  • Pulse races past Rs 750 crore in sales, proving India still has a sweet (and tangy) tooth

Pulse races past Rs 750 crore in sales, proving India still has a sweet (and tangy) tooth

MUMBAI: DS Group’s chart-topping confectionery star, Pulse, has smashed yet another milestone, clocking over Rs 750 crore in consumer sales in FY 2024–25 — that’s one candy for every Indian, and then some.

Launched in 2015, the humble hard-boiled treat with a twist — a tangy core wrapped in raw mango nostalgia — has now dominated the category for nine years running, holding a 19 per cent market share and growing at a blistering CAGR of 15 per cent over the last three years. That’s well above the category average of 9 per cent — not bad for a candy that initially rode on word-of-mouth and a punchy tagline, ‘Pran Jaaye Par Pulse Na Jaaye.’

From bustling kiranas to highway dhabas, Pulse’s unmistakable zing has made it a fixture in both urban pockets and rural corners. Its distribution game, once a startup hustle, has evolved into a sleek, hyper-efficient network powering India’s most widely distributed hard-boiled candy.

But Pulse isn’t just about popping sugar bombs. It’s a full-blown case study at IIM Ahmedabad — a masterclass in flavour innovation, cultural insight, and unconventional marketing. Remember the ‘Pulse of the Sky’ kite-flying campaign that entered the Limca Book of Records? That was just one of many stunts that kept the buzz alive between launches of new flavours like guava, pineapple, orange, and the latest, ‘Pulse Golmol Imli Goli’, a chewy nod to India’s timeless tamarind love affair.

And the brand isn’t resting on its laurels. With viral UGC, organic celeb love, and award-winning campaigns from ‘Pulse Ka Pandal to Pulse Ganesh Mahotsav’, DS Group continues to stir the market with every pop.

“DS Group’s vision for Pulse, a leading Indian ethnic confectionery brand in India, is to evolve it into a multi-format, multi-occasion offering. We plan to achieve this by strategically moving into adjacent product categories, exploring innovative new formats, and capitalising on the rich tapestry of regional flavors. Our consistent focus on brand building, enhanced consumer engagement, and achieving deeper market penetration will help us maintain our leadership position. We’re aggressively pursuing both domestic and international markets for expansion. On the domestic front, we’re leveraging our robust distribution network that has a reach of over 35 lakh outlets across India,” said DS Group vice chairman, Rajiv Kumar.

“Pulse, with its delightful fusion of fruity and surprisingly tangy flavors, particularly the familiar raw mango with a zesty core, offered an unparalleled sensory experience to the consumer. This distinctly appealed to India’s preference for tangy tastes which was a significant departure from the Western-format candies prevalent at the time. Pulse candy stands as a testament to the evolving Indian consumer who is more value-conscious today and DS Group truly leveraged this understanding by disrupting the market with its pricing strategy. At a time when 86 per cent of the hard boiled candy market was at the 50-paise price point, Pulse boldly launched at Rs 1. This wasn’t just a higher price; it was a perceived higher value that resonated deeply with our palates and our pockets,” Kumar added.

“Pulse revolutionised the confectionery market by challenging the notion that candies were solely for children. It strategically tapped into an overlooked demographic, the adults, thereby significantly broadening the consumer base for impulse confectionery. Why should kids have all the fun? That was the premise. We leveraged our keen understanding of local palates and unmet consumer needs, allowing Pulse to redefine the segment and establish itself as a trendsetting brand with remarkable consumer loyalty. Even our packaging and design for Pulse was clutter breaking,” he said.

Call it a candy. Call it a case study. Either way, Pulse is still the flavour of the nation.

Boria Majumdar joins NDTV as Consulting Editor for sports coverage

MUMBAI:  Not just cricket scores or Olympic medals but what they say about a nation. That’s the lens Boria Majumdar is bringing to NDTV as he joins as consulting editor in a move that promises to reshape Indian sports journalism as we know it. A Rhodes Scholar, bestselling author, founder of Revsportz, and one of the country’s most respected sports voices, Boria isn’t just reporting the play he’s reading between the lines. From ghostwriting Playing It My Way with Sachin Tendulkar to tracking the Olympic journey of India’s rising stars, his résumé reads like a masterclass in access, authority, and storytelling.

“This is a new NDTV,” says Boria. “And I’ve been building a new kind of Indian sports media narrative, one that goes beyond hero worship and highlights Olympic, Paralympic, and grassroots stories with equal rigour. It’s bold, and it’s overdue.”

With India staring at a packed global sporting calendar from the 2026 T20 World Cup and FIFA World Cup to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and a possible bid for the 2036 Games NDTV’s new editorial strategy aims to deliver conversations that are not just entertaining, but essential.

“Sport isn’t entertainment. It’s identity. It’s diplomacy. It’s where a nation stands when the anthem plays,” Boria explains. “We’re here to ask better questions. Infrastructure. Funding. Gender equity. Athlete mental health. These are not side notes, they’re the main story.”

At NDTV, Boria will bring his signature depth, big-name interviews, and sharp commentary to a wider canvas. From Nagpada boxing rings to the chess boards of Chennai, from corporate corridors to kabaddi mat sidelines, expect every angle covered.

  • APOS 2025: Banijay Asia and its grow-grow urge

APOS 2025: Banijay Asia and its grow-grow urge

BALI: Banijay Asia, the formidable content producer, is strategically expanding its reach into Southeast Asia, with a sharp focus on Indonesia and a ground breaking reality series that will propel contestants into space, according to a report in Variety. Group chief executive Deepak Dhar, speaking at the APOS conference, revealed the company has “already locked a couple of deals in Jakarta” for both scripted and unscripted ventures.

This expansion includes an enhanced version of Banijay Asia’s previously announced cross-border reality show, which initially sought one Indian participant but will now search for “one Indian and finding one Indonesian who we can send to space in a Blue Origin rocket.”

The move comes as Banijay Asia continues to scale its substantial operations in India, a market with a “voracious content appetite,” according to Dhar. He noted the company produces “800 days of Big Boss [the local version of Celebrity Big Brother] in our calendar year of 365 days,” highlighting the sheer volume of content generated.

“The timing is right for us personally, because we’re happy in the position that we are at in India, and now we can focus our bandwidth into the rest of the region,” Dhar explained. “We are really doubling down on Indonesia and then subsequently in Thailand.”

Banijay Asia has built a strong reputation for successfully localising international formats while also developing successful Indian originals. Its  adaptation of The Night Manager for the erstwhile Disney+ Hotstar garnered massive viewership, with a second season currently in production. The company also recently rebooted the long-running crime procedural CID, which delivered “massive strong results on Sony television” before its subsequent windowing to Netflix.

Dhar articulated the company’s broader regional ambition: “It’s really time that an Indian story catches the fancy and attention of global audiences as well. So that’s really something that we’re excited and working towards.”

  • UGRO Capital doubles down on MSME pride with a bold new pledge: #BharosaMSMEpar

UGRO Capital doubles down on MSME pride with a bold new pledge: #BharosaMSMEpar

MUMBAI: Ugro Capital, the DataTech NBFC with MSMEs in its DNA, has launched a rallying cry for India’s small business backbone — and it’s asking the entire country to stand up and be counted. With #BharosaMSMEpar, Ugro is transforming last year’s popular ‘MSME Accha Hai!’ sentiment into a full-blown national movement.

At the heart of the campaign is a stirring AI-generated manifesto film that opens with: ‘Har gali, har sheher mein… ek sapna pal raha hai.’ This isn’t just a campaign — it’s a pledge of confidence, a digital pat on the back for India’s 6.3 crore micro, small, and medium enterprises.

In true Ugro style, the entire campaign — from the poetic script to its immersive soundscape — is crafted using generative AI. Viewers are invited to a slick microsite to sign a pledge, download a personalised e-certificate, and post it proudly across LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. Meanwhile, a companion series of ‘Main MSME Hoon’ films gives voice to factories, kirana stores and workshops, highlighting their grit and drive.

The movement was unveiled on ‘The Simple Hai Show’ by Ugro Capital’s founder and managing director, Shachindra Nath, alongside Vivek Law, financial literacy evangelist and editor-in-chief at Simple Hai!, who also lent his voice to the AI-powered film.

To push the message into every mohalla and mandi, branded booths and screenings are travelling across India. On MSME Day, over 1,000 chartered accountants at the ICAI Varanasi MSME Mahotsav will add their names to the growing pledge list — part of UGRO’s plan to reach over a million Indians this month.

UGRO Capital head – marketing & corporate communications, Ankit Chothani said, “With #BharosaMSMEpar, we are turning belief into behaviour. ‘MSME Accha Hai’ gave India the emotion, today we invite every citizen to act on it. When you pledge, you stand with your neighbourhood shopkeeper, your local manufacturer, your community’s dreamer. You are not just clicking a button; you are supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”

With MSME Day as its launchpad and year-long activations planned, this campaign is more than just a moment. It’s a movement.

  • Comscore report: Influencers now spark 36 per cent of global social media engagement — and India’s creator economy is on fire

Comscore report: Influencers now spark 36 per cent of global social media engagement — and India’s creator economy is on fire

MUMBAI: Move over, legacy media. In today’s scroll-happy world, social influencers are the new empire builders — and India is leading the charge. According to The Social Influencers  Report: India Edition 2025 by Comscore, content creators are now responsible for a staggering 36 per cent of all user engagement across Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok worldwide.

And in a market where 1.4 billion people live online-first lives, the stakes — and returns — are massive. Whether it’s a viral reel from a beauty guru, a fiery political post, or a behind-the-scenes cricketer vlog, influencers are driving India’s digital heartbeat — and shaping brand strategy, platform growth, and content monetisation at scale.

India’s top influencers? They are politicians and cricketers — with engagement numbers that rival primetime TV.  The data reveals some headline-stealing names. Prime minister Narendra Modi continues to dominate social media, generating 5.4 million monthly actions on Facebook and a further 10.8 million on X — more than many entertainment networks combined.

Meanwhile, stars like KL Rahul, Rashmika Mandanna, and Hardik Pandya are keeping fans hooked across Instagram and YouTube. Beauty creator Parul Garg smashed viewership charts with 441.2 million views, proving that makeup and relatability are a power combo.

Forget followers — engagement is the only currency that counts.  The report makes one thing clear: follower counts are yesterday’s news.

“That influencer with 500K followers might be getting ghosted by their own audience,” says Comscore. “It’s engagement — likes, comments, shares — that reflects real influence.”

The advice to brands? Dump the vanity metrics. Invest in creators who spark emotional responses, drive interactions, and know how to move the needle.

Timing is everything: the best posting windows for Indian influencers to help you to ride the engagement wave. Know when your audience is listening. The report maps out the sweet spots across platforms:

    * Instagram: Mon–Wed mornings (10–11 am) and daily evenings (4–7 pm)
    * Facebook: Late mornings and afternoons, especially early in the week
    * X (formerly Twitter): 8–9 am daily and post-9 pm Mon–Tues
Fridays and Saturdays? Surprisingly flat. Sunday evenings, on the other hand, are primed for attention.

Virtual influencers are here — and they’re outperforming humans. The AI influencers are no longer gimmicks — they’re headline acts. Digital avatars like Lil Miquela, Aitana López, and Brazil’s Lu do Magalu are rewriting the rules of influence. These virtual personalities:don’t age, cancel, or misbehave; post consistently across markets and  adapt voice, tone, and look for hyper-local relevance.

They’ve fronted campaigns with brands from Calvin Klein to LiquidIV, clocking millions of views without ever stepping into a makeup chair or selfie booth.

Bonus: no diva demands, PR disasters, or DM leaks.

The biggest takeaway? If you’re still treating influencer marketing like a side hustle, you’ve already lost.

“Creators aren’t just content providers,” says the report. “They’re media buyers, storytellers, and brand equity multipliers rolled into one.”

Brands must integrate influencer strategy across all touchpoints — from digital to social to streaming — or risk being drowned out by competitors who do.

Final word: in the creator economy, fast movers win — the rest scroll behind. The competition is brutal. The smartest brands are already locking in creators with proven audience trust, emotional resonance, and multichannel command. And if you’re still running single-platform strategies in 2025? “You’re flying blind,” warns Comscore. “Your audience is watching TikToks, scrolling Insta, and doomscrolling X — often in the same hour. Get the full footprint or get forgotten.”

  • Newsroom shake-up as Anil Uniyal exits NDTV after two eventful years

Newsroom shake-up as Anil Uniyal exits NDTV after two eventful years

MUMBAI: After steering the ship through a crucial phase, Anil Uniyal has stepped down as chief operating Officer of NDTV, wrapping up a two-year tenure that saw him deeply involved in shaping the channel’s post-acquisition identity and relaunching NDTV Profit. Uniyal’s resignation, as reported by multiple media outlets, closes another chapter in a career that’s been synonymous with leadership in Indian business newsrooms from Network18 to Quint and now NDTV. His departure adds another twist to NDTV’s evolving story under the Adani Media Group umbrella.

During his stint at NDTV, Uniyal was known to have worked closely with Sanjay Pugalia and played a key role in stabilising the broadcaster’s business operations. He also had a hand in reviving NDTV Profit, the business news channel that absorbed operations from the now-defunct BloombergQuint.

Speaking to Indian Television Dot Com Uniyal said he is yet to decide his next move on the professional front.

Before joining NDTV in 2022, Uniyal served as CEO at Bloombergquint, where he helped position the venture as a significant digital destination for financial and business news. That journey began in 2016, after Bloomberg’s tie-up with Quintillion Media, and culminated in the platform’s eventual acquisition and integration into the NDTV family.

His earlier stint at Network18 between 2011 and 2016 was equally prolific, where he held leadership roles across CNBC-TV18, CNBC Awaaz, CNBC Bajar, and Forbes India. As COO, he was instrumental in driving the group’s business news portfolio forward.

While Uniyal’s next move remains under wraps, industry watchers are keenly eyeing where he lands next. One thing is certain: wherever he goes, he’s sure to bring newsroom know-how and sharp operational chops with him.

NBA and Skechers spotlight Indian hoop dreams in Hoop Nation Season 2

MUMBAI: When basketball meets bars, stories soar beyond the court. The NBA, in collaboration with Skechers, has launched the second season of its lyrical docuseries Hoop Nation, a four-part chronicle of resilience, rhythm and real-life hoop dreams from the far corners of India. Streaming now on NBA India’s Youtube channel, Hoop Nation Season 2 weaves slam dunks with sick beats, profiling underrepresented basketball voices from Kashmir to Kerala, Kolkata to Mumbai all with an assist from India’s rising hip-hop stars. And who’s soundtracking their journeys? Straight Outta Srinagar, ThirumaLi, EPR Iyer and QK hip-hop artists whose original verses narrate these ballers’ lives with lyrical punchlines and sonic swagger.

Hoop Nation Season 2 embodies the spirit of basketball in India, a game that unites, inspires and drives change,” said NBA India Country HeadRajah Chaudhry. “Skechers shares our mission of taking the game deeper into India’s cultural and sporting fabric.”

Skechers CEO of South Asia Rahul Vira added, “This isn’t just about footwear; it’s about fuelling the fire in every Indian baller. With Hoop Nation and the ACG Jr. NBA program, we’re enabling both inspiration and access.”

  • APOS 2025: Sushant Sreeram and JioHotstar’s masterclass on reinvention

APOS 2025: Sushant Sreeram and JioHotstar’s masterclass on reinvention

BALI: JioStar’s Sushant Sreeram came out swinging at APOS 2025, tearing up the traditional streaming script with a bold case for fluid monetisation and empathy-first design. Speaking on a high-voltage panel alongside Aditya Swamy of Google Play and Sutanto Hartono of Emtek, the SVOD chief and CMO laid out JioHotstar’s roadmap for a new era of video engagement.

“We’re not locked into SVOD or AVOD silos,” Sreeram said. “Serving over 500 million monthly users and nearly 300 million subscribers demands a far more flexible approach to how people watch — and pay.”

His argument was clear: India’s economic layers defy cookie-cutter pricing. “The top 10 per cent of Indian households have parity with the UK or Germany on a PPP basis. But the next 10 per cent? A whole different world. That’s where true innovation begins.”

Sreeram credited much of JioHotstar’s traction to product-led thinking, citing the latest IPL season as a masterclass in fan experience. “Viewership surged 40 per cent on opening weekend in year 18. That’s not fatigue — that’s reinvention,” he said, referencing multi-cam feeds, VR features, and deep localisation as core drivers.

AI and machine learning are now hardwired into the platform. “From predictive personalisation to real-time language adaptation, we’re not chasing attention — we’re courting emotion,” he added.

His parting shot? “You don’t build for India — you build from India. That means designing with agility, pricing with precision, and listening like your survival depends on it. Because it does.”
