    Wired broadband subscriber base sees turnaround in March; ACT keeps expanding

    KOLKATA: The number of broadband subscribers reached 687.44 million at the end of March with a monthly growth rate of 0.93 per cent, slower rate compared to February. While it stood at 681.11 million at the end of February, it grew at 1.15 per cent that month. Surprisingly, fixed wireless subscribers have jumped up by 2.48 per cent whereas it fell by 1.72 per cent in February. Wired subscriber base has also increased by 0.51 per cent in contrast to a negative trend in the previous month.  

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the telecom subscription data as on March 2020. As per the report, the top five service providers constituted 98.99 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of March. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (388.39 million), Bharti Airtel (148.57 million), Vodafone Idea (117.45 million), BSNL (24.50 million) and Atria Convergence (1.61 million).

    As on 31 March, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL (8.08 million), Bharti Airtel (2.47 million), Atria Convergence Technologies I.e, ACT (1.61 million), Hathway Cable & Datacom (0.97 million) and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (0.87 million). Notably, Atria has been on an upward ride until the beginning of this year. At the end of last December, its subscriber base was at 1.52 million.

    While fixed-line broadband sector was struggling to get new subscribers for the last few years, especially due to surge of high-speed low-cost data offered by telco operators, a Crisil report spoke of a spike in fixed broadband subscriptions since 25 March. While the report has predicted a huge growth, TRAI’s April data will be able to show actual numbers based on reports from operators.

    As on 31 March 2020, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (387.52 million), Bharti Airtel (146.10 million), Vodafone Idea (117.43 million), BSNL (16.43 million) and MTNL (0.18 million).

    BENGALURU: Overall broadband internet subscribers in India grew by 1.866 crore or 2.98 per cent  in the month ended 31 October 2019 (Oct-19) from the numbers reported by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for the month ended 30 September 2019 (Sep-19). TRAI reported 62.542 crore (625.42 million or 6,254.2 lakh) broadband internet subscribers across all segments for Sep-19. This number grew to 64.408 crore (644.08 million or 6,440.8 lakh) in Oct-19 as per the latest numbers published by Trai.

    Subscriber growth for Oct-19 was the third highest over a 22-month period starting Jan-18 until Oct-19 in absolute numbers. In percentage terms, Oct-19 saw the ninth highest growth during the same period. Over the period under consideration in the paper, broadband internet subscriber growth has been on a decline as is evident from the black trend line the graph below:

    The figure below shows the subscriber growth ranking for the months during the period under consideration in this paper in terms of absolute growth numbers as well as per centage terms.

    Trai data reveals that broadband subscribers grew by 1.857 crore (18.57 million or 185.7 lakh) or 3.06 per cent to 62.441 crore in Oct-19 from 60.584 crore (605.84 million or 6,054.8 lakh) in Sep-19 on the Mobiles (Phones and dongles) segment. Wired broadband internet segment grew by 0.007 crore (0.07 million or 0.07 lakh) or 0.37 per cent in Oct-19 to 1.908 crore(19.08 million or 190.8 lakh) from 1.901 crore (19.01 million or 190.1 lakh) in Sep-19. Fixed wireless – WiFi, WiMax, Point to Pont, Radio, Vsat subscribers grew 0.002 crore (0.02 million or 0.2 lakh) or 4.22 per cent to 0.059 crore (0.59 million or 5.9 lakh) in Oct-19 from 0.057 crore (0.57 million or 5.7 lakh) in the previous month.

    Top 5 Broadband Internet Subscribers

    According to Trai data, the top five broadband internet service providers constituted 98.98 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Oct-19. These service providers were Reliance JioInfocom Ltd 36.512 crore (365.12 million or 3,651.2 lakh), Bharti Airtel 13.286 crore (132.86 million or 1,328.6 lakh), Vodafone Idea 11.580 crore (115.80 million or 1,158 lakh), BSNL 2.27 crore (22.27 million or 2,227 lakh) and Atria Convergence 0.149 crore (1.49 million or 14.9 lakh).

    Top 5 wireless broadband internet subscribers

    As on 31 October, 2019, the top five wireless broadband service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd with 36.433 crore (364.33 million or 3,643.3 lakh), Bharti Airtel with 13.045 crore (130.45 million or 1,304.5 lakh), Vodafone Idea with 11.578 crore (115.78 million or 1,157.8 lakh), BSNL with 1.364 crore (13.64 million 136.4 lakh) and MTNL with 0.02 crore (0.20 million or 20 lakh) subscribers.

    Top 5 wired broadband internet subscribers

    As on 31 October, 2019, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL with 0.862 crore (8.62 million, 86.2 lakh), Bharti Airtel 0.24 crore (2.40 million or 24 lakh), Atria Convergence Technologies with 0.149 crore (1.49 million or 14.9 lakh), Hathway Cable & Datacom with 0.087 crore (0.87 million or 8.7 lakh) and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd with 0.079 crore (0.79 million or 7.9 lakh). Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is a new entrant to the top 5 list in October 2019. It replaced You Broadband which had 0.075 crore (0.75 million or 7.9 lakh) broadband internet subscribers in Sep-19. BSNL and Bharti Airtel Limited both lost wired broadband internet subscribers in Oct-19.

    The top five wired broadband internet service providers lost 80,000 subscribers in Oct-19. Since the wired internet broadband subscriber base grew by 70,000 during the same period, other smaller service providers which include MSOs and LCOs must have added 150,000 subscribers in Oct-19.

    BENGALURU: Overall broadband internet subscribers in India grew by 1.719 crore or 2.67 percent  in the month ended 30November 2019 (Nov-19) from the numbers reported by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for the month ended 30 October 2019 (Oct-19). Trai had reported 64.408 crore (644.48 million or 6,440.8 lakh) broadband internet subscribers across all segments for Oct-19. This number grew to 66.127 crore (661.27 million or 6,612.7 lakh) in Nov-19 as per the latest numbers published by Trai.

    Subscriber growth for Nov-19 was the fifth highest over a 23 month period starting Jan-18 until Nov-19 in absolute numbers. In percentage terms, Nov-19 saw the twelfth highest growth during the same period. Over the period under consideration in the paper, broadband internet subscriber growth has been on a decline as is evident from the black trend line the graph below:

    The figure below shows the subscriber growth ranking for the months during the period under consideration in this paper in terms of absolute growth numbers as well as percentage terms.

    Trai data reveals that broadband subscribers grew by 1.713 crore (1.713 million or 171.3 lakh) or 2.74 percent to 64.154crore (641.54 million, 6,415.4 lakh) in Nov-19 from 62.441 crore (624.41 million or 6,244.1 lakh) in Oct-19 on the Mobiles (Phones and dongles) segment. Wired broadband internet segment grew by 0.005 crore (0.05 million or 0.05 lakh) or 0.28 percent in Nov-19 to 1.913 crore(19.13 million or 191.3 lakh) from 1.908 crore (19.08 million or 190.8 lakh) in Oct-19. Fixed wireless – WiFi, WiMax, Point to Pont, Radio, Vsat subscribers grew 0.001 crore (0.01 million or 0.1 lakh) or 0.47 percent to 0.06 crore (0.6 million or 6 lakh) in Nov-19 from 0.059 crore (0.59 million or 5.9 lakh) in the previous month.

    Top five service providers constituted 98.99 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Nov-19. These service providers were Reliance Jio
    Infocomm Ltd with 37.076 crore (370.76 million, 3,707.6 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 13.992 (139.92 million, 1,399.2 lakh) subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 11.989 crore (119.89 million, 1,198.9 lakh) subscribers, BSNL with 2.254 crore (22.54 million, 225.4 lakh)  subscribers and Atria Convergence with 0.15 crore (1.50 million, 15 lakh) subscribers.

    Top 5 Wireless broadband Internet Subscribers

    As on 30th November, 2019, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd  with 36.993 crore (369.93 million, 3,699.3 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 13.751 crore (137.51 million, 1,375.1 lakh) subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 11.987 crore (119.87 million, 1,198.7 lakh)BSNL with 1.402 crore (14.02 million, 140.2 lakh) and MTNL 0.02 crore (0.20 million, 2 lakh).

    Top 5 Wired broadband Internet Subscribers

    As on 30th November, 2019, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL with 0.851 crore (8.51 million, 85.1 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 0.241 crore (2.41 million, 24.1 lakh) subscribers, Atria Convergence Technologies with 0.15 crore (1.50 million, 15 lakh) subscribers, Hathway Cable & Datacom with 0.088 crore (0.88 million, 8.8 lakh) subscribers and Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd with 0.083 crore (0.83 million, 8.3 lakh).Reliance JioInfocomm Limited was a new entrant to the top 5 list in October 2019. It replaced You Broadband which had 0.075 crore (0.75 million or 7.9 lakh) broadband internet subscribers in Sep-19. BSNL lost wired broadband internet subscribers in Nov-19. 

    The top 5 wired broadband internet service providers lost 40,000 subscribers in Nov-19. Since the wired internet broadband subscriber base grew by 50,000 during the same period, other smaller service providers which include MSOs and LCOs must have added 90,000 subscribers in Nov-19.

    Broadband internet subscriber growth petering out?

    BENGALURU: Has the broadband internet subscriber growth in the country started petering out in 2019? Analysis of Telecom subscription data furnished by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) indicates that month-on-month subscriber growth rates are reducing despite the stupendous growth at the start of calendar year 2019 (CY 2019). The latest data from TRAI is for the month ended 30 September 2019 or Sep-19 (month under consideration). Sep-19 saw broadband internet subscribers grow by just 0.999 crore in net absolute numbers, or by 1.62 percent from the previous month Aug-19. In absolute number of subscriber additions, Sep-19 was ranked 15 over a 21 month period and was ranked 17 over the same period in percentage terms.

    During the 21 month period under consideration in this paper, Jan-19 saw the highest number of subscriber additions at 2.149 crore (21.49 million or 214.9 lakh). Jan-19 was ranked third during the 21 month period in terms of percentage growth at 4.1 percent. Mar-18 saw the highest subscriber growth in percentage terms at 5.2%. In absolute numbers, Mar-19 saw the second highest number of subscriber addition at 2.054 crore (20.54 million, 205.4 lakh).

    Broadband Internet Segment Trends

    TRAI has segmented Broadband internet into 3 main platforms, viz. Wired; Mobiles (Phones and dongles); and Fixed wireless- WiFi, Wi Max, Point to Point, Radio, Vsat. As has been the norm, the Mobile (Phones and dongles) had the highest subscriber growth in terms of absolute numbers at 0.929 crore or 9.29 million or 92.9 lakh (at 1.97 percent) in Sep-19 over Aug-19. In percentage terms, the Wired Broadband internet segment had the highest growth in Sep-19 over Aug-19 at 3.96 percent. Please refer to the figure below:

    Overall Broadband Internet Subscribers on all platforms

    The top five service providers constituted 98.96 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Sep-19. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd 35.593 crore (355.93 million, 3,559.3 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 12.783 crore (127.83 million, 1,278.3 lakh) subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 11.219 crore (112.19 million, 1,121.9 lakh) subscribers, BSNL with 2.152 crore (21.52 million, 215.2 lakh) subscribers and Atria Convergence 0.148 crore (1.48 million, 14.8 lakh) subscribers. All the five players saw subscriber growth in Sep-19.

    Wireless Broadband Internet Subscribers

    The top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd with 35.522 crore (355.22 million, 3,552.2 lakh) subscribers , Bharti Airtel with 12.542 crore (125.42 million, 1,254.2 lakh) subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 11.217 crore (112.17 million, 1,121.7 lakh) subscribers, BSNL with 1.282 crore (12.82 million, 128.2 lakh) subscribers and MTNL with 0.021 crore (0.21 million, 2.1 lakh) subscribers. The first four ranks saw their subscribers grow, while MTNL witnessed a flat growth in Sep-19.

    Wired Broadband Internet Subscribers

    The top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL with 0.869 crore (8.69 million, 86.9 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 0.241 crore (2.41 million, 24.1 lakh) subscribers, Atria Convergence Technologies with 0.148 crore (1.48 million, 14.8 lakh) subscribers, Hathway Cable & Datacom with 0.086 crore (0.86 million, 8.6 lakh) subscribers and You Broadband with 0.075 crore (0.75 million, 7.5 lakh) subscribers.

    Wired broadband subscriber base grew by 69,000 according to TRAI data, but the top 5 Wired Broadband Internet players saw their combined subscriber base erode by 80,000. This indicates that the other internet service players which include MSOs’s and LCOs’ added 0.0149 crore (0.149 million or 1.49 lakh). Among the top 5 wired broadband internet players, it was only the public sector that saw erosion of its subscriber base – by 0.01 crore (0.1 million, 1 lakh). ACT and Hathway saw subscriber additions of 10,000, while Airtel and You Broadband saw no fresh subscriber additions.

    Jio, Airtel led wireless broadband subscriber growth in Aug-19

    BENGALURU: MukeshDhirubhai Ambani’s largest startup in the world in the form of Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd (Jio) reported the largest growth in wireless broadband subscribers for the month ended 31 August 2019 (Aug-19) in terms of absolute numbers. The Sunil Mittal headed Bharti Airtel reported the largest growth in percentage terms for the same period. While Jio’swireless broadband subscriber base grew by 0.305 crore (3.05 million or 30.5 lakh) or by 0.9 percent, Airtels’ subscriber base grew 2.3 percent or 0.276 crore (2.76 million, 27.6 lakh) in Aug-31 as compared to Jul-19. The top 5 wireless internet subscriber base grew 1 percent or by 0.612 crore (6.12 million, 61.2 lakh) in Aug-19 as compared to Jul-19.

    Top 5 Broadband Internet service providers across all platforms

    The top five broadband service providers constituted 98.96 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Aug-19. These service providers were Jiowith 34.824 crore (348.24 million, 3,482.4 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 12.67 crore (126.70 million, 1,267 lakh) subscribers, Vodafone Idea with 11.111 crore (111.11 million, 1,111,1 lakh) subscribers, BSNL with 2.15 crore (21.50 million, 215 lakh) subscribers and Atria Convergence Technologies  or ACT with 0.147 crore (1.47 million, 14.7 lakh) subscribers.

    Overall, the country’s broadband subscriber base across all platforms grew 1.87 percent in Aug-19 from Jul-19. Internet through mobiles and phones witnessed subscriber growth of 1.97 percent or 1.15 crore (11.5 million, 115 lakh) during the period under review as compared to the previous month. Wired broadband internet subscriber base declined by 20,000 or by 1.08 percent to 1.832 crore (18.32 million, 183.2 lakh) subscribers from 1.852 crore (18.52 million, 185.2 lakh) subscribers.     The chart below shows the month-on-month (MOM) growth of broadband internet subscribers for a 20 month period starting Jan-18 till Aug-19. During this 20 month period, subscriber base growth was ranked 13 in terms of growth in absolute numbers and was ranked 14 in terms of percentage growth.

    Wired Broadband Internet Subscribers

    As on 31st August, 2019, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL with 0.879 crore (8.79 million, 87.9 lakh) subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 0.241 crore (2.41 million, 24.1 lakh) subscribers, ACT with 0.147 crore (1.47 million, 14.7 lakh) subscribers, Hathway Cable & Datacom with 0.085 crore (0.85 million, 8.5 lakh) subscribers and You Broadband with 0.075 crore (0.75 million, 7.5 lakh) subscribers. BSNL saw its subscriber base decline by 0.026 crore (0.26 million, 2.6 lakh), Airtel saw its base grow by 10,000 to 0.241 crore (24.1 million, 24.1 crore). The other three players among the top 5 wired internet service providers showed no change in the month of Aug-19 as compared to Jul-19.

    Jio continues wireless broadband domination, adds 8.8 mn subs in Nov

    BENGALURU: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani’s largest start-up in the world in the form of Reliance JioInfocomm Limited (Jio) continued to lead broadband internet subscriber growth for the month of November 2018 (month ended 30 November 2018, Nov-18, period or month under review). Jio registered a net growth of 0.88 crore (8.8 million, 88 lakh) subscribers or 3.35 percent during the month of Nov-18. Since 31 December 2017 (Dec-17) or 1 January 2018, Jio’s subscriber base grew 11.146 crore (111.46 million 1114.6 lakh) until 30 November 2018. At present, Jio’s subscriber base comprises of only mobile device users – phones and dongles.

    The Vodafone and Idea merger has made the new entity Vodafone-Idea the second largest wireless or mobile broad services provider in the country after Jio.

    Overall, 1.578 crore (15.78 million, 1578 lakh) net broadband subscribers were added in Nov-18 – India’s broadband subscriber base grew by 3.18 percent in Nov 18.  Subscriber growth was only by mobile device users (phones and dongles) or mobile wireless users. Both wired broadband subscribers and fixed wireless, subscribers bases declined in November 2018

    Mobile device users subscriber base grew the 1.71 crore (17.10 million, 171 lakh) or 3.39 percent during the month under review. India had a mobile device users subscriber base of 49.43 crore (494.30 million or 4,943.0 lakh) at the end of Nov-18 as compared to 47.72 crore (477.2 million, 4,772 lakh) at the end of Oct-18.

    As per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data for Nov-18, the top five service providers constituted 98.56 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Nov-18 as compared to 98.42 percent market share at the end of Oct-18. These service providers were Jio 27.155 crore (271.55 million, 2,627.5 lakh), Vodafone Idea 10.544 crore (105.44 million, 1,054.4 lakh), Bharti Airtel 10.474 crore (104.74 million, 1,047.4 lakh), BSNL 2.045 crore (20.45 million, 204.5 lakh) and Tata Tele Group 0.232 crore (2.32 million, 23.2 lakh). Tata Tele Group has lost broadband internet subscribers in Nov-18 as compared to Oct-18

    As on 30 November 2018, the top five wireless broadband service providers were 27.155 crore (271.55 million, 2,627.5 lakh), Vodafone Idea 10.543 crore (105.43 million, 1,0543 lakh), Bharti Airtel 10.249 crore (102.49 million, 1024.9 lakh), BSNL 1.129 crore (11.29 million, 112.9 lakh) and Tata Teleservices 0.184 crore (1.84 million, 18.4 lakh).Tata Tele Group has lost broadband internet subscribers in Nov-18 as compared to Oct-18.

    As on 30 November, 2018, the top five wired broadband service providers were BSNL 0.917 crore (9.17 million, 91.7 lakh), Bharti Airtel 0.226 crore (2.26 million, 22.6 lakh), Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT) 0.138 crore (1.38 million, 13.8 lakh), MTNL 0.078 crore (0.78 million, 7.8 lakh) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (Hathway) 0.077 crore (0.77 million, 7.7 lakh).The public sector MTNL continued to lose subscribers in Nov-18.

    Jio continues to lead broadband internet growth in Oct-18

    BENGALURU: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani’s largest start-up in the world in the form of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (Jio) continued to lead broadband internet subscriber growth for the month of October 2018 (month ended 31 October 2018, Oct-18, period or month under review). Jio registered a net growth of 1.302 crore (13.02 million, 130.20 lakh) subscribers or 5.4 per cent during the month of October 2018. Since 31 December 2017 (Dec-17) or 1 January 2018, Jio’s subscriber base grew 9.216 crore (92.16 million 921.6 lakh) until 31 October 2018. At present, Jio’s subscriber base comprises only mobile device users – phones and dongles.

    The Vodafone and Idea merger has made the new entity Vodafone-Idea the second largest wireless or mobile broad services provider in the country after Jio. Bharti Airtel is the second largest broadband internet services provider in India if one were to consider its wireless and wired internet subscriber base.

    Overall, 1.442 crore (14.42 million, 144.2 lakh) net broadband subscribers were added in October 2018 – India’s broadband subscriber base grew by 2.99 percent in Oct-18.  

    The largest growth was by mobile device users (phones and dongles) or mobile wireless users, followed by wired broadband subscribers which registered a small growth of 0.011 crore (0.11 million, 1.1 lakh) or 0.60 per cent in Oct-18. Fixed wireless subscribers base declined by 0.0003 crore (0.003 million, 0.03 lakh) or declined by 0.43 per cent in October 2018

    Mobile device users subscriber base grew the 1.431 crore (14.31 million, 143.1 lakh) or 3.09 per cent during the month under review. India had a mobile device users subscriber base of 47.72 crore (477.20 million or 4,772.0 lakh) at the end of Oct-18 as compared to 46.289 crore (462.89 million, 4,628.9 lakh) at the end of Sep-18.

    As per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data for Oct-18, the top five service providers constituted 98.42 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Oct-18. These service providers were Jio 26.275 crore (262.75 million, 2,627.5 lakh), Bharti Airtel 10.139 crore (101.39 million, 1,013.9 lakh), Vodafone Idea 10.133 crore (101.33 million, 1,013.3 lakh), BSNL 2.03 crore (20.30 million, 203 lakh) and Tata Tele. Group 0.251 crore (2.51 million, 25.1 lakh).

    As on 31 October, 2018, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Jio 26.275 crore (262.75 million, 2,627.5 lakh), Vodafone Idea 10.132 crore (101.32 million, 1,013.3 lakh), Bharti Airtel 9.914 crore (99.14 million, 991.4 lakh), BSNL 1.115 crore (11.15 million, 111.5 lakh) and Tata Teleservices 0.199 crore (1.99 million, 19.9 lakh).

    As on 31 October, 2018, the top five wired broadband service providers were BSNL 0.915 crore (9.15 million, 91.5 lakh), Bharti Airtel 0.225 crore (2.25 million, 22.5 lakh), Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT) 0.137 crore (1.37 million), 13.7 lakh, MTNL 0.079 crore (0.79 million, 7.9 lakh) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (Hathway) 0.075 crore (0.75 million, 7.5 lakh).

    The public sector MTNL continued to lose subscribers in Oct-18. As per TRAI data, MTNL’s subscriber base declined by 10,000 during the period nunder review. Among the top 5 wired broadband internet services providers, while Airtel and ACT added 10,000 subscribers each, besides MTNL, the other two players – BSNL and Hathway had no change in the number of subscribers in Oct-18 as compared to Sep-18. However, it is heartening to note that other smaller players, which could include MSOs and LCOs added 0.01 crore (0.1 million, 1 lakh) subscribers in the month.

    Sep-18: Wireline broadband subscriber base continued to fall

    BENGALURU: India’s broadband internet subscriber base increased 3.89 per cent or by 1.805 crore (1805 lakh or 18.05 million) in September 2018 (month ended 30 September 2018, Sep-18, period under review) according to the latest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. There were 48.170 crore (4,817 lakh or 481.70 million) broadband internet subscribers as on 30 September 2018 as compared to 44.518 crore (4,451.8 lakh, 445.18 million) at the end of August 2018. Broadband subscribers through mobile devices such as phones and dongles grew 3.98 per cent or 0.774 crore (77.4 lakh, 7.74 million) in Sep-18 to 46.289 crore (4,628.9 lakh, 462.89 million from 44.518 crore (4,451.8 lakh, 445.18 million) at the end of August 2018.

    Wired internet services lost around 30,000 subscribers (0.18 per cent) in Sep-18 according to TRAI data.  The total number of wired broadband internet subscribers declined to 1.799 crore (179.9 lakh, 17.99 million) in Sep-18 from 1.802 crore (180.2 lakh, 18.02 million Aug-18.

    The number of broadband internet subscribers availing services through WiFi, Wi Max, Point to point, Radio, Vsat increased 81.67 per cent to 0.082 crore (8.2 lakh, 0.82 million) in Sep-18 from 0.045 crore (4.5 lakh, 0.45 million) in Aug-18.

    The top five broadband internet service providers constituted 97.86 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Sep-18. These service providers were Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd (Jio) – 25.225 crore (2,522.5 lakh, 252.25 million), Bharti Airtel or Airtel 9.929 crore (992.9 lakh, 99.29 million), Vodafone 5.182 crore (518.2 lakh, 51.82 million), Idea Cellular 4.79 crore (479 lakh, 47.90 million) and BSNL 2.012 crore (201.2 lakh, 20.12 million). 

    Wireless Internet

    As on 30 September 2018, the top five wireless broadband service providers were Jio 25.225 crore (2,522.5 lakh, 252.25 million), Airtel 9.705 crore (970.5 lakh, 97.05 million), Vodafone 5.181 crore (518.1 lakh, 51.81 million), Idea Cellular 4.789 crore (478.9 lakh, 47.89 million) and BSNL 1.079 crore (107.9 lakh, 10.97 million).     The public sector BSNL continued to bleed subscribers in Sep-18. BSNL lost 0.022 crore (2.2 lakh, 0.22 million subscribers) in the month. BSNL’s wireless broadband internet subscriber base declined 2 per cent to 1.097 crore (109.7 lakh, 10.97 million) in Sep 18 from 1.119 crore (111.90 lakh, 11.19 million). BSNL’s wireless broadband internet subscriber base has declined to just half in Sep-18 from 2.195 crore (219.5 lakh, 21.95 million) as on 31 December 2017 (Dec-17) or 1 January 2018.

    Vodafone’s subscriber base grew by 0.056 crore (5.6 lakh, 0.56 million) in Sep-18 as compared to Aug-18, but has declined by 0.063 crore (6.3 lakh, 0.63 million) as compared to its base as on 1 January 2018. This was because of its merger with Idea cellular in August 2018. The Vodafone India and Idea Cellular combine had to forego about 140 lakh (14 million, 1.4 crore) subscribers in six circles and revenues of more than Rs 2,000 crore in three circles as the merged Vodafone and Idea Cellular entity would breach the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)-prescribed 50 per cent cap on subscribers and revenue in the respective states.

    Wireless Broadband Internet

    As on 30 September, 2018, the top five wired broadband service providers were BSNL (9.15 million), Airtel (2.24 million), Atria Convergence Technologies or ACT (1.36 million), MTNL (0.80 million) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (0.75 million). Three of the top 5 wired broadband internet services providers lost about 10,000 subscribers each, while the other two – Airtel and did not show any growth.

    Airtel added the highest number of wireline broadband subscribers in calendar year 2018 until Sep-18 with 90,000, followed by Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT) which added 80,000 subs during the period.

    Jio juggernaut continued to add as Vodafone shed subs in Aug-18

    BENGALURU: MukeshDhirubhai Ambani’s largest startup in the world in the form of Reliance JioInfocomm Limited, or simply Jio, continued adding subscribers in the month of August 2018 (Aug-18, month under review) according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Telecom subscription data. According to the available Trai data for Aug-18, Jio’s subscriber base had been growing at about 5 percent compounded rate month on month (m-o-m) in calendar year 2018. Aug-18 was no different. Jio’s subscriber base grew by 5.7 percent (5.2 percent in Jul-81) to 2,393.53lakh in Aug-18 from 2,270.50 lakh in Jul-18. Since December 31, 2017, Jiohad added 791.40 lakh subscribers until Aug-18– it grew 49.4 percent in the period.

    In the meantime, Vodafone lost 125.4 lakh (12.5 million, 1.25 crore) subscribers (20 percent) in Aug-18 as compared to Jul-18. Vodafone had a subscriber base of 637.90 lakh in Jul-18, while in Aug-18 the company had 512.5 lakh subscribers according to Trai data. The Vodafone India and Idea Cellular combine had to forego  about 140 lakh (14 million, 1.4 crore) subscribers in six circles and revenues of more than Rs2,000 crore in three circles as the merged Vodafone and Idea Cellular entity would breach the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)-prescribed 50 percent cap on subscribers and revenue in the respective States.

    Trai data for Aug-18 says thatas per the reports received from 296 operators, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 4,602.4 lakh (460.24 million, 46.042 crore) at the end of Jul-18 to 4,636.6 lakh (463.66 million, 46.366 crore) at the end of Aug-18 with a monthly growth rate of 0.74 percent.  Subscriber numbers for all the three broadband services segments – wireline or wired; mobile devices comprising of phones and dongles; and fixed wireless  (Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Point-to- Point Radio & VSAT) grew in Aug-18.     The top five service providers constituted 97.80 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Aug-18. These service providers were Jio( 2,392.3lakh, 239.23 million23.923 crore), Bharti Airtel or Airtel (983.6 lakh, 98.36 million, 9.836 crore), Vodafone (512.5 lakh, 51.25 million, 5.125 crore), Idea Cellular (442.4 lakh, 44.24million, 4.424 crore) and BSNL (203.5lakh, 20.35 million, 2.035 crore). 

    Wireless broadband internet

    Wireless broadband subscribers growth in absolute numbers was led by Jio, followed byAirtel, Idea Cellular and the public sector BSNL. Vodafone was the only player among the top 5 wireless broadband internet services providers that lost subscribers in Aug-18.

    As on 31Aug, 2018, the top five wireless broadband service providers were Jio (2,392.30 lakh, 239.23 million, 23.923 crore), Bharti Airtel (961.2 lakh, 96.12 million, 9.612 crore), Vodafone (512.5  lakh, 51.25 million, 5.125 crore), Idea Cellular (442.4 lakh, 44.24million, 4.424 crore) and BSNL (111.90 lakh, 11.19 million, 1.119 crore).     Wired broadband internet

    Wired broadband internet subscribers grew by 70,000 in Aug-18 as compared to Jul-18 with four of the top 5 Wireline broadband services providers showing growth while one, Mahanagar Telcom Nigam Limited (MTNL) showing a decline in subscribers by 20,000. The top 5 wired broadband service providers added 50,000 subscribers during the month under review, 20,000 subscribers were added by other service providers.

    As on 31 August, 2018, the top five wired broadband serviceproviders were BSNL (91.6 lakh, 9.16million, 0.916 crore), Bharti Airtel (22.4 lakh, 2.24 million, 0.224 crore), Atria Convergence Technologies (13.6 lakh, 1.36 million, 0.13 crore), MTNL (8.10 lakh, 0.81 million, 0.081 crore) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (7.6 lakh, 0.76 million, 0.076 crore).

    Airtel added the highest number of wireline broadband subscribers in calendar year 2018 until Aug-18 with 90,000, followed by Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT) which added 80,000 subs during the period.
