  • BARCs most watched new regional News channels

BARCs most watched new regional News channels

BENGALURU: It is now 4 weeks since Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) started publishing segmented data of regional news channels in 4 languages in the public domain. Three of the languages are from East India – Assamese News, Bangla News and Oriya News and one is from West India – Marathi News. BARC commenced ranking the top 5 News channels in each of the markets represented by theses languages from week 35 of 2018 (Saturday, 25 August 2018 to Friday, 31 August 2018) onward.

The four languages from the middle portion (geographically) of the country represent the following markets/states:

Assamese News: Assam /North East/Sikkim (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

Bangla News: West Bengal (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

Marathi News: Maharashtra/Goa (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

Oriya News: Odisha (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

Geographically, it could be averred that these languages are from the middle regions of India.

Earlier, in week 1 of 2018 (Saturday, 30 December 2017 to Friday, 5 January 218), BARC had commenced publishing its weekly lists of Top 5 News channels for each of four South Indian languages – Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

In the case of the four mid Indian languages, the same five channels were present in BARC’s lists of top 5 News channels of all the four languages during all the four weeks that the data is available at the time of writing of this report. As a matter of fact, for three of the East Indian languages, all the five channels for each language followed the same order of ranks. In the case of Marathi News ranks showed a bit of an anomaly.

In general, the News channel for each of the four languages from mid India that has been ranked one had for more viewers that the channel that was ranked two. There was also a marked difference in viewership between a higher rank and its succeeding rank.

Please refer to the figures below showing how the News channels for each language were ranked and the rounded off average of four weeks weekly impressions in (000s):

As mentioned above there was an anomaly in ranks in the case of Marathi News channels.

It is early days yet to get an accurate measure of the performance of the top 5 News channels of each of the mid Indian languages. Time will  rank the channels more correctly.

  • Mi Marathi to strengthen digital presence; ropes in ABP Majha’s Nilesh Khare

Mi Marathi to strengthen digital presence; ropes in ABP Majha’s Nilesh Khare

MUMBAI: After attaining and retaining the number one spot in the genre for the past two weeks, Marathi news channel Mi Marathi is now looking at strengthening its digital presence.

The channel has roped in former ABP Majha anchor Nilesh Khare, famous for his show Bigg Boss and given him the mandate for the same. In his new role as Mi Marathi editor – digital, Khare will be working with a new team to get the channel’s digital plan rolling.

Khare, who joined the channel last week, will not just be heading the digital team but will also be hosting a show Marathi Bigg Boss on the channel.

“We have a news channel and a newspaper, but now we want to strengthen our digital presence. We have recently launched an app but we will not be taking a regular digital route,” Mi Marathi editor in chief Ravindra Ambekar tells Indiantelevision.com.

The plan, currently in its nascent stage, is to make the digital platform interactive. “We have done a lot of research and found out that one sided communication is not really helpful. While people have switched on notifications to keep themselves updated with news, this has now reached stagnation point. Hence we are looking at making our platform more interactive, where people can voice their opinions,” adds Ambekar.

Mi Marathi will have a separate digital team, headed by Khare. “We should be launching the digital platform in the next six months,” informs Khare.

Talking about his decision to join Mi Marathi, Khare says that it was the young and enthusiastic team that attracted him to associate with the channel.

Mi Marathi will soon start shooting for Marathi Bigg Boss with Khare. “It was a popular show, which he worked on during his stint with ABP Majha. We will be bringing that on our channel now,” informs Ambekar.

Mi Marathi plans to take the show international and plans are afoot to shoot the first episode in Dubai. The programme will feature Maharashtrian entrepreneurs across the globe. “This will be a yearlong show. While currently it is at conceptualization level, we have already shortlisted around 13 entrepreneurs and industrialists in Dubai and so we will start shooting there next month. Post that we will go to the US as well,” informs Ambekar.

  • Narendra Modi on ABP News’ Ghoshnapatra

Narendra Modi on ABP News’ Ghoshnapatra

MUMBAI: ABP News election special- “GHOSHNAPATRA”, brings BJP Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi interacting with the Editors, ABP News, ABP Majha and ABP Ananda on the array of issues in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls 2014. This interview was recorded on April, 20, 2014, Sunday.

Please find below some of the highlights of the interview.

Please note that the interview was in Hindi and the translation in English is indicative. Kindly refer to the detailed intercepts in Hindi on our website http://abpnews.abplive.in/ and for English at http://www.abplive.in/ at 9pm.

Modi on RSS, ‘India First’- “I need to run the government, and the government functions as per the constitution. I believe that there is only one religion for the government- India First. There is only one Holy Book for the government- our Constitution, the government believes in one prayer- “Bharat Bhakti”. There is only one way to governance- “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas”.

Modi on ‘Rajdharma’-  “I have taken it (moral responsibility of any person killed in Gujarat) since day one. All my interviews, speeches (in the assembly) are available. I request you to do some research. Everything is available…you will find answers to all your queries (in those speeches and interviews).”

Modi on being grilled for 9 hours in the 2002 riots case: “you can try me as much (on the 2002 riots), but you wont be able to do it. In 2007, when UPA came into power the second time, I was dragged to Supreme Court due to (political) conspiracy..it was then that I decided not to speak since the Supreme Court must not get influenced. Till date, no chief minister in India has been grilled by police for nine hours…this (me) is the chief minister who has been grilled for 9 hours by police officers. Supreme Court has seen the video recording (of the questioning). I have proven myself on these fronts and will continue to do so in future as well. But I refuse to surrender to lies and political conspiracies.”

Modi on “Muslims scared of Modi”- “You would have my interview in your library (archives) in 2002 (post-winning the Gujarat polls). After winning the polls in 2002, I went to Maninagar in the evening to thank the voters…I said in my speech that day, that this (Gujarat) government belongs to those who have voted for it, against it and even to those who have not voted. The ‘mantra’ for my government is ‘Abhai (fearless), Abhai, Abhai’…I said it thrice.”

Modi On Giriraj- “Nobody can agree with what he (Giriraj) has said”…

Modi on his aggressive personality, issues like Ram Mandir, Uniform Civil Code in the manifesto-  “The country doesn’t work with aggression, the nation works as per the Constitution, country moves forward with constitutional dignity…aggression is meant for polls…not to run the government.”

Modi on- “Acche din aane wale hai”- “Is there an expiry date mentioned everywhere…a (party) manifesto stands for five years, a government is formed for five years…it (government) has to deliver in these five years- some work (projects) is initiated and some work (projects) are meant to be accomplished…It is very clear that a manifesto is not a final declaration of the 21st century (a decade)…it stands for the term of a government.”

Modi on Vadra- “Jeejaji”- “see you will have to acknowledge, how will you acknowledge…if something (Vadra’s alleged growth in real estate) has happened, if there is a connect with the family (The Gandhis), then the connect lies within this word (‘Jijaji’)…I am not aware of any other word (connect), otherwise I would have taken up that…”

Modi on Ambani and Adani: “This is not your question. It is not expected from media to carry forward the agenda taken up by the political opponents. You are expected to talk about how Modi has governed (in Gujarat) for the last 14 years. There was a government where you could find only middlemen (in political corridors)..Modi’s identity is a government where you can not find any middlemen…people of India can proudly say that there is a (state) government which can not be pressurized, which can’t be managed (with money). My 14-year track record speaks for me…at least people like you (media) should should not own such (allegations) things…here I am using the word media.”

Modi on “Shehzada”: “This is weird…this word “Shehzada”…we have read about it in history…around four-five years back, Congress had termed Sonia Gandhi as “Rajmata”…and they continued using the word (“Rajmata”) this for a long time…so now should I question Congress for using these princely terms when those times are long over…It’s fine (no big deal) if they have said such a thing.”

Modi on his marital-status row: “I am not surprised at anything, there is nothing to my (personal) life…since there is nothing much for them (to talk about), they keep talking about (such) things…”

Modi on black money: “there is a word about Indian money stashed in banks abroad…by and large there is no dispute in that. The government has the information on that…but we are not in the government, and those in the government are not responding to it. So our stand is, that we will bring the truth out as we form the government. The rounds will stop if there is nothing to it and if it is (money stashed abroad) then we will get it back.”

Modi on political alignment with Lalu and Pawar- “No, no no…there is no such (political alignment with Sharad Pawar) thing. As far as friendship is concerned, you would be surprised to know that I am friends with Laluji…we exist in a social setup, but we need to take individual stands due to our political ideologies. But this is one big family…and there can’t be any enemies here.”

Modi on support from Raj Thackeray: “As far as the results are concerned on May 16, I firmly believe that we will not need any such support to govern the nation. But you need everyone’s support to run the nation. I am of the opinion that in a democracy, to run the nation, we must rise above politics and take support from everyone, (though) we would not need (support) to the run the government, we will get full support from the people. Even if Rahul wins from Amethi, though the chances of that are bleak, and becomes the leader of Opposition…we will take his support too. In my view, you need to take everyone along to run the nation.”

Modi on firm-handedness with Pakistan: “first and the foremost thing is that we should run the country in such a way that nobody should be able to dare look at us. We need to be balanced (look straight into the eyes at the international level) and that should get reciprocated…that is the best way forward.”

Modi on visting US: ”this is a tough question…yes a very tough question…the country has chosen me to work for the nation.”

  • ABP Majha celebrates excellence in Maharashtra

ABP Majha celebrates excellence in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: “Delhi gave me birth, Mumbai brought me up. This state and this city have made me what I am today,” said superstar Shah Rukh Khan at Majha Sanman Puraskar, ABP Majha’s pioneer initiative which celebrates the contributions of Maharashtrain’s in different fields.

ABP CEO Ashok Venkatramani says, “We started this for recognising all the achievements that Maharashtrians have won, through excellence in their own fields and in the process have brought glory to the nation. It is a great motivator and it elevates people to greater heights that they deserve. We usually look at the last year or two and pick up stories of success and stories of excellence of Maharashtrians or people from the state of Maharashtra.”

The awardees were selected on the basis of excellence in their respective feilds

In its fourth year, the award function was indeed a memorable evening with union cabinet minister Sharad Pawar as the chief guest and Khan as the star attraction along with the ABP family. What more? The grand trophy is designed by eminent artist – Arzaan Khambatta who beautifully captures the dynamism, alertness, and effort of a Mahrashtrian to move ahead and benefit the society at large.

ABP Majha recognises the work of Vijaya Mehta in the field of art

Venkatramani informs,”This is a very well received award. It helps us to bond with our consumers and with our viewers. We are able to bring out unknown stories of excellence which is there all around the state, which otherwise does not get the focus and attention. By rewarding those achievers, we are rewarding not only from ourselves but on behalf of all our audiences.”

(L-R) Kiran Nagarkar, Sharad Pawar and Aveek Sarkar

ABP recognised and felicitated 11 living legends of Maharashtra, who have brought excellence in their chosen fields and have added to the pride of Maharashtra through their immense contribution.
ABP COO Avinash Pandey emphasises: “All the people that we awarded, you wouldn’t find them getting awarded by all sections of the society. These individuals, at their individual level have done extra-ordinary service to the society. And we have recognised their contributions, irrespective of any commercial pressure. We don’t give award to anybody who doesn’t deserve it. And that’s the strength of ABP unlike many other awards which are available in the market.”

Union cabinet minister Sharad Pawar graces the occasion as the chief guest

The awardees this year included various personalities from Maharashtra who contributed greatly to the society in fields like art, literature, music, sports, fashion, entertainment and business. The winners are – Sanjay Nahar in Rashtriya Ekta, Rahi Sarnobat in sports, Sneha Khanwalkar in culture, Shri Milind Kamble in Industrialist, Amrishbhai Patel & Suresh Khanapurakar in social service, Dr. Chetan Chitnis in research, Prabhakar Kolte in Art (painting), Shrimati Vijaya Mehta in Art, and Shrimati Kishori Amonkar in music.

Indeed, this is a wonderful brand property for the network considering that this gives it the opportunity to connect with the Marathi Manus sentiment of ABP Majha’s viewer’s base.

Delhi gave me birth, Mumbai brought me up. This state and this city have made me what I am today, says Shah Rukh Khan

Pandey talks about the importance of the awards from the business perspective. “This award function stands for three things. One, it generates extra-ordinary content for Television; Second, it helps as a party of the society as we are representatives of the society. It is our way of giving back to the society. This is our natural responsibility as a business. Third, it helps my advertisers to integrate well with the cause and the content and deliver a remarkable story to the viewers. This is why from year on year we make it better than what we did last year.”

The evening kicked off with a fabulous performance by Sharbari Dance troop enthralling the audience with traditional Ganesh Vandana. Post this, ABP group chairman Aveek Sarkar shared his vision for ABP Majha and lauded the ceaseless commitment they put towards being a responsible and progressive News channel.

Majha Sanman Puraskar goes on to add a commendable CSR initiate for the ABP network. What does ABP stand for as a news channel in India? Pandey concludes in his response: “I have worked in news companies all my life. ABP is one such company that it does not do anything, unless it adds immense value to the viewer, advertiser or reader. If it is not valuable information, they will not go for it.”
