Television welcomes over 850 new advertisers in July 2021: BARC India

Mumbai: The ad volumes for July 2021 registered 23 per cent growth vis-à-vis July 2019 and 14 per cent growth over July 2020, according to BARC India’s THINK report titled ‘July ’21 Ad Volume Analysis’. Followed by the strong positive trend for television ad volumes in H1 2021, July 2021 re-affirms advertisers trust in the medium, it said.

July 2021 witnessed 15 per cent growth against June 2021, recording the highest growth for the period June to July, since 2018. With 869 new advertisers in July 2021, 2153 advertisers and 3558 brands were actively advertising on television, resulting in a total of 145 million seconds of ad volumes.

“Ad volumes for July are promising, and this has further fueled growth for the industry,” said BARC India head for client partnerships and revenue, Aaditya Pathak. “Owing to a significant increase in the number of new brands and advertisers turning to television, the share of new entrants in the overall pie is the highest in July 2021 over the last three years. Moreover, combined ad volumes for January to July 2021 are also the highest since 2018, with 1019 million seconds. Data continues to encourage the market’s confidence in TV as one of the most trusted mediums for advertisers.”

E-commerce, education, and agriculture categories have registered the highest ad volumes in July 2021, over the same period for 2019 and 2020.  Ad volumes for auto, retail, telecom products, and computers categories continue to revive steadily. With 2.01 million seconds ad volumes, Delhi Skill & Entrepreneurship University, a new entrant, found itself a spot in the top 10 advertisers for July 2021. While all language genres have registered positive growth, Punjabi, Assamese, English, and Southern languages genres led this growth in July over June 2021.

  • Advertisers demand good news on TV

Advertisers demand good news on TV

Mumbai: 2020 was a tough year for industries across the board, including media and entertainment.

Most observers believed that television news would be immune to the killing nature of the novel corona virus. After all anxious TV news viewers were following minute-by-minute updates about Covid2019’s life threatening rampage and the scores of carcases that were piling up in hospital mortuaries or cemeteries and the by banks of the Ganges – in the virus’ wake. However, this quest for covid2019 updates died soon thereafter as depressed and disturbed TV watchers wanted some better tidings. But that was not to be: controversy after controversy made the top news on daily bulletins 24×7. Net result: viewership of news TV went down south, as did advertising.

Freedom of expression is a cherished and valued fundamental right. Yet, certain news media outlets have often wielded it to cast aspersions, and run media trials and ended up portraying the accused as guilty, thus irking TV viewers even more. Then there are the high-decibel studio debates, which often end up with no conclusion except for some attention-grabbing visuals.

Many a commentator, politician, socialite and influencer bemoan the dumbing down and degradation of TV news. As do a section of viewers.  Listen to what eye comfort and eyewear ecomm fim Lenskart, media head, Anupam Tripathi. has to say.

“Negative programming on news channels is bound to affect a certain set of audience that is niche or more mature to an extent.”

Berger Paints India, general manager – marketing, Sudhir Nair agrees that that the overly dramatised content catalysed viewers to  cut down on TV news during the pandemic, and it was the lack of new content that actually made them switch to digital and social media outlets for the latest.

So what is the way out? One way out is to present developments in a positive way, talk about the good that is going on in society and government, focus on how life is getting better, not worse, points out Tripathi.

“Unlike the DD days when everyone in the family was glued to a television set for any form of content, the younger lot now has the option to switch to another screen. So if the news channels do not take up the challenge of making their programming more positive and interesting, they might lose this audience. It is important to remember that today the competition is not with other genres, it’s with every other device that is selling news,” adds Tripathi.

Nair goes as far as to say that it’s about time that the TV news sector reinvents its programming and the way it approaches news stories. “it would be great if we could see more positive and inspiring stories,” he adds.

According to most marketers, a news channel must also bear in mind that it too is a brand which has to take care of its goodwill and credibility and provide a safe environment for TV commercials.  In the past there have been examples where advertisers have either individually or collectively announced that they would refrain from advertising on channels that got into unnecessary controversies. Hence the importance of responsible programming.

Hence, says a marketer, that it’s interesting that some news networks have announced that the new offerings from their stable will present news through a positive lens, not just a critical, doubting one.  Droom CMO Mohit Ahuja welcomes this trend, adding that “news media is among the top three advertising mediums because of its high reach and affinity among our target group.”

That should be good news for those who are coming up with channels offering good news.

  • Pocket Aces finds growth in brands seeking performance marketing

Pocket Aces finds growth in brands seeking performance marketing

NEW DELHI: The lockdown saw a double whammy – people stuck at home with an appetite for content and the inability to venture out and satiate that demand. While content creators tried to produce new and interactive content, this also gave an opportunity for brands to engage with online audiences by working with content creators. Pocket Aces VP sales and brand solution Vishwanath Shetty spoke to Indiantelevision.com on the new trends and shifts being observed in brand engagements in the pandemic and the change in consumption patterns among viewers.

As everything went into lockdown, shooting from home emerged as a new trend. According to Shetty, “Working remotely has been a great learning experience for all of us as we experimented with different methods of production and created content that was lockdown-friendly. During this phase, we have been able to maintain a steady flow of operations over the last four months. Our first piece of content produced remotely along with a popular whiskey brand saw a phenomenal response. We garnered over four million views on Filter Copy and around 215,000 conversations, as well as an engagement ratio of about 5.78 per cent, which motivated us to know that we are on the right track.”

There has been a different set of advertisers showing interest as well. “The lockdown has created a unique opportunity for brands to reach out to users through innovative ways and introduce new products specially catered to the needs of the hour. Ready to eat foods, dating apps, edutainment and ed-tech dominated this list. Fitness portals and health brands are actively promoting across channels. The new ‘big thing’ in the market today is Covid2019 insurance, a new offering from insurance brands, which is being widely advertised,” he shares.

“A lot of other large companies are also moving budgets internally, to promote relevant products, while staying sensitive to the situation at hand.  Food delivery aggregators and services have also increased their marketing and advertising activities. While on a less grand scale, festive sales will still take place, which will, of course, be boosted across channels. So, advertising spends while reduced in some areas, have gone up in others,” he adds.

Shetty asserts that it would be wrong to say that there has been absolutely no impact of the pandemic on the advertising industry. “Across the board, we have seen spends on OOH, TV, and others significantly drop. As brands and channel partners, we need to relook at our strategies and create value propositions that are mutually beneficial. Essential services and technology-powered brands will be drivers of the economy this year and will be the ones to invest in advertising. Brands are now focusing more on performance marketing, which is the need of the hour and this will continue to drive conversations and spends during the festive season and the rest of 2020.”

He shares that the second season of Firsts was entirely shot at the actors’ homes, and they saw 30 per cent more views than the first season. “As a result of the success, brands saw this as a good opportunity to engage with their target audiences and in this manner, we continue to produce short format shows. The more such content we uploaded, the higher our engagement rates went, even touching over 13 per cent.”

The brand's content channels have seen an overall 20 per cent rise in figures. Shetty shares, “The increase in views can also be attributed to curiosity, as audiences were exposed to new formats, which piqued their interest, and contributed to the success of our lockdown content.”

Pocket aces eSports platform Loco has seen a huge uptake when it comes to the amount of content being streamed. Partnerships with influencers too brought in new users, and today it has 24 million registered users with an average time of 30 minutes spent on the app.
