3 Idiots success makes Bollywood eye China as potential market

MUMBAI: After the successful run of the Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots in China, Bollywood has started eyeing the country as a potential market.

Talking on the subject Vidhu Vinod Chopra quipped, “The Chinese audience identified with the societal and parental pressures on today’s generation of young students seeking success. This has demonstrated that universal themes will cross cultural and linguistic boundaries.”

Chopra also divulged that he was already receiving enquiries from China for his next film, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, slated for release at the end of April.

He hoped the success of 3 Idiots would see more Hindi-language films released in China, where only a handful of foreign films hit the silver screen every year.

Before 3 Idiots, the 2010 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan was shown in China.

Indian films were popular in China in the 1940s and 1950s but later ties between the two countries turned sour.

MUMBAI: Since its release in China two weeks ago, the Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi-starrer 3 Idiots has become a hit in China. The Vidhu Vinod Chopra-directed film was released in China with 900 prints.

Confirming the same, Vinod Chopra Films (VCF) CEO Sameer Rao said, “Mainland China is the second biggest film market after the US. But it is very difficult to enter because only 20 foreign films can be screened in China in a year. After its success in just two weeks, the VVCF camp has built high hopes that the movie will have a very long run in the Chinese market.”

“The message in the film has been the pull factor in the film. Such a great response from a non-traditional territory like China is a welcome phenomenon for the Hindi film market,” added Reliance Media Works CEO Anil Arjun.

3 Idiots released in China two years after its 2009 worldwide release.

    Third Munnabhai film in offing

  • India loses its most charismatic actor Dev Anand

India loses its most charismatic actor Dev Anand

MUMBAI: With the passing away of India‘s evergreen star Dev Anand, who never showed signs of aging even at the age of 88, the country has lost it most revered actor.

With his death coming within a short span when we lost personalities like Shammi Kapoor, Bhupen Hazarika, Jagjit Singh, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and MF Husain, the country has been left with a void very difficult to fill.

True to his wish that his last rites should not be performed in India Dev Anand breathed his last at the Washington Mayfair Hotel in central London. Ironically his family has decided to keep up to his wish that his final rites be conducted quietly, away from the media glare in a distant land. His mortal remains are to be cremated in London any day after Tuesday once his wife Kalpana Kartik and daughter Devina arrive in the British capital.

In his lifetime, Dev Anand, through his banner Navketan Films made many films like Afsar, Baazi, Aandhiyan, Humsafar, Taxi Driver, House No.44, Funtoosh, Nau Do Gyarah, Kala Bazar, Hum Dono, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Guide, Jewel Thief, Jaaneman, Lootmaar, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Ghungroo Ki Awaz, Awwal Number, Sau Crore, Mr Prime Minister and Chargesheet.

Among them, two films: Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Guide are said to be trendsetters. After its release, Hare Rama Hare Krishna assumed a cult status as it dealt with the disbanding of the Hippie culture. It aimed to have an anti-drug message and also depicted some problems associated with westernization such as divorce.

But the film that swung the fortunes of Anand‘s production house was the Vijay Anand-directed The Guide. The Guide went through many twists and turns before and during the period it was being made because the original written by RK Narayan was totally at odds with the Indian ethos and alien to the local mindset.

The film, the script of which was re-written by Vijay Anand, broke all the rules of Hindi cinema and shattered many taboos about what could and could not be shown on the big screen. This was only because of the sheer determination of both the Anand brothers who wanted to make a film that would be a landmark in all aspects.

Anand always stood up for the youth, he having given breaks to artistes like Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim, Jackie Shroff and Tabu who have made a name for themselves after that. Aamir Khan also did a film with him Awwal Number.

His enthusiasm and undying positivity won him innumerable fans the world over. In fact, this writer was initially bowled over with his warmth when five scribes from Mumbai including me accompanied him for the premiere of Mr Prime Minister in Ahmedabad a few years ago.

Right from the time we landed in Ahmedabad, to us arriving at the Drive Inn theatre, where the premiere was held, Dev Saab was very affectionate and saw to it that we enjoyed our stay with him in a local hotel.

And when he bade us goodbye, as he had to take an early flight to Mumbai for a special screening of his film at a suburban theatre, the actor producer asked his son Suniel to see that we were taken good care of till we left the city.

After that, I became quite pally with him and attended most of his press conferences. He even introduced me to Jagan Mohan of Hyderabad-based Goldstone Media, which was behind the colorization of Hum Dono.

Today,I cannot even think that he has left us for ever for just the thought of his absence, makes my heart cry.

The man who sang Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya bade us goodbye singing Saathi Na Koi Manzil, Chala Mujhe Leke Ai Dil, Akela Kahan,,,,.

Danis Tanovic to approach Aamir Khan for Tigers

MUMBAI: Danis Tanovic, whose No Man‘s Land was pitted against Aamir Khan‘s Lagaan and Audrey Tautou‘s Amélie in the nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category in 2002, is to approach Aamir Khan for a role in his forthcoming film Tigers.

“If everything goes well, we plan to propose a small role to Aamir in Tigers. Let‘s see if it works out,” said producer Cédomir in a statement. He is currently in Goa attending the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

The story of Tigers revolves around a successful baby food company‘s product that is mixed with spurious ingredients, the large-scale consumption of which ultimately results in problems like diarrhea and dehydration and eventually, a few deaths. “It‘s a very real problem today,” added Cédomir.

Tanovic and Cédomir are looking to film Tigers in India. “It is set in the Pakistani part of Punjab, but since it‘s not easy to shoot there, we will finish it in the Indian side of the state,” revealed Cédomir.

Release of Ek Tha Tiger deferred, makes way for Dhuan

UTV to produce Delhi Belly writer’s directorial venture

MUMBAI: Going by the way Aamir Khan‘s latest film Delhi Belly got an all-round appreciation, UTV Motion Pictures has jumped into the ring to produce writer Akshat Verma’s first, yet untitled, directorial venture.

The film will be a comic thriller and is being scripted by Verma himself.

Speaking on UTV‘s associating with Akshat, UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur said, “As a studio, we have always believed in backing upcoming talent who have the potential to bring entertaining cinema to audiences. The fantastic script written by Akshat was undoubtedly one of the key reasons behind the success of Delhi Belly and judging by his concept and vision, we believe he‘ll write and direct a superb film”.

“Working with UTV on Delhi Belly was a fantastic experience for me. To have a major studio get behind your film completely enables you to do your best work – I‘m inspired and excited to be working with UTV again on my next film,”observed Verma.

UTV has lined up a slate of films to be released in the rest of the year. These include films like My Friend Pinto, Barfii, Rowdy Rathore, Ghanchakkar, Joker and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.

Railways pose new hurdle to Mausam

MUMBAI: Looks like the path to the release of Pankaj Kapoor’s Mausam has been laid by hurdles.

After crossing the Censor Board hurdle and the IAF one, the film has now been hit by another obstacle. The Railway ministry has objected to a scene where Shahid Kapoor is shown in a car speeding across a level crossing in front of an approaching train.

Stunts in and around trains is a common phenomena in our films these days. Aamir Khan did it in Ghulam, Rajinikanth in Robot and recently Salman Khan in Bodyguard.

The makers of the film are yet to respond to the new issue.

  • Karan Johar’s Agneepath to release on 26 January

Karan Johar’s Agneepath to release on 26 January

Mumbai : Karan Johar has decided to release his ambitious film Agneepath on 26 January. The producer took the decision going by reports that Reema Kagti’s Aamir Khan yet-to-be titled film will not release as originally planned on Repubic Day.

Both Kagti‘s film and Venus‘ multi-starrer Tezz were scheduled to release on 26 January 2012, but Kagti felt that post-production could take some time and, hence, postponed the release of the film to a later date.

With one slot open on the Republic Day weekend, Johar thought it best to release his film on Republic Day. This because the producer thought that he would be able to take advantage of the long weekend, with the film releasing on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the makers of Priyadarshan-directed film Tezz have confirmed that they are in no mood to change the release date of the film. Also to release on the same day is Dibakar Banerjee‘s Shanghai that stars Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi.
