Essel’s Living Foodz plans HD channel; eyes APAC expansion

MUMBAI: It’s been three months since Subhash Chandra’s Essel Group launched its international food and lifestyle channel Living Foodz and plans are already afoot for expansion.

The channel is planning to launch its High Definition (HD) version in the coming year with separate programming. What’s more, with an emphasis on increasing the genre size and brand visibility in 2016, the channel is also planning to expand its footprint into the Asia Pacific region.

“The key player behind our success is the differentiated programming on our channel. The expansion will help us broaden our viewer base as well as increase subscription revenues. Expanding the client base here will be one of the key challenges in the coming months, but with Helios Media as our revenue partner, we are confident of setting new benchmarks in monetisation,” Living Foodz business head Amit Nair tells Indiantelevision.com.

Living Foodz has outsourced its ad sales to Helios Media, a specialty services company for broadcasters headquartered in Mumbai. “Helios understands the clients well and manages to give them effective solutions. They cover a bunch of clients, which has led to an increase in the revenues,” adds Nair.

The Living brand will manifest itself as a multi-platform brand business across various avenues like television, web, social platforms, mobile, etc.

On the content front, Living Foodz has ambitious plans in place for the food space in terms of reality and experiential cooking. The channel plans to launch big ticket properties every quarter and buzz creating shows in 2016. These key tentpole properties will drive viewership in a way that the audience finds the stories intriguing and entertaining. According to Nair, the audience needs Indian food stories with interesting anchors and chefs. “We are strategically targeting at the Indian subcontinent with an aim of supplying 100 per cent original home-grown content to our viewers,” he says.

Moving out of the confines of a conventional kitchen into a world of entertainment and adventure, the channel will be exploring the evolving social status of food in the food ecosystem.

While Nair strongly feels that technology is not a barrier in India, lifestyle products or feature entertainment are still in a nascent stage to make the shift into 4K. “The infrastructure and the content that is available in India are not sufficient enough for a 4K conversion,” he adds.

The food space has seen exponential growth and interest across the board from food technology to food discovery to the myriad food festivals that have become part of the calendar. “Today, audiences are willing to sample exotic culinary by travelling to that region. They are ready to push their boundaries to experiment. I think food as a lifestyle has arrived this year on. Celebrity chefs are now at the same level as a movie star or a sportsperson and it’s tremendously rewarding to see TV channels like Living Foodz playing such an important role in driving this zeitgeist,” adds a media planning and buying veteran on condition of anonymity.

On the advertising front, Living Foodz has a diverse number of clients ranging from FMCG, automobile segment, home electronics, e-commerce, broadcasters, office equipment and pure lifestyle products along with the regular food category clients that advertise on the channel.

“Living Foodz ticks all the right boxes when it comes to the quality of content, packaging and exciting set of anchors and chefs. It all nicely comes together in what we like to call food-tainment. Advertisers have always played an aggressive role behind the success of a channel and are always looking out for premium audiences in the right space,” says Nair.

Brands like Philips, Canon, Fitbit, Fortune, General Motors, HCL, Toyota and Go are already a part of the channel’s inventory. “The fact that food is lifestyle has now been established in the market with our meticulous positioning exercise. All the channels in the lifestyle segment have a substantial time devoted to food based content. Hence a lot of brands, which were earlier advertising in the lifestyle segment have started advertising with us,” adds Helios Media COO Bala Iyengar.

Come February 2016, Living Foodz is also planning to launch its website with unique culinary experience for viewers. Additionally, keeping the constant partial attention of consumers in mind, the channel will also unveil a mobile application for the convenience of its viewers. This will enable consumers to lap up content on the go. The mobile application is also expected to be launched in early 2016.

Launch plans for Living Entertainment’s four other channels, which were announced earlier this year, will be disclosed in 2016.

  • Smartphones & pay TV growth in China & India to spur A-Pac VOD demand: FMI report

Smartphones & pay TV growth in China & India to spur A-Pac VOD demand: FMI report

MUMBAI:  A-Pac rules and how. The Asia Pacific region is slated to overtake Western Europe as the second largest market for video on demand (VOD) services by 2020. And the growth in the region is going to be driven by the insatiable demand for smart phones in the fast growing economies of China and India.  The Asia Pacific VOD market is expected to touch revenues of $80.5 billion, fuelled additionally by the consumer hunger for pay TV services too in the region. From 13 per cent share of the global VOD sales in 2014, it is expected to rise to 22 per cent in the next five years. These are the findings of a US-based Future Market Insights (FMI) report released recently.

Titled Video on Demand (VoD) Market: Global Industry Analysis and Opportunity Assessment 2014-2020 the FMI report  states that the demand for pay-TV services will continue to remain strong during the forecast period 2014 to 2020. The study has stated on a global scale the VOD market will scale $263 billion by next year.

Popularity of Pay TV services, especially digital cable services, is increasing on account of deployment of 4K Ultra HD technology. Pay TV service providers are focusing on clubbing several advanced technologies, such as ITV and DVBS-2 based MPEG-4 video format with HD DTH. Integration of these technologies has given consumers a broad array of options to choose from, increasing the Pay TV subscriber base.

The report sub-segments the global VOD market into seven major regions in which North America and Western Europe are the two largest markets globally currently.

The North America VOD market is expected to surpass US$ 100 billion mark by the end of this year.  Proliferation of connected devices and increased spending on video services is expected to fuel the market in North America in the near future.

As is the global trend, pay TV services account for the bulk of the revenues in North America as well. Valued at US$ 91.6 billion in 2014, the Pay TV services market in North America is expected to reach US$ 103 billion by the end of 2016.

Cisco, SeaChange, Massive, and Pace are among the leading software players in the global VOD market whereas the leading service providers include Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, and Hulu.

The Western Europe VOD market is expected to reach a valuation of US$ 55.6 billion by the end of 2015. Demand for VOD services in Western Europe is growing at an annual rate of over 4%. The key players in the Western Europe VOD market include Agama Technologies, Exterity, Youview, BBC, and Orange.

  • iTV & TDML to produce global factual entertainment in 4K

iTV & TDML to produce global factual entertainment in 4K

MUMBAI: The factual entertainment space in India is witnessing waves of developments. Information Television (iTV) Network has joined hands with international feature entertainment content provider TERN TV and Trilogic Digital Media Limited to launch Insight TV in India.

The strategic alliance between iTV and TDML will see iTV parking its non-news channels with Trilogic as well as the launch of a multi genre entertainment broadcasting network. The first channel to emerge from this merger is Insight, which is one of India’s first 4K channels, which aspires to revolutionize TV viewing in India.

“We decided on launching a channel in the feature entertainment genre six months ago and worked on the content in two phases. The first phase is already underway. The second phase will have local content shot in 4K. We are launching now with only international content, eventually we will have a mix of both, ”  iTV Network chairman and MD Kartikeya Sharma tells Indiantelevision.com.

Insight is a global factual entertainment channel, which will take viewers on an adventurous journey to explore and interact with stories like never before. It will feature entertainment in genres like drama, natural history, science, technology, adventure, sports, wildlife and survival.

The channel will be available on both 4K and HD. 4K in India was started during the ICC 2015 Australia World Cup, but somehow failed to propel and the major reason behind it was lack of content and bandwidth. Sharma though feels that bandwidth is not a constraint for good quality, he says, “The 4k content has to be shot fresh. One cannot upgrade HD content to 4K. We are not yet clear on what 4K is, the global interpretation is anything shot at 50 frames per second is 4K and I think we have the bandwidth to provide that.”

In the initial stages the channel will concentrate on the top 10 urban cities of the country and later escalate to the rest of the areas. Insight will also have dubbed audio feeds to cater to vernacular markets. “The content that we have has the potential to travel pan India. So anyone who has a 4K TV and a set top box (STB) in any part of the country is our target audience,” says Sharma.

Emphasising on the importance of ratings and its relevance on ad sales, Sharma adds, “The English genre is facing a crisis when it comes to ratings. We are aggressively looking towards subscription revenue. Moreover, the advertising on Insight or the entire genre for that matter is more on the basis of perception not ratings.”

The channel will aggressively focus on original programming, innovative documentaries, accessible reality series and cutting-edge factual infotainment. “Trillogic already runs successful channels and we wanted to start an international channel with content from India and the Indian sub-continent and that’s where Insight comes in,” said TDML managing director Vishal Gurnani.

4K in India can also be a technology jargon where a new STB and special packages need to be installed. “The audience chases content and not technology. Indian audience is ready to pay for good content. They look forward to opening their pockets for a great audio visual experience. The multiplex revolution is a classic case. The cinema exhibition industry has managed to turn around to change the pricing patterns, then why can’t television do the same?” questions Gurnani.

“We look forward to working closely with ITV and to jointly create India’s fastest growing entertainment broadcast network. We will be launching four channels over the next 12 months, which include Phulwaa – India’s first Bhojpuri GEC, a soon to be announced interactive travel channel and many other varied entertainment channels,” adds Gurnani.

The new channel will also see localised content on a different tangent in the next financial year.

Travelxp set to unveil new logo and theme

MUMBAI: Premium travel and entertainment channel travelxp is set to don a new avatar replete with a new logo and theme. The white logo will symbolize the convergence of wavelengths of different colours.

The channel’s content will be divided into six distinct genres, namely, food, culture, nature, heritage, lifestyle and destination. The six main genres will be ornamented in six different colours based on the concept of colour psychology, which indicates, that colours have a psychological impact on choices and subtly influence behavior. The different colour formula is to create different identity for different genres, which will ease viewer’s association too.

“At travelxp we believe that the future starts today, not tomorrow. With this belief we are investing to create 4k travel content. For us, it’s an endless journey and an exciting one…The only way to really have a sense of how the world works is too see it yourself! Boasting of more than 20 million viewers in India, the fully high definition channel travelxp was launched in 2011. It is also one of the few channels in the world that has started shooting with 4K technology.

  • HD, premium channels, VAS help increase ARPUs for DTH: FICCI-KPMG

HD, premium channels, VAS help increase ARPUs for DTH: FICCI-KPMG

The growth of average revenue per user (ARPU) in the Direct To Home (DTH) sector continues, even as digital cable is still struggling to roll out channel packages. As per the FICCI- KPMG 2015 report, due to sustained increase in ARPU, the sector had a healthy revenue growth despite a muted subscriber addition in 2014.

In 2014, DTH operators saw an increase of around 12 to 15 per cent in ARPUs. While some of the ARPU increase was driven by DTH operators’ ability to continue to push price hikes (there was a price increase in April 2014 of an approximate eight to nine per cent), the more promising trend is that DTH operators were able to increase collections from customers by providing additional services such as High Definition (HD) channels, premium channels and other value added services (VAS).

As phase III and IV of digitisation draws near, the battle will be closely contested by MSOs and DTH operators. In phase I and II, DTH operators managed to gain 20 to 30 per cent of the subscriber base converting to digital. Two factors, namely an inherent technology advantage and stronger balance sheets, will give DTH players the bonus advantage to take on MSOs, especially the smaller players, in the year ahead. However, in order to gain a bigger piece of the pie, they will have to re-jig their channel packages, in sparsely populated areas so that it becomes affordable for subscribers in Phase III and IV.

Dish TV’s sub-brand Zing is all set to tackle digital cable players at the regional level. The brand addresses various linguistic needs of subscribers and offers regional specific channels as part of all available packs, while the other channels can be added based on the customer’s choice. It has been launched West Bengal, Tripura, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

When one compares Zing’s package prices, they are cheaper than those of digital cable. For example, the base package of Zing costs Rs 99 per month versus Rs 220 per month for digital cable. Its mid level package carries a price tag of Rs 249 versus Rs 270 per month for digital cable. Besides the content, even the advertising and other marketing activities are done in the regional languages, while customer support services will be at the local level through trade partners, similar to the cable TV model.

While digital cable operators are still grappling with securing their business model right, DTH operators have focused on increasing monetisation by providing additional value to their subscribers either through innovative services or STBs, such as those with unlimited recording and technology revolution like 4K.

According to the report, there are four million HD subscribers, accounting for 10 per cent of all DTH subscribers, while 15 to 20 per cent of incremental subscribers in 2014 were HD subscribers. HD adoption continues to drive ARPU growth for DTH players with the average ARPU of a HD subscriber at an approximate 1.5 to 2x the ARPU of a non-HD subscriber.

Compared to 6.5 million units of panel television sets (LCD, LED and plasma TVs) sold in 2013 in India, eight million units were expected to be sold in 2014, of which 55 per cent was expected to have been HD panel TV sales. The share of HD and 4K TV sales is expected to further increase over the next five years, reaching 80 per cent by 2019. While HD adoption will continue to be a key growth driver for DTH ARPUs over the next few years, adoption of 4K STBs is expected to pick up in India, though lack of 4K content can be a major problem.

Currently only Videocon d2h and Tata Sky offer 4K services. Live sports action is expected to be one of the enablers of HD adoption, with the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, likely to be a key trigger in 2015.

All major DTH operators namely Tata Sky, Dish TV, Videocon D2H and Airtel Digital have launched ‘TV Everywhere’ apps on mobiles and tablets through, which subscribers can watch live TV, catch up TV and video on demand (VoD) for an additional monthly fee. While there are several players along the media value chain who have launched online platforms for on-demand content to capture the surging viewer base, DTH operators have a key advantage in monetising these viewers through their ‘TV Everywhere’ apps, given their already existing payment relationships with subscribers.

KOLKATA: Broadcom Corp, one of the market leaders in providing chips for technologies such as enterprise networking, set-top boxes, and mobile connectivity functions, believes that the Indian market is ready for concepts like value added services (VAS), 4K, and hybrid technology.

After participating in the fair, themed ‘Connecting India’, the company said it has got overwhelming response from the industry and trade visitors.

“We spent time and discussed about our products and services with top 30 players of the industry apart from interacting with mid-sized companies,” informed Kapur.

While India is a large market for Pay TV and broadband, till some years ago, the technology platform was almost missing for stakeholders to gather at a platform and address the issues, challenges and scope of working.

“Broadcom spent quality time with big players. Even small players were interested in using and leveraging our services,” he said.

Kapur said that the company is eyeing further growth from Indian R&D centre. “Apart from executing ideas gathered from this meet at our global R&D centre, we would execute some ideas at our research centre in India,” he concluded.

  • Dish TV fortifies sports packaging for ICC Cricket World Cup

Dish TV fortifies sports packaging for ICC Cricket World Cup

MUMBAI: Cricket fans are currently glued to their television sets as the ICC Cricket World Cup kicked off this past weekend. Service providers such as Airtel Digital TV, Videocon d2h, Tata Sky, Sun Direct and Dish TV too are celebrating the onset of the event.

While Tata Sky and Videocon d2h are pushing their 4K set top boxes, DTH operator Dish TV has decided to fortify its sports packaging to offer a maximum of 12 sports channels during the gala event.

When asked how the DTH platform planned ahead of the World Cup, Dish TV chief operating officer Salil Kapoor says, “We conducted a pan India consumer survey, which revealed that the millennial generation has tremendous interest in sports and that HD is the preferred choice for watching sports. The research also showed an interesting angle that usually in a family its only one person who is interested in sports, the rest are still focused on GEC, movies, music etc.”

Kapoor further says that keeping these insights in mind, the platform re-looked at its packaging. “First we decided to up the HD quotient and added maximum number of HD channels. We now have 39 HD channels. We even fortified our sports packaging, offering maximum sports channels (12) in India,” he informs.

When quizzed about his views on a few DTH platforms focussing on the launch of 4K, which has limited content, Kapoor opines that while 4K is definitively a superior technology, the content for this technology is minimal in India. According to him the sale of DTH HD boxes is directly proportional with the sale of LCD TVs, which constitutes around 65-70 per cent in India, whereas 4K TVs are far too expensive and marginal compared to LCDs.

“It will take some time for this technology to pick up in India and broadcasters to start producing content in 4K. Till then HD will dominate the content market. Understanding this, we introduced 39 HD channels, which are the highest in the country,” he says.

Talking about how the repackaging will help the platform, Kapoor says that they call it a “cricket plus approach,” which highlights something for everyone to enjoy in High Definition.

“The consumer has already taken notice of our enhanced services and the numbers have started ringing in. We will expand our new consumer base significantly. The marketing activities are planned to promote the HD edge that we have as a brand,” he concludes.
