Ajay Devgn Films appeal against verdict on YRF ties with single screen theatres

NEW DELHI: Ajay Devgn Films has approached the appellate tribunal against the dismissal of their case where it claimed that the act by Yash Raj Films of releasing ‘Ek tha tiger‘ in single screens during Eid on condition that ‘Jab Tak hai Jaan‘ would be released during Diwali was anti-competitive.

The Competition Commission of India had yesterday said, “There is no contravention of the Competition Act with regard to the agreement between Yash Raj Films and single screen exhibitors with regard to the film ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ starring Salman Khan.”

In a statement today, Ajay Devgn Films which is seeking to release ‘Son of Sardar‘ during Diwali said, “We are shocked by the rejection of our legitimate case by the CCI. We have approached the Appellate Tribunal against the order.”

The Commission had said the agreements entered into in July/August were not anti-competitive.

The allegation by Ajay Devgn was that at the time of the release of ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ on 15 August, Yash Raj Films and its distributors had taken an undertaking that they would also release the film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan‘ by the same producer during Diwali. Ajay Devgn alleged that it was laid down that any single screen theatre who did not agree to booking of his theatre for both the films would not get the right to exhibit the single film.

But the Commission was informed that ‘some did not agree to this and did not enter into the agreement‘.

The Commission said, “The act of booking theatres by a distributor for its two films simultaneously when the theatre owners have the liberty either to agree or not to agree, is not a restraint on the freedom of business of theatre owners. The theatre owners can wait for other films and can refuse to book their theatres simultaneously for two films. Even otherwise the non significant position held by the single screen theatres does not cause any adverse effect on the competition. Furthermore under the Act, tie-in arrangements per se are not violative of section 3(4)(a) of the Act.”

The trailer of SoS, directed by Ashwini Dhir, that was unveiled a few weeks ago has been the talk of the town for more reasons than one.

The film boasts of a huge cast with Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt pitted along with Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla. Secondly, the trade buzz on the movie too has been tremendous.

The theatrical trailer (which has got millions of views) too went viral few hours after its launch with fans and people in the industry talking positively about it on social networking platforms.

  • Bol Bachchan collects Rs 824.4 million net in 10 days, says Fox Star Studios

MUMBAI: The Ajay Devgn-Abhishek Bachchan starrer and Rohit Shetty – directed Bol Bachchan has collected Rs 824.4 million net in 10 days, according to the film‘s distributor, Fox Star Studios.

The film, which collected Rs 668.1 million net all across India in the first week, has managed to stay strong during week two as well, despite the release of the Saif Ali Khan-Deepika Padukore and Diana Penty starrer Cocktail on Friday.

According to Fox Star Studios, the comic film showed an upward trend in the second weekend collections with figures such as Rs 32.5 million on Friday, Rs 53.5 million on Saturday and Rs 70.3 million on Sunday taking the 2nd weekend total to a strong figure of Rs 156.3 million net.

Presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision and Ajay Devgn Films‘, the film also has Asin and Prachi Desai in lead roles.

Bombay HC declares Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision defaulters

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has declared Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision as defaulters over the non-payment of dues to film financier Raju Shah.

Shah had moved the court after the cheques issued by the production house bounced. He has reportedly claimed dues of Rs 410 million.

The court has also directed the company to come clean about its business dealings and various rights related to its latest film Bol Bachchan scheduled to release on 6th July. According to insiders, the film has been acquired by Fox Star Studios for a whopping price of 720 million.

A trade analyst, on conditions of anonymity, said that the release of the film may not be affected at this juncture since on record the film has already been ‘delivered‘ by the processing lab Reliance MediaWorks Ltd.

It is a common film industry practice these days when an aggrieved creditor approaches the concerned film lab to block the delivery of the film until his dues are paid.

The film is directed by Rohit Shetty and stars Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan (in double role), Asin and Prachi Desai.

  • Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Jannat 2 took a good opening on Friday but the foul words in dialogues and generally indifferent word of mouth failed to better its opening day collections.

The film collected Rs 240.5 million over the weekend. However, the collections have started showing a marked drop on Monday.

The other Friday release, Fatso, remained ordinary at the box office.

Last week’s release, Tezz, has been rejected by audiences, despite the success of lead actor Ajay Devgn’s last film Singham. Looks like it is the Desi action with a cause that works, not the mindless Western kind.

Tezz has been poorer than most films starring a popular hero in the lead. It ended its first week with Rs 147 million, after adding a meagre Rs 29 million in four days.

Vicky Donor continued to do excellent business and collected Rs 117 million in its second week to take its total to Rs 259 million.

Hate Story’s sizzling scenes failed to lure and the film just about managed to stay afloat in second week with a collection of Rs 19 million, taking its total to Rs 130 million.

Housefull 2 contributed a reasonable Rs 47 million in its fourth week. Its total box office collections stood at Rs 1.15 billion.

Bol Bachchan to release on 6 July

MUMBAI: Ashtavinayak Cinevision and Ajay Devgn‘s upcoming film Bol Bachchan is being readied to release on 6 July.

Devgn chose to release the film in July considering the fact that the month has been extremely lucky for him in the past. His last release Singham hitcinemas last 22 July and turned out to be an instant hit and crossed the Rs 1-billion mark in its seventh week.

The film, said to be inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee‘s 1979 film Gol Maal, stars Abhishek Bachchan, Asin, Archana Puran Singh, Prachi
Desai, Krishna Abhishek and Ajay Devgn.

  • Tezz is a poor film with disaster written all over it

Tezz is a poor film with disaster written all over it

MUMBAI: As the title suggests, Tezz is inspired by the Hollywood film Speed, which in turn was inspired by Hollywood film Runaway Train and the Japanese film, The Bullet Train. Some inspiration is also taken from popular American TV series 24, but that is where the comparison ends.

    Producer: Ratan Jain.
    Director: Priyadarshan.
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Kangna Ranaut, Boman Irani, Zayed Khan, Sameera Reddy, Mohan Lal

The theme was picked up by BR Films to make The Burning Train which, though being a novel idea for the Indian audience at that time and boasting of a mammoth star cast, bombed badly.

Tezz comes at a time when English movies are dubbed in various Indian languages and the subject offers no novelty. What is more, the story is based on a faulty premise.

Ajay Devgn is an illegal immigrant in London but having married a UK citizen, Kangna Ranaut, he is expecting legal status soon. He is also a crusader for other illegal immigrants who he feels have come to UK seeking a brighter future and should not be sent back as the local authorities have been doing after raiding their hideouts.

In one such raid, Ajay Devgn manages to help Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan escape but he is taken away and despite his explanation that he was married to a citizen and was awaiting his papers, he is packed off to India. With a feeling that he has been denied an opportunity to make a life for himself, he decides to plant bombs on a passenger train and extort a huge ransom from the UK authorities! Now this is not the kind of story heroes are made of – or films.

It is not only the East India Company that an Indian has taken over; they also are the main thrust behind its police and railways. Once Devgn plants the bombs on the train with 500 passengers on board, London police needs to recall a just-retired cop, Anil Kapoor, to handle the case. The head of signal system on the railway is also an Indian, Boman Irani, and his pre-teen daughter is on the same train too (that is the emotion quotient in the film).

As the ransom demand is being complied with, Kapoor is busy chasing Devgn and his accomplices- Khan and Reddy- and Boman Irani negotiates with Ajay Devgn. When Kapoor is asked to come alone and deliver the ransom amount, he goes with a fleet of police cars with sirens blaring and cops in fluorescent jackets. Is he the best London police have? As the alternative ways to save the passengers are used, there is nothing that you have not seen in a number of films. As Zayed Khan and Sameera Reddy have been martyred in the cause of illegal Indian immigrants in UK and having got his ransom amount, Devgn decides to call off his threat and get back to his wife and the child she gave birth to in his absence. But Anil Kapoor has still to fulfil his obligation, which is to apprehend Ajay Devgn and send the message that crime may get you 10 million Euros but won‘t let you live to enjoy it!

The script is full of loop holes, lacks logic and is treated equally shoddily by Priyadarshan. Initially, exchanges between Indians and their British counterparts are in English which later turn to Hindi and those uncomfortable with English miss the very purpose behind the events to follow.

Music is out of sync and a Mallika Sherawat item number has been forced in as if censors wouldn‘t pass a film without one. If at all the film offers anything worth watching, it is two chase scenes, one with Sameera Reddy and the other with Zayed Khan. The cinematography is good. Boman Irani, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan are passable; Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn disappoint. Kangana Ranaut has nothing much to do. Mohanlal playing a cameo as a cop escorting a criminal on the targeted train is wasted.

Tezz is a poor film with disaster written all over it.

Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi is one boring charade

Producers: VM Final Vut Entertainments, K Sera Sera.
    Director: Rakesh Mehta.
Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Ranvir Shorey, Pradhuman Singh, Manu Rishi, Neha Bhasin.

Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi is an attempted comedy bringing together four characters, Kay Kay Menon, Ranvir Shorey, Pradhuman Singh and Manu Rishi with Neha Bhasin adding the glamour angle.

These four characters converge in Mumbai on their own agenda. Kay Kay Menon wants to avenge the murders of his parents. Manu Rishi is here to apprehend some Nigerian drug peddlers. Ranvir Shorey, a chef in UK, has returned to be with his lady love. Ajoy Ghosh is a wannabe rock star.

The four are expected to create laughter and regale the viewer; they do nothing of the sort and come up with one boring charade. Mumbai background is not exploited well.

The film has opened to a ‘no audience no show‘ welcome.

  • Citylight Cinema to open in new avatar after 7 years

Citylight Cinema to open in new avatar after 7 years

MUMBAI: Citylight cinema, which was once the loved cinema hall for people around Shivaji Park Matunga and Mahim areas in Mumbai, is all set to open to the public after a seven-year hiatus in a refurbished look with the Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn-starrer Tezz.

The old 750-seater theatre has made way for a single screen 250-seater theatre. The new avatar of the cinema hall will have enhanced Dolby surround sound system, UFO satellite transmission, plush seating,
ample parking space and all the other frills that multiplexes offer such as a food court.

The cinema hall, which opened in 1942, used to screen classics such as Baiju Bawra and Anarkali. In the later years, filmmakers including the Barjatyas considered the theatre lucky for premiering their films.

Their blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun ran at the theatre for 33 weeks here.

In its heydays the theatre would attract cinema lovers from the entire Mahim-Matunga-Dadar area. But in the first decade of the new millennium, the cinema hall lost its patronage to the frills that multiplexes offer. The single-screen theatre finally shut down in 2005.

It was sold by Kishan Panjabi, who inherited it from his father Narayandas, to builder Shyamjibhai Gogri, who redeveloped the property. While commercial offices were set up on the ground, first, second and third floors, the fourth and fifth levels were kept for the new Citylight cinema.

  • Akshay Kumar to remake Malayalam film

Akshay Kumar to remake Malayalam film

MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar has approached Priyadarshan to remake in Hindi The Arab, The Camel and P Madhavan Nair that the director had helmed in Malayalam.

Confirming the same, Priyadarshan said, “I am remaking this Malayalam film of mine The Arab, The Camel and P Madhavan Nair in Hindi. That is the last film I did with Mohanlal. Akshay Kumar would feature in the Hindi remake and will also produce it.”

The Arab, The Camel, and P Madhavan Nair is a 2011 Malayalam romantic comedy that stars Mohanlal, Mukesh, Lakshmi Rai and Bhavana.

Meanwhile, Priyadarshan is awaiting the release of his latest Hindi film Tezz on 27 April. The film features Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Zayed Khan and Kangana Ranaut and Mohanlal in a cameo.

Kumar’s move follows Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn who have been engaged in remaking films from South India.
