Golden Kela nominates the most popular for the worst performance

MUMBAI: They are the heartthrobs of Bollywood and their movies were the highest grosser of 2013. But still, they couldn’t impress their critics much. We are talking about Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, whose movies Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 earned in crores at the Box Office but have been nominated in the sixth edition of the Golden Kela Awards – the Indian version of the Raspberry Awards – that celebrates the worst of Bollywood.

Golden Kela Awards founder Jatin Varma thinks that the movies that released this year gave the jury ample choice for the nominations. “It might be tough for the voters to decide which one was the absolute worst! This time the nominations were especially difficult, because Bollywood spewed out an incredible amount of crappy films and the Indian audience spent a large amount of money on them,” he remarked.

To add spice to the show, a few new categories have been introduced that include special awards like Aakhir Kyun Award, Dara Singh Award for Worst Accent, Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya, Aap Yahaan Aaye Kisliye Award and Ra.One Award for Worst Premise. These awards will only be announced at the official awards ceremony that will take place on 29 March, 2014 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

  • The year of big movie acquisitions

The year of big movie acquisitions

    By Neeraj Vyas

If we were to reflect on the landmark moments of 2013, we could proudly say that it has been an impactful year with many highs. To start off, Indian Cinema celebrated 100 years of diverse and distinctive movies. It is a momentous occasion for the world’s largest producer of feature films with over 1200 releases a year in more than 25 languages. The casts got bigger, the designing of the film got more glamorous, the locations more exotic and the technical values are at par with anywhere else in the world.

On the flip side, most of this additional cost was passed on the broadcaster and acquisitions became hugely expensive. Surprisingly, these high costs have not deterred many broadcasters from acquiring big banner films at pre-production stage even though it is almost impossible to gauge how well the film will be received by television audiences. In future, movie deals will probably be governed by the revenue generated at the box office.

On the digital front too, the channel focused on building its brand equity and connect, apart from trying to keep strengthening the positioning of the brand. With competition within channels heating up to garner maximum viewership, the stakes attached to such upmarket films has evolved to be much more complicated than it has been in previous years. Marketing budgets for the television premiers of these films is something which has seen a huge increase with each channel upping the level of spends and trying to be distinctively innovative with each premier. For Aashiqui 2, the biggest romantic musical of the year, at MAX, we raised the bar for marketing innovations across all mediums of communication. The channel engaged with its viewers across all platforms – print, online and outdoors raising to a crescendo with the stars of the movie engaging with some lucky viewers thereby creating a much required stickiness for the brand. The main aim was to attract fresh viewers and entice older ones to watch the film again.

The digital space is constantly evolving and our endeavour is to customise everything we do on the digital platform. Some of the innovations on the social platform were the IPL Jhumping Jhapak app. Also, MAX was the first Hindi movie channel to integrate live tweets on Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

From an overall industry perspective, I feel the highpoint was the rollout of digitisation across the country in phases. Although much delayed and slower than anticipated, it opened out a whole new opportunity for channels to increase shelf space. The proposed ad cap pushed many networks to launch new channels to adequately maximise their inventory supply. At MAX, our focus was to consciously deliver better films and energise the brand to engage with our loyal viewers.

Looking forward, the film channels will also need to re-evaluate the way advertising is sold so that the true value is gained in return for the delivery of this product to large chunks of audiences.

‘Yaariyan’s’ ‘Baarish’ gets over a million hits

MUMBAI: When Bhushan Kumar, son of T-series founder, late Gulshan Kumar, entered in the business, nobody was sure if he would be able to create the same musical magic that his father created. But it seems he is rising above his father’s shadow. After creating ripples with the melodious music of Aashiqui 2 earlier in the year, now even T-series’ second venture Yaariyaan seems to be getting a lot of attention, especially from the youngsters.

One of the songs, Baarish from the film that was launched earlier this week already seems to be popular among the masses. Reports suggest that the song that features lead actors Himansh Kohli and Rakul Preet, has already got 1,138,752 hits in just four days. Despite a fresh cast, such an overwhelming response is really surprising.

The film is being directed by Divya Khosla Kumar and is based on the life of college-going youngsters. It is scheduled to release on 10 January 2014.

  • Shraddha Kapoor to star opposite Akshay in Gabbar

Shraddha Kapoor to star opposite Akshay in Gabbar

The Aashiqui 2 fame Shraddha Kapoor is indeed going places. After witnessing a massive turnaround in her career post the film, she has now been signed opposite Akshay Kumar for Gabbar. The development is close on the heels of her giving a nod of approval to Shahid Kapoor’s Haider.

Producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali was quite positive about Shraddha making the cut since he felt the pretty girl carried just the right kind of innocence that the character demanded.

This will be Shraddha first movie in the big league opposite a superstar like Akshay. Incidentally each of her next three films, The Villain, Haider and now Gabbar, has the leading man in the title, playing the central protagonist.

Not too long ago a certain Sonakshi Sinha also started on the similar lines with Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore and Son of Sardaar; so Shraddha seems to be having a gameplan.
