    Mumbai: Formerly a popular RJ, Artist Karishma Gangwal is all set to make her red carpet debut at this year’s Festival de Cannes, in support of the Indian Film industry and the country.

    Hailing from a Kashmiri family from Jammu and representing India, Karishma’s journey from the Valleys to Radio to now Cannes is a true example of sheer dedication and hardwork. Being one of the very few Indian artists at a global event like Cannes is another huge achievement unlocked for Karishma.

    Growing up, she has always been inspired by watching legendary actresses like Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Aishwarya Rai walk the prestigious red carpet for years now. Given her debut, she is being styled by ace celebrity stylist Ayesha Nigam in graceful custom pieces from globally recognised Indian origin designers.

    Sharing her excitement, Gangwal said, “Stepping into the world of entertainment as an artist where I’m able to represent India at such prestigious events, feels surreal. I’m looking forward to exploring international movies and also supporting Indian cinema at the Cannes Film Festival.”

    The global event will be taking place in the second week of May in Cannes, France.

    EndemolShine India to produce Miss World Festival 2024

    Mumbai: In an exciting development for the global entertainment industry, the Miss World Organization has officially appointed EndemolShine India as the producer for the upcoming 71st Miss World Festival, a global extravaganza that will be streamed and telecast across the world. This marks a significant milestone as the prestigious event returns to India after 28 years, promising a grand celebration of female achievement and women’s empowerment. Branding, sponsorships, and media buying for the festival will be managed by Adsplash Media Pvt Ltd.

    Scheduled to take place between 18 February and 9 March 2024 the festival will be hosted across several spectacular venues, including the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The series of events will kick off with “The Opening Ceremony” and “India Welcomes the World Gala” on February 20th, hosted by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) at the stunning Hotel Ashok in New Delhi. The festival will culminate with the dazzling 71st Miss World global finale at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on 9 March.

    This monumental event, renowned for propelling the profiles of eminent personalities like Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, and Manushi Chillar, has been pivotal in enhancing India’s stature on the global stage. The Miss World pageant, established in 1951, extends beyond traditional beauty contests, fostering a new paradigm focused on empowering women through humanitarian service.

    The 71st Miss World Festival will feature various competitions and charitable initiatives, emphasizing the qualities that make these young women ambassadors of change. Each contestant will have their own media channel on the MissWorld.com platform, allowing them to showcase why they should advance to the Top 20 finalists.

  • Enough potential in urban India before going rural: L’Oréal Paris

    MUMBAI: It was 1993 when French beauty brand L’Oréal Paris made its way to India. An instant hit with the newly privatised economy, the brand has been a favourite of Indian women in the ensuing two decades.

    Considered as a young player in India’s cosmetics market, L’Oréal is the fastest-growing beauty company in the company with an annual average of 30.2 per cent and has representation in over 800,000 points of sale. It is the third leading operator in the Indian cosmetics market with a 10 per cent market share in the urban areas, claims the company.

    The beauty and personal care market in India is valued at Rs 81,000 core. The India revenue of L’Oreal, according to industry estimates, is currently Rs 3,000-3,500 crore a year. In order to cater to the Indian market optimally, the cosmetics group has, over the years, launched several brands across various product categories.

    In order to be up-to-date, L’Oréal follows a combination of traditional and new-age media for marketing and advertising. L’Oréal Paris general manager Raagjeet Garg says that the company looks at television, digital, social media platforms, digital videos, outdoor and other BTL media to connect with consumers.

    The brand invests heavily on marketing every year and the number is only increasing yoy to ensure it reaches a wider number of consumers and with a differentiated campaign. Going forward, the company will look at creating more India-specific products.

    L’Oréal is trying to shake off the luxury brand image. As a matter of fact, its products start at Rs 3 (for a sachet of shampoo).

    In interior India, the brand faces stiff competition from local products but the brand is still pursuing urban consumers since the saturation point hasn’t yet been hit. Garg says, “There is enough potential to get enough consumers in the urban population before we start targeting the rural areas. The objective eventually will be to speak to as many consumers as possible but that will happen in a phased manner and we want to get the urban and tier 1, tier 2 markets first and then talk about the rest of the consumers around the country.”

    The L’Oréal Paris brand encompasses the four major beauty categories — hair colour, cosmetics, hair care, and skin care — and includes brands as Excellence Crème, Total Repair 5 hair care, Pure Clay masks, White Perfect, Fall Repair, Revitalift, Volume Million Lashes mascara, Color Riche lipsticks, Superliners and True Match foundations among many others.

    With its signature phrase, “Because We’re Worth It”, the brand wants to inspire women to embrace their own unique beauty and reinforce their sense of self-worth.

    India being a strategic country for L’Oréal international, it picked the right A-list Bollywood actresses as brand ambassadors – Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. These women encompass a wide range of target audiences in terms of age group and lifestyle.

    The brand also recently celebrated 21 glorious years as the official make-up partner for the Festival de Cannes. Garg says, “I think if the relationship is beautiful, you just want to nurture the relationship and that’s exactly what we do with Cannes. Each year we realise it is only getting better and better.”

    The Cannes Film Festival will take place from the 8 to 18 May where Padukone will be walking the red carpet for the second time along with Rai-Bachchan, who will be completing 17 years at the festival. Kapoor will be seen for the eighth time at Cannes along with other spokespersons including Julianne Moore, Helen Mirren and Doutzen Kroes.

    Garg pointed out that Cannes association is not ROI driven or to create brand visibility but rather to democratise that beauty is for everyone. The company will soon be making its Cannes collection available at its L’Oréal Paris counters and some e-commerce sites in India.

  • Wizcraft ties up with Tussauds S’pore for interactive IIFA

    MUMBAI: As the audience awaits for the upcoming IIFA Festival New York 2017 in New York City, IIFA exclusively partners with Madame Tussauds Singapore to Celebrate Bollywood with the world’s first permanent IIFA Awards Experience.

    The new interactive zone was officiated by Bollywood megastar and Friend of IIFA Anil Kapoor, a five-time IIFA Awards winner as he unveiling his wax figure from Slumdog Millionaire. This is the first time the figure will be shown to the public in a Madame Tussauds attraction. His figure will be in Singapore for a limited period only, before he will be featured in Madame Tussauds Delhi, due to open soon in 2017.

    Renowned actor Anil Kapoor said, “It is an incredible honor to unveil my wax figure from Slumdog Millionaire at the world’s first interactive IIFA Awards Experience in Singapore at the iconic Madame Tussauds.”

    NEW DELHI: Regional films did exceptionally well at the box office in 2016 and Malayalam cinema particularly a major rise, if one is to go by online bookings for tickets.

    Online movie ticketing for Malayalam cinema showed over 80 per cent growth as compared to in 2015, according to tickets sold by online entertainment ticketing brand BookMyShow.

    However, the Rajinikanth starrer Kabali (Tamil) was the only regional film that made it to BookMyShow’s Top 10. The Shahrukh Khan starrer Fan was ranked 14th

    While Kabali (Telugu) was the most sold regional film, Natsamrat (Marathi) was the top rated

    Thus, regional and even Hollywood films did well during 2016 apart from Bollywood, according to the ticketing brand.

    This was directly mirrored through millions of ratings and reviews that BookMyShow received on its platform this year.

    While Sunday remains the best day of the week to watch a film and Friday to Sunday are the preferred days by cinegoers, 2016 threw up a surprise when Monday proved to be the fourth most popular film-watching day in comparison to 2015 when Thursday had reserved this honour.

    Viewers generally preferred a 7:00 pm show on any given day of the week but the most perfect day and time combination for movie watching was Saturday at 10:00 pm.

    Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: Youthful fun in parts

    MUMBAI: ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ deals in romance and music, something that Karan Johar is good at. What is different here is that this film is not about the usual pursuit of love till the families object, then agree and all ends on a happy note. 

    The film is also not about sacrifices made in the cause of love. The film is supposed to be about contemporary romances where the characters falling in and out of love are on the rebound, the sufferers of failed love. Ranbir Kapoor’s character, however, is a bit different, he seems to fall in love with anybody on two legs wearing skirts.

    The film has mostly music-oriented characters in that Ranbir Kapoor is an aspiring singer, Fawad Khan’s character is a DJ while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s is a shayera. The film is splashed with a generous dose of old hits used to fit in the situation. The film is also peppered with cliché-ridden dialogue from old films for fun.

    Ranbir is the son of a rich father with even a private jet to his command. In the UK to pursue a course in business management, he meets Anushka Sharma at a pub. 

    Acquaintance made, Anushka leads him to the pub’s loft with ideas of her own. As kissing begins, Anushka finds Ranbir clumsy and is instantly put off. Anushka has however taken a liking to Ranbir and plans to meet again as friends. 

    Ranbir is accompanied by his live-in girlfriend, Lisa Haydon, and Anushka is with her family’s choice of a suitor for her, Imran Abbas. The film being about fickle or uncertain relationships.

    While Ranbir keeps falling deeper in love with Anushka, she looks at him just as a friend so what if they share the hotel room and bed. That is when, while at a pub, Anushka spots her ex, Fawad Khan, the DJ. Old love is rekindled and they decide to tie the knot. Ranbir is dispatched home heartbroken.

    Ranbir is at the airport where he meets Aishwarya, a divorcee. After some romancing with Ranbir, Aishwarya realizes that she still loves her former husband Shah Rukh. 

    The film starts off with promise and is breezy while Ranbir chases Anushka as most of it is light banter between the two with the use of popular old songs. Come the second half and his romance with Aishwarya is mostly insipid. It is towards the winding-up that the film loses track totally as it gets into a rut bringing in cancer as a compromise conclusion.

    The script follows the formula once the initial novelty of modern day Muslim characters played by Anushka, Aishwarya, Fawad and Shah Rukh, living a trendy European lives, ride the merry-go-round of relationships. 

    Direction shows the Karan Johar’s touch in ambience, music and locales but lacks solid control once the script falters. Dialogue, especially the one-liners, is effective. 

    The music is a plus point with some good lyrics as songs like “Ae dil hai mushkil…”, “Bulleya…, Channa mereya…” and the Breakup song have popular appeal. 

    Cinematography is good. Editing wise the film sags often.

    Ranbir is cast in a role he has been doing wittingly or otherwise through most of his career; here he lives that role. Anushka excels. Aishwarya is okay. Shah Rukh, Fawad and Lisa Haydon have small parts to be or relevance.

    Shivaay…Uphill task! 

    Shivaay is an action thriller. Actor Ajay Devgn wields the megaphone and, when that happens with an actor’s home production, his aspirations as well as ambitions exceed his range as an actor as well as his commercial potential in most cases. 

    Also, when it comes to nurturing such an ambition, the inspiration tends to come from foreign films. If one maker finds inspiration in a popular theme, many others would have too, leading to the theme being exploited threadbare leaving no novelty in the subject.

    Ajay Devgn’s character is that of a mountaineer. He is a sought-after trekker with explorers from all over coming to him. On one of his expeditions, Erika Kaar (a TV actor of Polish origin), is among the climbers under his wing. The climb and attraction between Ajay and Erika are rising on the same scale.

    As is the norm in any such risky situation, women are the first to be seen to safety and Erika should have been among them. But, not having her with Ajay would have stalled the progress of the narrative.

    The romance in a suspended tent has its effects and Erika, who was packing up to return to her native Bulgaria (in the film she is from Bulgaria) is now pregnant. While Ajay is very keen to have his child, having no family to call his own, Erika wants to have none of it since she has responsibilities of looking after her mother and kin back home.

    Erika agrees to deliver the child on the condition that, once delivered, she will return home and have nothing to do with the child ever again. The girl child, Abigail Eames, is now eight years old. She is speech impaired but is bent on seeing her mother. 

    She is a stubborn child and also apple of Ajay’s eye. He takes her to Bulgaria but Erika is nowhere to be found. Bulgaria seems to be notorious for kidnap and trade of children and Abigail is kidnapped. Ajay’s attempt to save her results in one long action chase but the kidnappers foil his attempts. 

    Most of what follows now is action and stunts to save Abigail. There is some attempt at creating melodrama at the end, just as there is some in the beginning of the film, but it does not quite work out.

    Shivaay tells a familiar story seen on a regular basis in many films and on crime-based television serials. Coating it with romance, adventure, emotions, locations and stunts worth millions don’t change the essence. What it does is to stretch a predictable story to an old-fashioned 172-minute length.

    The scripting is loose and allows a lot of liberties without logic. Like, Ajay’s expertise with mountaineering was expected to be used extensively to save the girl considering it takes a lot of footage initially. However, it has just one brief sequence when it is used. 

    Direction by Ajay Devgn himself shows no spark, no moments of genius; instead, it borders on routine. The penchant for locations and stunts is well justified by cinematography team. Songs have no place but are inserted anyway. The editing is slack.

    This is an Ajay Devgn film all the way and he tries to be at his expressive best with the cameras going in tight close-ups on him. He is good in action as always. Erika Kaar is good in romantic scenes. 

    Vir Das as a computer hack is bad and so is Saurabh Shukla as the Indian ambassador.
    Shivaay tries to cram in too much and loses its grip on the narration in the process. It is certainly not an entertainer to regale the Diwali audience. Also, the film needs total acceptance to better Ajay Devgn box office average figures.

    Shivaay…Uphill task! 

    Shivaay is an action thriller. Actor Ajay Devgn wields the megaphone and, when that happens with an actor’s home production, his aspirations as well as ambitions exceed his range as an actor as well as his commercial potential in most cases. 

    Also, when it comes to nurturing such an ambition, the inspiration tends to come from foreign films. If one maker finds inspiration in a popular theme, many others would have too, leading to the theme being exploited threadbare leaving no novelty in the subject.

    Ajay Devgn’s character is that of a mountaineer. He is a sought-after trekker with explorers from all over coming to him. On one of his expeditions, Erika Kaar (a TV actor of Polish origin), is among the climbers under his wing. The climb and attraction between Ajay and Erika are rising on the same scale.

    As is the norm in any such risky situation, women are the first to be seen to safety and Erika should have been among them. But, not having her with Ajay would have stalled the progress of the narrative.

    The romance in a suspended tent has its effects and Erika, who was packing up to return to her native Bulgaria (in the film she is from Bulgaria) is now pregnant. While Ajay is very keen to have his child, having no family to call his own, Erika wants to have none of it since she has responsibilities of looking after her mother and kin back home.

    Erika agrees to deliver the child on the condition that, once delivered, she will return home and have nothing to do with the child ever again. The girl child, Abigail Eames, is now eight years old. She is speech impaired but is bent on seeing her mother. 

    She is a stubborn child and also apple of Ajay’s eye. He takes her to Bulgaria but Erika is nowhere to be found. Bulgaria seems to be notorious for kidnap and trade of children and Abigail is kidnapped. Ajay’s attempt to save her results in one long action chase but the kidnappers foil his attempts. 

    Most of what follows now is action and stunts to save Abigail. There is some attempt at creating melodrama at the end, just as there is some in the beginning of the film, but it does not quite work out.

    Shivaay tells a familiar story seen on a regular basis in many films and on crime-based television serials. Coating it with romance, adventure, emotions, locations and stunts worth millions don’t change the essence. What it does is to stretch a predictable story to an old-fashioned 172-minute length.

    The scripting is loose and allows a lot of liberties without logic. Like, Ajay’s expertise with mountaineering was expected to be used extensively to save the girl considering it takes a lot of footage initially. However, it has just one brief sequence when it is used. 

    Direction by Ajay Devgn himself shows no spark, no moments of genius; instead, it borders on routine. The penchant for locations and stunts is well justified by cinematography team. Songs have no place but are inserted anyway. The editing is slack.

    This is an Ajay Devgn film all the way and he tries to be at his expressive best with the cameras going in tight close-ups on him. He is good in action as always. Erika Kaar is good in romantic scenes. 

    Vir Das as a computer hack is bad and so is Saurabh Shukla as the Indian ambassador.
    Shivaay tries to cram in too much and loses its grip on the narration in the process. It is certainly not an entertainer to regale the Diwali audience. Also, the film needs total acceptance to better Ajay Devgn box office average figures.

    The event will be held on 2 October, the second anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan launchand the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India Today Safaigiri Awards and Singathon will be a daylong event and will get musicians together to celebrate the Safaigiri movement. The biggest names in music will come together to spread the “Safai ki Dhun”.

    Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai and Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information & Broadcasting union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu will be the key note speakers at the India Today Safarigiri Awards. They will also be presenting the awards to the Clean India Champions.

    The event will be highlighted by the Safai Singathon with singers performing throughout the day. The singers attending the daylong event include – Mika Singh, Adnan Sami, Sukhwinder Singh, Kailash Kher, Shalmali Kholgade, Shilpa Rao, Rekha Bhardwaj, Hans Raj Hans & Himesh Reshammiya.
