adidas announces Mirabai Chanu as face of ‘Stay In Play’ campaign

Mumbai: Sportswear major adidas has announced Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu as the face of its ‘Stay In Play’ campaign as it unveiled its latest product innovation designed to keep more menstruators in sport in a bid to tackle one of the greatest taboos faced by women in sports.

The brand’s new TechFit Period-Proof tights feature an absorbent layer to help protect against leaks when worn with a tampon or pad, giving women athletes the confidence to stay in play throughout their menstrual cycle, said adidas.

The sports brand found that teenage girls are dropping out of sport at an alarming rate, with one of the key reasons being fear of period leakage. Using these insights, adidas set out to create a product that helps athletes stay in sport throughout their cycle by giving them an added layer of protection.

Talking about the new campaign launch, adidas – India senior director, Sunil Gupta said, “It is our commitment to revolutionise our product offering and services to better support the needs of our diverse women community. Our ambition with this product is to keep women in sport by giving them the confidence to train during their period.”

Excited about the launch campaign, Mirabai said, “I am thrilled to see the products which will help girls break barriers and be in action. The desire to stay in play no matter what the situation has always been my priority. Seeing these product innovations from adidas, I feel confident that we will help girls all over the world to stay in sport.”

After over two years of development and rigorous testing carried out at each stage of the journey, the TechFit Period-Proof tights were developed using new adidas Flow Shield technology, with the aim to give athletes added confidence whilst training through their period. A wicking layer, absorbing layer and leakproof layer work together to provide protection, whilst a bonding frame holds each layer together and keeps the tights in place, the brand said in a statement.

The collection is made available in India from 15 August on adidas website and select brand stores.

adidas, Mirabai Chanu inspire more women to join weightlifting

Mumbai: With her latest win at Tokyo Olympics 2020, India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has emerged as an inspiration for countless women who shy away from sports such as weightlifting that are perceived as being male-dominated. Breaking the norm, Chanu chose to go with her strength and passion and took it as a challenge to overcome this bias.

The sports superstar recently visited the adidas store at Vasant Kunj Promenade mall in Delhi, where she met four aspiring women weightlifters to share with them her narrative of ‘Impossible Is Nothing’. During the interaction, Chanu spent time hearing out their aspirations, the challenges they face and what inspired them to take up weightlifting as a sport.

Sharing her journey and experiences to motivate them, the Olympics medalist said, “My journey from a remote village to representing our country at an international sporting event clearly showcases that sport doesn’t care about gender or stereotypes. I want women to dream and believe in themselves to be able to see possibilities.”

adidas pledges 1% of global net sales from football to Common Goal charity

MUMBAI: Global Sportswear brand adidas announced a long-term partnership with the charity, Common Goal to help drive lasting social change for under-served communities, creating a better and more inclusive future through football. Based on a shared ambition to maximise the sport’s contribution towards a more equitable and inclusive world, adidas has pledged one per cent of its global net sales from footballs to the charity until 2023.

Common Goal was launched in 2017 when a single player, Juan Mata of Manchester United and Spain, committed to pledge one per cent of his salary to a collective fund that invests in high-impact community organizations that use football to empower young people. The collective has grown to almost 200 players and managers, including Serge Gnabry, Pernille Harder, Paulo Dybala, Timo Werner, Casey Stoney MBE and Jurgen Klopp. To date, over €3M has been generated by the movement and invested in football-based charities that support the United Nations Global Goals.

The organisation will then work with adidas Football Collective – the brand’s purpose platform in football. Together they will use the game to support and grow football communities around the world to accelerate and measure a promise to fight racism and discrimination, power gender equality, foster mental well-being, and promote LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Common Goal CEO and co-founder Jürgen Griesbeck said: “This partnership with adidas represents a shift in the football industry. Social impact has moved to a high priority for football stakeholders. adidas has shown its leadership by investing in Common Goal and together we can scale and accelerate football’s contribution towards the Global Goals. We believe that anything is possible if we work together as one team.”

In the initial three-year period of the partnership, adidas and Common Goal will support grassroots community organizations across the globe, via a network of 140 high-impact football NGO’s in 90 countries. The aim is to directly impact 90,000 lives through a series of projects and strategic focuses on removing inequality, improving access, and working towards greater gender parity.

adidas director for Communities and Culture Gonzalo Calvo said: “At adidas, we are committed to creating change through football. We cannot do this alone, however, and therefore look to individuals and organizations with a shared commitment to action, such as Common Goal. This is a team effort, and it was important to announce this partnership and our ambitions for it during the most collaborative and inclusive football tournament in European history. This is just the start.”

Manchester United player and adidas athlete, Juan Mata, co-founded Common Goal in 2017, helping to mobilise a movement that has grown to now include well over 200 members and fellow professionals. He said of today’s announcement: “I’ve been a part of the adidas family for many years and with Common Goal from the very beginning, so this collaboration is very special. This partnership will help us to use football as a force for good and come together to try and tackle social issues as one. This is really only the start. For me, team play is the most important thing and through solidarity, empathy and effort, I believe that anyone can reach their goals. Our ambition is to make Common Goal the biggest football club in the world, where everyone is welcome.”

This partnership announcement is the final chapter in adidas’ UEFA EURO 2020 campaign and long-term commitment to inspiring a movement of people to see – and push towards – a more positive and inclusive world through sport.

To join adidas and Common Goal at the starting line, fans can purchase a football at www.adidas.co.uk/balls for their one per cent to be contributed toward social change causes.

  • adidas film celebrates differences at UEFA Euro 2020

Mumbai: Apparel brand adidas unveiled the first in a series of short films, as part of its new UEFA EURO 2020 campaign to inspire fans, players, and communities to build a more positive and inclusive world by celebrating the differences that make people unique.

The rallying cry began on Friday with the pre-tournament short film calling all athletes and fans together to celebrate, and push for, inclusivity through football. The film focuses on the unique power football has in bringing people together and creating opportunities to drive positive change, beyond the pitch and within society.

Through the film, players from the world over are seen playing in an exhibition of the Niforia, the official match ball of UEFA EURO 2020TM. Launched to complement the original tournament timings, the ball offers homage to the coming together of teams of footballers from different countries and varied origins, bearing the coordinates of several stadiums that will host the momentous and incredible European sporting history.

adidas football head of global brand marketing Matt Davidson said: “Since we started on the journey towards UEFA Euro 2020TM, a lot has changed, but one thing that hasn’t has been the excitement for a major tournament. Perhaps the excitement for this tournament is even greater than normal, due to what the world has been through. UEFA Euro 2020TM will show us once again what is possible when we come together & celebrate the power of sport – the thrills, the emotion, the respect. The Uniforia ball remains a symbol for how we can unite through sport & culture, and also celebrate what makes us different.”

The campaign is part of adidas’ wider refreshed brand attitude to inspire optimism with action against the key focuses of sustainability, inclusivity, and credibility. It encourages us all to see the world, not as it is today, but how it could be.

  • Adidas inspires the world to ‘seeing possibilities’ through global film series

Adidas inspires the world to ‘seeing possibilities’ through global film series

MUMBAI: Global sportswear brand Adidas has introduced the evolution of its long-standing brand attitude, Impossible Is Nothing. Told in bold, human films, Seeing Possibilities is about rebellious optimism, rooted in the purpose from Adidas in the power of sports to change lives.

Told in the documentary style of home footage, the series provides a previously unseen side to some of the most documented individuals in the world, enabled via a powerful narrative delivered by friends or fellow athletes, and animated via resurfaced footage from the archives. Featuring intimate moments, it follows stories in sport and culture, showing how optimism and action has shaped their lives. Exploring the future they imagined for themselves and making it a reality, the series celebrates the trailblazers that have made history on a global stage. More importantly, it aims to inspire others, empowering them by this collection of very human stories as a powerful demonstration of what optimism can achieve.

Sportsperson Hima Das saw the possibilities in being the first Indian athlete to win gold at the IAAF World U20 Championships which inspires others to see the possibilities of globally succeeding in sport wherever they come from. An icon and a trailblazer in athletics, her personal win was also a win for the community she was raised in, and for everyone in the small towns of the world that are seeing the possibilities to create magic moments on a global stage.

Bollywood superstar and youth icon Ranveer Singh saw the possibilities to cut through stereotypes and make it big, while defying cultural expectations, which inspires people to express themselves. Ranveer only sees open doors – and then blasts straight through them. A rank outsider, self-made in the entertainment business, he has carved his name in the history of Indian cinema over the span of a decade with his incredible era-defining performances.

Beyoncé saw the possibilities of inviting all of us to find our voice. To use her platform as a stage to celebrate our differences with all people.

Demonstrating how this attitude lives within adidas’ own DNA, several of the films explore what this means for innovative design – reimagining what a world-record beating distance shoe could be with the adizero Adios Pro, or how to help end plastic waste in collaboration with Parley’s CEO Cyrill Gutsch.

With the brand’s purpose and attitude at its heart, adidas recently unveiled plans against its three strategic focuses to creating a better future for sport through sustainability, credibility and inclusivity:

Building a more sustainable future, with a commitment that by 2024 we will have phased out virgin polyester and only use recycled polyester in all products across the business.

Uniting and including all people in sport, which includes extending adidas’ UEFA contract into Women’s EUROs and Champions League.

Pushing for innovations that have never been done before and then going further, including launching the potential of 3D printed midsoles with 4D4WD and the upcoming products in collaboration with Allbirds.

The episodic content series kicks off 19 April, with new stories dropping throughout Spring into Summer. See more possibilities @adidas and on adidas.com/ImpossibleIsNothing throughout 2021 and beyond.
