Box Office: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ zooms past Rs 200 crore

MUMBAI: While most films shy away from releasing immediately after a much expected blockbuster is released in theatres, the small but critically acclaimed film Masaan was bold enough to come in the week following the Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Masaan, despite being awarded at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, fails to make a mark at the box office as its very limited opening weekend footfalls show.

After a weekend of over Rs 100 crore, Bajrangi Bhaijaan continued to cash in on post Eid revelries. The almost universal positive word of mouth also helped the film continue its record-breaking spree throughout its first week outperforming all top grossers of recent times. The film ended its first week with Rs 184.85 crore and went on to cross the Rs 200 crore mark on day nine.

The film has an open week and will continue its march into the second week where it is expected to create more records, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi- Dubbed) maintains a strong trend in its second week despite strong opposition in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. At the same time, the film also benefitted from Eid celebrations as the Muslim audience throng the cinemas after a month of restraint due to Ramzan. The film collected Rs 24.7 crore in its second week to take its two-week total to Rs 66.25 crore.

Having crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, which matter much to such controlled budget films, ABCD 2 comes to the end of its run adding Rs 10 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week total to Rs 105.05 crore.

Box office: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 100 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: A Salman Khan film and the festival of Eid make a sort of grand combination at the box office. And Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the latest Khan starrer, continues the tradition.

However, what is different this time is that this is no usual superhuman action film, which are dished out by Khan’s filmmakers for some years now.

The film has just two brief action scenes, tackles a risky subject releasing it at a time when the film could have easily disappointed his fans who usually love to watch him go berserk with his muscles and fists.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan counts on emotional appeal, balances two faiths tactfully and emotions of two countries, India and Pakistan.

The film, despite its release a day before Eid, matched the collections of other Khan hits to record opening day figures of Rs 27.2 crore and, as expected, took a big leap on Saturday (Eid day) and Sunday Rs 38.5 to end its opening weekend with a whopping Rs 102.2 crore.

Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi-Dubbed) maintained very well through its first weekend. After an opening weekend of Rs 20.15 crore, it more than matched up to its weekend figures with first week collections of Rs 41.55 crore. The film had fewer screens in its second week due to the extensive release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

I Love NY opened to poor collections and stayed that way through its first week run.

Guddu Rangeela added a meagre Rs 65 lakh in second week to take its two week total to Rs 8.4 crore.

Second Hand Husband collected Rs 35 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 2.95 crore.

ABCD 2 added another Rs 1.70 crore in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 104.95 crore.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is still holding fort at the box office. The movie collected Rs 40 lakh in its eighth week taking its eight week total to Rs 142.95 crore.

‘ABCD 2’ continues to rise at the BO

MUMBAI: Guddu Rangeela, coming from the same director of Jolly LLB, Subhash Kapoor, which was much appreciated and did well at the box office, proves to be a dud. Rather than a solid script, the film looked more like an attempt to cash in on the goodwill of the past film using Arshad Warsi again as a talisman.

Warsi may be a good performer but what use is a performer without a well-defined role or a script that holds? The film remained in the Rs one crore plus range through its first weekend to collect Rs 5.1 crore in its first three days.

Second Hand Husband, counting totally on Dharmendra to impact its box office, fails badly. With rest of the cast being inconsequential and the film having nothing in the name of a cogent story or script, the film just does not work. The movie hardly makes an impact at the box office remaining far short of a crore mark on any of its weekend days. The movie has collected Rs 1.85 crore for its opening three days.

BezubanIshq struggles through a legal hurdle and change of distributor before it finally sees the arc light. The film, budgeted at Rs 5 crore initially, finally reaches the cinemas at a cost of Rs 18 crore to face a disastrous fate.

Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho fares poorly. Catering to no particular set of audience, the film manages to collect a poor Rs 1.4 crore in its first week.

ABCD 2 holds strongly in its second week backed by youth audience and finding favour with the elite multiplex crowd. The film has added a healthy Rs 24.9 crore taking its two week total to Rs 96.05 crore.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani drops to a meager Rs 1.35 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 32.3 crore.

Dil Dhadakne Do adds Rs 1.45 crore in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 75.1 crore.

Tanu Weds Manu continues to regale the audience in its sixth week. The film collects Rs 1.8 crore to take its six week total to Rs 151.42 crore.

Box office: ‘ABCD 2’ collects Rs 71.15 crore

MUMBAI: The only release of the week, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho finds no takers. A product of weird imagination, it sinks taking its crudity along.

ABCD 2 sustains well through its first week catering to youth at elite multiplexes to collect Rs 71.15 crore. The film is enjoying open run sans opposition and should maintain steady run in its second week.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani does okay in its second week by collecting Rs 4.45 crore to take its two week tally to Rs 30.95 crore.

Dil Dhadakne Do added Rs 3.75 crore in its third week, taking its three week total to Rs 73.65 crore.

Tanu Weds Manu weathers rains, heat and oppositions. The film has collected Rs 3.25 crore in its fifth week to take its five week tally to Rs 149.63 crore.

Piku has added about Rs 10 lakh in its seventh week taking its seven week tally to Rs 80.02 crore.

Sardarji, a Punjabi film released in Punjab, Delhi, Mumbai and a few other centres has proved to be another trailblazer from its superstar hero, Diljeet Dosanjh. The film has collected over Rs 8.5 crore in its opening weekend from India alone while also going strong in the overseas markets.

  • Box Office: ‘ABCD 2’ collects Rs 45.5 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘ABCD 2’ collects Rs 45.5 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Youth and the growing fan following for young stars, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, earned a positive welcome to ABCD 2 with a Rs 14.4 crore opening day. The film maintained similar figures on Saturday, not improving but also not dropping. With figures being the best at over Rs 17 crore, the film ended its opening weekend with Rs 45.5 crore. The film will have to sustain well through the week to justify its high cost. It has the advantage of three small films as oppositions next week.

Hamari Adhuri Kahaani pays for being a depressing film with a poor script. Not designed to be an entertainer, the film does not even tug at one’s emotions. Having opened to a weak response, it stays that way to collect Rs 26.65 crore in its first week. The film dropped drastically in its second weekend.

Dil Dhadakne Do has made the most of poor opposition and has managed to have some hold at the box office to collect Rs 15.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 69.9 crore.

On the other hand, Tanu Weds Manu Returns maintains a strong trend holding its own with collection figures of Rs 8.25 crore in its fourth week to take its three week tally to Rs 146.38 crore.

Piku collected Rs 15 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week total to Rs 79.92 crore, whereas Gabbar Is Back collected Rs 17 lakh in seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 80.22 crore.

Shraddha Kapoor receives vintage Piaget gold watch from dad Shakti Kapoor for birthday

MUMBAI: Actress Shraddha Kapoor gets a solitaire to cherish for life from her beloved father Shakti Kapoor on her 26th birthday. She was gifted a vintage Piaget gold watch worth Rs 7 lakhs from Shakti Kapoor’s personal collection, which is close to his heart. They say a mother’s belonging is passed on to her daughter as a tradition but here the actress has been blessed with a possession from her dad’s treasure.

“I have a huge collection of watches and this one was a particular favourite of hers (Shraddha)”, says Kapoor about the gold watch.

Adding to how precious this gift is to his daughter, Bollywood’s iconic actor says, “She used to eye this watch when she was a kid so this time I thought, it’s her birthday so why not surprise my princess. So I decided to gift her watch not only because I love her but because I’m really very proud of her.”

To celebrate Shraddha’s birthday dad Shakti Kapoor cancelled his flight to Delhi, “I cancelled my flight and was with her all afternoon since she has a shoot in the night these days for her upcoming film ABCD 2, we couldn’t do the midnight celebrations but we organized a family lunch with all of her favourite dishes. “

Shakti lists his daughter’s birthday lunch menu, “Shraddha is a big seafood lover. So there was prawn curry, crab cakes, fish curry and prawn biryani. And actually we had it all. I was eating for almost one-and-a-half hours until Shraddha stopped me by saying, ‘Papa that’s enough.’”
