TV and mobile phones. The last 120 million is split into 20 million with Free Dish and the rest without any TV access. The middle will grow at 10 per cent while the bottom of the pyramid will be exposed to personal TVs for the first time.

Rather than mimic the tried-and-tested models of the competition, Bajaj has decided to focus on ‘perception selling’. With its premium and purposeful content, he said that Jeet will scrape a good chunk of the premium layer. With his strong background in consumer companies such as Kraft, P&G and BCG, he is also giving advertisers a proposition they cannot refuse. He says, “The context of the show where you advertise is at times strikingly in contrast to what the brand stands for. So, to get scale, advertisers have no other option.” He gives the instance of a progressive brand such as Ariel, which he handled during his stint at P&G, where the target audience could be reached only through a regressive soap opera.

However, he says that Jeet will allow brands to flourish by not only providing them with scale but also premium content that matches the brand philosophy. Thus, the channel’s target is to net this creamy layer of India’s TV consumers.

For Jeet, Distribution is an important pre-launch target. The channel will be available on subscription-based pay TV, which is a part of the network’s premium revenue strategy. “We are very singular in our offering so you must have Discovery in your bouquet. It is not a replaceable GEC.”

Even before the launch, the channel had been inundated with requests for international syndication. “The interest in our content is high and these independent affiliate networks have sampled our other content,” Bajaj explained. Christopher McGrath is in charge of global content syndication.

Discovery Communications currently has 12 channels and Discovery Jeet is replacing Investigation Discovery channel. Vijay Rajput is the distribution head.

Since the channel has decided to bite the bullet, it will be pinning its hopes to snag a place in the coveted GEC market.

    The shows

Swami Ramdev: The Untold Story, an Ajay Devgn Films production, has been one of the most talked about shows in the lead up to the launch. The dramatised version of real events will unfold in a daily format of 23 minutes. Another show is Saragarhi, which is a finite series by Contiloe production house, will highlight the plight of 21 Sikh soldiers. Both these shows will have an 85-episode run. Shooting for the first wave of shows for three to four months has already been completed; the channel is onto the next wave.

A supernatural TV series produced by Lotus Talkies Productions has found its way on Jeet as Anjaan, which will be a 45-minute weekend show. Another show is Hero Hiralal that revolves around an auto-rickshaw driver and his seven-year-old daughter who requires a heart transplant. This show is being edited in-house. Both these are infinite. The weekends will primarily feature non-fiction comedy shows.

  • Golmaal Again: Entertaining suspense thriller

    Golmaal Again: Entertaining suspense thriller

The most successful franchise in Hindi films, Golmaal, strikes again. And, aptly, the title is Golmaal Again. The main faces of the franchise — Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, ShreyasTalpade and Kunal Khemu are very much there so are the other regulars, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari, Johny Lever, Murli Sharma and Vrajesh Hirjee.

However, what has changed is the film’s regular location, Goa, its sun, sea and sand. Golmaal Again is based in Ooty. That is because, the film needs something like British countryside with an old mansion as the backdrop.

The film deals with the supernatural, ghosts, deception and revenge. For a change, the climax here is not a farce as it usually is with this franchise.

The characters of Ajay, Arshad, Tusshar, Kunal and Shreyash are being tended in an orphanage in Ooty started by a millionaire, played by Uday Tikekar, who forsakes all his businesses to look after orphans. The five are divided into two groups: Ajay and Shreyas on one side while Arshad, Tusshar and Kunal are on the other. Both sides are always at loggerheads. One fine day, Ajay and Shreyas walk out of the orphanage after a scolding from Tikekar; Arshad, Tusshar and Kunal follow suit soon.

Both groups are now grown up and are into the same business: that of grabbing land and property for money on behalf of others. While Ajay does it for Sanjay Mishra, Arshad does it for Prakash Raj.

The five of them learn that the father figure of the orphanage, Tikekar, who cared for them has passed away, and they decide to visit the orphanage to take part in the rituals. But, the reason is more: both the groups are assigned to grab the land belonging to the orphanage along with the piece belonging to a blind ex-army man, played by Sachin Khedekar, Tikekar’s friend.

Tabu, a librarian in Ooty who looks after the affairs of the mansion, assigns rooms to the five to stay till the rituals are over. Tabu has a special gift in that she can see ghosts as well as communicate with them. At the mansion, the five also meet Parineeti Chopra who is introduced to them as the maid of the house.

After the usual gimmicks and the gags that the divided five go through like in other Golmaal instalments, it is time to lend some purpose to Golmaal Again. It turns out that Tikekar did not die by falling off the terrace. And that Parineeti is not really who she was introduced as. Only Tabu knew who she was.

It is time for the five to join forces along with Tabu and Parineeti to sort out things and bring culprits to book. The change of background in Golmaal Again takes a while for the viewer to get adjusted to. As this one moves from Goa to Ooty, and is a suspense thriller instead of being an all fun film. But, once into the film, it does not fail to entertain.

The best part, of course, is the dialogue and one-liners that keep the pace going. Shot on scenic, lush green background, the cinematography is soothing to the eye.

The usual Golmaal gang of Ajay, Arshad, Tushaar, Kunal and Shreyas have nothing new to do beyond what they have done earlier. The casting of Parineeti and Tabu brings a fresh look to the film.

The film has a proper villain in Prakash Raj this time and springs a surprise with Neil Nitin Mukesh joining the action in the latter half. The actors mimicking Nana Patekar followed by his sudden cameo make for pleasant viewing.

Lever, Mishra, Tiwari and Hirjee provide relief from time to time.

Golmaal Again is the right kind entertainer for the festive period. Keeps you happy while you are watching it. The opening day response has been encouraging, and the weekend is expected to help maintain the momentum.

    Producer, director: Rohit Shetty.

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu, ShreyasTalpade, Sanjay Mishra, Johny Liver, Mukesh Tiwari, VrajeshHirjee,Murli Sharma, Prakash Raj, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Nana Patekar (cameo).

  • Star Bharat’s Dusshera campaign shows why Dhoni, Mithali and Devgn advocated ‘Burn your Fears’

Star Bharat’s Dusshera campaign shows why Dhoni, Mithali and Devgn advocated ‘Burn your Fears’

MUMBAI: Star Bharat has unveiled a campaign to further communicate the channel philosophy and inspire the nation to be fearless. Maestro A.R. Rahman’s signature music for Star Bharat is used in these films adding further weight to the thought, Bhula de Darr.

Leading the movement “Burn your Fear” are icons of the natio — MS Dhoni, Mithali Raj and Ajay Devgn who come together in the campaign produced and directed by Star India’s creative team in association with Leo Burnett who thought of the idea and drafted script. It shows these icons taking the first step and revealing how they overcame their fears and fulfilled their potential and dreams. Their act of proclaiming their deepest fear and “burning it” sends the message that on the other side of fear lies glory, thus encouraging Indians to overcome fears, roadblocks and limitations.

“As a society we instill fear from childhood right up to adulthood,” says Star India entertainment CEO Amit Chopra, “Of course, this is disguised as caution, prudence or even concern. But the fact of the matter remains that this fear holds us back from achieving our dreams or, maybe even dreaming. “Burn your Fear” inspires people to conquer their fears, unleash their true selves and chase their dreams. Just like the icons in our brand film. The campaign which culminates this Dussehra will be all about burning one’s fears.”

In the promo film, Dhoni talks about how he had to grapple with the security that his job with the Railways entailed and his dream of being a cricketer. “Cricket mein bhi career na bana, aur ye naukri bhi haath se gayi toh?, he says. “Agar life mein kuchh alag karna hai. Toh iss darr ka saamna toh karna hi padhega. Yaani iss darr ki wicket toh giraani padhegi.”

Mithali Raj was dissuaded from pursuing cricket. “Jab maine cricket ko apna career banaane ka socha, toh sabne kaha main bahut badhi galti kar rahi hoon. Women’s cricket kaun dekhta hai, she notes in the film. “Per cricketer banna tha, toh banna tha.” Today, she is an inspiration to millions of girls and boys alike.

Ajay Devgn’s debut film involved a stunt with two bikes. In the promo, he talks about how people around tried to stop him from undertaking this dangerous act. “Sabne samjhaya bevakoofi mat kar. Kuch gadbad ho gayi toh tera career shuru hone se pehle hi khatam ho jaayega, he reminiscences. “Jhoot nahi bolunga, darr toh bahut laga tha. Kahin meri pehli film meri aakhri na ban jaye. Par uss din, agar main darr se darr jata, toh jo aaj hoon vo kabhi na ban pata.”

Actor Sidharth Malhotra along with the other Bollywood personalities will be seen joining the campaign later.

The brand campaign will go live across Star India network along with social media; encouraging the nation to share their fears and take the first step towards overcoming them in the journey to achieving their dreams.

  • Previous releases continue to rule box office as new releases fail

Previous releases continue to rule box office as new releases fail

This has been another week of disappointments. Two new releases in Ajay Devgn starrer Baadshaho and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh mangal Saavdhan, have failed to meet the expectations. Though the films opened with poor response, both got the advantage of Saturday being a Bakra Eid holiday.

Coming as it came from director Milan Luthria and his regular writer Rajat Arora, one familiar with the trade expected a lot from the film Baadshaho. The film can easily be rated as the worst from the duo. This despite the fact that Milan has directed eight films before this and was a co-producer here. But, alas!

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan promised little and did just that. Aayushman Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar have not been able to emerge from their initial success. Still passing off the same expressions as acting does not work for either.

The film could have thrived from the mere contradictions 0f a man used to having fun with other women suddenly discovering at the age of 26 when he meets a girl he loves, that he suffers from an erectile dysfunction!

Hence, save for the Eid holiday and the baasi Eid falling on Sunday which may help augment the collections, theMonday test will be tough for both the films to live up to.

*Baadshaho, which opened with a little over Rs 100 million, added a bit on Saturday cashing in on the Eid crowd. The weekend was fair with the post Eid crowd to help as the film collect Rs 354 million for the weekend. The film will find it tough to hold through rest of the week.

*Shubh Mangal Saavdhan had a poor opening. It gained a little on Saturday and Sunday being Eid weekend, it ended up collecting Rs 133.5 million for its opening weekend.

*A Gentleman fails badly as the film managed to collect just Rs 155 million in its first week.

*Babumoshai Bandookbaaz fared poorly and collected Rs 68 million in its first week.

*Sniff managed to collect about Rs 10 million in its first week.

*Barreilly KI Barfi holds reasonably well in its second week to collect Rs 73 million taking its two week total to Rs 288 million.

*Toilet Ek Prem Katha held very well in its third week by collecting Rs 65 million to take its three week tally to Rs 1.267 billion.

*Mubarakan has added about Rs two million in its fifth week to take its five-week total to Rs 566 million.

  • A rustic comedy and a thriller fail to lift spirits this week

A rustic comedy and a thriller fail to lift spirits this week

    Baadshaho………..Poor show

Baadshaho is an action heist film which bases its story in the period after the declaration of the National Emergency in 1975. However for its plot, it takes its inspiration from various English as well as Hindi films where a bunch of daredevils are assigned to hijack an armoured truck full of royal treasure.

A person, a lookalike of Sanjay Gandhi, is at a party. Also present is the princess, Ileana D’Cruz, of some place in Rajasthan. The privy purses have been withdrawn and now the source of sustenance for the princess is the treasure her ancestors gathered during their reign.

The Sanjay lookalike has a eye on Ileana and when he makes his advances, she stops him cold by pulling out a family sword.

The Emergency has been declared and it is time for the bad man to seek his revenge. He orders an army officer to confiscate all of Ileana’s family treasure and also arrest her on the grounds that she failed to declare her assets.

Ileana has a personal bodyguard, Ajay Devgn, who earlier served under her father and who is the only person her father trusted. She romances Ajay to make doubly sure he remains loyal to her. She asks him to save her treasure which is being transferred in a fool-proof armoured military truck to the bad man’s personal collection.

Ajay forms a group of four. He enlists Emraan Hashmi and Sanjay Mishra, an expert at opening any safe. The fourth in the group is Esha Gupta, Ileana’s friend.

All this seems very exciting but the dull part starts when the four get into planning the heist. Ajay and his gang has to contend with men from the army no less, and they have assigned their best commando, Vidyut Jamwal, to protect and deliver the treasure-laden truck to the baddie in Delhi.

What follows is a chase through the deserted roads of Rajasthan as Ajay, Emraan, Esha and Mishra get in the act to hijack the truck. There are some stunts and some gunfights before they take hold of the truck. The chase has now reverses with Ajay and his group being chased by Jamwal and his men to regain control of the truck. Some more action and some hand-to-hand fight and the final deceit—as Ajay was not the only one Ileana was romancing.

The story is not convincing and the screenplay is too loose. An action-adventure film needs tense moments which are lacking. Even during the Emergency, one does not expect the army to help a politician, howsoever powerful, to steal somebody’s treasure. And, that an army commando on duty should be leading the theft. The direction lacks the slickness of a usual Luthria film. The film has thankfully avoided too many songs. An old Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan number, Mere Rashke Qamar….has been put to good use here. Cinematography is good but the climax action shot in desert amid a dust storm makes it impossible to see who is fighting who.

Performance wise, the film is lacking as Ajay Devgn looks mechanical while Emraan is little better. Sanjay Mishra is good as usual. Jamwal dons a wig as big as a helmet and has none of his signature bare-chested fights. Esha Gupta adds the necessary glam angle. Ileana D’Cruz does not fill the personality of a royal.

Baadshaho is a poor film with some appeal for single screen and poor prospects as a whole.

Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Kishan Kumar, Milan Luthria.

    Director: Milan Luthria.

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, Ileana D’Cruz, Vidyut Jamwal, Sanjay Mishra.

    Shubh Mangal Saavdhan………..The title warns!

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is one more romantic comedy set in UP. The arranged marriages are said to tie two families and the extended families are meant to respect each other while also maintaining a kind of distance. The families in this film are a bit different.

In an effort to give a purpose to the story, the film’s main theme is erectile dysfunction. Ayushman Khurrana is an engineering diploma holder working somewhere in the NCR. He has taken a liking to Bhumi Pednekar and stalks her every day. Yet, he stops short of approaching her and striking up a conversation. Bhumi, on her part, is pleased that a presentable young man is interested in her and, every day, when Ayushman stalks her, she expects him to come and break the ice.

Finally, when he gathers courage to approach her, a bear from a roadside madari clings to his leg and his mission remains incomplete. The family may look traditional but their thinking is quite contemporary. On his mother’s advice, Ayushman sends a marriage proposal online to Bhumi.

Both families are happy at the prospects of the wedding of their respective wards. A video conference between both families finalises the rishta.

Bhumi is happy and  yet disappointed at the sudden development. She did not plan on a sudden arranged marriage. She dreamt of romance; to meet Ayushman, go through the whole process and the excitement of courting, the SMS, the late night chats, before marrying.

The couple now plans to make up on the romance before the wedding date. And, one fine evening, both get excited and plan to celebrate their honeymoon not waiting for the wedding. To their disappointment, Ayushman realizes that he is not quite up to it (a bit late at age 26). He has a problem of erectile dysfunction. Looks like, he cannot get excited enough. Ayushman tries all the quacks and Bangalibabas to no avail.

Ayushman is not sure about getting into matrimony anymore but Bhumi is determined. Her contention is that the duo can do a lot of things so what if there is no sex. Soon, Ayushman’s problem is known to everybody. The rest of the film tries to thrive on that but does not quite manage it. For the sake of comedy, the girl’s and boy’s parents trade blames, exchange insults, stopping just short of coming to blows.

The writers seem to be in a hurry to introduce the erectile dysfunction angle and see the whole film through on that ‘ace’ in their script. So, that happens soon into the film even before the plot develops or before whiling away some footage on romance, song and dance.

The erectile problem should have served its purpose had it been introduced best at the break of the first half. For, after springing early, there is nothing left to lift the film. The comedy situations are forced and you do not know who is doing what and to what end! The outcome is a farce.

There is nothing much to say about the performances of the lead pair, Ayushman

Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar. The supporting cast has some talented lot who give a good account of themselves. Direction is below par. The film is only 105 minutes in duration but, lacking substance, seems too long. Cinematography is okay. Musically, Kanha….has some appeal. Dialogues provide some pleasant moments at times.

Opened with poor response, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan offers little in the name of comedy.

Producers: Aanand L Rai, Krishika Lulla.

    Director: R S Prasanna.

Cast: Ayushman Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, Brijendra Kala.

  • Content is supreme, lyrics are vital, says Farhan Akhtar at NDTV conclave

Content is supreme, lyrics are vital, says Farhan Akhtar at NDTV conclave

MUMBAI: “If the story is not good, then no matter where you shoot the film it doesn’t matter. Content has to be supreme. There was a time when music became more important than lyrics. Audience would not even remember the lyrics. That is changing now. The thought that if you have one hit number in the movie and that can ensure success of the film is also changing,” said actor-director Farhan Akhtar at the NDTV conclave in New Delhi on Monday.

NDTV saw the culmination of its Youth for Change Conclave, a day-long event that aims to focus on solutions for challenges that our youth face today. This year saw a host of personalities from diverse fields come together to address the issues that are concerned with today’s youth.

The sessions also featured celebrities like Kangana Ranaut, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, Armaan Malik, Neeti Mohan, Irshad Kamil, Sachin Jigar and the stars of the women cricket team – Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Punam Raut, among others. The sessions covered issues ranging from Gender divide, challenges of fake news and is social media a bane or boon.

Ranaut shared the travails of being a superstar: “Big cities are money-oriented, small towns are more concerned about what people – buaji, mausiji – will say. I come from an extreme environment, a conservative background. I felt stifled and just wanted to be free. On being discriminated against as a child: I could never feel pride in my lineage and I don’t feel like I belong when I go home. I want to tell women that they should fight for their own dignity, be it against fathers, husbands or children.”

Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Punam Raut talked about setting new records against all odds.

Raj, Captain, Women Cricket Team, said: “PM Modi tweeting about the women’s team was a moment of pride for us. My grandparents did not want me to take up cricket. Cricket is not life to me. There is life beyond cricket too.”

Goswami, cricketer, said: “”World Cup final defeat will continue to hurt all of us. After beating Pakistan in the World Cup league match, even their fans applauded us. Unfortunately only one day out of 365 is celebrated as Women’s Day.”

Arjun Kapoor, actor, shared his views on the gender divide: “”I am not very educated. I didn’t clear my Class 11. But, my upbringing has been such that despite this lack of education, I got a chance to move on in my life to do what I wanted to do. I don’t think women get such opportunity. I have grown up among women, predominantly with my sister and mother, and I have seen how strongly women face adversity. We should incorporate it in the syllabus itself how men should treat women. We always hear, ‘Stop crying like a woman.’ We inadvertently are implying that women are the weaker gender. I have a sister and somewhere there is always a concern about her safety. It is not just about urban or rural areas, world over security of women is an area of concern. We are moving forward and progress is everyone’s right. It cannot be gender specific. Gender parity means that both are equal not one is superior to the other.”

Armaan Malik, singer: “I was a 10-year-old when I got to know that I am from Music composer Hasrat Jaipuri’s family. In my family everybody is a composer, I am the first one to get into singing. My grandmother makes me listen to Hasratji’s music and always asks me if such good music is being composed today as well. I feel good music is still being created.”

Irshad Kamil, lyricist: “Today the films are closer to reality and so the scope of music in the films have gone down.”

Sachin-Jigar, music composer duo: “The shelf life of songs have not gone down. Today lot more songs are being made and so audience has a lot of options to keep sifting through. But good songs live on for a long time even today.”

Ajay Devgn, actor: “Always look ahead and not dwell on the past, just focus on rectifying the errors as we move forward.”

Emraan Hashmi, actor, said: “If you are from a family connected with film industry then getting a break may be easier but at the end of the day you have to be good in acting. At the end of the day the audience is the decision maker. There is more pressure on ‘star kids’.”
