    Acting on its mandate

    The NBSA has been cracking the whip on certain complaints filed with the standards body. Here is a example of three cases which were censured by it. Several other examples can be found on the nbanewdelhi.com.

    1. Decision dated 20.12.2012 passed by NBSA regarding complaint dated 14 September 2011 filed by the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust against TV18 Broadcast Limited in respect of broadcast dated 1.8.2011 and subsequent broadcasts in relation to the RGCT – Channels: CNN IBN & IBN7

    The NBSA, accordingly, directed that the Broadcaster be visited with the following consequences:

    (a) The Broadcasters be directed to carry an apology by running the following text (static) on full screen in large font size with voice over (in slow speed) expressing regret for the said telecast on their channels for 5 consecutive days at 9.00 pm sharp on 24.12.202, 25.12.2012, 26.12.2012, 27.12.2012 & 28.12.2012 respectively (IBN7 will carry the apology in Hindi):

    (b) The Broadcaster is issued a “censure” by the NBSA for wilful violation of NBA Code of Ethics & Broadcasting Standards and norms of ethical journalism;

    (c) A fine of Rs one lakh is imposed upon the broadcaster, to be paid to NBA within one week of receipt of this order.

    2. Decision dated 25.10.2012 passed by NBSA regarding complaint dated 21.06.2012 filed by Dr. Kalind Prashar against broadcasts made on Aaj Tak (on 10.6.12) & on IBN7 (on 11.6.12) of a one sided story of a matrimonial dispute – Channels: Aaj Tak

    Insofar as Aaj Tak is concerned, the NBSA held that the channel was clearly in breach of the NBA Code of Ethics & Broadcasting Standards, Specific Guidelines and committed wilful violation of the NBSA Advisory on Reportage of Family/Matrimonial Matters dated 16.9.2011, for the reasons recorded above. The NBSA therefore directs that TV Today Network Ltd. / Aajtak be visited with the following consequences:

    (a)The channel must carry the unedited version of the complainant, prominently for a duration of three minutes at the same time that the first broadcast was made on 10.6.12 i.e. at 6.00 pm for three consecutive days i.e. on 30.10.12, 31.10.12 & 1.11.12 respectively. The complainant’s version must also be preceded by an apology to be tendered by the channel, by running the following text (static) on full screen in large font size with voice over (in slow speed) expressing regret for the said telecast on their channel Aaj Tak.

    (b) Directed the broadcaster to pay a fine of Rs 1,00,000 to the NBA within seven days of receipt of this Order for wilful violation of NBA Advisory dated 16.9.11 on reportage of family/matrimonial matters.

    3 . Decision dated 16.7.2009 passed by NBSA on complaint filed by Eye Bank Co-ordination & Research Centre & Arpan Eye Bank, Mumbai – Channel: NDTV India for breach of the principle of impartiality and objectivity in reporting and (ii) of not ensuring neutrality in reporting.

    Decision:

    a) To run an announcement, expressing regret for the said telecast prominently on their channel NDTV India prior to the commencement of the telecast of the program Mumbai Central stating the following (text to be translated in Hindi).

    b) To also run the apology text on NDTV India on following three consecutive days, an apology/regret as a scroll in legible font and at normal speed between 8.00 pm. and 9.00 pm, five times with a space of 12 minutes each.

    c) To grant to EBCRC and Arpan an opportunity to express their version on the subject matter of the said telecast, by broadcasting EBCRC’s and Arpan’s un-edited version on the subject matter of the said telecast of a duration not exceeding an aggregate of five minutes on the channel NDTV India in the program Mumbai Central.

    d) Proof of compliance of this Order by NDTV by submitting a Compact Disc containing the telecast/apology/regret with particulars of the time and date of the telecast be submitted to the News Broadcasters Association within 15 days of receipt the Order passed by the Authority.

    4. Decision dated 19.10.2011 passed by NBSA on suo motu action regarding telecast of a programme “Will Kanimozhi turn approver” – Channel: Times Now for “conjecture and speculation” in its Prime time debate show News Hour.

    The Authority issued to the said Broadcaster a “censure” for the breaches committed by it and made it clear that any further transgression by the said Broadcaster would be dealt with more severely. 13. The Authority further directed the NBA:

    (a) to send a copy of this Order to the said Broadcaster for noting and for future compliance;

    (b) to circulate this Order to all Members/Editors of NBA;

    (c) to host a summary of these proceedings and of the present Order on the NBA website and to include such summary in the NBA’s Annual Report.

    Ekta Kapoor to set up ICE branch at Bangalore

    MUMBAI: Ekta Kapoor is all set to open a branch of her media school – Institute of Creative Excellence (ICE) – in Bangalore. The institute is already running in Mumbai and Delhi.

    “Almost 15 per cent of total applications to our Mumbai institute come from South and since Bangalore is the hub of South India, we decided to open up a training set up there,” ICE CEO Anurag Gupta said.

    “In the recent past, Bangalore has nurtured models who are very successful in Media & Entertainment Industry today. Keeping that in mind we would be conducting modeling, dance and young filmmakers program directed at children in our Bangalore facility,” he said.

    ICE covers specialisations in acting, modeling, cinematography, direction, editing, production, scriptwriting, sound and visual effects.

    BBC’s teen brand Switch launches new content

    MUMBAI: BBC’s teen brand BBC Switch has announced a raft of new content aimed at 12 to 17-year-olds, across TV and online at bbc.co.uk/switch.

    The first programme to launch in late March/early April on BBC Two will be The Surgery. The remaining content will launch on BBC Two in May.

    New teen talk show The Surgery will be a series of 15-minute programmes linked to BBC Radio 1’s The Surgery, giving British teenagers a voice. The show, hosted by new signing Jeff Leach, will deal with an assortment of topical issues facing teens such as dating, family, social networking, ASBOs, fashion, drinking and drugs, body image, celebs, politics and more.

    Each week, Jeff will have an open and challenging discussion with the teen studio audience, with weekly contributions from teens across the UK. The Surgery will also have a dedicated section on bbc.co.uk/switch, which offers expert advice and practical information.

    Class of 2008 is an observational documentary series that follows six up-and-coming young talented people in London on their creative journeys as they strive to establish themselves as successes in their fields of fashion, music, design, acting, DJing and entrepreneurship.

    The eight-episode series will follow the group and their ups and downs as they try to land record deals, modelling contracts, acting roles, show fashion collections and launch club nights.

    Revealed will be a journalism series of current affairs programmes that give an authentic depiction of the teenage world in the UK today. The show, presented by young journalists Charlotte Ashton and Anthony Baxter, will inform and lead viewers on a journey to make sense of a variety of subjects such as teen alienation, gangs, family life, sex, school and more.

    Kyle XY is a teen drama from the US which will air for the first time on UK terrestrial TV. The show tells the story of a unique teenage boy Kyle, played by Matt Dallas, who has a mysterious past and the family that takes him in.

    Launched in October 2007, BBC Switch is the BBC’s teen service delivering content to 12 to 17-year-olds across multiple platforms, TV, Radio 1 and online.

    Google launches a search product for film, television

    MUMBAI: The world’s most valuable media firm Google has launched a new search interface, specifically created for the film, television and performing arts communities. It is currently under phase three beta development and is now available for use by the general public and entertainment-industry professionals.

    The development team is also releasing the code for the search box so it can be added to related websites.

    Currently titled ‘The Google Film, Theatre, Casting and Performing Arts Search’ this new film and performing arts search engine is an optimised Google search for topics related to film, television and the dramatic and performing arts, including topics such as movies, multimedia, musicals, dancing, singing, and modelling, with a special emphasis on websites focusing on acting, casting, news/gossip, auditions, and jobs in the entertainment industry.

    The Film and Performing Arts Search allows users to filter out irrelevant content and spam, concentrating on search results that are truly relevant to their needs and interests. Although the Google Film and Performing Arts Search will be improved and tweaked significantly over the next year, the site is now ready for use by all entertainment industry professionals and related websites, including actors, casting directors, producers, models, singers, dancers, writers, and directors.

    This new search engine is being developed using customisation tools and options provided by Google, and the search results are presented using Google’s servers and Google-hosted pages. Although Google is not directly funding or legally responsible for the development of the Google Film and Performing Arts Search Engine or for the engine’s independent development team, the developers are enthusiastic about the possibilities of these new niche search tools and resources recently opened up to businesses, programmers, and the general public by Google Inc.

    Entertainment-industry websites can add the Google Film, Theatre, Casting and Performing Arts Search to their websites either as a stand-alone search box or as an integrated part of their current search options. The technology is entirely free, with no options or obligations involved. All entertainment-industry professionals, webmasters, and enthusiasts are encouraged to submit feedback for continued improvements to this new search engine.

    Users will be able to use the Google Performing Arts search box (on any website site that offers the search box, or from the Google Film, Theatre, Casting & Performing Arts Search homepage) to find content that’s uniquely relevant to the site’s readership. Google will bulk up the results using a worldwide search of all sites, with the results weighted by which sites have been added to the engine as “Preferred sites,” along with weights based upon specific tags/refinements/filters and keywords relevant to the entertainment industry. Full sites and/or specific pages of sites are added as “Preferred pages” for the search engine to weight in a positive or negative manner.

    Users and webmasters can recommend what Refinements (aka, tags, filters, or labels) they’d like associated with any given website as a whole, or specific pages of the sites. That way, when users drill-down the search results using Google Refinements/Labels, they’ll be more likely to find relevant pages in the search results. Current Google Refinements under development for the site include the following category labels: Casting, Auditions, Entertainment Jobs, Acting, Dance, Singing, Comedians, Film, Theatre, Cabaret, Writing, Musicians, Models, Television, Entertainment Industry News, and Reviews and Gossip.

    Webmasters that add the Google Performing Arts search-box to their site should contact the search-development team via email; the team will in turn add the site’s URL to the current rotation of websites that link directly from the main graphic that appears at the top of every search-results page. Currently the main graphic links to a Back Stage MySpace page where this Google Search is already being used (www.myspace.com/casting_calls_auditions), but the plan is to change the link once every few weeks to showcase other relevant websites.
