No plans to enter corporate farming business: Reliance

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries Ltd has moved a petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court today, seeking the government’s intervention to bring a complete stop to acts of vandalism by miscreants, who destroyed some of its telecom towers in the states a few days ago.

“Taking advantage of the ongoing farmers’ agitation near the national capital, these vested interests have launched an incessant, malicious and motivated vilification campaign against Reliance, which has absolutely no basis in truth,” the conglomerate said in a statement.

While thanking authorities for their action against the vandals, Reliance has sought punitive and deterrent action against miscreants and vested interests in its plea to the high court.

“These acts of violence have endangered the lives of thousands of its employees and caused damage and disruption to the vital communications infrastructure, sales and service outlets run by its subsidiaries in the two states. The miscreants indulging in vandalism have been instigated and aided by vested interests and our business rivals,” it claimed.

Reliance has asserted that it has nothing to do with the three farm laws enacted by the Centre, and in no way benefits from them. It added that its subsidiary Reliance Retail, Reliance Jio Infocomm has not engaged in any “corporate” or “contract” farming in the past, and has no plans to enter this business in future.

The Mukesh Ambani-owned company clarified that it has not purchased any agricultural land, directly or indirectly, in Punjab/Haryana or anywhere else in India, for agricultural purposes. It further mentioned that it does not purchase any food grains directly from farmers, and has never entered into long-term procurement contracts to gain unfair advantage over farmers or sought that its suppliers buy from farmers at less than remunerative prices.

“Reliance and its affiliates fully share and support the aspiration of Indian farmers to get a fair and profitable price on a predictable basis for what they produce with exemplary hard work, innovation and dedication. Reliance seeks significant augmentation of their incomes on a sustainable basis, and pledges to work towards this goal. Indeed, we shall insist on our suppliers to strictly abide by the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism, and/or any other mechanism for remunerative price for farm produce, as may be determined and implemented by the government,” the company said.

The conglomerate’s statement comes on a day the government was scheduled to hold talks with protesting farmers in New Delhi. This round of discussions, too, proved inconclusive; the next meeting will be held on 8 January. Meanwhile, farmers have declared their intention to further intensify their movement.

  • Green TV to go the AFP way, soon

Green TV to go the AFP way, soon

MUMBAI:  India’s first agriculture oriented private TV channel launched on 21 October has already managed to penetrate 11 per cent of the total TV homes in the country.

However, the channel headed by Nomad Films managing director Junaid Memon, has not been able to get any advertiser on board but it soon plans to change that. “Within the next few days you will see some advertiser funded programmes on Green TV,” says Memon. However, unlike other channels, they won’t be entertainment or news shows but awareness-based programmes that will educate farmers.

It is looking at one year tie ups with brands wherein shows will be created on ground first and then aired on the channel. Though he did not wish to reveal the names, he says that talks are on with FMCG brands. Memon says that the channel is not going by conventional advertising since is very limiting. “What we can offer is allowing brands to meet their buyer. We are beyond just a TV channel, we can offer two-way communication,” he says.

“We are picking people from agriculture institutes and then teaching them how to talk to the farmers and how to create shows for TV,” he adds. Currently, the channel has about 160 people which he soon looks to increase to 250.

The primetime bands are morning 9 am to 12 pm and evening 4 pm to 7 pm with about six hours of original content being produced now. It will be soon taken up to eight hours. Morning shows consist of business, commodity market and daily updates on crop, afternoon is targeted to women with health and education programmes and evening is dedicated to information based technical shows. Memon advises that ‘agriculture’ is just a word but the channel’s scope involves a variety of things including horticulture, pisciculture, etc. All programmes are being shot in HD but currently telecast only in SD.

The research team consists of 13 people, which he will be increasing to 23 by January. The group CEO is Ravi Bhatnagar, programming head is Nitin Sukheja, sales head is Sudeep Bhattacharya, and distribution head is Devinder Verma.

It is soon going to bring on board an ad sales company. The marketing for the channel will begin in January with creatives being done by Guava Creative Solutions.
So far, its distribution team has seeded about 2000 of the targeted 8000 boxes to LCOs.

It is also closing in on deals with two DTH operators.

  • ICAR wants channel dedicated to agricultural programmes

ICAR wants channel dedicated to agricultural programmes

MUMBAI: When India’s first TV channel went on air –pubcaster Doordarshan- one of its most popular programmes was Krishi Darshan which till date runs on its national channel.

Taking a step further, now, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has decided to urge the Centre and Planning Commission to come up with a TV channel that will be dedicated for airing programmes related to agriculture. ICAR says that it wants to make the farmers of the country aware of modern farming techniques that will benefit their crops.

“We have been urging for an agriculture TV. They ask whether there was enough content and who would watch the channel. There are over 65 crore farmers in the country and if each of them are given 10 minutes, we have enough content for long,” ICAR Director General S Ayyappan said in an interview to PTI.

The report also said that nearly Rs 300 crore was needed to set up such a channel. However, Ayyappan believes that due to the size of the country and the number of farmers, it will benefit them a lot.

Currently, Krishi Darshan airs everyday at 5:30 pm on DD National. However, a fully dedicated channel that can reach out to farmers would lead a lot of advancement in the profession of farming.
