Multiple stakeholders come together to form ASCI Academy

Mumbai: The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) proudly unveils the ASCI Academy, a pioneering initiative poised to amplify the advertising industry’s capacity to create more responsible and progressive advertising campaigns. Building upon ASCI’s established corrective role which comes alive post ad publication, this  pioneering platform embeds self-regulation right at the point of the inception of  advertisements.

In today’s digital landscape, characterised by brief campaign durations and a surge in number of advertisers, the ASCI Academy is positioned to empower current and future industry professionals including influencers and students with a foundational understanding of advertising regulations, ensuring ethical practices from the outset.

The ASCI Academy’s core mission is to cultivate a cohort of advertising professionals dedicated to upholding responsibility in advertising, ultimately upholding consumer trust in brands.

The academy strategically consolidates ASCI’s extensive thought leadership and educational programs under one comprehensive umbrella. The academy’s spectrum of programs caters to diverse needs, spanning online, in-person, and hybrid formats. From e-learning modules to topical webinars, from deep-diving masterclasses on regulatory nuances to enhancing teaching skills through faculty development programs, the academy covers it all. Additionally, influencer certification programs ensure responsible endorsement practices, while consumer education initiatives foster informed choices.  Through sustained training and research efforts, the ASCI Academy remains steadfast in its commitment to engage stakeholders in the preventive aspects of self-regulation. Department of consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said, “I congratulate  ASCI on the launch of the ASCI Academy. In the digital age, preventive actions need strong impetus and encouragement, and the training of industry professionals – current and future is an important systemic intervention. The Department of Consumer Affairs is supportive of such efforts by the advertising self-regulator to foster a culture of responsibility in the advertising industry. We hope that the advertising industry engages  deeply with the Academy programs to make their teams better trained and educated on  the aspects of advertising regulations.”

We hope that the  resources and support by the Academy would be extremely useful for the online  advertisers and platforms.”

Addressing the opening of the academy, ASCI chairman NS Rajan said: “While ASCI has always had a strong corrective mechanism, we also wanted to harmonise the dynamic interplay between creativity and responsibility and address the broader consequences of advertising on society at large. The ASCI Academy is a big step in this direction which will  facilitate a preventive footprint and shape an advertising ecosystem to help the industry  to get it right.”

ASCI CEO and secretary general Manisha Kapoor added, “With short campaign durations, it is important that attention is directed at the point of creation of ads, not just after they are published. When the only ads to hit the market are responsible and compliant, it is a win-win for both consumers and industry. Over the next three years, ASCI Academy aims to train 100,000 current and emerging professionals through self-learning and on-campus workshops and sessions, besides programs for research and consumer education. • One-word description of Abby’s this year would be ‘game-changer’: The Ad Club’s Partha Sinha & Rana Barua

One-word description of Abby’s this year would be ‘game-changer’: The Ad Club’s Partha Sinha & Rana Barua

Mumbai: The stage is finally set for the annual awards hosted by The Advertising Club (TAC) to be held from 5 to 7 May at the GoaFest this year. The thirteenth edition of the Abby awards is back on ground after taking an enforced breather of two years, thanks to the pandemic. IndianTelevision.com caught up with The Ad Club president Partha Sinha and Abby Awards Governing Council 2022 chairman and The Ad Club VP Rana Barua to find out what has changed at the Abbys and on the participation from agencies and industry at large at this year’s awards.

The award ceremony that celebrates the cream of the country’s advertising works and the advertising industry at large is in its thirteenth year at the GoaFest. Earlier this year, The Ad Club announced its partnership with the prestigious The One Show for Abby’s 2022, and thereafter the appointment of three International jury chairs to judge the works.

    What’s different this time

“One of the key things that we wanted to do was to take Abby’s to global standards and we have done precisely that. We have tied up with the world’s most credible and sought-after award program, The One Show,” says Partha Sinha, diving right into what’s different this year about the awards.

This was unimaginable, says Sinha, reminiscing about the initial days of the awards. “Abby’s used to be a cottage industry- from there we have moved it to The One Show – that’s like the biggest global standard there is.” So, thanks to that a few things will be very different this year, he continues. “That is the standard of judging, the quality of jury we are getting due to the intervention of The One Show, and we also expect this to serve as a shortlist for global awards. Because here the remit maybe South Asia but the standard is global.”

“So South Asia entries will be judged in global light and my guess is that some of the works which will win here will go on to win on global platforms,” Sinha adds.

The work that is being judged is from the last three years, Barua reminds while talking about the awards’ association. “It’s truly now a part of an international circuit via this collaboration. So also, the quality of work is not going to be basic. I think that’s one of the biggest changes that is going to start- maybe some of it this year too but you will see it in the subsequent years- the work quality will automatically start improving.”

The quality of jury chairs that has come in because of The One Show, it’s going to become an introspective pressure on all of them because you have to raise the benchmark of work that’s coming out now, continues Barua. “That’s the exciting bit for us.”

    Kind of work being received

What is the kind of work being received in the wake of the pandemic, considering that the pandemic has served as a disruptor for most industries- advertising and marketing included? To that Barua says, “We need to remember that it is three years of work that we are judging this time. So there might be a pre-pandemic, pandemic, and also post-pandemic work from last year- which is when we came out of the pandemic and more or less life was returning to normalcy.”

“Also, because of the strictness of the process, neither Rana nor me- nor anybody in the committee, for that matter, has seen the work. The work is seen and evaluated only by the jury,” he emphasises, adding that, “We will get to see the work and the award only when it wins an award, and when the Abby is made. There’s a sanctity to the whole process and that is the beauty of The One Show. I’m loving it.”

Having said that, Sinha perceives that a key part of the works this time could be humane in nature “because one thing everybody has realised- whether its communication or business or anything- is that you need to have a lot of sympathy, a lot of empathy towards your audience.” Calling the pandemic the biggest teacher, he says, “The pandemic taught us that maybe ‘empathy’ is a bigger power than even ‘persuasion’ so we will get to see some reflection on that, rather than pure persuasion and selling.”

    Participation from agencies

Abby’s partnership with The One Show will add credibility and raise levels of transparency to the entire selection process for the awards, which had come in for a fair share of criticism from agencies in the past over transparency in the awarding process. It also saw a few big names in agencies dropping out of the process.

On the participation from agencies this time around after a gap of two years, Barua says, “I can just tell you the participation numbers this year have beaten both 2018 and 2019’s numbers. Both on Creative and on Media we have had some outstanding contributions from all the agencies- independent as well as network agencies.” It’s probably a record-breaking year, he adds, and so next year is going to get tougher for us as the stakes are going to be higher.

Barua acknowledges that because of the timing and uncertainty due to the Omicron wave, few network agencies could not manage to participate within time. “But they have all shown equal participation because of The One Show and from next year we are going to see a maximum number of these agencies coming back.”

Sinha draws attention to another event recently held by TAC- the EMVIES, which was likely the advertising industry’s first large-scale event post the pandemic. “We saw the energy, the number of entries, the quality of entries. And I am not expecting anything lesser- this will be as big, as exciting. The number of entries has surpassed all kinds of records so we think the participation is very strong. My guess is that even the quality of work would be great, as also seen during EMVIES. And I’m expecting the quality to only go upwards from here,” he says.

“And I’m also expecting that because of this global standard jury process, some of the work which wins here will also go on to win on some global platforms,” he further adds.

Earlier this year, post its partnership announcement with the prestigious The One Show for Abby’s 2022, the Ad Club announced the appointment of three International Jury Chairs for judging Abbys this year, namely – Menno Kluin, Aricio Fortes and Myra Nussbaum, who are each stalwarts in the global advertising industry and also some of the world’s most awarded.

Additionally, the Abbys Governing Council announced the names of six advertising professionals, who will be judging Abbys 2022 along with the international judges as jury chairs.

    Reaction from jury members

On the excitement from jury members, Barua says, “They were very excited to know about this entire association. For most of the global persons who have come onto the jury, India is a country that they would have loved to become a part of and play a role in this. And they are playing it either directly or indirectly through the network from some of the best agencies.”

If the time had permitted they would have got a wider range of people, says Barua. “Some of these names are absolutely the biggest in the industry. And there’s high excitement, they would love to know what’s happening in the country. Some of the best juries have managed to come onboard. We gave them the right categories to manage so that it’s easy for them to understand the entire thing.”

To give an insight into the kind of responses they were getting from the jury chairs, Sinha read out a text from a jury chairman (whose name is not disclosed for now). “TOS judging interface is a game-changer, it made the whole process on-the-go,” he reads out. “I found the composition of the jury very refreshing and I must appreciate the TAC for being so thorough even though it’s the first year of their collaboration.”

    Setting a benchmark

He further went on to say, “If there’s a one-word description of Abby’s this year, it would be ‘game-changer’. Everybody thinks it’s a game-changer. Everybody who judged thinks so too. We know it’s a game-changer. We want to make sure it is.”

Calling it a big change that the industry will always remember, Sinha says, “We spent serious money and effort doing this collaboration. And we did all of that with just one thought in mind,” He continues, “Because I think we owe it to our fellow communication people in the industry, that we do something which’s of a standard. And Abby is going to be of a standard which is going to be recognised by anybody across the globe.”

The TAC duo shared that the international collaboration has generated a lot of interest in the event amongst the global community, which was a little insulated before this. And that includes the kind of speakers the adfest is attracting. “We are getting Dan Wieden – that’s the man behind Nike’s famous ‘Just Do It’ slogan in 1988. Then there’s Menno Kluin – he’s the rockstar in the global creative world today. So suddenly the whole story is changing in a manner where people are now seeing us as a part of a circuit.”

They further add, “We have to get it to the level of those Monaco circuits, Singapore circuits. To be a part of that circuit it has to have that quality, status and stature. And that is precisely what we are doing. So our job as the ad club office bearers would be to make sure we take a very strong step towards preparing our entire circuit in such a way that it is world-class.”

“We have had enough bumps, hurdles, potholes so it’s time for us to even out the entire road and raise the game,” The Ad Club duo signs off.

  • GoaFest ’22 embarks on Green Path with digital displays of winning works: A Acharya & J Gandhi

GoaFest ’22 embarks on Green Path with digital displays of winning works: A Acharya & J Gandhi

Mumbai: The countdown has begun for the annual advertising festival to be held in Goa between 5-7 May. After a long pause of two years, the GoaFest, now in its 15th year, is back ‘break ke baad’ post-pandemic and the organisers promise it will well be worth the wait, with several firsts to the event this year. IndianTelevision.com caught up with the festival’s hosts and organisers, Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) president Anupriya Acharya and GoaFest 2022 chairman Jaideep Gandhi to find out what has changed on ground this year and all that there is to look forward to at the event that celebrates the country’s advertising, marketing, and media industries.

The event has received record participation from sponsors, brands, agencies and the industry at large in terms of record registrations, entries and sponsorships. “We have already signed up close to 18 sponsors onboard. There are record levels of award entries as well, both due to the tie-up with The One Show, as well as, the fact that the festival is coming after two years,” Acharya shares.

On how the advertising landscape has evolved in the last couple of years and the several innovations that have been incorporated into the fest, Acharya says, “So, post pandemic there have been a lot of changes in the advertising space, alongside the emergence of new innovations. We have tried to embrace a lot of that- be it in the way the event is being curated, or be it in the mix of speaker sessions that we are having.”

In a first, the festival will showcase a digital presentation of all the award work that is up for recognition, in a move towards a more greener initiative. In the past, the event used to have large print formats of the works on display. “This year we have departed from that format in the spirit of ‘Go Green’ and there will be a digital presentation (of the same).”

Speaking about the expectations from the fest this year, Acharya shares that with the return of normalcy it was important to celebrate everything that advertising stands for. “This festival is our flagship event and brings the whole industry together. One of the key things that’s coming out as the underlying theme for us this year is ‘togetherness’. Everybody is just looking to meet each other and celebrating together after such a long time. Be it the recognition of the work that has happened in the last two years, or the celebration of the human spirit over the challenges that we all have been through during this period, and even the very differentiated way of working through the pandemic. So, the focus is on just the ‘stay alive’ spirit and the ‘togetherness’, for starters.”

The fun video that was dropped online two weeks earlier as a launch pad for the festival has also helped create lots of ripples, she adds, smiling. The video showed the Adland honchos, including Madison World chairman Sam Balsara, Publicis Groupe South Asia CEO Anupriya Acharya, FCB Group India chairman and CEO Rohit Ohri, founder of Another Idea Jaideep Gandhi and Good Brands For A Healthy Life chairman Arvind Sharma, breaking into a jig to the tune of singer-rapper Badhshah’s “Jugnu” track to celebrate the event’s comeback.

About the stellar line-up of speakers and the other novelties in store at the festival this year, Jaideep Gandhi says, “On the speaker front, to make it more relevant and in keeping with the times, we have incorporated sessions with influencers this time. We are also having panel discussions on OTT.” Health & Wellness is also being plugged into the content of GoaFest’ 22, he added.

The three-day festival is expected to feature some well-known names from diverse fields of entertainment, sports, and politics such as SS Rajamouli, Anupam Kher, PV Sindhu, Mithali Raj, Tisca Chopra, Arvind Gupta, Kiran Bedi, and Jude Kelly among others as speakers.

In another first, the festival is also planning on doing a digital conclave for seminars, with meta set to play a big role in it, Gandhi discloses. The event will also have six to seven masterclasses happening parallelly.

This year the festival media coverage will be extended to podcasting, given that it’s another area which is developing very fast, the hosts added.

The event will also see the unveiling of the new AAAI logo- one of the few times that it has been changed in the 75 years of AAAI’s history. It is also possibly the first time the association has held a contest for choosing a new logo.

“We didn’t realise that it would generate so much excitement, we have got more than 150 entries at last count and we are spoilt for choice,” says Acharya. “We are very, very close to zeroing in on the final design for the logo.”

A two-level jury is shortlisting the designs, while another set of juries will sift it further before settling on the new logo design, which will finally be revealed at the festival.

The criteria to make the final cut, Acharya shares, will be the ‘uniqueness’, ‘timelessness’ and ‘memorability’ of the design, together with how it connotes to where the industry is headed. The latter is, in fact, the chief reason for doing this exercise, she divulges. ‘Adaptability’ and ‘versatility’ across different platforms and media, including the metaverse, are the other binding factors the agency is looking out for.

Arvind Sharma to be conferred with AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award 2021

Mumbai: The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) announced on Monday that AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award for 2021 will be conferred on advertising veteran Arvind Sharma. This is the highest honour to be given to an individual in India for his/her outstanding contribution to the advertising industry.

Arvind Sharma, an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, has had a long and successful career in the Indian advertising industry. What made him a true industry leader was the way he managed to make people achieve more than what they thought they were capable of, said the association in a statement.

As a young leader, he was tasked with making a local agency, Chaitra, transition into the Indian arm of Leo Burnett Worldwide. Over two eventful decades, he created an organisation that was both formidable and flexible. In doing this, he turned a safe and conservative agency into a creative power center. Soon, the agency’s work on Thums Up, Bajaj, Heinz, P&G, and many others saw it taking on the big guns in creative pitches as well as award shows, becoming one of India’s early winners at Cannes.

Sharma has also been responsible for several incredible talents that have blossomed under his watch.

Making the announcement, AAAI president Anupriya Acharya stated, “Arvind Sharma has been a true pioneer. Apart from singlehandedly making Leo Burnett a top agency and a force to reckon with he has also groomed some of the finest talents in our industry. But more than that he has made a tremendous contribution to our industry across both the art and science of advertising. He is truly deserving of this honour.”

AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award selection committee chairman Ashish Bhasin said, “Arvind is a deserving winner of this prestigious honor. Not only has he been a successful advertising professional, he has also contributed significantly to the industry in various capacities, including as President of AAAI and a key driver in launching Goafest. I am pleased to say that the entire committee was unanimous in conferring this award upon Arvind.”

The AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual who has been a practitioner of advertising for twenty-five years and had been in the top management position; has been or continues to be an active participant in industry bodies and or made significant contributions in shaping the industry priorities which enabled the advertising industry to grow, prosper and become more professionalised; individual known for his integrity, ethical practice and leadership qualities; contributed to his Company/Companies growth by innovative thinking and taking them in newer directions; involved in projects of social consequence which is seen as a role model for the industry at large and had been an industry veteran.

Some of the past winners of this award include Subhas Ghosal, Alyque Padamsee, Mike Khanna, R K Swamy, Piyush Pandey, Sam Balsara, Prem Mehta, Roda Mehta, Ram Sehgal, Madhukar Kamath, and others.

Formed in 1945, the AAAI is the national organisation of advertising agencies to promote their industry interests. The AAAI today comprises a very large number of small, medium, and large-sized agencies as its members, who together account for almost 80 per cent of the advertising business placed in the country.
