Censor Board clears Talaash with a U/A certificate

MUMBAI: The Censor Board has cleared Aamir Khan‘s upcoming release Talaash with a U/A certificate.

Film trade circles were apprehensive of the kind of certificate the Censors would dish out given the fact that the film is a suspense drama with serial killings at its core. Some even feared that the film may be deemed unfit for kids and teenagers and hence would be given an ‘A‘ certificate.

"However, Censor Board feels that there isn‘t anything overtly violent or disturbing about the film and hence have given it a U/A. "The film had also been passed without any cuts. That‘s a good win too", said a source.

This has been heartening for the film‘s producers Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani who wouldn‘t have to worry about curtailed footfalls for the film. Moreover, director Reema Kagti too is happy with the liberal stance of the Censor Board.

The film‘s running length is 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Filmmakers resent CBFC decision to stop re-certifying adult films for TV

MUMBAI: In a move that threatens to derail several top-of-the-line production houses which make a chunk of their profits from the advance sale of satellite rights, the Central Board of Film Certification has decided to stop re-certifying A-rated films for television.

According to sources, the decision has been taken in accordance with the provisions of the 1952 Cinematograph Act.

The move is likely to severely affect advance sale of satellite rights on part of the producers or production houses.

A number of big-ticket films, including Aamir Khan‘s home production Delhi Belly, Anurag Kashyap‘s Gangs of Wasseypur (parts 1 and 2) and Vikram Bhatt‘s Hate Story, are waiting for CBFC clearance. The satellite rights of many of these films have already been sold to broadcasters amounting to multiple crores.

For the last several years, the CBFC has been modifying A-rated films, both from India and abroad, through a ‘Form of Conversion‘ that was introduced at the board-level to facilitate the TV telecast of certain movies.

All this began last month when objections were raised with the manner in which The Dirty Picture had been modified for TV. The CBFC then told the film producers that they should specify to TV channels that all modified ‘A’ rated films should only be shown only after 11 pm.

Though this suggestion was accepted for The Dirty Picture, Vishesh Film, the producer of Jannat 2, challenged the The Dirty Picture‘s guideline in the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) fearing a loss of revenue in satellite rights.

The Dirty Picture aired on 26 August on Sony Entertainment Television.

The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal, while ruling in favour of the production house‘s favour, had told CBFC that it could not decide the slotting of films on TV. It was then that matters came to a head.

Airing his discontentment, filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt groused, "This is a very serious matter. Now, there is no other way but to lock horns with the government. We might require judicial intervention failing which the entire economics of the film industry will go haywire."

Recent films with an ‘A’ certificate include films like Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster, Shor in the City, Shaitan, Ishqiya, Desi Boys, Love Sex Dhoka, Jism 2, Murder 2, and Ragini MMS.

Release of Talaash delayed to 7 December

MUMBAI: The release of Reema Kagti’s Aamir Khan-starrer Talaash has been delayed for the umpteenth time and will now release on 7 December.

The film was initially scheduled to release on 26 January this year. Then came reports that since Khan was a little apprehensive about the climax of the film being strikingly similar to that of the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani, he wanted a change in the climax. The film got delayed automatically and was rescheduled for release on 1 June.

But, there was no headway even though the film’s trailers were splashed all over. Then the producers declared that the film would open on 30 November as it was said that Khan was busy with his Satyamave Jayate.

But now it is heard that that the film might come one week later on 7 December, though there is no specific reason given for the delay.

The project is jointly produced by Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions.

Assamese film on female foeticide to release on 13 July

MUMBAI: Assamese film Me and My Sister, based on the issue of female foeticide, is scheduled for release in seven languages on 13 July.

The Rajesh Bhiyan directed film throws light on cases of exploitation of women and ill-treatment prevalent in the state of Assam.

Initially, the film was made in Assamese for the people of Assam. But the recent storm created by Aamir Khan‘s show Satyamev Jayate on female foeticide forced producer Nepon Dhoula to dub the film in languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani and English.

Said Dhoula, “The film deals with the fate of girl child. Currently, under the Indira Gandhi child Welfare scheme, Government of India presents an amount of Rs 25,000 on the birth of first girl child to the families and Rs 20,000 on the birth of second which we feel is not enough and should be increased.”

The film, shot in cinemascope, has been produce under banner NBDK Production.

Sunil Bohra wants ‘A’ certificate for Trishna

MUMBAI: Producer Sunil Bohra has asked for an ‘A‘ certificate from the Censors for his forthcoming Frieda Pinto-starrer Trishna.

“The Censor Board will be viewing the film this week and we are applying for an ‘A‘ certificate like Aamir Khan did for Delhi Belly,” observed Bohra.

The film, an adaptation of Thomas Hardy‘s novel ‘Tess of the d‘urbervilles‘, tells the story of a woman whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. Set in contemporary Rajasthan, Trishna (Freida Pinto) meets a wealthy young British businessman Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed) who has come to India to work in his father‘s hotel business.

After an accident destroys her father‘s Jeep, Trishna goes to work for Jay, and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Trishna‘s tragedy is that she is torn between the traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her.

The film starts off as a tale of romance, but fast turns into a lustful affair in which Riz‘s character exploits Trishna in the name of love. It is said that the film‘s sequences have references to the Kamasutra.

Shot in Hindi and English, Trishna is slated to release on 650 screens across the country. The film has cameos by Anurag Kashyap, Kalki Koechlin and singer-composer Amit Trivedi. It will release all across on 6 July.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Bohra has planned the premiere of his film in Jodhpur, his hometown. Around 500 assorted guests from Bollywood and the British film industry are likely to attend the premiere.

  • Aamir Khan’s debut TV show Satyamev Jayate opens with 4.1 TVR

Aamir Khan’s debut TV show Satyamev Jayate opens with 4.1 TVR

MUMBAI: Star India‘s biggest programming property of the year and Aamir Khan‘s debut TV show Satyamev Jayate has made an impact, energising the Sunday morning slot.

The one-and-a-half-hour first episode on female foeticide, telecast at 11 am, opened with an aggregate rating of 4.09 across the country for viewers above four years and reached out to 27 million viewers.

The TAM data is for the entire Indian market, including cable and terrestrial homes where Doordarshan beams. Satyamev Jayate airs on seven Star network channels, ETV Telugu and pubcaster Doordarshan.

The show recorded a rating of 4 in the Hindi speaking market of C&S homes, according to TAM.

Says Star India executive vice president marketing and communications Gayatri Yadav, “The 11 am slot was not at all active. We are happy that our strategy has worked and the time spent by audiences has been quite good. It seems to have worked both in the upper SEC audiences and terrestrial homes. Beyond anything, it‘s the buzz of the show that has been historic; it‘s connecting well with the viewers.”

But isn‘t Star disappointed with the show‘s rating of 3 on its flagship channel Star Plus? Yadav feels that the show should be seen in its totality and not in isolation.

“We are happy with the ratings on Star Plus. We also need to get used to this concept of simulcast as networks have game changing show properties. We will put such properties across our network channels. We must expand our lexicon and see it as an aggregate. The aggregate viewership has been very encouraging,” says Yadav.

    How advertisers view the ratings

Advertisers, who have bet big monies on the show across the channels, tend to agree. Says GroupM CEO Vikram Sakhuja, “The debut

ratings have been very good and must be viewed in totality. The reach of the show is also fantastic.”

The biggest benefit is that the Aamir Khan show circulated on other platforms beyond television. Satyamev Jayate, in fact, was the most searched term in Google in India on 6 May, the day of its launch. The show trended 1-9 on the top Twitter Trends.

Says associate sponsor Axis Bank CMO Manisha Lath Gupta, “The ratings support our strategy. We have integrated with the show and have got a lot of traffic from people who aren‘t necessarily our consumers. We have a presence towards the end of the show when we say that ‘to make contribution you can reach out to Axis Bank‘. We have got a lot of value by associating with the show.”

Lodestar UM CEO Shashi Sinha believes the initial response has been positive, particularly among the upscale

audiences. “The rating that the show has got is very good. What is more interesting is to see how it is doing in SEC A. Four is a good opening for a Sunday morning slot.”

Satyamev Jayate has also got a very high interactive value. “If you look at social media, the show has generated a lot of interactivity and buzz. The most difficult audience to get today is SEC A, but the show has managed to tap them,” says Sinha.

Not everybody, though, is convinced. Lintas Initiative Media CEO Sudha Natrajan is disappointed with the ratings that Star Plus has got, though she thinks it was a bold step to start something like this on Sunday mornings. “It is their way of recapturing the Sunday morning time band. It will take a bit longer for the viewership to build up on Star Plus during this time zone. The show is very tightly produced and there are topics of high interest,” she says.

As per Tam data provided by the channel, the show opened with roughly 50 per cent higher ratings in Upper SEC audiences (SEC A 5.9 TVR All 4+). In C&S homes, the show garnered 14.4 TVR in the 15-34 age group, (Digital homes, HSM Million+).

Terrestrial viewers have got hooked on to the show. Doordarshan has posted ratings of 11 (Non C&S Households).

“One should not only see the show from the pure TVR point of view. One has to also notice the amount of buzz that is being created

in the market . The show has done very well on that front. It is more valuable for the brands that it is being talked about so much,” concludes Starcom MediaVest Group chairman and LiquidThread (Asia-Pacific) MD CVL Srinivas.

    How the Hindi GECs rank

The pecking order of the Hindi general entertainment channels remains the same. Star Plus leads, adding 14 GRPs in the week ended 12 May, according to TAM data (C&S 4+ HSM).

The channel‘s fiction property Diya Aur Baati Hum leads with 4.92 TVR. Diya Aur Baati Hum has edged past Zee TV‘s homegrown dancing reality show DID lil Masters, pushing it to No. 2 on the ‘top 10 shows‘ list.

Despite losing 15 GRPs, Zee TV continues to hold its position as the second most watched Hindi GEC. The drop comes as DID lil Masters sees a dip in viewership in its third week. The show, which had garnered 6.2 and 5.8 TVR in the first two weeks respectively, could manage 4.82 TVR this week. Zee TV‘s fiction property Punarvivah has seen improved performance, securing a position in the top 10 most watched shows with a 3.42 TVR.

Meanwhile, Sony Entertainment Television (Set) has also lost three GRPs to end the week with 217 GRPs.

Colors has added six GRPs to cross the 200 mark. The channel closed the week with 201 GRPs. Its biggest fiction property, Balika Vadhu, saw a rise in viewership, clocking 4.48 TVR and ranking fourth.

Sab added 27 GRPs to close the week with 131 GRPs. The channel has seen ratings jump across weekend prime-time, weekday prime-time and weekday afternoon prime-time slots.

Life OK, the second GEC from Star, also added six GRPs to end the week with 91 points.

Sahara One remained at the bottom of the ladder with 40 GRPs.

UTV set to release Delhi Belly in Hong Kong on 10 May

MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures is set to release Aamir Khan‘s Delhi Belly on 10 May in Hong Kong.

A rip-roaring film, Delhi Belly will release across eight screens in cinemas for the first week with Cantonese subtitles.

After consecutive success of Hindi films in Hong Kong, there has been immense demand of content that has the ability to crossover and work with local audiences across culture and sensibilities.

The film is about Tashi, Arun and Nitin – flatmates, buddies and partners in crime. Tashi is to get married in a month but still doesn‘t know if his fiancé is the one. Arun can‘t make up his mind who he wants to kill first – his girlfriend who has just dumped him or his stupid, annoying boss whose idea of creativity is sketching a smiling banana.

On the other hand, Nitin is about to discover that eating delicious tandoori chicken off a street vendor is going to give him the worst case of Delhi Belly he‘s ever known! Three regular blokes, living the regular life except for one small detail – they are on the hit list of one of the world‘s deadliest crime syndicates. Will they be able to get away before the shit hits the roof and it comes crashing down? Delhi Belly is the meanest comedy you‘re ever likely to see.

Said UTV Motion Pictures Senior Vice President, International Distribution and Syndication Amrita Pandey, “It‘s a very proud moment for us to have our film Delhi Belly release in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has a large young local and expat population and Delhi Belly has done superb business in cities like London, Singapore, Dubai, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, we hope it resonates with audience in Hong Kong. After the phenomenal success of 3 Idiots in Hong Kong, there is huge fan following for Aamir, and correspondingly for Delhi Belly since it is produced by him.”

Directed by Abhinay Deo and written by Akshat Verma, Delhi Belly stars Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapur and Vir Das.

  • Star’s Aamir Khan debut TV show to ride on big money

Star’s Aamir Khan debut TV show to ride on big money

MUMBAI: Star Network has roped in two main and six associate sponsors for the Aamir Khan-hosted and produced show Satyamev Jayate that launches on 6 May.

Airtel is the presenting sponsor for the show while it is powered by Aquaguard. The associate sponsors are Coca-Cola, Berger Paints, Skoda, Johnson & Johnson, Dixcy Scott and Axis Bank. The company is looking forward to add two more associate sponsors but the deal is in the final stages of negotiation.

Confirming the same, Star India president-ad sales Kevin Vaz said, “We have got eight sponsors already. We are giving our sponsors 100 per cent exclusivity i.e we will not sell spots to any competitor brand on the show. We will be finalising on the remaining two associate sponsors by Friday.”

Associate sponsors have paid Rs 60-70 million while the title sponsors have invested Rs 160-200 million, according to market estimates.

“We are announcing two more associate sponsors soon,” Vaz said, while refusing to divulge any financials.

Satyamev Jayate will be a 13-episodic series with every episode spanning 90 minutes. Vaz said that after spots taken by the title and associate sponsors, every episode will be left with only 30 seconds of free commercial time which the channel plans to sell at a premium of Rs 1 million per 10 second.

“In today’s cluttered market, the kind of reach we are providing will make it a lucrative option for advertisers to be a part of the show,” Vaz said.

Eureka Forbes CEO direct sales and SVP- marketing Marzin R Shroff said, “This is Aamir Khan’s first TV production and it made sense for our Aquaguard brand to be associated with it. The show talks about how Indians can be proud of themselves in battling situations. It is a blind fit for us because even we promote happy, healthy, safe environment. Everything that we do is in line with the show.”

OMD India COO Harish Shriyan said, “The show is based on issues pertaining to almost all of us. I feel the show will provide us a good reach as it will be simulcast in at least seven languages. With this kind of show being backed by Aamir Khan it should be successful.”

The show is based on social issues and will be simulcast on Star Plus (Hindi), Star World (English), Star Jalsha (Bengali), Star Pravah (Marathi), Star Vijay (Tamil), Star Utsav (Hindi), Asianet (Malayalam) and Suvarna (Kannada). The channel will also provide the feed in Telugu but the network does not have a Telugu channel.
