CASE STUDY: How the ABP Majha & UNICEF tie-up aided Covid relief

Mumbai: The ten-day-long festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is usually one of the most awaited events in Maharashtra. But as the deadly wave of the Coronavirus outbreak swept through the country last year, the celebrations marking the birth of Lord Ganesha were also muted.

To mark the occasion amid the pandemic restrictions in 2020, Marathi news channel ABP Majha, in collaboration with UNICEF launched a special donation drive initiative– ‘Be a Vighnaharta’ (Be a Remover of Obstacles).

The initiative raised funds through a 16-day TV campaign to support the people affected by the pandemic. The funds raised were used to support vulnerable families, through UNICEF’s Jeevan Rath initiative in the state of Maharashtra. The initiative brought over 60 public and private NGOs together to help provide supplies of dry ration kits, conditional cash transfers, and livelihood protection to people who are unable to afford or access these supplies in sufficient quantities.

Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated on 22 August last year. ABP Majha ran the campaign from 6 August 2020 to 21 August 2020. The news channel broadcasted 1,350+ minutes of content including stories of people affected by the pandemic, urging viewers to donate and help reach supplies to the affected families. After launching the heartfelt campaign and donation drive with UNICEF, ABP Majha kept the viewers engaged through special programming and a unique virtual engagement initiative – Bappa Maze Game. It committed to adding more zing to the festivities with its flagship property ‘Bappa Majha.’

The channel broadcasted Live Artis and extensive coverage of Ganapati celebrations last year to keep up the festive pomp and revelry in the bleak scenario of the pandemic, along with telecasting Donation Drive snippets throughout the day. The channel partnered with famous pandals across Maharashtra, such as Siddhivinayak Temple & Dagdusheth Ganapati, to bring the essence of festivities to the viewers’ homes via their TV screens.

Known for beaming exceptional content during the festive season, ABP Majha usually surpasses all channels in terms of viewership within the Marathi News genre. Last year was no different. The channel was armed with a comprehensive line-up of shows including Bappa Tumchya Ghari – A celebrity-engagement show, which brought alive the celebrations of Ganapati directly from the homes of various eminent personalities; Bappa Majha – a show which included a Ganapati News Bulletin and Ashtavinayak Yatra, covering the eight ancient holy temples of Ganesh with celebrities Sachin & Supriya; ABP Majha Pooja – an everyday show which aired the celebrations straight from ABP Majha’s office to forge a special bond with the viewers; and Majha Vighnaharta – an award show to felicitate ‘humans for humanity’, who have positively contributed towards the betterment of their communities.

To further elevate the engagement quotient, ABP Majha hosted a Gharghuti Ganapati Contest, wherein the viewers were asked to send pictures of their Ganapati & Ganapati celebrations. Out of the submissions, 10 best entries were shown on-air and provided with a gift certificate.

On the virtual engagement front, ABP Majha launched an innovative game called Bappa Maze, which is based on the idea that Lord Ganesha is our Vighnaharta and through the game, players can remove the obstacles that come in the way of Lord Ganesha by completing the maze. The game was hosted on the Bappa Majha Microsite. At various places in the game, users get a chance to gather ladoos and other items to win bonus points. To heighten the excitement, Weekly Top 10 Winners on the Leaderboard of the game were then declared on the Bappa Majha Show at 6:30 pm from 22nd August to 1st September 2020.

On the special donation drive, ABP Network CEO Avinash Pandey said, “As a responsible network, we are taking up this initiative as a part of our continuous work in community upliftment. We are committed to making available immediate aid to children and families affected by the pandemic ahead of the biggest festival of India’s financial capital. Festivals are all about vibrancy and high spirits, and during this time, we want to uplift the lives & spirits of low-income groups whose earnings depend on Ganapati celebrations. We hope this effort will help them lead better lives.”

On partnering with ABP Majha, UNICEF chief of Maharashtra office Rajeshwari Chandrasekar said “We are glad to associate with ABP Majha news channel for our initiative ‘Jeevan Rath’ in Maharashtra. The socio-economic cost of the pandemic on the lives of children and their families is extremely high. Through this campaign, we intend to provide relief to the most vulnerable, excluded, and displaced populations in the fight against Covid-19.”

With these unique initiatives in partnership with UNICEF, ABP Majha succeeded in raising funds for the Covid-impacted via its special programming as part of its flagship property ‘Bappa Majha’ in 2020.

ABP Majha celebrates 13 prosperous years

NEW DELHI: India’s long-standing Marathi News channel, ABP Majha, celebrated 13 years of successful operations on 22 June, 2020. By the dint of umpteen flagship shows & initiatives, 24×7 local news coverage and a highly viewer-driven approach, the channel has created strong brand equity in the ferociously competitive market of Maharashtra.

The remarkable journey of the channel witnessed numerous memorable shows such as Aaple Bharat Ratna, which celebrated the maestros of Maharashtra who received the Bharat Ratna Award; Majha Katta, a flagship weekly show which deliberated on the major developments of the society with renowned personalities, and Dahchya Batmya, the daily 10 pm Flagship bulletin of ABP Majha, which has been lauded by the viewers time & again. The riveting formats & timeless appeal of these shows has contributed immensely to the success of the channel.

ABP Majha has always been on the top of its game in terms of delivering exclusive content. It was the first channel to interview Sharad Pawar after the formation of Maharashtra government and conducted many noteworthy exclusive interviews of prominent personalities of the state & nation, such as Ramdev Baba, Sonam Wangchuk, Amir Khan, Ratan Tata, Rajiv Bajaj, and Shankar Mahadevan, to name a few.

Apart from memorable programming & exclusive content, over the years, ABP Majha has also dominated the viewership charts during various major news events. The channel has been a clear No. 1 in its respective segment – a trait it shares with the entire ABP News Network, which has a rich & proven legacy of leadership on big news days.

In 2019, ABP Majha was Maharashtra’s most preferred news channel with 44.6 avg wkly GVMs. In fact, during the COVID-era, the channel has emerged as no. 1, in the Marathi News Genre, and triumphed over all GECs with 32.5 Mn impressions on day of lockdown announcement. These numbers truly reflect the popularity and reach amassed by the channel over the years.

Equally impressive have been the channel’s efforts in creating a meaningful impact on the society through critical initiatives like Majha Shikshan Parishad, the first ever ‘Education E-Conclave’, which brought together various eminent personalities in the realm of education at one platform, to deliberate on the ongoing issues & concerns about the augmentation of educational operations amid COVID-19. Maharashtra Government took note of the solutions that emerged from the conclave and implemented one of them by cancelling the final year examinations, with results to be announced on the basis of aggregate marks scored by the students in the past semester.

During these challenging times, ABP Majha has also been on the frontlines in helping various communities in need. As a result of the COVID-19 instigated lockdown, woeful stories of struggle have known no bounds; from the plight of the migrant labourers to communities stumbling for a morsel of food.

In this vein, ABP Majha brought to light another gruelling story to the fore – that of the blind people of Vangani, whose source of income was entirely dependent on selling things on the trains. After ABP Majha’s coverage and due recognition, the community received great support through local NGOs, individuals & politicians. In fact, BJP Minister Ram Kadam also donated ration for 350 families.

Through these powerful stories & initiatives, ABP Majha has come out as a close ally of the people of Maharashtra during tumultuous times.

On this milestone, Mr. Avinash Pandey, CEO, ABP News Network said, “I’m absolutely elated & overwhelmed to be celebrating this significant milestone in the memorable journey of ABP Majha. It gives me immense pride to reflect on the past 13 years and see the consistency, perseverance and dedication with which ABP Majha has remained on the top of its game, year in year out. • ABP rebuffs link between its report and migrant gathering

ABP rebuffs link between its report and migrant gathering

MUMBAI: ABP News Network has rebuffed any link between a mob gathering at Mumbai’s Bandra West station and a story shown in its Marathi news channel ABP Majha as "entirely misconceived and being circulated with the sole intention of maligning the channel.”

ABP Majha ran a news story on Tuesday morning suggesting that the railways may run special trains for migrant labourers to return to their hometowns. The story was broadcasted hours before prime minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation extending the lockdown till 3 May.

“There is no denial of the railway ministry’s letter of 13 April 2020 recommending running of trains to return migrant labourers to their hometowns,” says the network’s spokesperson in a statement. However, minutes after PM Modi’s declaration of lockdown extension, the channel had run a story about the cancellation of trains and refunds till the extended lockdown ends, the statement also states.

“Subsequent to PM Modi’s announcement at 10 am of the continuation of the lockdown and announcements thereafter from the ministry of railways with regard to cancellation of trains and refunds till 3 May, we ran multiple stories, shortly after the ministry’s announcement from 12.30 – 1.30 pm, on our channel clearly announcing that no trains will be running,” says the network. This story, it says, negated its morning one.

“There is no conceivable way in which the crowds that gathered at the Bandra West station from around 3.45 pm can be linked to our (ABP Majha) stories,” says the network’s spokesperson.

ABP Majha reporter Rahul Kulkarni has been arrested for spreading misinformation and deceiving people. The network, expressing shock and dismay about his arrest, said it “will be taking necessary and immediate steps in law.”

The network further added: “We would like to say that before journalists are arrested there should be due verification of all facts and circumstances.”

The senior journalist, meanwhile, has been granted bail by the court.

As media has been put under the essential services category during this unprecedented crisis, the spokesperson in its statement says: “We can say with full confidence that we have not deviated from practices of responsible journalism, and make every possible good faith endeavour to ensure the accuracy of our information and news from credible sources before broadcasting the same.”

Supporting ABP News Network and its channel’s report, News Broadcast Association president Rajat Sharma, requested Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to drop the charges and release the senior journalist Rahul Kulkarni. The president also urged the state government to instead file a complaint before the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA).

  • ABP News Network’s positive initiatives around COVID19

ABP News Network’s positive initiatives around COVID19

MUMBAI: ABP News Network channels have been implementing an effective strategy to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, and create a positive environment through its initiatives. The channels under its banner are ABP News, ABP Majha, ABP Ananda, ABP Asmita and ABP Ganga.

One of the most heartfelt initiatives from the network is ‘Senior Patrol’, which has been carried out in collaboration with Robinhood Army (RHA). Senior Patrol is targeted towards helping the most senior and susceptible members of the society. Under this initiative, the group delivered essential supplies like food and medicines, among others, to senior citizens amid the lockdown.

The network reporters of all the channels have been at the frontlines in delivering every piece of information to the viewers. This includes an exclusive report on COVID-19 testing kits, wherein the reporters of the group visited a pathology lab to help viewers understand the workings, proceedings, and components of the Mylab testing kit.

Consequently, through continuous efforts, minute-to-minute updates, and comprehensive insights on the pandemic, the network’s digital platform also garnered a whopping 15.7 billion impressions in the month of March (Source: Youtube Analytics), attesting their dominance on the digital front.

ABP News initiated a message-driven campaign called #CoronakoDhona to strengthen the consciousness on the pandemic and ensure the safety of the people. The campaign was successful in spreading awareness on the preventive measures against the spread of the virus through the reach of their news channel and digital platforms. In Facebook alone, the channel accrued 5.42 million interactions and 132.79 million views.

The group also undertook various innovative steps such as ‘Live Bulletins from Home’, to ensure that anchors could work effectively from a safe space during Janta Curfew. In this regard, the ABP Ananda news anchor Suman De also conducted a live show from home, instilling the important message of ‘staying home’ amongst the viewers.

Furthermore, with an intention to eradicate fake news and debunk myths on COVID-19, ABP News took special programming initiatives such as ‘Sachchai ka Sensex’, to apprise the viewers of the facts and separate them from the misleading medical information, rumours, falsehoods, etc.

Another special segment on ABP News called ‘Ghar Ghar Big Boss’ was telecast to subtly share a message on social distancing and staying home, wherein celebrities were interviewed from their respective homes, to create a sense of calm and entertainment for the viewers.

The regional channels of the network: ABP Majha, ABP Ananda, ABP Asmita & ABP Ganga have been equally pertinent in creating a positive societal impact through their thoughtful initiatives.

ABP Majha’s specially-curated show ‘Corona Parishad’ was one such step. The unique show featured eminent doctors from Maharashtra like Padmashree Dr Tatyarao Lahane, Dr Avinash Phadke (Head of SRL Diagnostics), and Dr Pallavi Saple to impart knowledge to the viewers. Through this show, the doubts, concerns of the viewers were addressed along with a thorough understanding of the virus.

The Marathi news channel of the group also conducted exclusive interviews with Maharashtra health minister, Rajesh Tope, on the state government’s plan of action to tackle COVID-19 and also with the state’s home minister Anil Deshmukh on lockdown measures to help fight this battle.

Similarly, ABP Ganga, a regional news channel of the group that caters to the viewers of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarkhand, was on the forefront in generating maximum awareness on the pandemic.  A segment on ABP Ganga called ‘Corona Ke Karam Yodha’ was telecasted to throw light on the unsung heroes of COVID-19, whether they are policemen, doctors, or any other individuals.

Another significant initiative was that of ABP Asmita, a Gujarati news channel of the group, wherein educational lectures were conducted by experts for ninth standard students on Science, English, and Math which were telecast from 2 pm to 3 pm from 19-28 March on the channel.

On the organisational front, the network has taken an abundance of caution to ensure the health & well-being of their employees. They did so by implementing a number of steps including regular office sanitisation, video conferencing in lieu of in-person gatherings, E-invoicing to ensure timely closure of estimates, POs, invoices, and work from home measures.

Despite a myriad of challenges posed by the pandemic, the network’s comprehensive business continuity protocols have ensured seamless operations of all services as efficiently as before. This all-encompassing approach has not only safeguarded the health and well-being of all stakeholders but also prevented any disruption in business operations.

Additionally, the group’s reporters have set an exemplary example for the viewers by using a mic with a stick while interviewing as a measure to encourage social distancing. Also, many interviews were also carried out through instant messaging application – WhatsApp’s video call feature.

ABP News Network chief executive officer Avinash Pandey says: “At ANN, we measure the impact and success of our organisation through the kind of influence we have on our viewers and the larger society. For us, nothing comes above the support and aid to people and communities in the time of need.”

“Through these initiatives, our aim was to safeguard the health of the people, spread maximum awareness, create a positive societal impact, and most importantly, fulfill our long-standing commitment to deliver the best at all times,” Pandey adds.
