Paan Sing Tomar nets Rs 40 mn at BO in dull week

MUMBAI: The week was crowded with as many as four releases, despite a dull period. While all the films had poor or nil opening response, Paan Singh Tomar seems to have found some favour with the audience.

The athlete-turned-dacoit film opened poorly on Friday with figures well under Rs 10 million; however, the second day showed a marked improvement with Sunday collections more than doubling. The film closed its first weekend with a little over Rs 40 million.

London Paris New York had an unimpressive opening coming as it does during exams and, hence, missed out on its target audience. The film could not manage to improve much during the weekend to finish with Rs 34 million.

Diary of a Butterfly and Will You Marry Me found no takers.

Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya collected Rs 112 million in its first week; most of it came from the first three days. Jodi Breakers slid further after the weekend to collect Rs 84 million in its first week.

Ekk Deewana Tha, Married To America and ? (Question Mark) showed a token presence in their second week.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu collected Rs 13.5 million in its third week to take its three-week tally to Rs 406.5 million; released as a joint venture between the producer and Hiralaxmi Films with the all-India theatrical price determined at Rs 250 million, the film may fall short by about Rs 50 million.

Agneepath added Rs 5 million in its fifth week to take its total collections to Rs 1.20 billion.

Tere Naal Pyar Ho Gaya nets Rs 73 mn

MUMBAI: Tere Naal Pyar Ho Gaya opened to weak houses but thanks to Sunday collections, which were almost double of its opening day. The film managed a net collection of Rs 73 million in the opening weekend.

Jodi Breakers had a similar low opening but did not benefit much on Sunday and collected Rs 60 million in its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Ekk Deewana Tha remained poor with the first week collections at Rs 44 million. Both Married To America and ? (Question mark) had disastrous starts.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu collected Rs 70 million in its second week to take its total to Rs 383 million.Agneepath added Rs 15 million in its fourth week, taking its four-week tally to Rs 1.19 billion.

  • Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu nets Rs 355 mn in 10 days at BO

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu nets Rs 355 mn in 10 days at BO

MUMBAI: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, which collected Rs 313 million in its first week, could not make much of the poor oppositions in its second weekend due to the word of mouth going against it.

The film‘s shows were curtailed or cancelled at many cinemas except in metros. Opening with just about Rs 5 million on the second Friday, it adds little over Rs 40 million to its seven day total taking its 10 day tally to Rs 355 million.

Meanwhile, with its poor content all round, no music to back this love story and a weak lead pair result in Ekk Deewana Tha being rejected outright. Opening to poor response, the film manages a weekend of just short of Rs 30 million.

The other two releases, Married 2 America and ? (Question mark) just added to statistics of number of releases, while Valentine‘s Night went unnoticed.

Gali Gali Chor Hai collected Rs 4 million to take its two week total to Rs 49 million; a disaster.

Agneepath got some benefit of poor oppositions to collected Rs 67 million in its third week; its three week total now being at Rs 1.18 billion.

The Dirty Picture added Rs 7 million in its 11th week taking its total to date to Rs 846.1 million.

Dharma Productions lines up 3 releases in 2012

MUMBAI: Dharma Productions has had a terrific start in 2012 with the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Agneepath entering into the Rs 1-billion club.

Karan Johar‘s production house and UTV Motion Pictures are releasing the Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor-starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu on 10 February, two weeks after Agneepath hit the screens on 26 January.

Later during the year, Dharma Productions will be releasing a couple of films. Their next film, Student of the Year, is already in news with the selection of a complete new star cast comprising newcomers like Varun Dhavan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra.

Dharma Productions will release Ayaan Mukherji‘s next directorial venture, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, this year.

Agneepath is first 2012 release to enter Rs 1-billion club

MUMBAI: Agneepath is the first 2012 release to enter the Rs 1-billion club. The Hrithik Roshan-starrer, produced by Dharma Productions, has become the 10th film to have joined the prestigious club on the 11th day of its release.

The Rs 1-billion club opened in 2008, when Ghajini and 3 Idiots achieved identical numbers within nine days of their release. 2010, however, saw only two films, Dabangg (10 days) and Golmaal 3 (14 days), achieve the magical figure.

Last year turned out to be a heartening period for all big ticket films. Ready (15 days), Singham (7 weeks), Bodyguard (7 days), Ra.One (10 days) and Don 2 (15days) succeeded in joining the Rs 1-billion club in quick succession.

With the exception of Ready, most of the films that reached the Rs 1-billion mark were released on a national holiday followed by a 4-5 day weekend. While Salman Khan’s Bodyguard released on Eid, Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One opened on Diwali and his Don 2 released on Christmas.

Incidentally, Agneepath released on Republic Day.

    Small releases turn big flops

Mumbai: Considering its making and face value, Gali Gali Chor Hai, made at an unseemly budget of Rs 190 million, stands to lose almost all with a poor opening weekend of about Rs 24 million and exhibitors looking to withdraw the film from cinema halls due to poor audience attendance.

Love You To Death got a very poor box office response.

With a seesaw like first week of ups and downs in collections, Agneepath finally managed to finish its first eight days at Rs 880 million with a major chunk of Rs 230 million coming from its 26th January opening day. The second weekend is faring well at select centres with collections of about Rs 130 million.

Players collects a token Rs 500,000 in its fourth week to take its tally to Rs 290.5 million.

Don2, coming at the end of its run, has collected Rs 500,000 in its sixth week to take its total to Rs 1.115 billion.

Dirty Picture mopped up Rs 1 million in its ninth week, taking its total to Rs 838.5 million.

Agneepath grossed ?347,000 in UK in its first weekend (4 days), which is the highest opening weekend collections for any ‘15‘ rated Indian film. Agneepath is also ranked No 10 on UK Top 10 Box Office.

In the United States, the four-day first weekend collections are $1.3 million, reflecting a healthy average of $10,000 plus per theatre. In UAE too, Agneepath has grossed over $ 800,000 in four days, indicating the enormous support consumers have shown for this film. Produced by Dharma Productions, Agneepath has been directed by Karan Malhotra and released across cinemas worldwide on 26h January.

In India, the movie had mopped up approximately Rs 620 million till the end of the weekend with an all-time high opening day collection of Rs 230 million.

Agneepath nets Rs 620 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Agneepath, a remake of the 1990 film of the same title from Dharma Productions, has taken an outstanding opening, making the most of its release on Thursday, 26 January, the Republic Day holiday.

The opening day collections touched an all time high of Rs 230 million. However, due to lack of appreciation and bad worth of mouth, the film registered a drastic drop of over 50 per cent over the next two days.

The collections of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer gained some respectability on Sunday to end the weekend at approximately Rs 620 million.

Meanwhile, Chaalis Chaurasi has collected Rs 6 million in its second week, taking its total to Rs 27 million.

Ghost remains reasonably steady and manages to stay above the Rs 10 million-mark in its second week to collect Rs 13 million. Its two-week collections stand at Rs 81 million.

Players added Rs 25 million in its third week, taking its total to Rs 290 million.

Don 2 collected a symbolic Rs 8 million in its fifth week. The movie has so far netted Rs 1.11 billion.

The Dirty Picture added Rs 4 million, ending with Rs 837.5 million over eight weeks.

  • Agneepath remake fails to impress

    Agneepath remake fails to impress

MUMBAI: What would justify remaking a commercial flop, Agneepath, earlier made with the reigning star of that era, Amitabh Bachchan? It seems the producers felt disappointed with the audience verdict and eventually decided to remake the film and prove the audience wrong! No business involving crores is worth doing on emotional grounds, least of all filmmaking.

    Producer: Hiroo Yash Johar, KaranJohar.
    Director: Karan Malhotra.
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Om Puri, Zarina Wahab,

The plot is the same old: set in Mandwa village, off Mumbai‘s coast, with its honest teacher, Dinanath Chavan and the usurper, Kancha Cheena. Sanjay Dutt is Kancha Cheena here, with a devilish getup just so that an impression is made of his sinister character. He frames the noble school teacher in a child molestation case leading to his public lynching from a village tree.

Having established the villain and his macabre ways, the process to build the angry young hero begins. It is done easily enough as Hrithik Roshan commits his first crime even before reaching teens, that of shooting a cop.

However, it is the other villain, introduced in the form of Rishi Kapoor, who remains sketchy. Introduced as the one in flesh trade auctioning young girls to shady and filthy-looking buyers, suddenly he is a drug lord and ‘owns‘ Mumbai.

Hrithik Roshan has a goal which he never discloses but the viewer somehow knows. His ultimate aim is to kill Sanjay Dutt and free the locals of Mandwa from his slavery. Therefore, once introduced, Sanjay Dutt goes invisible till post-interval when he will be needed to close the story he started by killing the village teacher.

The romantic link sans any romance on screen is provided by Priyanka Chopra who, like all angry young heroes‘ beaus, has to hang around in the background till needed for a song number or an emotional scene, both of which are scant and flat whenever attempted. There is the mandatory honest cop, Om Puri, who knows everything wrong that is happening around him but never gets the go ahead to do anything.

The story demands that the hero do it, not the police. Rishi Kapoor has refused to do business with Sanjay Dutt and bad blood exists between the two. Hrithik Roshan joins Rishi Kapoor with the aim of playing one against the other, which will lead him to Sanjay Dutt. Hrithik starts his campaign by betraying Rishi Kapoor, killing his son and heir and later Rishi Kapoor when the drug lord finds out about the betrayal. What happens hereafter is that the film, already patchy and dull, goes haywire.

Eventually, Hrithik invites himself to Mandwa to confront Sanjay Dutt, gets slashed by a sword four times. He is bashed up for most of the last few reels as he is led to the village tree to be lynched like his father when, like a bolt from the blue, he rises again. He fells Sanjay Dutt with a couple of blows and then hangs him from the same tree as his father.

The close-up expressions of Sanjay Dutt while Hrithik prepares to hang him seem to suggest, “I could have got up 10 times in so much time and bashed you up so better finish fast whatever it is you have to do!”

Agneepath is a huge comedown on its original which itself was no great shakes; a vengeance story without a solid cause does not work, especially if the grudge is worth nursing for 15 years and translates to nearly three hours of screen time. The director seems to emulate many 80‘s directors of mass movies. His prime inspiration seems to be Mukul Anand, the director of the first Agneepath. Here, director Karan Malhotra also seems very fond of filling up the screen with crowds, may it be a fight scene or a song.

Songs are no help in the film and the choreography is bad; the much touted item number by Katrina Kaif, Chikni Chameli, falls flat. And there is no indication of the relevance of the Ganpati procession sequence and song to the story. The film lacks finesse with everything about it being drab. As for actors, Hrithik Roshan has been grossly misused. He has to look sullen all the time and talk less: the famous Rober Mitchum look which Sunny Deol did convincingly.

Sanjay Dutt only emerges as a caricature, carrying his one evil look throughout the movie. Rishi Kapoor is the only one who stands out despite the limitations of his role. Priyanka Chopra, Zarina Wahab, Om Puri and others are incidental to the happenings. A massive session of editing could have helped to some extent.

Agneepath the remake offers nothing worth liking it for and is grossly less watchable over its original.
