  • TV Today numbers up

    BENGALURU: TV Today Network Limited (TVTN) reported greatly improved consolidated results for the year ended 31 March 2017 (FY-17, current year). The Arun Purie controlled company’s consolidated profit after tax (PAT) increased 60.7 percent to Rs 991.13 million (15.7 percent margin of Total Income) as compared to the Rs 616.66 million for the previous year. TVTN’s Total Income increased 4.7 percent to Rs 6,305.77 million in the current year from Rs 6,021.98 million in FY-16.

    The improvement in performance was due to the improvement in the company’s Television Broadcasting (TV) segment, which was offset by the poor performances of TVTN’s radio and Newspaper Publishing segments.

    The TV Today television network is an English-Hindi news television network. It consists of the several news channels that include Aaj Tak (Hindi), India Today Television (English), Tez (Hindi), Business Today (English) and Delhi Aaj Tak (Hindi). TVTN’s TV segment reported operating revenue growth 5.7 percent forFY-17 to Rs 5,637.53 million from Rs 5,330.29 million in the previous year. TV segment operating profit for the current fiscal increased 1 percent to Rs 1,577.26 million from Rs 1,561.04 million in the previous fiscal.

    TVTN has made attempts to dispose its radio segment – it which runs FM radio stations under the brand Oye FM. It has been partly successful in that endeavour to the extent that government regulators have permitted it to succeed. TVTN’s radio segment revenue was almost flat (increased 0.4 percent) to Rs 90.21million from Rs 89.88 million in the previous year. The segment had an higher operating loss for FY-17 at Rs 175.09 million as compared to Rs 136.06 million in FY-16.

    TVTN reported 10.1 percent decline in revenue of its Newspaper Publishing segment in fiscal 2017 at Rs 360.81 million as compared to Rs 401.43 million in the previous year. The segment’s operating loss in FY-17 increased to Rs 28.35 million as compared to Rs 16.07 million in the previous year.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by TV Today Network Limited

    Total expenses in FY-17 increased 6.3 percent to Rs 4,858.79 million (77.1 percent of Total Income) as compared to Rs 4,572.06 million (75.9 percent of Total Income) in FY-16. Production costs were almost flat (increased by 0.9 percent) in FY-17 at Rs 714.20 million (11.3 percent of Total Income) as compared to Rs 707.97 million (11.8 percent of Total Income).

    Employee Benefits Expense increased 2.2 percent to Rs 1,569.13 million (24.9 percent of Total Income) from Rs 1,534.92 million (25.5 percent of Total Income). Finance Costs increased 31.3 percent to Rs 84.10 million (1.3 percent of Total Income) in the current year from Rs 64.04 million (1.1 percent of Total Income) in FY-16. Other expenses in the current year increased 13.2 percent to Rs 2,170.92 million (34.4 percent of Total Income) from Rs 1,917.81 million (31.8 percent of Total Income)) in the previous year.

  • ABP slips in three categories, NDTV, Zee, India TV & India News climb a slot each

    MUMBAI: Times Now continued to dominate the English news genre though the players in the space witnessed an overall fall in viewership this week. NDTV 24×7 climbed a spot to the third position whereas CNN News 18 fell from the third to the fourth position, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. 

    CNBC TV18, with a slight fall in the ratings, has retained the leadership in English Business news.

    Aaj Tak retained its Hindi news dominance in the current week, leading in all three genres, witnessing a slight decline in the ratings. ABP news slipped in all the three genres by two slots.

    English News

    Times Now with a minor drop in ratings continued to dominate the genre with 645 Impressions (000s) sum this week against 767 Impressions(000s) sum last week followed by India Today with 368 Impressions (000s) sum. NDTV 24×7 climbed to third spot replacing CNN News18 with 290 Impressions (000s) sum. CNN News18 and BBC World News respectively took the fourth and fifth positions with 207 Impressions(000s) sum and 128 Impressions (000s) sum.

    English Business news

    CNBC TV18, also with a decline in ratings, retained the number one position with 535 Impressions (000s) sum as compared to 696 Impressions (000s) sum. ET Now with 372 Impressions (000s) sum sat pretty at the second spot this week. All others held the same slots as last week.

    Hindi News (U+R)

    Aaj Tak, with a decrease in ratings, retained its numero uno position with 99112 Impressions (000s) sum as compared to 104644 Impressions (000s) sum in week 18. India TV and Zee News climbed a spot each to the second and third position with 83481 Impressions (000s) sum and 81535 Impressions (000s) sum, respectively. 

    ABP News slipped by two slots to the fourth position with 72605 Impressions (000s) sum followed by News18 India with 65420 Impressions (000s) sum at fifth spot.

    Hindi News – Rural

    Aaj Tak, with a drop in its ratings, emerged as the number one channel in the rural market with 42999 Impressions (000s) sum as compared to 44287 Impressions (000s) sum last week followed by India TV with 35429 Impressions (000s) sum. 

    Zee News and India News climbed a spot each reaching the third and fourth positions with 32364 Impressions (000s) sum and 30602 Impressions (000s) sum, respectively. 

    ABP News dropped by two slots which brings it to fifth position with 30525 Impressions (000s) sum.

    Hindi News – Urban

    Aaj Tak, with a slight fall in its viewership, maintained its leadership position with 56113 Impressions (000s) sum in BARC week 18. 

    Zee News and India TV climbed a slot each to the second and third positions with 49170 Impressions (000s) sum and 48052 Impressions (000s) sum, respectively. ABP News dropped by two slots reaching the fourth position with 42080 Impressions (000s) sum followed by News18 India with 38017 Impressions (000s) sum.

    MUMBAI: Times Now continued to be the leader of English news genre with a hike in ratings whereas, in English business news genre, CNBC TV witnessed a downfall in ratings but maintained the top slot. In Hindi news (U+R), Aaj Tak witnessed a dip in ratings but continued to lead the genre across the market. CNBC Awaaz too, after a fall in ratings, continued to dominate the genre.

    English News channel

    Times Now continued to lead the genre with a slight hike in the ratings this week. The channel registered 595 Impressions (000s) followed by NDTV 24×7 on the second spot with 383 Impressions (000s) and India Today Television on the third spot with 304 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 with 258 Impressions (000s) stood at number four and BBC World News grabbed the fifth spot with 111 Impressions (000s).

    English Business channels

    Even after witnessing a dip in ratings this week, CNBC TV retained the number one position with 510 Impressions (000s) as compared to last week’s 630 Impressions (000s). ET Now too saw a downfall but managed to pocket the second position with 232 Impressions (000s) this week. NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 63 Impressions (000s). BTVi was on the fourth spot with 45 Impressions (000s) and CNBC TV18 Prime HD took the fifth place with 32 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News

    Aaj Tak, with decreased ratings, retained its numero uno position with 109866 Impressions (000s) in BARC week 15. ABP News was at the second position with 89800 Impressions (000s). At the third and fourth slots, respectively, India TV and Zee News interchanged their past week’s positions with 88759 Impressions (000s) and 82865 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 68385 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural

    Aaj Tak, with a fall in its ratings, emerged as the number one channel in the rural market with 50951 Impressions (000s) as compared to 57455 Impressions (000s) last week. ABP News was at the second place with 42510 Impressions (000s) and India TV grabbed the third position with 37382 Impressions (000s). India News and Zee News, respectively, took the fourth and fifth place with 33452 and 31853 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Urban

    Aaj Tak, with a decrease in its viewership, emerged as the leader in the urban market with 58914 Impressions (000s) as compared to 68054 Impressions (000s) last week. India TV bagged the second slot with 51430 Impressions (000s). Zee News took the third position with 51011 Impressions (000s) followed by ABP News at the fourth position with 47290 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 41217 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre as ratings fell from 1719 Impressions (000s) last week to 1692 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1190 Impressions (000s).

  • Drop in news viewership rating, Aaj Tak & Times Now retain respective leads

    MUMBAI: Times Now continued to dominate the genre though the players in the space witnessed a fall in their viewership this week. Players in the English Business News space, which was led by CNBC TV18, observed mixed ratings in BARC week 14.

    Although Aaj Tak was at the number one position, channels in both, Hindi News and Hindi News Rural space, saw a decline in ratings, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. Players in the Hindi News Urban genre observed mixed ratings this week.

    In the Hindi Business News space, the channels witnessed a substantial decline in ratings this week.  

    English News

    Times Now with decrease in ratings dominated the genre with 562 Impressions (000s) followed by India Today 356 Impressions (000s).  NDTV 24×7 grabbed the third place with 328 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 with 318 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 137 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position, respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV 18, with hike in ratings, retained the number one position 630 Impressions (000s) as compared to  547 Impressions (000s). ET Now with 352 Impressions (000s) came at the second spot this week. NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 76 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV18 Prime HD was on the fourth spot with 52 Impressions (000s) and BTVi took the fifth place with 29 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak, with decreased ratings, continued at its number one position with 125509 Impressions (000s) as compared to 129150 Impressions (000s) in week 13. ABP News was at the second position with 111995 Impressions (000s). At the third and fourth slots respectively, India TV and Zee News interchanged their past week positions with 94477 and 85727 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 70636 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Rural

    Aaj Tak, with a fall in its ratings, emerged as the number one channel in the rural market with 57455 Impressions (000s) as compared to 59143 Impressions (000s) last week. ABP News was at the second place with 52678 Impressions (000s) and India TV grabbed the third position with 38492 Impressions (000s). Zee News and India News respectively took the fourth and fifth place with 34507 and 33778 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News Urban

    Aaj Tak, with decrease in its viewership, emerged as the leader in the urban market with 68054 Impressions (000s) as compared to 70007 Impressions (000s) last week. ABP News was at the second position with 59316 Impressions (000s). India TV took the third position with 55985 Impressions (000s) followed by Zee News at the fourth position with 51220 Impressions (000s). News 18 India took the fifth position with 41498 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre as ratings fell from 2348 Impressions (000s) last week to 1719 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1261 Impressions (000s).

     

  • News genre ratings drop, Aaj Tak, Times Now & CNBC business lead

    MUMBAI: Channels in the Hindi News genre witnessed a decline in ratings this week. Led by Aaj Tak, players in the Hindi News Rural space observed mixed ratings with News24 dropping out from the Top 5 list making way for the entry of India News.

    In the Hindi News Urban genre, the channels saw a decrease in the viewership. News Nation entered the Top 5 list leading to the exit of News18 India. The Hindi Business News space also noted decline in ratings this week.

    According to week 12 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), led by Times Now, players in the English News genre saw a steep decrease in their viewership. In the English Business News space, players observed mixed ratings. The genre was dominated by CNBC TV18.

    Times Now saw a major decline in from 2282 Impressions (000s) last week as to 944 Impressions (000s) this week. India Today Television climbed up the row taking the second place with 476 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 was at the third slot with 409 Impressions (000s). NDTV 24×7 with 335 Impressions (000s) and News X with 112 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

    CNBC TV 18 emerged as the leader with 767 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 423 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime was at the third position with 92 Impressions (000s). NDTV 24×7 with 656 Impressions (000s) and News X with 148 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

  • Hindi & English News see boost in ratings

    MUMBAI: The Hindi News genre witnessed a substantial increase in ratings this week. Led by Aaj Tak, the players have seen a steep rise in their viewership. Even in the Hindi News Rural genre, the channel observed an increase in ratings except ABP. The genre continued to be dominated by Aaj Tak.

    According to week 10 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the Hindi News Urban space also saw increased ratings. The English News channels witnessed an increase in ratings, except for BBC World News. The genre was dominated by Times Now.

    In the English Business News space, players observed mixed ratings. Players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed mixed viewership this week.

    Times Now with an increase in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 777 Impressions (000s) this week as against 727 Impressions (000s) last week. India Today Television was at the second slot with 461 Impressions (000s) while NDTV 24×7 took the third position with 437 Impressions (000s). CNN News18 with 435 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 139 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV18 continued to dominate the genre with 736 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 412 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 93 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD was on the fourth spot with 20 Impressions (000s). BTVi took the fifth place with 17 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak with increased ratings continued at its number one position with 133173 Impressions (000s) as compared to 116367 Impressions (000s) in week 9. India TV was at the second position with 104587 Impressions (000s). News18 India took the fifth position with 38570 Impressions (000s).

    CNBC Awaaz continued to dominate the genre with decrease in ratings from 2052 Impressions (000s) last week to 1997 Impressions (000s) this week. The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 1456 Impressions (000s).

  • BARC: English & Hindi News genres show decline in ratings

    MUMBAI: Perhaps the approach of the end of the state elections had something to do with it, but English News channels witnessed a decrease in ratings except for CNN-News18. The genre was dominated by Times Now. In the English Business News space, players observed a substantial increase in its viewership except BTVi.

    Even as the Hindi news channels also saw a downslide, Aaj Tak continued to lead and the genre saw the entry of India News in the top 5 channels list while News Nation dropped out.

    According to week 9 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the exit of News Nation made way for the entry of News18 India in the Hindi News Urban genre. The players witnessed a decrease in the ratings. In the Hindi News Urban space, players witnessed mixed ratings.

    Players in the Hindi Business News space witnessed a substantial increase in their viewership this week.

    Times Now with a decrease in its ratings continued to dominate the genre with 727 Impressions (000s) this week as against 798 Impressions (000s) last week. CNN News18 came to the second slot with 435 Impressions (000s) while India Today Television took the third position with 346 Impressions (000s). NDTV 24×7 with 297 Impressions (000s) and BBC World News with 149 Impressions (000s) took the fourth and fifth position respectively.

    CNBC TV18 dominated the genre with 567 Impressions (000s) followed by ET Now with 356 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime were at the third position with 102 Impressions (000s). CNBC TV 18 Prime HD was on the fourth spot with 60 Impressions (000s). BTVi took the fifth place with 36 Impressions (000s).

  • dittoTV to stream Assembly election results live

    MUMBAI: The seventh phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh in 40 Assembly constituencies, with as many as 826 candidates contesting in this phase, ended on 8 March. This marks the end of the assembly elections in five states – Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, and viewers across the country will now be glued to their favorite news channels for the results which will be announced on 11 March.
